Product Description

A multi-textual memoir chronicling the life of one of our most potent pop icons
Groundbreaking rock musician. Award-winning actress. Perceptive songwriter and author. Mother. Wife of a rock god. Fashionista and trendsetter. Provocateur. In each and every one of these roles Courtney Love has demonstrated a wholehearted commitment to her art, and an intense drive and a lust for life that have made her a star and a celebrity icon—but have also led her into some unwise, uncharted, and even dangerous territory. Simultaneously candid and enigmatic, Love has a mordant wit and vivid intelligence matched in intensity only by the extraordinary life she has led, from a bleak early childhood through great fame and terrible heartbreak to the present day. By turns exhilarating and unsettling, this is a story told for the first time in Dirty Blonde.

Composed of an astonishing and eclectic collection of deeply personal artifacts including personal letters, childhood records, poetry, diary entries, song lyrics, fanzines, show flyers, other original writings, and never-before-seen photographs, Dirty Blonde leads us through the unimaginable highs and the despairing lows of one of the most compelling and creative figures in the world of popular culture. Through these diaries we see Love’s accomplishments, her mistakes, her history, and her bright future in a whole new light. From her upbringing in Oregon through her years living in Japan, New Zealand, and London, from her career highs with Hole and as a Hollywood leading lady to her personal heartbreak and struggle, Dirty Blonde is Love laid bare—a wholly fascinating portrait of a fierce and insightful woman with an unblinking worldview and a determination to express herself no matter the cost.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not such a great book
I've always been a Courtney Love/ Kurt Cobain fan and looked forward to this book. I was VERY disappointed with it. It's supposed to be made like a "scrapbook" and there are handwritten notes, etc. throughout the book which would be nice if Courtney's handwriting were legible. It's terribly messy and the book is put together badly too. Everything is scattered, nothing is in order, pictures and notes are upside down, sideways, etc. having to turn the book every which way just to see things. Nothing makes sense in this book and she even says she didn't see the reason for doing the book at all. A BIG disappointment! :-(

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This book is absolutely amazing. Very good design, editing....You don't get tired of reading it , watching it, stare at it. Very entertaining. The book is pretty big, I though it was smaller. Love the pictures, notes, poems, songs, letters, documents...

Amazing. ***** 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars It's awesome.
The book is absolutely great and I received it with no problem.
Courtney Love is a rock goddess and with this book you can follow her life from a young age to the Hole era.
You can really get inside Courtney's head and looks at life through her eyes. The poems and songs are beautiful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mystique
Is there any celebrity who provokes such polarizing reactions as Courtney Love? I, for one, am a fan, of both her work (as a musician and an actress) and of her persona. She's an enigma ... constantly defying expectations, contradicting herself, self-destructing and then rising from the ashes.

As for this book ... as the Amazon review says, it's not really a diary as much as it is a scrapbook. And although the (excellent) graphic design of the book makes it look as if its content were pieced together with tape and scissors and glue, it's really a meticulously gathered collection of carefully chosen mementos that chronicle Courtney's life.

After reading the book, my opinion of Courtney really hasn't changed so much. I've always thought of her as a sensitive, wounded, intelligent, ambitious, needy and occasionally vicious woman, and all that is evident here. As is her inability to decide whether or not she wants to be a frightening outcast or a high-society fashionista.

If you're a fan, this book is probably worth buying. But instead of offering many answers, it only really contributes to Courtney's mystique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book for all fan's of Hole & Courtney Love!!!!!!
This is with a doubt, one of the coolest Coffee Table books out there.
It's a pick-up Guilty Pleasure type of book. The notes/poems in her hand writing is very cool. To see her personal thoughts through her eyes is a Bonus! Allot of pics most fan's never seen. Just a all-around awesome book that isn't super long and drawn out. You walk away with a sense you've seen the Brilliance and the madness of this Under-Rated Talent!

I Highly recommend this book to all Rock fans.

Product Description

Courtney Love. The girl with the most cake. The girl with the loudest mouth and the fiercest guitar. The girl of many talents -- not least among them the power to shock. Not since Madonna declared that she was like a virgin has someone in the public spotlight so consistently challenged the notion of what it means to be female -- and what it means to be well behaved. In Courtney Love: The Real Story, Poppy Z. Brite tells the whole truth about the lead singer of the band Hole and uncovers more about this pop culture heroine than any music magazine could ever hope to.

Replete with revealing details and photographs, information from Love's inner circle, and excerpts from Love's diaries and letters, this book has the intimacy of secrets told to a friend and delivers revelation after revelation. With equal parts compassion and black humor, Brite chronicles the turbulent lives of Love and introduces us to Love Michelle Harrison, the troubled girl who would be queen of postpunk rock, and her childhood spent shuttled from reform school to former stepfathers to family friends. As a precocious, flamboyant teenager, she hung around backstage after concerts, soaking up the star power she knew she had to possess one day, and then traveled to Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong to work as a stripper. Brite also takes us to new-wave Liverpool and to that citadel of grunge, Seattle, to see Courtney come of age in the circus that became alternative music, dishing much along the way about some of the biggest stars of that show from past and present.

Brite also sets the story straight about Love's life with Kurt Cobain; the allegations of her drug use that surrounded the birth of their daughter, Frances Bean; and the wreckage of Cobain's suicide. But what emerges out of all the drama is a woman determined not only to survive, but to succeed more than anyone ever expected. As seen from her stunning performance as the wife of the publisher of Hustler magazine in The People vs. Larry Flynt, and her transformation into a runway acolyte, she just may catapult herself out of the mosh pit and into the mainstream.

Only Poppy Z. Brite, the acclaimed author of literary horror fiction, whom Publishers Weekly called "a singularly talented chronicler of her generation," could have written this outrageous, comic, and ultimately moving tale of ferocious femininity and fishnet stockings. Courtney Love: The Real Story is a no-holds-barred biography that is as raw as a three-chord punk song -- a work that is as uncompromising and as unforgettable as its subject.Amazon.com Review
Poppy Z. Brite, better known for her punk-gothic horror anddreadful taste in clothing (the jacket photo shows her looking like areject from a 1985 audition for a Cure video) here gets her hands onsomething much scarier than club-hopping vampires: the life ofCourtney Love. Born Love Michelle Harrison, Courtney's childhoodcombines the worst of doped-up hippie parenting with her innate autismto produce a life that could only lead to rock-and-rollstardom. Starting with her first acid trip at age 4, administered byher father, a paragon of parental responsibility, Courtney went on tofour name changes, two years in juvenile detention, a trip to Japancourtesy of a white slave ring, living with gloom rockers inLiverpool, and a melange of drugs and sexual experiments all prior toleaving her teens. This makes for quite the page-turner--in a guiltysort of way and in spite of Poppy Z.'s occasionally cutesy-teen prose:"Courtney Love has always been surrounded by chaos, triumph, pain, and glamour." Still, in spite of the taboo of readingcelebrity bios, this one stands out because of the truly odd and, perhaps, innovative life of its subject. Not simply a rock-and-rollmusical bedrooms romp, Love's life is far enough out of themainstream, or even the alternate streams, to offer challenges to manyof the values we take for granted in living our lives. Things such assafety, stability, and even hygiene are thrown out the window in alife that reads like the outsider fiction of Hesse or Kerouac, onlywith more electric guitars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars insightful
I needed this book for a report on Courtney Love. This book was helpful in filling in gaps about her childhood and what her life was like as a teenager/young adult. It's pretty well written, I read the whole thing in 2 days along with all my other course work. It was written a few years ago so it's not very current. There isn't a whole lot of focus on music, which is what my paper was about, but that's ok. If you just want to know more about the girl this is a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not Unauthorized
For a woman who claimed she would never have an authorized bio in her house, Courtney certainly seems intent on never allowing anything short of a very edited version of her own life to surface (not that I blame her). For the record, I loved Courtney back in the 90's before she became the fashion freak and Hollywood gadfly. Her music was powerful as was her message that young women should make their own music rather than become groupie trash. For that alone she should be put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, as quickly as she could, she traded in her empowered feminist personna, began to starve, had massive plastic surgery, and abandonned her fans. Sad but true. Now on to the book. If you believe this author, Courtney was basically a modern day female Tom Sawyer. She has rotten parents (reading her mum's autobio might make you think differently), people try to use and abuse her, but Gosh darn it, that Courtney always rises again! One implausible story is how when Courtney was a teen stripping in Japan the owners of the club try to force her into prostitution. Not only does Courtney manage to stay a virgin (if you believe that one, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you), but she also tricks a guy into buying her a fur coat by only using her wit! Sorry, not buying. I liked Rossi's bio better, though it has problems as well. Since Rossi only can get second hand info on Courtney, obviously many to whom she had spoken had an ax to grind. Also, Rossi's own attitude often seems that of a high school journalist who wants so badly to be part of the "cool crowd" and when they reject her, she writes scathing articles about them. Rossi offers a better overview of Love's younger life while Brite (who had the benefit of Courtney's insight into her own life) writes more indepth about Love's years as a member of Hole and as Cobain's wife and widow. Really, you have to read them both to remotely get an idea of who Courtney is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't even get Courtney's real name correct
Poppy Z. Brite asserts that Courtney was born Love Michelle Harrison. However, if you read another book, Her Mother's Daughter, written by Courtney's mother Linda Carroll, you see that Courtney's birth name was Courtney Michelle Harrison. If Poppy Z. Brite can't even get the name of her subject correct, I question the overall accuracy of other facts in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brite 'vs' Rossi
I read this biography after reading "Courtney Love: Queen of Noise" by Melissa Rossi. Both definitely have their flaws and strong points. Each contributes different facts and stories, so if you read both you get a pretty complete picture of Courtney Love's life.

BRITE:

Very easy to follow, but kind of feels like an overview. I wish she would have gone into more depth on some issues. Also Poppy Brite desperately needs an EDITOR! The mistakes don't really affect the story, but they certainly don't give the reader much faith in her abilities. Lots of color pictures and an extensive bibliography.

ROSSI:

This biography gives much more detail and depth into Courtney's life. The writing style is a bit haphazard and choppy, but is still understandable and more interesting than Brite's. The one main fault against Melissa Rossi is that she doesn't cite any of her sources which leads you to wonder where she got her information. She does admit that she never interviewed Courtney and this was "unauthorized."

Neither book is really above the other and both books are entertaining reads for a cheap price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poppy should never write again..
I'm an avid fan of Courtney Love. I think she's wonderful and regardless of what this book did to her, I'll always be a fan.

However, Poppy Z. Brite is seriously the worst writer I've ever encountered in my life. She destroyed my interest in Love's story by sounding more like a gushing teen than someone who knew what the hell she was doing. ... Read more

Product Description

The daughter of esteemed writer Paula Fox and the mother of Courtney Love relates “the curse of the first-born daughter” that has haunted four generations of her family

As an adopted child, Linda Carroll created a magical world of her own, made up of dramatic adventures and the abiding fantasy that her real mother would come and take her away. When she finds herself pregnant at the age of eighteen, she is determined to have the perfect understanding with her child that she lacked with her adoptive mother. But readers will know better, for that baby grows up to be Courtney Love, desperately attention-seeking, deeply troubled, and one of the most talented women in rock.
Even as a baby, Courtney is beset by mood swings that no doctor can explain or cure. Her dark moods and paranoia escalate as she grows up, driving mother and daughter apart. When Courtney has a daughter of her own, Linda finally decides to find her own biological mother, and end the estrangement of generations of first-born daughters.
Her Mother’s Daughter is Linda Carroll’s story of self-discovery as an adopted daughter, a childlike hippie mother, and a woman determined to find herself before finding her roots. Set apart from the typical celebrity memoir by Carroll’s gifted storytelling, Her Mother’s Daughter gives a fresh perspective on the elusive yet enduring connections between mothers and daughters, and reveals the true history of the wildly confabulatory Courtney Love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Her Mother's Daughter
This was an interesting book if you are a fan or curious about Courtney Love. Her mother had an offbeat life, and it is really her story. Entertaining but only a must read if you like Courtney

1-0 out of 5 stars This is as horrible of a book as she is a mother
Can I just say that I'm disgusted that this book evens exist. I think it is completely ridiculous that she found the need to write a book justifying her being a bad mother. This book is poorly written and quite frankly sad. It breaks my heart to think about what Courtney Love was put through as a child by her parents. And if you are looking for a good book on her check out Queen OF Noise or Courtney Love : The untold story. But this book? It's a waste of time and money. It wouldn'tbe so bad if she knew how to write or tell a story. But she spends the whole time making excuses for bad parenting instead of owning it. Don't waste your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book club selection
My books club cloose "Her Mother's Daughter" for our April meeting and we were so into Linda Carroll's story that we had to meet the following week to finish our discussion. Mothers and daughters, relationships with men, finding yourself, finding what spiritual means, friendships, mental illness, death, birth, accepting life's bumps with grace laughter and compassion and going back after 30 years to find your first love, forgiveness, and lots of Catholic craziness of the 50's...this book has it all. Her descriptions of San Francisco are astounding and meaningful, ( I have lived here for 15 years)..I could imagine perfectly sitting at The Green Valley Resturant or Alioto's market at Fishermens Wharf. So is the way she describes having attention deficit disorder,"Fidget and Squirm were like an angry couple that lived in my body. Their constant warring made it impossible for me to sit still." I look at my students who struggle the same problem through new eyes. Its a fantastic book, colorful, intimate, honest, and thoughtful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
I loved this book, I devoured it in a weekend. It was interesting to learn more about Courtney Love that explained why she acts so insane at times. But I really fell in love with her mom's story.I could completely identify with the victimizing kind of family life she grew up in.She is painfully honest and very insightful.

3-0 out of 5 stars exactly what you think it is
neither terrible, nor great, nor particularly insightful in any way, this is just exactly what you think it is: the backstage ramblings of several musicians during the '95 lollapalooza festival.

3-0 out of 5 stars frustrating
the title/idea for this book seemed like it would be really interesting to read, but instead consisted of endless rants from either thurston moore or lee renaldo whining about 'corporate radio' or 'mtv' while praising the mighty mighty bosstones (on the same tour lineup) who are clearly a generic, terrible corporate ska band to begin with! i thought this book would be some kind of 'real' insight to bands on the road, instead of 'we ate mexican food, mtv wont play our videos, its hot, if you're not from new york, you're a hick' etc etc etc...i like hole, yet courtney love can get on my nerves...but i was amazed to find her 'accounts' in this book to be the most interesting, but also the most honest...beck's writing was a tad more interesting than sonic youth, but either he really was having a bad time on the tour (crowds throwing stuff at him, booing, etc) or he just wasnt into the whole online diary thing...its hilarious how sonic youth constantly got across their idea that the lollapallooza lineup they were a part of was more 'cultured' and the previous ones were just marketed angst bands...sonic youth were not widely loved by the masses because they are not easy to like...they make terrible videos, kim gordon absolutely CAN NOT sing for her life, and they look down upon anyone who actually wants any form of success...i'd rather not have to worry about my medical bills, and play for a million people, than wear thrift store clothes, starve and play for a bunch of patti smith loving bohemian geeks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for fans of SY and Beck
Here is a low priced little book with lots of journal entries from Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, quite a few from Beck and a couple others (but the others don't contribute too much). It is a very interesting inside look at one of the most vividly remembered tours in independent rock history.A lineup featuring the likes of these many performers will probably never cross the U.S. again in my lifetime. The Kathleen Hanna incident doesn't actually dominate Thurston's entries, but takes up a large chunk of his journals.Beck's entries are great.David Yow doesn't say too much...One overriding theme is how big of a jerk Courtney Love really is.There are plenty of little interesting stories relayed along the way.Don't miss out you Sonic Youth and Beck fans! And for all those who still remember being at one of these shows, it might be interesting to hear what was going on behind the scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars losersnoozerboozer?
In 1995, the Lollapalooza maelstron plundered thru the cities & towns of America, a [diamond] sea of noise & beats changing lives & generally having fun. That's what I'm lead to believe anyway. Thurston ismore or less the star here as he was in 1991: the Year Punk Broke, &there's some other cool & crazy kids there too. He writes in histypically amusing & insightful style about the Mexican food, thebackstage parking that's reserved strictly for Hole & how Kim has topretend to be Courtney so SY's car can get in, & how Bek was outragedby this, the Kathleen vs Courtney thing, the crowds disappearing when SYare last on the bill, etc. Lee Ranaldo also writes from the sonicperspective, of course in his more contemplative style usually except whenhe gets pissed off he shows it. Well, to be honest, I've read these thingsas they were intended, as computer things so I didn't get everything, I'dvery much like to hear what the great Beck had to say about it as well.Yeah the show goes on eevry year but that was the one that mattered. Veryinteresting reading that you can go back to many times forenlightenment/amusement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's Stephen?
Lots of Thurston, Mike Watt & Lee Renaldo, some David Yow, only one entry from Courtney and none from Stephen Malkmus, so the title is a little misleading. If you're a Beck fan, you'll love his entries. They're the best of the bunch. He describes the world as he sees it in Beck-style free-form, without bashing his fellow performers. Thurston's entries are almost entirely in strangely self-righteous defense of Kathleen Hanna and an incident in which he was not even involved, which is a waste. The last I heard, Kathleen is more than capable of speaking for herself so his defense of her/bashing of Courtney is unnecessary. I expected and would have preferred more insight into the Lollapalooza performing experience. ... Read more

Product Description

"I am not a woman. I'm a force of nature."

Courtney Love knows exactly what she is. She created herself: demon diva, goddess of grunge, media super-icon, wife of the late rock megastar Kurt Cobain. Lead singer of the band Hole, her persona is larger than life -- bellowing, ranting, riling up the masses. She was made for the spotlight, and she rules it like a dark angel, her on- and offstage presence seething with such power, venom, and raw sexual fury that she obliterates everyone else on the music scene today.

"I want to be the girl with the most cake."

Courtney Love may have achieved her goal of becoming a self-made celebrity, but her hungry climb to fame wasn't easy. It took her from a troubled childhood to the sleazy underworld of strip joints to the hardcore drug scene. She was institutionalized as a juvenile delinquent, tormented as a rock groupie, and driven to near suicide as a grieving widow. Then there was her tumultuous relationship with Kurt Cobain -- a sweet-and-sour marriage of twisted passion that ended tragically with a shotgun blast.

Here at last the true Courtney Love is revealed...the headstrong hellraiser in a baby-doll dress...the raucous performer ripping up the airwaves, at war with her public image and herself...the unstoppable survivor forever rising from the ashes only to burn more brightly.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I was there
Pretty interesting reading the reviews. I was there at the time this was written. Rozz told his story to Melissa, in thoughts of co-writing the book. Melissa took notes from Rozz, then he must have pissed her off, she published the book without him. The writing is VERY clumsy, but it kind of gives it a Quentin Tarintino feel. It does describe an interesting time in Portland and rock history

3-0 out of 5 stars Rossi 'vs' Brite
I read this biography first and then "Courtney Love:The Real Story" by Poppy Z. Brite. Both definitely have their flaws and strong points. Each contributes different facts and stories, so if you read both you get a pretty complete picture of Courtney Love's life.

This biography gives much more detail and depth into Courtney's life. The writing style is a bit haphazard and choppy, but is still understandable and more interesting than Brite's.The one main fault against Melissa Rossi is that she doesn't cite any of her sources which leads you to wonder where she got her information. She does admit that she never interviewed Courtney and this was "unauthorized."

2-0 out of 5 stars What can you say?
OK, so this "most" unauthorized bio on Mrs. Love-Cobain, falls under the "mediocre" category. For several reasons, the first being that author Melissa Rossi cannot write. The whole flow of the book feels uneven and choppy even though it's mainly written in chronological order. While you have a good phrase every once in a while, you also have sentences that leave you wondering if she's just graduated high school. She chops it up and throws in uneccessary facts about herself and unimportant characters in the story. She seems to know a few big words that are thrown in there, but then the rest is bland and unbearably simple. It feels as though she wrote it, and then went back and revised with a thesaurus. And then there's her "sources". These are somewhat a mystery at times, and alot of it seems to rely on Love's former flame, Rozz Rezabek. And the whole thing reads like a bad history book, just relaying events and quotes while throwing in the occasional "insight" which repeats itself over and over and over(she's messes up but she always comes back to fix it, wow what a resilient gal she must be). The strongest point of the bio is the basic outline of her life and the photos. So if that's all you're looking for, here it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic book
this book is fantastic. whenever i put it down, it was by force. melissa rossi did a great job writing it, telling itlike it is, showing the good and bad sides of everything, and its a great read. <3

1-0 out of 5 stars What a horrible collection of gossip. . .
The author claims to have respect for Courtney's achievements, but every page of this book drips with scorn. At one point she wastes an entire page reviewing Ms. Love's appearance in a derogatory manner, only to report on Ms. Love's plastic surgery later in the book with even more scorn. Lady, make up your mind.

At the beginning of the book she reports on her one-time co-author's scheming to make money off of Courtney's private thoughts, and then later describes said co-author's relationship with Courtney purely from his point of view, despite the fact that he is willing to say or do anything for the sake of publicity.

The good parts: Nothing, really. Read the book by Poppy Z. Brite, if you want good. ... Read more

Though some of the information in this book was incorrect, I loved the pics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Totally unresearched but reallly good pictures.
Nick Wise obviously did no research for this book.He got the wrong year of her birthdate, and he spelled one of her last names wrong. It was totally lame. The only reason it gets any stars is because the picturesare beautiful and it's Courtney at her best.

5-0 out of 5 stars nicely done, classy
this is a beautiful book. it gave me real lessons from real stories about not just love and relationships, but about working on yourself first to get you there. it's a cliche kind of title, but the content has a lot more. it was really brave of them to talk about all that they did, but i gather that it's really their amazing determination for a better, more happier life that makes them confront so many demons. much props and gratitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Love Story I'll Always Remember!
This is a book I didn't want to put down! The choppy writing worked `like' magic. In addition to gaining a vibrant understanding of film industry realities... the chop-chop getting straight to the point brought both Angela and Courtney off otherwise plain recycled paper, giving them center stage to the best real-life audition of themselves to be seen. Loved every minute of it, too!!!

Angela, just as expected, is pragmatic, FUN, sassy but classy... the kind of woman I applaud 100%!!! And Courtney also was just as expected. Sensitive with issues that worked wonders for him on stage. Both of their personalities worked like magnets in bringing them together.

What seals the love part of their story however, was when Angela was going on and on running her mouth, and Courtney was just sitting back trying to listen as he's also asking her to hold it down. Just too cute; especially when she couldn't `hold it down' and him sitting there thinking, `what do I have here!?!'... YET realizing this was the woman he wanted to marry! ...Exactly how true love works... `being yourself' and letting the chemistry (if it's present, which in their case it was), go thru its natural process.

There is far too much to comment on here. All-in-all I think the August Wilson plays stood out for me most. Something about that time period in their lives & being on Broadway... dealing with the emotional factors of learning the business, and learning more about themselves (respectively) ... that really captivated me.

This is a love story I'll always treasure and remember! Over the Top! Five Stars!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years.
This book gave me such insight on life and love that I can honestly say that after reading it I look at both differently. These two people love each other and were actually being prepared for each other long before they realized it! Amazing!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Angela and Courtney
A journey to love that readers familiar with this Hollywood couple will likely enjoy. The couple takes turns narrating their lives from childhood to adulthood - from college at Yale to the New York theatre to the Los Angeles Hollywood scene. We read about their romantic relationships. We read about addictions and issues with their parents. We read about their own struggle to become parents. The book wraps with Angela and Courtney's views/tips on becoming a better you/strengthening and maintaining your relationships.Readers are sure to come away from this with a greater respect for this couple's views on life and love.

Product Description
Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane has always stood at the intersection of fashion, art and music. Over the past 10 years, his slick, sexy designs and signature cut have revolutionized menswear. Several bodies of his photographic work--2005's London Birth of a Cult and his ongoing "Rock Diary" series for V magazine--have documented underground rock culture at its loudest and most extreme. In this latest project, Slimane teams up with the editors of Visionaire and V to deliver Portrait of a Performer, an exclusive photojournal devoted to the provocative musician and muse, Courtney Love. Shot in New York in August of 2006, just before the release of Love's latest record, the intimate black-and-white studies capture the American pop icon, semi-nude, just before her return to the Billboard charts--defiant, mesmerizing, flawed and vulnerable. Portrait of a Performer documents a highly charged encounter between two creative forces who have influenced rock and fashion, each on their own terms. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars little disappointment
I just received my copy of Portrait of a Performer.
It is a slim elegant bookzine containing just around 20 pictures of Courtney Love (you can see all them on Slimane's website).
The print quality is really low, and the paper quality too.
to avoid if you are looking for a well done book of photographies.
On the other hand a must for every Hedi fanatic (as everything he does).

Definitly not the best work by mr. Slimane.
Despite being a limited edition of 2500 copies I guess it will never reach the price of a
Masterpiece as London Birth of a Cult. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Princess Ai Manga Collection!
This edition is somewhat equivalent to the separate three volumes, but there are a few differences. In the Ultimate Edition, there's an additional color page & the paper doll Princess Ai page in it is a bit smaller than the one printed in one of the three separate volumes. Also, the cover page is absolutely gorgeous, so if you're a major Princess Ai fan, this is a perfect add to your collection [[or a perfect start to a collection]]! I purchased it from goHastings for a cheaper price because it was used [[appx. $6]] so you might also want to consider doing the same if you want a great bargain.

Product Description

How do people practice religion in their everyday lives? How do our daily encounters with people who hold different religious beliefs shape the way we understand our own moral and spiritual selves? In Heaven's Kitchen, Courtney Bender takes a highly original approach to answering these questions. For more than a year she worked in New York City as a volunteer for a nonprofit, nonreligious organization called God's Love We Deliver, helping to prepare home-cooked meals for people with AIDS. Paying close attention to what was said and not said, Bender traces how the volunteers gave voice to their moral positions and religious values. She also examines how they invested their conversations, and mundane activities such as cooking, with personal meaning that in turn affected how they saw their own spiritual lives. Filled with vibrant storytelling and rich theoretical insights, Heaven's Kitchen shows faith as a living practice, reshaping our understanding of the role of religion in contemporary American life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Study
What a wonderful book. Nicely written; thoughtful; and insightful. Professor Bender of Columbia University spent months observing the actions, conversations, and ideas of volunteers and workers at God's Love We Deliver in New York. What she found abounded in ironies about religion and spirituality in the everyday lives of people. Dr. Bender found that an organization with "God" in the title actually had very little overt conversation about God; Dr. Bender found that volunteers brought spiritual feelings to their work, often in the silences and quiet times of the labor. This is a fabulous book about religion in everyday life and how people make sense of their spiritual lives in various means. Recommended for all scholars of religion in America and for those interested in spirituality and volunteer organizations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Open communication=key to problem resolutions!
I found this book to be significant to the very real issues of relationships in the African-American community and ANYONE else, male or female who chooses to gain such insight. Being very interested in finding resolutions and understandings in 'relationships', I found the sharing to be candid, frank, and out-spoken--regardless of the ways it was said.A person sitting next to you, on a bus or train, is still a part of our collective society, whether they are "ghetto" or not!Real people, all people, should be striving to know the "what/why is this happening?" thing, because it is all affective.I appreciated the first-hand perceptions and cared less if the words were written 'eloquently' or in the proper "English".Some people have gone out of their way to bash this book, while I think it is quite brave--and much needed! If only African-American women and men noted the words of this book AND acted upon that knowledge, maybe our lives could be much better. If you recieved no "wisdom" from it the first read, try reading it again with a different expectation.(I am a 52, single-mother, never-married African American woman.Wise and experienced in relationships, I say READ THIS BOOK! Better late than never.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Unorganized
I liked this book, I suppose. But as a young woman i expected to read a book filled with wisdom I only know through time and experience. Although I found that in the book I felt a lot of the books view were way to cynical.I also found it to be unorganized. There should have been sections. Section 1, relationships, section 2, sex etc etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, It speaks the truth
I met the author of this book on a street in Hollywood, California years before this book was published. What struck me about Courtney long was his honesty. It's a trait that he must have used when selecting these stories of the trials and tribulations that African Amercian women must endure to find a mate. My only issue was the negative stances on interracial dating and marriage. It seems for some so desperate that there minds are open to only what is lying in front of them. Their viewpoints are sad, but it is the truth in our society and it is represented honestly and openly. Kudos Courtney!

5-0 out of 5 stars Honestly and Beautifully Written
This is a must read not only for African-American women, but for anyone who wants to connect on a human level. I was so proud to have read this book. Love Awaits, shares with us the personal thoughts, opinions and beliefs from a group of people who are seldom heard; African-American women. I laughed and cried with this book as women of all ages and walks of life told their stories authentically and vividly. One of the stories concerns a young woman speak of her rape and the aftermath and I am still deeply affected by the emotion of that story; although I read the book sometime ago. Pick this book up, I highly reccommend it, it will stay with you for a long time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too vulgar.
Couldn't get through the book because of all the filthy language. Most of the girls in the book talked like they were straight up ghetto. I also felt kind of bad that I didn't get through the book because somebody gave it tome as a gift. But what was good about the book was how the girls talkedabout real life and what they want from a man. ... Read more

Product Description

When we first started down the baby-making path, we thought we'd be pregnant in no time. We'd just toss out our birth control pills and before we knew it, we'd be rocking our little one to sleep. Little did we know what was in store for us, or the energy it would take to face all of the crazy, unpredictable and (sometimes) irrational emotions we felt along the way. Neither did our husbands. Sound familiar?

  • If your idea of foreplay is screaming, "I'm ovulating; it's time!!!" to your oblivious husband...
  • If your ovulation schedule is ruling your life and every trip to the drug store includes a bulk purchase of pregnancy sticks...
  • If you're running out of answers to the chronic questioning from the pregnancy paparazzi about your plans for parenthood ...

Then this is the book for you. Whether it's been three months or three years since you've been trying, the more complicated and overwhelming the process becomes.

The Conception Chronicles shares candid humor, hold-nothing-back banter and practical advice on everything that goes along with trying to start a family: from dealing with your fertile friends to the battery of tests you may have to face; from surviving "sex on demand" to navigating the ins and outs of high-tech fertility treatments. This book will guide you through the emotional journey to motherhood, offering compassion and laughter like only your best girlfriends can. And we promise you'll never hear us say, "Relax and you'll be pregnant in no time."

2-0 out of 5 stars Conception Chronicles
I got this book because I thought it would help me conceive after Birth Control. I read until the middle of the book and flat out gave up. I didn't appreciate how the women wrote like the whole process was pretty much a joke and right in the middle of it they start talking about infertility until almost the end of the book. I took their advice and dumped it for "Taking Charge of your Fertility".

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing, GREAT humor, and very informative!
I am almost done reading this book. I couldn't put it down! It is VERY informative and the humor they use throughout the book is great... especially for such a stressfull subject. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone. It's helped me relax a little and even laugh!

4-0 out of 5 stars Informational
I enjoyed this book as it talked about what the couples went through during their journey toward conception. I wish there was more about the journey before utilizing expensive fertility drugs and underoing IVF. However, great websites and places to obtain more information about trying to conceive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am so glad I bought this book! Trying to get pregnant has turned into such a serious and hard experience for me and this book has helped me to remember my sense of humor. There were some issues discussed in this book that I realated to so much, and they seem so intense as i experience them, but as I read about the authors stories it was absolutely hilarious! Like obsessing over the ovulation strips! If you're having a hard time conceiving you will definitely relate to this book and enjoy it!
