An Inside View
Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One While I have enjoyed listening to Rush for many years, I probably would not fall into the category of a "dittohead." This book is light and reads very quickly. It is a fun read. Rush Limbaugh is a man of whom few are neutral--you either love him or hate him--and there are many in both of those camps. There are no major revelations in the book, in fact, most of it's key events are very familiar. The two strengths are the information it gives about Rush's formative years and the "inside" view that it affords. The fans of Rush will read it quickly and enjoy it well enough--the others, I don't expect will even pick it up.

Right off the bat the author ask us! Do you remember your first time? NO not your first kiss (or errrrr the other thingLOL)! The first time you herd El Rushbo. I do! it was the first week he went national and My cousin Warren had her the show on Monday, and told us, HEY you got to hear Rush and I did the next day and have been hooked ever since. He is clearly the King of political talk.

Its written in an easy to read, engaging and entertaining style. I love them way he blends in Rushisms all through the book and also includes worlds fro song parodies and bits. I found myself laughing out loud and the buts etc.,

Everyday listeners, will remember much of what is covered hear by the author; Operation Chaos, The NFL ownership saga, "I Hope He Fails", Michael J. Fox, etc... but you will also get how Rush personally feels about some of these things as they pertain to his show.

One review said that "Chafets paints a compelling portrait of Limbaugh as a master entertainer, a public intellectual, a political force, and a fascinating man." and I have to agree. This is a great read for For ditto-heads and anyone who wants to know about Rush. Rush Limbaugh An Army Of One, is a great read!!!!

You Can't Top Rush Limbaugh
An Army of One is a decent read for those relatively new to Rush as well as those who cannot get enough of Rush, even 24/7 subscribers.Author Zev Chafets did his homework, legwork, and actually listened to radio broadcasts, which provides readers with a quick overview of one of America's greatest patriots, philosophers, and innovators.My only criticisms are these: 1) the author's commentaries relating to historical references and what he deems to be "mistakes" by Rush are merely the author's personal views, which is not what a reader wants to read in a book about Rush(we want to read about Rush, his life, and his views, not someone we've never heard of before), and 2) when the author attempts to paraphrase Rush and insert his own humor, he just cannot compete with El Rushbo himself.Nevertheless, this is a quick read about a revolutionary man striving to keep America great.

Atilla the Fun
Limbaugh's good cheer and optimism come through in his book, but the book itself is plagued with odd pacing (for example, slowing way down to talk about Rush's grandfather and father) and too heavily-loaded with descriptions of life in Cape Girardeau, MO.It would have been better for the book to focus on Limbaugh himself talking about Limbaugh.Rush's personal life is not that interesting; his accomplishments are the reason I picked up the book.

This book pays attention to Rush as a political activist: the radio show, the humor he uses, the transformation of talk radio into a powerful political force, the ways Rush undermines and infuriates the traditional media, and the message of conservatism.That was good.

Hang onto this book, because sooner or later President Obama's unpopularity will be sanitized and papered over (if I said his unpopularity would be "whitewashed," would people call me a racist?Ha!).It will disappear down the memory hole.Books like this will help us remember. ... Read more

Almost 20yrs later
It's scary but ..After almost 20yrs, I decided to pull down my hardcover copy of the book, which I bought when it originally came out. I wanted to see how he stood the test of time on some issues. Would you believe that almost 20yrears later he's still relevant, elegant and right on the money?From class warfare, to Taxes, to the Environment. Rush Limbaugh's commentary in this book is STILL completely accurate.

Yes I'm aware that my statement will cause liberal heads everywhere to explode. that's fine..just do me a favor...ladies and gent..well can't really call them that since they tend to be rude beyond belief so how about boys and girls instead?Okay boys and girls if you're head is going to explode try and give me a little warning so I can put on my rain poncho. I don't want to spend my time doing laundry just to get the blood and brain stains out of my clothes.

That being said. By all means..if you don't own this book..why not? Get it and read it. I suspect some will be as pleasantly surprised as I was at how accurate it still is.

Why do people put up with his rudeness?
"The Ways Things Ought to Be".How would he know?He's an idiot.

I don't understand why some people put up with his rudeness to guests and callers.The American ideal and value is to let everyone speak their own opinions and be listened to respectfully, without interruption and/or deliberate misunderstanding.

All this talk about "conservatives" being "good guys" and "liberals" being "bad guys is a case of extreme stereotyping.Stereotypes are always inaccurate and unjust.Both groups, "conservatives" and "liberals" are composed of millions of individual human beings each with their own unique viewpoints & opinions.The American ideal and value is peaceful and willing cooperation and understanding between groups.

Real "liberals" are nothing like the stereotypes that these wannabe "culture warriors" are putting out.So the "cultural warriors" have an "us-vs-them" siege mentality (never a good thing) against an "enemy" that doesn't really exist; they had to invent one.The American ideal and value is to promote cooperation, understanding, and acceptance of persons as they really are as well as living honestly.

It is these American ideals & values that have made the USA the greatest nation on Earth.These ideals & values have made this country a free land, and it remains that to this day.I love the USA and am proud to be an American citizen.I consider myself a middle-of-the-road liberal with my own unique viewpoints and tangents.

Worth Reading Again.
I have had this book in my library for years. In light of where we are in this country, it's worth another read. Rush saw the light long before this country started down this socialist path that we are on.

The radio show in a book----witty
The way things ought to be, but cannot.Rush says, a radio show analyzes specific events within a time frame, thus making it difficult if not impossible to write a book in the same format.Even though his radio show is top notch I questioned whether he could write an effectual book.Rush quips he is no great writer.I would agree, nonetheless the book does impact by amplifying what the people believe; he is also witty, humorous, and gives good arguments.Actually, it reads like the radio show----not much is new.

The book begins with his early years as a disc jockey and the resurgence of AM talk radio.The short chapters are many, and some of the subjects Rush hits on are abortion, the absurd, Reagan and the eighties, congress, Hollywood, utopianism, the media, God, and of course, liberalism.He does not mince words, so at times he uses language that I found unnecessary in order to get the point across.His last words were, the Nation has no more money and liberalism is on the way out.This is where I think he is wrong: The government keeps finding money it doesn't have and liberalism seems to be surging.

I remember back in my mid twenties when I began to break from political liberalism: The Rush Limbaugh show was a major influence.Rush has his faults, but he is a man of wisdom and faith, a great thinker, and as far as a radio host goes, polite.He is a true crusader for freedom and liberty, and has become one of the most misunderstood and misquoted men of our time.

Echo Chamber - Jamison & Cappella (Oxford University Press)
In `Echo Chamber: Rush Limbaugh and the Conservative Media Establishment,' authors Jamieson and Cappella take a much deeper and scientific approach to their study of the connection between Limbaugh, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal's editorial pages. Backed by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, `Echo Chamber' is an exacting and through accounting of the detailed factors (framing, name calling, collusion) employed by the `conservative opinion media' to not only broadcast their message to a narrowly chosen demographic (white, older, southerners that make up the sweet spot of the GOP), but whose agenda actually reaches right into the heart of the Republican party to do everything in their power to either anoint, or deny political success to, candidates that pass their litmus test of Reagan conservatism (anti-regulation, gun rights, small government, anti-welfare, pro-life, etc.) Examples of those who have benefitted (Bush, Palin) as well those who have been attacked, or perhaps killed, politically for not being conservative enough (McCain, Huckabee.)

The missing piece in both books is the deep dive, where the authors look way under the hood at the true germination and funding of these messaging campaigns (lobbyists), the benefactors of the message (corporations) and the true innerworkings of the skunkworks who pull the strings on all of this (Frank Luntz, Dick Armey, RNC operatives, etc.) The opportunity here is for a new Woodward and Bernstein to emerge to get beyond the surface speakers of this movement and to reveal the real shadow players in this political agenda.

In other words, it's time for a new Deep Throat.

Telling it as it is.
Although, I haven't had the opportuity to read the book, from my browsing through it,I think it hits the nail on the head.

Sigh...Another Mere Description of the Problem
In an effort to be "balanced," an interesting modernist spatial metaphor in and of itself, the authors have completely missed the point of the philosophical response to sophistry.There is no balance between true and false.Yes, it is valuable to talk about media trends, rhetorical tactics, and ownership... many have gone before (Ben Bagdikian, McChesney for instance) and done a better job of analyzing the major problems of ownership trends, private interest and public bias.The Unification Church of the fascist Sun Moon bankrolled the Washington Times (along with Jerry Falwell's Liberty University!).And of course the naming of outlets by conservatives has been done in such a way as to confuse the public (New York Post... Washington Times).But what this book misses entirely is the issue of the truth (which will become urgent as now corporations can pour money into political campaigns -- Bagdikian noted 30 years ago the trend that corporations tired of trying to control journalists simply started buying the media and became their bosses firing unruly reporters).Limbaugh, et al., systematically present a distorted view of reality. Exposure of systematic distortion of the truth is painstaking and it is the proper function of science be it medicine pulling us out of the Dark Ages of superstition-based treatments that in fact did not and do not work, or sociology debunking the idea that race and gender correlate with intelligence.The fact is that the conservative media constitutes a relentless drum beat of distortion.They (Roger Ailes for instance) coordinate their messages with the GOP, which is the primary lobby of business interests.Al Franken and his band of Harvard assistants did a more entertaining and better job of exposing the lies. And the problem of the relentless and redundant drum beat is best explained by the cultivation effect introduced by George Gerbner 30 years ago.Critical thinking is a redundant phrase.The semiotic of Glenn Beck wearing a Soviet style hat on his book depicting the Democrats as fascists is easily refuted as the Dems, unlike the Soviet leaders, have been elected... and if anyone needs to be careful here it is Bush benefiting from a party-line vote in the Supreme Court to ignore the Florida Court on recounts and installing him in office rather than the popular winner Gore.Such obvious discursive activity is what is needed but it does require one to stop "balancing."The philosophical response to sophists was to test their claims of fact against reality and expose fallacies and falsehoods as such.Aristotle posited this as the best form of inoculation against systematic liars.The lifting of the fairness doctrine gave conservative voices the opportunity to spew lies without any challenge.The deregulation of ownership has allowed Clear Channel to purchase 2000 radio station instead of being held to seven.The essence of democracy, the dialectic has collapsed.This is the point.Irrational power has steamrollered any hint of public participation in debate.And with corporate control of channels we have the essence of bias (inoculatory framing... whatever the new moniker is for an ancient debate tactic or unrelenting propaganda to posion the well of alternative explanations).The authors are presuming a transcendental academic posture but the fact is their discourse becomes part of the landscape and the landscape they are playing at disinterestedly surveying is a battle ground over the truth.But as an impotent drone it enters the semantic field and immediately dies without so much as a whimper.Their book is a giant equivocation.It is more about their egoistic attempt to appear transcendentally disinterested than the truth and the struggle over power.This is a typical example of the American academic culture since McCarthyism chased principled stand out of the classrooms, and why it is irrelevant to the direction of the country.Another dust-catcher.Mere description unto death.I learned not one thing from this book.It's a waste of paper and ink.The old liberal intellectuals from the New York Group to Kurt Vonnegut to Terkel, and yes Moyers who takes a stand... are dying off.Outside of some narrower race-based social commitment (Cornel West, Mia Angelo, for instance) American intelligentsia stands for nothing.It balances above in pure abstraction soon to be replaced by corporate education ala Phoenix "University" (whose founder owns the most expensive house in America in San Francisco).

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
Analyzing conservative political outlets (primarily the editorial/op ed pages of the Wall Street Journal, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh's radio show) is commendable, but Holy Moses, this is some seriously dry reading. The book should be applauded for taking the high road by truly trying to dissect and understand how these outlets function and the impact they have on listeners, viewers or readers. People looking for the authors to trash these demagogues are going to be sorely disappointed. In a bit of false advertising, the cover design's usage of harsh black-and-red attempts to connote an ominous conservative troika. Unless you are a political/media wonk or have been living deep in the recesses of the Amazon Forest for the past 25 years and have never heard of any of these people, you'll likely find this book pure drudgery. The writing does not even have a modicum of humor or pizzazz in its 250 pages. If you are an insomniac desperate for a cure, this baby may do the trick. ... Read more

Basic Info on Rush with Plodding Narrative
This plodding narrative of Rush's life story highlights some intereting facts (such as that he never voted in the Reagan years) and talks with significant people (Rush's first wife).But it's carefully written so as not to offend the talk show host.Since the author had access to Rush's mom and brother, he skews the information in Rush's favor and is too careful in presenting a story that could have been much more interesting.

For being written by a "journalist," this book has a number of errors about radio and the book seems padded (with chapters devoted to comparing Rush to Arthur Godfrey??)

The book also has no footnotes, no information sources listed and no photos.So it's incomplete.

The facts are that Rush was fired from his first four radio jobs, had a couple of fast early marriages, dropped out of college after a year (and failed classes while he attended)--yet there isn't much "dirt" in this book.Even his first wife hasn't much negative to say--is everyone fearful of what Rush would say on the air or somehow get back at them legally?

So if you want the basic facts they are here--but they are presented in such a way as to not offend the host.

narcissism at its best
Obviously, this author has some serious ego issues, perhaps narcissism. He is so full of himself and its repulsive. He has failed at what Rush continues to flourish in. Thats the joke. And his other book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them," his face should of been on that cover and also Pelosi, Obama, and Dodd. I couldn't bear to read this nonsense for more than 5 minutes before I was close to vomiting.

I'm a fan of Rush's
So obviously I don't like this book - but that doesn't mean I don't think it shouldn't be read.

In order to make a decision about anyone, you need to see both sides of the issue. Then, it should be easy to see that issues are black and white, someone is right and someone is wrong.

I lean a little on the side of Rush Limbaugh.

If you've got a Kindle, check out The Rush Limbaugh Report. "I listen to Rush Limbaugh, so you don't have to."

Heh heh. Okay, I just wanted to get in that line, which I think is a clever one. But seriously, before making any judgments about Limbaugh, actually listen to his program for a couple of weeks. Yes, he has some annoying schticks, but overall he makes a lot of sense - if you're the kind of person who dreams of America not as it ever was but as it was supposed to be - the ideal, Americns of all races, creeds and colors, legal immigrants, et al, standing on their own two feet and making this country great.

I wonder how many copies of this book would have been sold WITHOUT the use of "RUSH" in the title.
Conservative principles are ideal regardless of the lifestyles of its proponents.

Al Franken does not provide ample arguments to dissuade the conservative argument.Turns out that he is the idiot, not rush.There's a reason why his radio show was not only cancelled, but the entire network folded.

limbaugh is right
Once upon a time I thought Rush was an idiot, but then I listened to his show and later read HIS books.He actually knows what he is talking about.Read his book with an open mind instead of this trash.

Light and heavy at the same time
As much as I am amazed at the subject's ability to expound at length, and in a very entertaining and thought-provoking way, I'm amazed that after all the nonsense he still is reported to be Number One in his field. The good-natured "gotchas" throughout this book remind us that behind that media monolith is an uncontrollable urge to shoot his mouth off and while doing so delude himself and an incredible amount of "dittoheads".
So often, as this book points out, he is not even close, discussing Plymouth Rock, the beginnings of the Health Care system, global warming, etc.
What makes this phenomenon a serious issue is the obvious well fortified platform he has stepped up to as a first class Demagogue. High ratings and a sharp "Screener" can't hurt, when you're playing a composite of Ol' King Cole and William F. Buckley (RL wishes he could wash his socks), and interminably ventilating on the Clintons.
The dittoheads are entitled to turn off their brains while listening to Limbaugh - I did hear such an exhortation from Limbaugh way back when and it didn't sound completely in jest - but I would challenge them to challenge their man to refrain from insulting family members of his political targets, such as Kitty Dukakis and Chelsea Clinton.
Maybe this book, and others, will, through humour, will entice those "heads" into becoming their own "screeners" for objectivity about Rush, buy this book, and ask themselves, does "ditto" mean, yeah, I love him like the rest, or "ditto", whatever he says is fact.

From the Mouth of a Souce
The book tells us what many of its readers already know. Rush Limbaugh appeals to our lower instincts where impulses run rampant, and the emotion of anger is the easiest to trigger and feed.

In what is almost a comic book format and coloring, the content is surprisingly serious about Mr. Limbaugh's deceit, racism, disingenuousness, fabrications and lies. Here's an example from the radio airing on March 10, 1994:

Limbaugh: "I am not calling the president names."

Caller: "You do it every day."

Limbaugh: "Give me one example of calling him a name..."

Caller: "You've called him a liar, a fool, and idiot."

Limbaugh: "Those are not names. Those are assessments of his character. They are not names."

I was most interested in Rush's background, which revealed his hypocrisy. Limbaugh the ueberpatriot claimed that Reagan was the best president this country ever had, but he never voted for him. In fact, he didn't vote until he was thirty-five.

The second was his lack of military service. Rush claimed to have failed a draft physical and thus was never called because he had a high draft number. Actually, he had a low one, was called, and then "failed" the physical. At different times claiming a knee injury from high school football, and then a pilonidal cyst, which caused him to fail. His father had the same cyst when he was a World War II fighter pilot.

The man who rails against divorce is now working on his third marriage, and the printing of this book was before Limbaugh's drug addiction.

This book also includes Limbaugh's pronouncements and then the reality check. An example of this is Limbaugh's claim that melting glacial ice is the same as ice melting in a glass. The level doesn't change. And here is where RL is flat out wrong. Most of our glacial ice is over land. Water level would rise 200 feet worldwide if it melted.

This means Limbaugh needs to be taken with a large dose of salt, but this is where the book unwittingly falters. Those who see Limbaugh as a charlatan, don't require further convincing. Those who worship at the altar of his Cuban cigars and grotesque line of ties, will discount the contents of this book without reading it.

At least now, I have identified the source for a number of neocon arguments.

This is the kind of book you read during the commute.

Laying the framework
Let me preface this by saying that I was inspired to buy this book because my father is one of the biggest "dittoheads" ever.
Anyway, for a mere $7.00, I could explain to my dad just how wrong this loud, sweaty homo-phobe really is.
More than the lies themselves, I was glad there were citations. I found in Limbaugh's book where he said there are more acres of forestland today than there were back in 1492 when Columbus discovered the continent. WAAAAYYY Off! If there's more forest today, what were all of our cities, parks, stadiums, etc. built on? Barren Desert? I think not, Rush.
The quotes from his radio show are shocking. I just wish I could access an archive of this guy, just so I could really hear them.

Meet the Ruling Class
I know the owner of a small restaurant here in the suburbs of Dallas. He wanted to name his restaurant (his !) with a name that had the word for an alcoholic drink in it. He was told by the ruling city counsel - which has been in power far too long, btw - that he couldn't because they didn't "want to promote drinking". He was just told that the way the French aristocracy would have told it to someone in the 1600s. And when he asked a question he was rebuffed with "you are challenging us, Sam !". No democratic process, if you ask a question of the "rulers", you are challenging them and they will get back at you.

Flash back to Hyde Park in about 2000. Michelle Obama is working (I use that term lightly) for a hospital in Chicago, making $ 320,000 a year. Was she a surgeon ? No. A doctor ? No. So what was she ? Well, an over-educated"administrator", and that is the salary for that job, when your husband is politically connected in Illinois. So the Obama's were probably making close to $ 500,000 a year, not because they worked hard and made big contributions to society. Rather, they were well connected and were at the receiving end of a large spigot of money being "redistributed" from Washington D.C. and the city and state.

And that is what is meant by the "Ruling Class". If you go to places like the suburbs of D.C., parts of Chicago, San Francisco, etc. you will not see CEOs who employ thousands and make products or services. You will encounter the "ruling class" of well-connected people who are a network for spending YOUR money, because, as Bill Clinton once said, the people don't know how to spend it, but their rulers do.

The book itself is small and an easy read. It did paint a slightly too black and white picture, but in essence, it is spot on and eye opening.

Clear statement of the trouble we are in
It is not the GOP vs. the White House and the Congress. It is the White House and the Congress vs. American people. The ruling class wants to reshape you, your family, and your community. A clear statement of the problem we face today with no workable solution offered. A must read! The solution to this political mess we are in lies with the readers of this book.

Great reading for liberty-oriented people
A great book that puts into words what we probably knew, deep down, all along.What is the defining feature of "the elites", for example?What do Chris Matthews and John Kerry have in common? (One is fairly smart and the other being a pompous ass, but they get along so well, and both are wrong almost all the time.)

Angelo Codevilla describes the "Ruling Class" so well, and the only disappointing aspect of the book is the realization that I could never be a member of that class, regardless of my income or achievements!If you care about why this country has slid into the government-centered mess that we are now in, you must read this book.If you like it, subscribe to "American Spectator", which brought us the article on this subject that started this ball rolling.

Rush Limbaugh, on reading the Spectator article, spent some time extolling it's virtues.His take was that being a member of the "Ruling Class" was akin to sitting at the cool table in high school, a status that is hard to define but you'll know it when you see it.Those of us who didn't sit at the cool table always realized that we didn't really want to, but so many of us were envious anyway!Rush is right:many people never really left high school.

Beyond Right and Left
Codevilla offers an analysis of our political quagmire that gets beyond left and right, red and blue, Republican and Democrat, and other simplistic and shallow descriptions.

He offers an intellectual substantiation for the tea party movement not unlike Thomas Paine's Common Sense was for the original revolution.The Elites, the Ruling Class includes most Democrats, much of Wall Street (as opposed to Main Street) and some of the Republicans vs the Country Class- those who work for a living, volunteer, value family and are more likely to value religious belief of some sort.

The problem is that the Ruling Class which is a minority of the population is cohesive while the Country Class is dispersed, tending to subject their political support to various litmus tests.The Tea Party is an effort to find some cohesiveness for the majority.

The Ruling Class is a short and clear must read for a clearer understanding of our political climate.

Coulter is spot on, but the book is dated
The text is showing its age. For those of us who became conservatives because we realized, through experience, how unhealthy it is to be liberal, we're learning nothing new. Experience has taught us that conservatism provides a better, healthier way of life. I agree with Coulter on 99% of what she writes in Slander.

At the same time, this book is a rant, and the rant gets tiring. She repeats a lot of the same information (and attacks!!!) multiple times in one section of a single chapter. She could have made her point with more concise writing.

Coulter researched the book, which is another plus. She provides TONS of footnotes. She encourages readers to utilize LexisNexis so that they can do their own research and draw their own conclusions.

Coulter's books are often verbose, acerbic, and intense, but Coulter herself holds strong, conservative, admirable values. And it takes a lot of courage to share those values with the world.

Ann Coulter still searching to write a book on something she is 1/2 competent about
Pat Roberston and Jerry Falwell blamed the 9/11 attacks on atheists, gays, feminists, abortionists etc. Did he mention the awful job that Bush (who was president for 8 months after all) did in preventing the attacks? No. Falwell stated and Roberston agreed that those groups leta deity to take away his supposedumbrella of protection away from America. So, these "blame America" first individuals blame an attack committed by religious nuts on freethinkers and securlarists? Coulter's reaction in her book, well it was wrong for Walter Cronkite to criticize these nutjobs. Isn't Coulter big on this kick of all who criticize rightwing presidents are traitors, unamericans, unpatriotic, etc? I guess blaming America and not the terrorists doesn't count, huh?

Strong medicine for weak liberal minds
Coulter pulls no punches in her masterful expose of the liberal press.Coulter disembowels the liberal establishment with 'Ninjaesque' deftness.If you can handle the *big* words, have rudimentary math and logic skills, and aren't afraid of critical thinking then you might find this book as hilariously revealing as I did.Quite a tour de force!

The Liberal Bias & ObamaNation
Ann Coulter's incisive perspective into the liberal bias against the American right was written several years before ObamaNation was even considered a possibility; her observations ring prophetic.The situation has even gotten more biased, as a new President has taken over the reigns & appears to be leading this country down the perilous path of socialism; to this point he's received a mysterious free pass from the press.

No matter what Obama does or doesn't do seems to be accepted carte blanche from a media who clearly appears to be shills for the President's vague agenda.Certainly, the American public has grown increasingly disgruntled recently over issues ranging from his handling of the economy & health care to his lack of transparency over his past; including his eligibility to even be our President.

This appears to be a one term Presidency for Obama, barring an unforseen miracle in his erratic decision making.We need a leader who is more centrist to resolve this nation's problems & it seems likely that won't be forthcoming.I only hope we can survive the next three and a half years without total chaos.

It doesn't look good at this particular point in time; Coulter has continued to raise valid concerns in an enlightening and entertaining manner, providing America with a refreshingly conservative perspective.

Very effective
I know Dittoheads won't like this book, but to an objective observer it's right on the money. The fallacious "arguments" Rush uses in his books are exposed as the nonsense they are. My favorite example is where Dr.Perkins uses the example of the Indian genocide Rush doesn't think happened. This is a great introduction to logic, while being amusing at the same time.I highly recommend Logic and Mr.Limbaugh.

CLAP TRAP
An illogical book about logic. How quaint. And what a waste of money and time.

Very Entertaining
First of all, many of the grudges against this book defend Rush by stating that it is hard for him to be logical for hours on end on his radio show. Unfortunately the author did not refute arguments from Rush's radio show. In fact all of them, as far as I remember, are cited from Rush's book. It's not hard to maintain logical consistency for 200 pages. The arguments are cited verbatim from Rush's book "The Way things ought to be" and therefore the author is not guilty of taking Rush out of context. The book was mostly entertaining {eg. Rush's arguments, and the realization that they are littered with more fallacies than I thought}, but somewhat annoying - especially when the author tried to fix the majority of Rush's argument. An invalid/weak argument is an invalid/weak and trying to fix it makes it an entirely different argument. By the way, did anyone know that he uses invalid and cogent to describe the same argument forms? Cogency refers to inductive arguments and validity refers to deductive arguments. When did the editor not catch this? For what this book is worth, you can pick it up and run through it in a couple of hours. With respect to accusations of liberal bias - there is none. The author takes great care to stick with logic and undermine the arguments solely using the tools of logic and not politics. It's amazing how some people don't actually read what they're reading.

Excellent Introduction to Logic and the Study of Fallacies
Logic and Mr. Limbaugh: A Dittohead's Guide To Fallacious Reading

Notice all the bad reviews posted here of this book mimic the baseless mudslinging style of Limbaugh himself (calling the author a "marxist," etc. with no reference to the fallacies pointed out in the book).

My criticism of this book is it's a little wordy and not as direct as it could be, although it's a good thing Perkins is constantly bending over backwards to give Limbaugh the benefit of any doubts.The book would be an excellent introduction to logic and fallacies to a beginning student, and no one can provide a richer source of fallacies from which to draw from better than Rush Limbaugh.I actually like to play 'Name that Fallacy" when listening to Limbaugh, because they come fast and furious.Of course nowadays he has plenty of competition from Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, etc., all enjoying the lucrative biz of manipulative fallacy.

It's actually very sad these people have built such lucrative careers employing fallacy--it's sad one can be so successful in base manipulation in this day and age, and in this once-great nation.Limbaugh has contributed greatly to denigrating and crippling our language by subverting objectivity for spin, and spawning and encouraging so many, even in politics and in the current administration, to practice the same.Notice how Limbaugh--according to himself--has never been wrong or mistaken? Exactly. Anything and everything can be spun to the gullible.A very sad development for this world.

"Logic and Mr. Limbaugh...": a Non-sequitor?
This is an important book as it releases some helium in the grotesquely huge balloon that is Rush Limbaugh's stratospheric success. He is the guy who identified the neo-Silent Majority as a serious demographic for radio, in the early days of the Info.-Tainment industrial complex.
As a layman logician, I found the book very hard to read and enjoy, as it's written in a rather dry seminar style; in fact, in spots I found myself defering to Mr. Rush, in the sense that: how is anyone supposed to cut a 100% fresh and lucid live show practically every day of the week in the toughest market in the world? Can anyone weigh their words to make perfect sense even part of the time?
The problem is that a from-the-hip statement can be frivolous and reasonable and thought-provoking at the same time. So the Radio Host is doing his job, keeping his show on the road while anchored to that supposed golden microphone in the green apple.
The book is replete with absurd non-sequitors and shakey analogies taken from actual Rush broadcasts, covering subjects like sex education, drug programs, North American infants' effects on the earth's environment.
An example of the twisted up position a reader can get into, on the other hand, is with the issue of AIDS. Limbaugh is saying that there is a striking, shocking incidence of condom failure which can lead to AIDS, and so abstinence is the only safe way for an unmarried to go (the cheating spouse issue is not addressed....). He is right, unless a person is negligent about wearing gloves or applying bandages while caring for an infected person whose blood penetrates an open, wet cut of the caregiver. The author counters this by saying that even if the "protection" fails, there's a very remote mathematical chance of transmission. Both are right,

Memories of a Kansas publicity hack
The spine says Four Star Press, it should say One Star. This is a so called Hollywood Publicist that can't even spell Peter Bogdanovich's name right. His biggest claim to fame is that Rush Limbaugh was in his wedding party. If you're interested in legends such as Peggy Rea and Julie Warner, which stars come from the Kansas City area or publicity events like the Kansas City Tap Challenge, this book comes highly recommended. Coulter, Limbaugh, et al, are unamerican & unchristian
This book shows how awful Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter, Beck, et al, are. They claim to be "good" Americans and Christians.Yet their behavior and statements are very unamerican and unchristian.They are hypocrites of the first water.They knowingly tell lies, half-truths, and distortions, and are very rude to people who disagree with them. Why do some people like them?

They wouldn't know a real liberal if one walked up and saluted. They consider themselves "culture warriors" in a one-sided "war"; they had to invent an "enemy".So they chose to demonize liberals.Please note the people who consider themselves "conservative" or "liberal" are not walking stereotypes.Each group is composed of millions of individual human beings each with his/her own unique personal opinions about things.

While I am not a fan of Hannity, I do watch O'reily and listen to Limbaugh. I found it laughable to read the characterizations of them both by this author. Bill O is by far the most honest opinon guy on television and I think that is what makes people like this author so angry....

Limbaugh on an almost daily basis will talk about what people will say about him and regularly will make a statement, then tell the audience what the Democrat Dominated Mainstream Media will say about what he said. This author as usual falls right into that trap.

A typical hate filled far left bent take on these people and in this case the writing comes from a 4th grade level. Again I wonder if this author has ever listend to any of these people for any great length of time.

None of these people this author writes about are hateful, as he would have you believe and anyone who has listned to them knows this FACT ! They simply believe in smaller government and dispise socialism, as the majority of Americans do.

This is an interesting biography of Limbaugh, and the story of how he rose to the "biggest" talk show host in America, making history and breaking all kinds of records.

Love him or hate him, this is an interesting story. And it's undeniable that Limbaugh has made a huge impact on radio, journalism, and his talk format is now being mimicked by Fox News, CNN, and even the liberals on MSNBC.

If you listen to Limbaugh, you probably already know a few of these stories - things Limbaugh talks about openly, like his birth place of Cape Girardo, his early broadcast jobs in Kansas City and Sacramento. But this goes into much more detail, including some jobs where he *bombed* and/or got fired!!

An interesting read.

An Actual Balanced Account
This is neither an expose nor a ballyhoo (despite the subtitle, "Talent On Loan From God", which is a phrase Limbaugh often applies to himself) but is straightforward account of an intelligent butaimless man who eventually wanders into the role of the biggest thing intalk radio.

If it has a fault it's that it's too dry, but you'll find alot of interesting events that foreshadow his future career as the right'sspokesman. For instance, how he was fired from his DJ job for contantlyplaying the Rolling Stones'"Under My Thumb", probably the mostmisogynistic rock song of all time. ... Read more

Damn good read
I read this book a long time ago and from what I remember , it was an excellent read that is still applicable to this day so when asked , I highly recommend it.

Rush Limbaugh changed my life!
I used to think I was a so-called liberal, but was actually conservative all this time. In reading They Way Things Ought To Be changed my life for the best! I used to suffer from depression, and was kind of a self-defeating liberal in many ways. The Way Things Ought To Be erased all my depression, it ignited a fire and a passion for life in me, and the book makes 100% sense. I am a libertarian conservative, and believe in freedom, and being the best that I can be in everything I do. This book will make you demand personal greatness from yourself. I love Rush Limbaugh for changing my life, and for awakening a real lust for life in me. Rush rocks! He is not a narrow-minded, racist, homophobe.
