Product Description
As one of the most outstanding Christian thinkers in history, John Henry Newman continues to influence theology, especially Catholic theology, long after his death in 1890. Yet, his writings on faith, particularly The Grammar of Assent, are difficult to read without guidance and direction. John Henry Newman: A View of Catholic Faith for the New Millennium provides both a comprehensive introduction to Newman's theology and a thorough analysis of its relevance for the Church today. The first systematic analysis of Newman's thought, this book skillfully weaves together the Cardinal's diverse writings on faith with seminal secondary sources and presents an integrated view of his mature notion of Catholic faith. Enhanced by a detailed introduction, biographical sketch, and bibliography, this book explores John Henry Newman's teaching on the relationship between faith and doubt, the role of the will in certitude, the relationship between faith and reason, the personal nature of faith, the function of the magisterium, the importance of dialogue, and the role of the conscience in decision-making. The concluding chapter examines the significance of Newman's thought for Catholic theology today. ... Read more

Product Description
In this timely and clearly written text, John Van Oudenaren traces how the original six-member common market evolved into the twenty-five-member European Union (EU) with its growing array of policy responsibilities. Providing an accessible overview of the institutions, laws, and policies of the Union, he chronicles the EU's emergence as a global economic power and its efforts to assert its political presence on the world stage. The author argues that the federalist aspiration to create a _United States of Europe_ has died but that the drive to union persists in other forms. In the coming years, the EU will be challenged by a daunting agenda that includes making a success of the 2004 enlargement, improving the lagging performance of the EU economy, ensuring the continued success of the euro, finalizing a European constitution, and reconciling the desires of the member states to protect elements of their sovereignty with the widespread goal of achieving a more cohesive and effective foreign and security policy. A new chapter deals specifically with the contentious EU-U.S. relationship and the efforts of policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic to build an effective partnership, notwithstanding strains over trade, the Kyoto Protocol, the war in Iraq, and other divisive issues. ... Product Description

Throughout her life, Catharine Littlefield Greene struggled to clear her own place as an individual within a society that was itself fighting for its place as an independent nation. In Caty, John and Janet Stegeman follow the life of a woman whose spirit and determination led her far beyond the domestic concerns of most women of her day.

The wife of Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, Caty was a close friend of George and Martha Washington, a business partner of Eli Whitney, and mistress of two Georgia plantations. As a voracious reader who preferred the company of men to that of women, Caty courted gossip and near scandal as she, unlike most of the women of her time, maintained friendships with men, most of whom were friends of her husband. Indeed, Nathanael Greene encouraged Caty to join in the political discussions he and his friends enjoyed, and at such gatherings Caty found herself at the center of the tumultuous activity of the Revolution.

Caty also came to know firsthand the effects of the political discussions. As a devoted wife and the mother of five children, Caty faced the challenges of trying to maintain a semblance of normal family life in the cruel circumstances of war, of shouldering in the absence of her husband the financial responsibilities and burdens usually reserved for men.

Although many of Caty’s concerns reflected those of other women of her time, her story, Harvey Jackson suggests in his forward, has importance even beyond the study of women in the years surrounding the Revolution. Caty witnessed and at times participated in some of the most crucial events in the history of the new nation, and her story adds an additional degree of definition to our knowledge of our national origins.

5-0 out of 5 stars America's most powerful woman?
If you're interested in rev war history, don't miss this book.It provides an unusual perspective into the life and times of one of America's greatest heroes, Nathanael Greene. But, it also opens an entirely new appreciation and understanding of Catharine herself, a woman to personifies many of the struggles of that time.

Catharine Greene became one of the most identifiable women of the rev war period. She combines beauty, intelligence, sexuality and independence to create a fascinating life both as the wife of General Greene and as his widow. The only modern day comparison I can make is Princess Diana!

You'll be amazed by the life of Catharine Greene and the events that shaped our heritage.Did you know she had a hand in the invention of the cotton gin? That's just one of the amazing events in the life of this American heroine. This is a very good book for anyone, but some rev war historical knowledge will help your appreciation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arevolutionary lady with spunk!
Caty was the young wife of Gen. Nathanael Greene. Not content to stay home with the children, she joined her husband in winter quarters at Monmouth NJ (where she gave birth to one of their sons) and Valley ForgePA. The author wrote this biography based on their letters. ... Read more

A Gripping Look at How Industry Turbulence Grounded One of the World’s Great Airlines

Falcon Airlines was one of America’s highest-flying carriers. Airline deregulation changed the industry’s flight plan by ending years of government protection and ushering in the harsh realities of competition. Now, under siege from lower-cost and more nimble airlines, Falcon is faced with the most turbulent era in its history – one that will ultimately bring down the mighty airline and upend the lives of its 40,000 employees.

Death of the Falcon chronicles the company’s epic struggles – the boardroom battles, union hall tussles and labor strikes – in its final years. Based on a true story, this fictionalized account goes behind locked doors to reveal the larger-than-life personalities who leave their mark: bankers eager to cut their losses, takeover artists angling for a fire sale, union leaders trying to maintain cushy benefits and managers desperately trying for a soft landing. Caught up in the strikes and plotting are Captain Andrew Logan and flight attendant Ellen Lancaster, two long-time employees whose devotion to their airline is matched by their love for each other. It’s a remarkably personal story set amid the cold realities of market reorganization and staggering financial losses.

Culminating in the company’s chaotic last hours when old alliances falter, the book shows a death of a thousand cuts from dynamics still in play today as America’s carriers vie for survival in our increasingly competitive world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars true to life experience
I flew for 20 years. this book took me back to those golden years, when flying was still a great profession. the
history is good, the story is fun.airline people will especially enjoy this book, as will airline wannabe's. it explains the destruction of airlines and safety due to deregulation and greed. it also helps consumers learn
what makes flight crews 'tick', how different airlines can be, and how cutthroat unions can.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for all walks of life
An informative story that provides insight into the politics that went on behind the scenes of management struggling to save Falcon Airlines during its tumultuous final years. The love between employees Captain Logan and flight attendant Ellen Lancaster coinciding to the events leading up to the demise of the airline adds an emotional twist and a dimension to the storyline that brings it to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
A Must Read!

The Death of the Falcon is a stirring sage on many different levels. Littlefield's knowledge and insights into his subject matter adds depth to a unknown, yet important industry. Littlefield uncovers the essential quality that makes an ordinary man truly great.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About the Airlines
I'm an aspiring pilot, so when I found out about this book, it was on my must-read list.

Although I was already set on reading the it, the first chapter really reeled me in.The story begins heading towards the Bahamas.Everything was checking out fine until one of the engine fails.Soon, the other engines fail as well. The pilots suddenly find themselves gliding across the Atlantic Ocean.Miraculously, they are able to restart one of the engines and are able to safely land in Miami.

I was hooked!

Death of the Falcon gives you an in-depth (and sad) look inside the airline industry. It tells the true story of an airline's demise, corporate politics, loyalties, and a love story. As I read through, I became attached to the characters and got a real sense of who they were.I teared up at some parts, especially of Captain Logan and Ellen's relationship and Captain Logan's treatment from other pilots during the strike.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by Littlefield.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can hear the old pilots
Very well written fictionalized story of the demise of an airline giant of the time. Appropriate for these times as well as we are facing more consolidation and union reorganizations. This book reads very well and covers a lot of historical ground. It is an interesting look at the airline industry of the past and perhaps a foretelling of things we may see again. But to be honest what made this story for me was the husband - wife relationship of Logan and Lancaster. In one moment this book is solidified in the strength of a defiant wife standing up for a husband who had done what had to be one of the most difficult things ever . . . all for his wife. ...
