Product Description
Frank Lloyd Wright Jr., known as Lloyd Wright (1870-1978), is arguably one of the greatest undiscovered architects of the 20th century. Over a ten year period, architectual photographer Alan Weintraub has documented his buildings in colour and in fine detail. This monograph offers a comprehensive presentation of Lloyd Wright's complete oeuvre. Lloyd Wright had a style all of his own. His gemlike construction fusing landscape with built form, are syntheses of nature, regional modernism and exoticism. He built most of his work in southern California, mainly in unassuming neighbourhoods of Los Angeles. This extensively illustrated book features nearly 600 images. At the book's heart are 32 of Wright's buildings, and the reference section includes an illustrated chronology with archival sketches and images of unbuilt works. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lloyd Wright: The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.
Good photos, well written, honest. Recommend for those who don't know too much about the son of a famous architect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally...
I've long marveled at Lloyd Wright's Southern California residences and wondered when a book like this might appear. His buildings are so sensual, complex and full of surprises that any large-format photo collectioncouldn't help but be magnificently beautiful. And this one certainly is.My only diappointments with the book came in regard to the paucity offloorplans and the many extant buildings which receive only a token mentionand a tiny photo in the appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars He has his father's genes.
The photos of the Wayfarer's chapel in Palos Verdes, CA is worth half the price of the book. I know it had a profound influence on an architect friend, Lee A. Ward A.I.A. in Napa,on his way to Taliasen West. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent read, but not spectacular
A movie is being made in Toronto about a Nazi war criminal who has been hiding for decades, but is discovered and pursued. Suddenly, the movie set is sabotaged and vandalized with swastikas. Then, the writer is killed. Who's doing it? There are plenty of suspects and Inspector Charlie Salter sifts through the evidence in his slow but steady manner in order to find the culprit.

That, in a nutshell, is the book. It's a decent read, but not spectacular by any means. I liked the ending because it was not all wrapped up in a neat little package, like it was the end of a Scooby-Doo mystery. I get tired of that.

The main characters are interesting. The book reinforces my impression of movie-making - it is a tedious business, filled with lots of waiting and big egos.

5-0 out of 5 stars from back cover
Sometimes the movie biz can be murder. Is it malicious mischief, or something more sinister? That's the question for Staff Inspector Charlie Salter, working undercover as a police "adviser" to a movie crew shooting in Toronto.A fake fire alarm, a missing can of film, a damaged sound machine, and a kidnapped actor are merely opening salvos in what appears to be an attempt to halt production on this ill-fated film. Yet who among the bickering cast and crew would want to see the movie fail? Could it be the Easter European actor who's made a name for himself playing villians; the arrogant, egocentric star; the flakey first assistant director; or the obnoxious screenwriter who's on everyone's hit list? It's a reel-life mystery that has Charlie Salter dreading the next scene. But when the leading man is mugged and a prime player is found with a dagger through his chest, Salter takes the lead in a homicidal drama that stretches from Toronto to Bucharest, on a trail steeped in blood, retribution, and corrosive memory. ... Product Description
When Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed the Darwin D. Martin House complex (1903-1905), he filled the windows, doors, skylights, and laylights with nearly four hundred pieces of his signature art glass. The spectacular designs, abstractions of the architecture and surrounding environment, are among some of Wright's finest. These "light screens," as Wright called them, were fundamental to his principle of "bringing the outside in" by blurring the line between enclosed and open spaces.

Despite the site-specific nature of Wright's art glass, nearly three-quarters of the pieces at the Martin House complex have been removed--many of them distributed to museums and private collections throughout the world. Today, due to the tremendous reconstruction efforts by the Martin House Restoration Corporation, the art glass designs are being restored to their original home. Only now, in their original context, is it possible to fully appreciate the importance of these "light screens" to Wright's overall composition for the Martin House complex.

Edited by Martin House curator Eric Jackson-Forsberg, with additional text by Theodore Lownie, Robert McCarter, and Jack Quinan and an introduction by art glass expert Julie Sloan, Frank Lloyd Wright: Art Glass of the Martin House Complex explores the breadth of Wright's iconic iridescent creations for the Martin House. Full-color images accompany Jackson-Forsberg's insightful text to provide examples of the major patterns and motifs represented in the Martin House, in addition to an assortment of rare variations and outlying designs. Original drawings, historic photographs, floor plans, and excerpts from Wright's personal correspondence add to this comprehensive survey of the exquisite art glass designs found at Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House complex. ... Product Description

The Cult of Art in Nazi Germany presents a new interpretation of National Socialism, arguing that art in the Third Reich was not simply an instrument of the regime, but actually became a source of the racist politics upon which its ideology was founded. Through the myth of the “Aryan race,” a race pronounced superior because it alone creates culture, Nazism asserted art as the sole raison d’être of a regime defined by Hitler as the “dictatorship of genius.”Michaud shows the important link between the religious nature of Nazi art and the political movement, revealing that in Nazi Germany art was considered to be less a witness of history than a force capable of producing future, the actor capable of accelerating the coming of a reality immanent to art itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably erudite and exceptionally well argued
Eric Michaud's book is an erudite marvel of cultural and intellectual history. Not only does it complement and improve on existing accounts of the role of art in Nazism (particularly the tradition stemming from George L. Mosse's work), it intelligently argues for a rethinking of art's importance in the Nazi project of a new Europe-wide order.

Michaud connects art to the Christian and voelkish aspects of Nazism, as well as to the Hitler-cult and the attempt at a total mobilization and domination of society. His discussion of individual artworks, in the context of both art history and Michaud's philosophical treatment of culture helps explain the political and political pervasiveness of Nazism and brings together a number of tropes and issues that, though seemingly disparate, can now be shown as central and well-connected. The analysis of racism is original and useful; so is the discussion of Nazism's fantasy of its relationship to time and its construction of its own eternity.

The review below is motivated and pointlessly unfair: Michaud's research is extremely wide-ranging and very well put together. This book will be debated by scholars for a long time and, being eminently readable, informative on every page, and well-rounded as an interpretation of the genealogy of modern European culture and the destructive power of nazism, it is worth reading several times. ... Excerpt: John Richard Hersey (June 17, 1914 March 24, 1993) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist considered one of the earliest practitioners of the so-called New Journalism, in which storytelling devices of the novel are fused with non-fiction reportage. Hersey's account of the aftermath of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, was adjudged the finest piece of journalism of the 20th century by a 36-member panel under the aegis of New York University's journalism department. Born in Tientsin, China, to missionaries Roscoe and Grace Baird Hersey, John Hersey learned to speak Chinese before he spoke English. He returned to the United States with his family when he was ten years old. Later Hersey attended the Hotchkiss School, followed by Yale University, where he was a member of Skull and Bones society. He subsequently was a graduate student at Cambridge as a Mellon Fellow. Following his time at Cambridge, Hersey got a summer job as private secretary and driver for author Sinclair Lewis in 1937, but he chafed at his duties, and that fall he began work at Time, where he was hired after writing an essay on the magazine's dismal quality. Two years later he was transferred to Time's Chongqing bureau.
