Product Description
In 'Albemarle,' photographer Robert Llewellyn and writer Avery Chenoweth explore how the landscape of Albemarle County, where the Virginia piedmont meets the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its people have helped create an American sense of identity.

Complemented by Llewellyn's luxurious color photography, the narrative rolls back 15,000 years to the first signs of human habitation, continues through the Colonial period, and arrives in the modern era. The story traces the evolving culture of landscape as it has been played out in the lives of historic figures, from the Monacans to the Moderns, Thomas Jefferson to Lady Bird Johnson, Edgar Allan Poe to Teddy Roosevelt. With a sweeping view of aesthetics, spirituality, religion, and history, the book itself is a work of art, essential reading, and viewing, for anyone who has lived in, or been inspired by, the landscape of Albemarle County. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Book Production Flawed
Nothing wrong with the content of the book but for a coffee table book, this one from Amazon had several flaws.Yes the cost was less than buying at the bookstore but the bookstore copy probably wouldn't have wrinkled pages and pages still stuck together with the edges uncut.Really shoddy quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Real Thing
As a teenager, I spent years wandering around the Albemarle County countryside. Not literally wandering for the whole year, but a still lot of time in all seasons. More than 10 years later I've still yet to see everything, as Albemarle is rather like a small European country. Small but remarkably varied with pockets of unique 'kingdoms' hidden all around.

Anyway, in all those days of wandering through fields of llamas, being chased by farmed buffalo and generally getting lost in the woods at all hours, Albemarle County never looked this good. It is remarkable how truly picturesque this place becomes through the lens and pen of the photographer and the author. Much better than the real thing.

If you are interested in Albemarle, you don't need to come here and see it yourself. Stay at home and read this book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos from a former resident of Charlottesville
Don't be deceived by the physical dimensions of Albemarle and beautiful photos it contains. This is more than just a coffee table book, thanks to Wingtips author Avery Chenoweth's elevating prose. The book will manage to trigger the sensory memories of anyone who has ever spent any time Charlottesville.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a fabulous book for anyone who lives in, has ever visited, or has ever even thought of visiting Albemarle County, V.A. The history is extremely well written, and the photographs are out-of-this-world beautiful! I highly recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years!
My only complaint is that it's too short! So I'll add my own anecdote.

We don't fight or argue. If we disagree, she throws up her hands and says "I'm not going there!". Then she simply does what she wants without telling me, since I "tried to start a fight" by disagreeing with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, funny, and oh so true.A perfect anniversary gift.
I bought this along with it's counterpart, "I Love Him, But..." and my wife and I spent many nights laying in bed, laughing and pointing fingers. We've since bought a half-dozen copies and sent them out to our married friends.

To write this book they interviewed hundreds of happily married men and asked them to name their wive's most endearing or annoying little quirks. We both saw ourselves on many of the pages, and it's a sign of a good relationship when you can find the humor in it.

The book itself is rather small, only about 4 inches square, and each page contains a quote from a different man. Some examples:

'...her jewelry's all over the house.I find earrings in the shower, in bed, on the kitchen counter, on the stove. Then she's always late, panicked, because she can't find them. She's sure we've been robbed."

"...everything has to be sterile. She scrubbed the cage with ammonia and killed the guinea pig."

"...she rearranges me when I sleep.Turns my head, covers me, uncovers me, pushes me on my side."

"...she talks to 'Mr. Johnson' like he's a seperate person with a mind and personality all his own."

And on and on.Highly recommended for stable couples with good senses of humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even I thought this was funny--and I'm one of the "her's"!
My husband received this book as a gift a number of years ago. I read it before he did and thought it was great! I saw not only myself in this book but my husband as well. I highly recommend this book if you want a good laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reminder for all of us.
I bought this book for my husband on a whim as a reminder that he is not alone and that it all depends on perspective.A definite book to keep reminding whomever you love that your little quirks aren't any different from anyone else's. And everyone has quirks! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many more positives than negatives
I'm a trainer on global supply management. I'm also the author of a 1996 book on the topic that stayed in print for about 7 years. Before that I was a practitioner, founding a chain of IPOs back in the 1980s.
When I read this book, I marked plus signs and minus signs in the margins for sections I especially liked and those I thought could be improved. At the end, there were a lot more plus signs than minus signs.

I can't help comparing this book to mine. Mine was aimed at the mid level people who are actually buying internationally. This one seems aimed at upper management of companies that are trying to decide whether to buy internationally or not. As such, the authors list potential problems in great detail but spend less time in showing how to solve them.

To me, the best and most thought-provoking part of the book are the last five chapters. They are collectively called "Pursuing Global Supply Excellence." The authors do an excellent job of raising strategic questions and proposing solutions. I wish I had read it before I went overseas!

The minus signs were in two areas. One was the lack of detail in solving the problems they identified. However, that's really not the goal of the book.

The second area essentially comes down overstating logistic problems. They seem to assume that goods will travel by ocean and transit times will be long. However, if air freight is economically feasible, no major airport is more than a day further away than New York is from San Francisco.

Others called this book a "must read." That's true if your company is trying to decide whether to source internationally. However, don't assume that reading the book will enable employees to solve the problems the authors mention. On that basis I'd call the book necessary but not sufficient for success.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
The book, "Managing Global Supply and Risk: Best Practices, Concepts, and Strategies", is especially relevant today with its emphasis on managing global suppliers. It provides comprehensive material to understand the costs, benefits and tradeoffs associated with sourcing globally. Of special note are the numerous real examples which highlight key points throughout the book. For example: the case illustration regarding Ohio Art moving its sourcing spend to China highlights the trade-off between cost and uncertainty. The book is hard to put down once you start reading it because it is really easy to read, current and relevant. Bob Trent and Llewellyn Roberts have delivered an excellent source of information - A MUST READ - for every supply management professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Dr. Trent
Once again Dr. Trent has written a must read for the Supplier Management world. His knowledge in the field allows his to write to a deep level on many topics within the field.MUST READ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great read for supply managers!!!
"Managing Global Supply and Risk--Best Practices, Concepts, and Strategies" is a book that every procurement and supply manager should read. With outsourcing becoming more international, companies are finding it a challenge to manage these complicated supply channels.Trent and Roberts provide a detailed and fundamental understanding of managing global supply chains by reviewing the background and current states of outsourcing. The book shows the history of outsourcing, current topics in international supply, and the future of international sourcing. The authors also supplement the topics with real examples of international sourcing and shared best practices, which makes concepts easy to understand. The book suggests that in order for companies to thrive in a global environment, they need to set criteria for supplier selection, create meaningful performance metrics, and continually work with suppliers to become the preferred customers and gain the competitive advantage. Finally, the authors acknowledge that global supply is forever changing and recommend a set of principles that companies should incorporate into their cultures to cope with change. ... Product Description
In its third year, "Scraphead Challenge" is one of Channel 4's most successful Sunday evening series, with a regular audience of over three million viewers. It's a knockout competition for amateur engineers - each week, two new teams of madcap mechanics have to work against the clock to build a specific machine from whatever junk they can scavenge. "Behind the Scenes at Scrapheap Challenge" looks at what goes on behind the camera as well as on screen, using six case studies from the series and scores of colour photographs. The teams have just ten hours to come up with the goods and get one step nearer to the season finale. The book follows the would-be engineers and presenters Robert Llewellyn and Cathy Rodgers' progress as the competition hots up. Through the interviews with the cast and crew, we discover what it's really like to take up the "Scrapheap Challenge". ... Read more
