Product Description

Andrew Lloyd Webber is the most famous—and most controversial—composer of musical theater alive today. Hundreds of millions of people have seen his musicals, which include Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and Sunset Boulevard. Even more know his songs.

Lloyd Webber’s many awards include seven Tonys and three Grammys—but he has nonetheless been the subject of greater critical vitriol than any of his artistic peers. Why have both the man and his work provoked such extreme responses? Does he challenge his audiences, or merely recycle the comfortable and familiar? Over three decades, how has Lloyd Webber changed fundamentally what a musical can be?

In this sustained examination of Lloyd Webber’s creative career, the music scholar John Snelson explores the vast range of influences that have informed Lloyd Webber’s work, from film, rock, and pop music to Lloyd Webber’s own life story. This rigorous and sympathetic survey will be essential reading for anyone interested in Lloyd Webber’s musicals and the world of modern musical theater that he has been so instrumental in shaping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good academic treatment
John Snelson's book is a good academic treatment of Lloyd Webber's work, not a biography. Snelson looks at Lloyd Webber's work as a whole, comparing themes, Lloyd Webber's maturation as a composer, other elements of his work and posits Lloyd Webber as a Broadway Master. While it may lean a little too favorable to the composer, particularly with regards to his recycling of previous material, it is a good read and probably the most insightful look at his work that I have read. ... Jesus Christ Superstar. Evita. Cats. The Phantom of the Opera. Webber's hit parade of West End and Broadway musicals has established him as the foremost theatrical composer of our time. In this biography, Walsh examines his personal motivations and professional methods. 100 illustrations, 80 in full color.Amazon.com Review
In Andrew Lloyd Webber Michael Walsh offers a detailed biography of the composer of Evita and Cats. He chronicles the triumphs and tragedies of Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, the film version of Evita, his third marriage, and thefinancial upheaval at The Really Useful Company, Lloyd Webber's production group. Walsh attempts to hack through the mass of Fleet Street sensationalism and get at what is really happening in the life of this talented, troubled man. The book offers a fascinating mix of musical analysis and keyhole peeping, along with 175 color and black-and-white photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!
Okay, so there is very limited published information about Andrew Lloyd Webber, although ther eis plenty about his shows, there is little about the man himself. This is why this book is a great buy.

I find Walsh gets himself into a repeated pattern with each chapter, and the sypnosis of each story becomes very tiresome and the the musical analysis (ie, a key signature and time signature) is not really worth doing.Any five year old can open Lloyd Webbers music and find out the key and time signature.I wanted more detail about the music.

The book I brought was the reprinted one with information about Sunset, Whistle and the movie of Evita, although it was already worth the reprint and these chapters are no where near as enthused or informative as the previous chapters.Very disappointing, but still a great buy and well worth getting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for all fans of Lloyd Webber and his work.
This is a must-have for Lloyd Webber fans; it truly is an in-depth account of his life and work.Packed full of information and many photographs, it was an interesting read.It has been claimed that Walsh concentrates too much on the chapter featuring "Phantom of the Opera", but I for one cannot blame him!Walsh has reason to, as he states "Phantom" was the first musical where Lloyd Webber developed his more mature style and a strong sense of key association than in his previous musicals. (He also admits it was after viewing "Phantom" he had the notion to write the book in the first place.)

The only reason why I would not give this book the full five stars is the fact it may be somewhat frustrating to read for musicologists and music students who wish to study Lloyd Webber's style in depth. Walsh tantalizes the reader with only brief excursions into analysis of the music; e.g. very brief descriptions of the keys and rhythms the songs are in, with no printed musical examples on how Lloyd Webber constructs the fabric of his scores.

However, in all, I would certainly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great info; okay writer....
My first impression of this book was that Michael Walsh must only be a fan of The Phantom of the Opera. It honestly seems to be the only show that he doesn't have an unkind word for. However, once you get past the comments that might be offensive to serious fans, you find a great wealth of material on the inside life of Lord Lloyd Webber.Everything is covered in this book, from the origins of his nickname (Bumper) to Jean's pet monkeys and days in "Bohemian" Lloyd Webberdom, to the recent revivals and productions of his shows.Even the musical structures of some songs from each show are analyzed. This is only the beginning; there is lots of great information that any fan will find infinitely interesting. Now if only Mr. Walsh would lighten up....

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Collection!
My daughter loves everything Andrew Lloyd Webber and this is no exception. The music is exactly what you remember from the movies - in other words - it's not watered down. The piano parts are challenging and beautiful and all of the best songs are included.Would buy again in a heartbeat.

5-0 out of 5 stars no complaints
Well printed, well bound. Some music books are so tightly bound that they're almost unusable for piano-playing unless you break down the adhesive at the edge. This one opens flat enough to "stay put."
The size and clarity of print is excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview once you get past the fluff
I am not much for fluff, and the glossy, heavy paper, along with the pretty full-color photos are just money and space wasted where more songs could have been. However this is a good selection of ALW's work, and is especially valuable to the soloist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Sample of Webber's earlier work
This is an excellent sampling of much of Webber's earlier works - published in 1988, it obviously doesn't include music from later productions, such as "Sunset Boulevard", "Aspects of Love", "Bombay Dreams" or "Woman in White".As a result, this anthology showcases some of Webber's lesser-known (but still absolutely brilliant) songs, such as "Take That Look Off Your Face" and the title song from "Tell Me On a Sunday", "Herod's Song" (an absolute treat for the pianist who enjoys rag) from Jesus Christ Superstar"; "There's Me" from "Starlight Express".This volume also includes some of his biggest hits from "Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita".This book is a great buy if you want to learn the best songs from each show, and don't want to be bothered to buy the book from each show to just get one or two songs.

This is also a great book for intermediate-advanced piano students who want some "modern" music to supplement their regular music books. The various musical styles represented in this book really complement a traditional course of study in the piano. My parents bought me this book when I was 12 (14 years ago) to use as "extra" assignments for my piano lessons, and I ate it up and learned every single song in the book.I still use it now, even though I have to be careful with it (I've loved it so much that the pages are starting to come loose).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music!
Andrew Lloyd Webber is a brilliant composer and playwright. If you love singing or playing broadway music, than this book is for you. From slow songs like Unexpected Song and Wishing you Were Somehow Here Again to more upbeat songs like Take That Look Off Your Face and Jesus Christ Superstar, this book covers almost all of his musicals and is absolutly wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Easy to play!
If you by chance are hoping to sing a number from "Phantom of the Opera", or maybe you want to learn how to play "Don't Cry for me Argentina" on the piano, than this is the book for you. This book andit's second volume come complete with vocals and the musical notes.A mustbuy for performer and andrew Lloyd Webber fans! ... Product Description
The New York Times called Stephen Sondheim "the greatest and perhaps best known artist in the American musical theater," while two months earlier, the same paper referred to his contemporary, Andrew Lloyd-Webber as "the most commercially successful composer in history." Whatever their individual achievements might be, it is agreed by most critics that these two colossi have dominated world musical theater for the last quarter century and hold the key to the direction the musical stage will take in the future.
Here in the third volume of Stephen Citron's distinguished series The Great Songwriters--in depth studies that illuminated the musical contributions, careers, and lives of Noel Coward and Cole Porter (Noel & Cole: The Sophisticates), and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd and Alan Jay Lerner, (The Wordsmiths)--this eminent musicologist has taken on our two leading contemporary contributors to the lyric stage. His aim has not been to compare or judge one's merits over the other, but to make the reader discover through their works and those of their contemporaries, the changes and path of that glorious artform we call Musical Theater.
In his quest, Citron offers unique insight into each artist's working methods, analyzing their scores--including their early works and works-in-progress. As in Citron's previously critically acclaimed books in this series, great significance is given to the impact their youthful training and private lives have had upon their amazing creative output. Beginning with Sondheim's lyrics-only works, West Side Story, Gypsy, Do I Hear A Waltz? through his scores for Saturday Night, Company, Anyone Can Whistle, Follies, Pacific Overtures, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday In the Park, Into the Woods, Assassins, and Passion, all these milestones of musical theater have been explored. Lloyd-Webber's musical contribution from his early works, The Likes of Us and Joseph to Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Starlight Express, Aspects of Love, By Jeeves, The Phantom of the Opera, Song & Dance, Mass, Sunset Boulevard to Whistle Down the Wind are also thoroughly analyzed.
The works of these two splendid artists are clarified for the casual or professional reader in context with their contemporaries. Complete with a quadruple chronology (Sondheim, Lloyd-Webber, US Theater, British Theater), copious quotations from their works, and many never before published illustrations, the future of the artform that is the crowning achievement of the 20th century is made eminently clear in this book. Sondheim & Lloyd-Webber is a must-read for anyone interested in the contemporary theater. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Wasted Opportunity
This could have been a really interesting comparison, and there are some nice touches in this book, but ultimately the author skirts the most interesting questions in favor of some tired cliches.

Other reviewers on this page have carped about Lloyd Webber's name. If they're referring to the hyphen, they should have read a little more carefully. He explains his use of the hyphen in a footnote on the bottom of page 49.

On the positive side, Citron solves the task of the dual biography pretty well. One of the big problems in writing a book comparing two composers born 18 years apart is the use of time. Obviously, you have to tell the stories chronologically, you can't spend too much time on one of them without switching to the other, and then at some point, the issue of what each of them is working on simultaneously becomes interesting, so a constant 18 year delay would be off-putting. Somehow Citron manages to bring their narratives together around Harold Prince, and chronologically ties the two stories around the time when Prince went from Sondheim's Sweeney to Lloyd Webber's Evita. Before that, we're hearing about the shows on a weird time warp, and after that, it's fairly chronological. This is a neat touch, and Hal Prince is actually the main thing the two have in common.

I found a pretty egregious example of plagiarism in the book, around a topic that gets short shrift in the book; musical analysis. On page 360, Citron cribs an 88 word passage from Joseph Swain's book The Broadway Musical, A Critical And Musical Survey (Oxford, 1990) Incredibly, even though the book he's borrowing from is by the same publisher, Citron doesn't credit the idea to its originator, nor does Swain's book even appear in the Bibliography. It's an unlikely and original idea he's stealing; comparing Lloyd Webber's dramatically random repeats of melody to Renaissance Contrafacta, which he wrongly pluralizes contrafactums later in the chapter. It doesn't call into question Citron's research, which appears to be fairly exhaustive, but it makes one wonder whether the book isn't just a collection of anecdotes, ideas and stories from other sources, hepfully cobbled into a collection for the curious.

Theatre fans have often put these two giants of music theatre against one another, a position neither has publicly taken. The conventional wisdom about the two is that Lloyd Webber is the consummate melodist, and that his detractors really only envy his popularity from the comfort of their ivory towers, and that Sondheim is an abstruse intellectual whose music is mired in boring repetitive structures that are incomprehensible to the public, but which are feted and admired by pointy heads who want to feel smart. Citron falls into these old cliches time and time again, missing the far more interesting issues to be probed.

For example, the portrait Citron paints of Lloyd Webber is one of a man utterly at the mercy of his lyricists and librettists for what happens on the stage, and there are a number of swipes (deservedly) taken at Sir Andrew's compositional technique, his supposed plagiarism (which is ironic, considering the source), and his orchestrational deficiencies. Any examination of Lloyd Webber's work must ask questions of how these qualities play into his work as a whole. The best Citron can come up with is to compare him to Richard Rodgers, which is an attractive thought until one remembers that Rodgers was not at the mercy of any lyricist or librettist, although he could usually command the best. In fact, Rodgers wrote music and lyrics for No Strings. And Rodgers knew harmony, melody, and the power of a reprise to do dramatic work, not just to sell a tune. It would be foolish to say that Lloyd Webber doesn't know what he's doing, but a full picture needs to address his foibles as craft issues, not merely as the carping of the intellectuals. Can you be a great musical theatre composer without caring which lyrics your tune gets assigned to? Maybe so.

Sondheim doesn't fare much better. Citron says at the end of the book that Sondheim started in the Hammerstein "heart-on-the-sleeve tradition", then abandoned it for the "honesty of ambivalence" I'm not sure what he means by "heart-on-the-sleeve" Is he referring to West Side? or Gypsy? or Saturday Night? None of those seem sentimental. (except for lyrics that Lenny probably wrote) What Sondheim got from Hammerstein was not treacly Americana, but the integration of material and story, and he learned it so well that he wrote what the story and his methodology demanded, whether the audience liked it or not. This question of whether the structural and dramatic integrity is enough to make a masterpiece without popularity is an important issue Citron isn't bothering with.

This reader would like to see somebody tackle the Sondheim/Lloyd Webber duality along more serious lines, because the answer to the questions these men pose writes the next 25 years of musical theatre. Sadly, we won't find it here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
The book helped me greatly with a paper I had to write. Very interesting insight into the two great's minds!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any fan
I found the book fascinating, as it is filled with interesting details and tidbits about these two men and their shows. It is especially useful because it focuses on the music, often showing musical examples and shedding light on things like melodic teeming and form. The other two reviews stated that Lloyd Webber's name was misspelled. Apparently, they didn't read carefully enough because it explains the reasoning for this deliberate decision is because when Lloyd Webber was knighted he chose to hyphenate his name. The book tends to favor Sondheim, but is full of interesting information about both of them and each of their shows. I can't promise that is 100% free of factual errors, but it is still a must have for anyone looking for in-depth information on these two great men.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible and embarrassing
What a terrible book this is. As with Citron's other books, this is LOADED with factual errors and misunderstandings of the shows he discusses. The first big clue is that he misspells Andrew Lloyd Webber's name throughout the entire book -- where were his editors? And he says that the period between the 1920s and 1960s was "a time when plot was secondary" in musicals. Oh really? Like in Carousel, West Side Story, Show Boat, Pal Joey, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Camelot, Gypsy, The King and I...? I feel sorry for anyone who wastes their money on this the way I did. Stay away from books by this guy -- there are so many GOOD books on muiscal theatre out there...

1-0 out of 5 stars Irresponsible Research
Citron's book is an embarrassment to any serious student of musical theater. Many of Citron's facts are erroneous (beginning with Lloyd Webber's last name which is NOT hyphenated, but appears hyphenated in every instance throughout this book). His approach to this material is very condescending. For example, he implies that A Little Night Music and Passion only won Tony Awards because there were no other decent shows that opened those years, thereby dismissing other good shows and offering backhanded compliments to Sondheim. Rumors are that the Really Useful Group is extremely embarrassed by the Lloyd Webber sections. Wait for the forthcoming Yale series on Broadway composers. ... Read more

This is one of my favorite shows. You can't get much better than Andrew Webber. The arrangements are great but you may find it a bit challengingi in some places with all the key changes.I have this book also in the Easy Piano version for my piano students. It is good to have both versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phantom of thr Opera (Easy Piano)
This book has surpassed my expectations. The music is simple enough that I can play it with very little difficulty and can add my own improvisations. I am very pleased with its simplicity. Some of the lyrics are slightly different than the movie lyrics, but the change is very insignificant.I would definitely recommend this piano book to anyone who enjoys playing the songs from this musical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faithful adaptation from stage to home
I'm obsessive-compulsive, and one of my most consuming love affairs was with Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. I first saw Phantom on my first trip to Toronto in 1992, and proceeded to see it three more times at the Pantages Theatre in the coming years. I would listen to the CDs endlessly, memorized the libretto, and bought any Phantom-related merchandise I could get my hands on, including the sheet music. At the time, I was a beginning piano student, so I purchased the Easy Piano edition, but soon after purchased the regular piano sheet music.

Nine songs from the musical are featured: Think of Me, Angel of Music, The Phantom of the Opera, Music of the Night, Prima Donna, All I Ask of You, Masquerade, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, and The Point of No Return. There are also an extensive series of stage photographs (some color, some black and white) sprinkled throughout, as well as brief bios on Lloyd Webber (composer), Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe (lyrics).

Many have argued the merit (or lack) of Lloyd Webber's composing abilities, so I'll not get into that here. The nine arrangements are piano solos (unlike some transcriptions, where the piano is relegated to the role of accompanist) of intermediate difficulty that are faithful to the stage and recorded versions, with sweeping hints of strings captured in the fluid, expressive left-hand ornaments and a foreboding sense of dread in the pounding octave baseline introduced in Angel of Music that provides a nice segue into Phantom of the Opera. Generally, the fingering is not difficult, although there's a sticky chord progression at the beginning of Phantom of the Opera that took me some practice to hammer out.

Showstopper Music of the Night is given a gentle, lullaby-like quality with a low-key arrangement for left hand, letting the melody shine. The enchanting, music-box-like Prima Donna is transformed into a slow waltz that echoes the haunting minor chord progression from Phantom of the Opera. The other standout is Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, a fragile, bell-like minor melody that blooms into an impassioned chorus and an ending that hauntingly fades away.

The learning curve is generally short, with the exception of some tricky chord progressions on Phantom, Prima Donna, and Point of No Return, and intermediate to advanced piano students should feel right at home. Note that this arrangement is piano and voice; there are no guitar tabs provided, only chords. A perfect give for your phavorite Phantom phan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection...
...but there's a couple songs that I wish were included. Still, this is my favorite book to play out of and all the songs sound great. There's a lot of 4-note chords and octaves so it gives the songs a rich and impressive quality. Some of the rhythms may be difficult to pick up if one doesn't know the song; my favorites are "As If We Never Said Goodbye" and "Music of the Night" but there are several other excellent choices. This collection really showcases Andrew Lloyd Webber's amazing talent, don't hesitate to buy any of his music. (Note: this is not an easy or intermediate book - I'm at a grade 8 level and it's been challenging.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
This book is pretty good.I bought it mainly for one song (Love Changes Everything). The songs aren't too difficult to play if you know what they are and how they are supposed to sound. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid Stuff
More solid arrangements from Phillip Keverin. They are full sounding without being finger busters. The print quality is good also - big enough for my weak eyes and nice, sharp print so one can easily distinguish the notes and recognize the chord clusters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Decent Biography of Andrew Lloyd Webber
I originally got this book, back in 96, and I loved it! But when the old copy got worn out, I couldn't find another (because it went out of print for a short time). Fortunately I found another copy. Its an amazing book, with some accurate material on the composer, the shows, and the people who worked with him. The pictures from the shows are gorgeous! And its worth for that alone. Some of the pictures are very rare too, not seen anywhere else. :) A great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars great pictures, adequate text
