Product Description
On playing fields and street corners, in backyards and gyms, the people in this arresting array of pictures are unselfconsciously exploring the physical and emotional pleasures of competition and play. Each image offers an affirming and satisfying answer to the question at the heart of Game Face: What do girls and women look like when freed from traditional feminine constraints, using their bodies in joyful and empowering ways?

To show America what women’s sports looks like, Jane Gottesman searched through the work of our country’s best photographers, from the newest photojournalists to artists such as Annie Leibovitz and Ansel Adams. The result is a unique and inspiring document of the tremendous impact that the growth of female sports at all levels is having on society—and on women themselves.Amazon.com Review
A friend was looking for a great book for a young woman, to help ease her into adulthood. The usual fiction fare came to mind, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, To Kill a Mockingbird, and so on. Then I came across Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like? and immediately decided this was the perfect choice for a preteen girl. In fact, it's a great addition to your mother's coffee table, your best friend's bookshelf, and your sister's "girls rule" collection.

Created and edited by Jane Gottesman, and including a foreword from Penny Marshall, this book takes you on a romp through women in sports from the 19th to the 21st century. The pictures capture superstar athletes like Serena Williams and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, along with small-town sports victors like the determined young "tomboy on a skateboard." The photographs range from showing the agony of defeat to the gritty triumph of victory on the faces of women from all around the world. It's a truly magnificent display of woman power on the field and court, in the ring and stadium, and beyond. Definitely recommended for all the "girlz" in your life. --E. Brooke Gilbert ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect condition as promised
All of the books that I ordered (18) at a time were delivered in great condition and in a timely manner.Amazon.com separated the shipments to halep them arrive faster without extra postage which helped a lot.Thank you amazon.com!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book fell apart!
The book may be all of the things everyone says, but my copy has completely fallen apart. We did not abuse this book in any way, pages simply started falling out of it.It was poorly made.Amazon has refused to replace it since it purchased it over 30 days ago.Apparently, they do not stand behind faulty merchandise they sell.In any case, who wants a book where 1/2 the pages are falling out?I recommend that you do not purchase this, simply because it's poorly constructed. Or, buy it from a different retailer who will replace it if your copy starts to self destruct as mine did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows the true female athlete
I saw the exhibit of the photographs in this book at the Smithsonian a year and a half ago and I was captivated.I knew immediately that I wanted this book.As an athlete myself, I know what all the stages of sports really are and I connected with the emotions expressed in the litte stories throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially developing female athletes, because it is inspirational and exhilarating!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Game Face: What DoesA Female Athlete Look Like?
Great book for all ages.A lot of the pictures don't need stories to accompany them, they speak for themselves.Excellent book to read and also to give as a gift to any young up and coming athlete. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time...
I just finished this book, and I have to say that I thought it was completely thoughtless and off-track.Crown's portrayal of Marshall leaves something to be desired. The book comes off to me as a quick money-making scheme that's purpose is not to discover the "real" Penny Marshall, but to deliver some juicy gossip that will hopefully intrigue the reader.I found the book to be informative on behind-the-scenes Hollywood, as well as on television and film production, but overall it was a complete waste of my time.If you're looking for a personal account of Penny's life/experiences, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book1
Penny Marshall-is cool! I love her on Laverne & Shirley, which is my fave show & on Nick-@-Nite on Saturdays. I'm getting the book for Christmas. I like the other cast members of L&S: Cindy Williams, Michael McKean, David L. Lander, Betty Garrett, Phil Foster, & Eddie Mekka-along w/most of the guest stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Penny for your thoughts
Sure she has a famous brother who provided her a way in to showbiz, but who's to say that she wouldn't have made it herself? "We'll do it our way, and make all our dreams come true." She's certainly talentedenough. The cool thing about this book is that it's more than a biography. It's about television in the sixties and seventies, too, because Penny hadsome kind of connection with all the big shows through her brother Garry, her husband Rob Reiner, or any of her many famous friends. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
In the spirit of A Child Called "It" comes an amazing story of resilience from a woman who triumphed over child abuse, cancer, and alcoholism to become the founder of A Place Called Home.

"I began life, it would seem, as some kind of Grimm’s fairy tale creature, large and oafish, undesirable, grossly imperfect. Neatly penned in my baby book were the words, ‘Debbie was a fat, unattractive baby.’ Fat and ugly aside, my life was fairly normal for a couple of years. It would be a while before the abuse began. Before the smoking and pills, the rage and rebellion, the alcoholism and cancer, the broken marriages.

In those first uncomplicated years I could have set out on any of a dozen different paths toward an orderly life . . . it was not to be. . . . But this is not a story of defeat."

This is a book about surviving. It’s about hope. It’s about how each of us—ordinary, imperfect, damaged—can dream and heal. This book weaves the humorous, often outrageous, always courageous tapestry of Debrah Constance’s life. Voted Woman of the Year by the State of California Legislature for founding A Place Called Home (APCH), an organization providing services to at-risk inner-city kids in South Los Angeles, Debrah proves that anyone can rise above life’s obstacles and make a better life for themselves—and others. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fat Stupid Ugly
This book tells about her life and what she has been through. It was slow at times and didn't really keep my interest the whole way through the book. The end got more interesting since she talks about her experience with the children at APCH.I guess it depends on what you are looking for to read from this book. The story about her life cuts in and out and nothing goes into great detail. To me it was more like a list of things that happened to her and lacked details.Overall the book was an easy read and informational, but not that exciting to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible read
i felt this book was not only written horribly, but this woman just came across as immature and self centered, despite her horrible childhood. the entire time i was just annoyed by her. i felt that the whole book was just a bunch of reiterating and repeating. i DO NOT suggest this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Light Shines Brightly
As a psychologist, I am always astonished at what people can transcend.Debrah Constance's telling of her life story in her own words is witness to this fact.I found "Fat, Stupid, Ugly" extremely inspiring. It gave me pause. It gave me the opening for further introspection into my own life. The questions are always the same: Who am I? Where am I going? What am I doing? It seems to me to be truly awake, these questions must be posed time and time again. In my 61 years I have found this to be so.

"Fat, Stupid, Ugly" is a disturbing book that provokes us to think beyond the surface of our day-to-day lives.I thank Debrah for this book; it is a gift to all of us.She is remarkable. Our lives can be so difficult and some of us have dramatic and cataclysmic events befalling us.Debrah tells us about the major obstacles in her life and that the battle is worth it in the end.It brings us to our ultimate truths.Debrah's story reminds us that the work is never done, the job never quite complete. We are all on our way back home is how I see it.And on the way back we meet each other and hopefully shed a little light on the task at hand.Thank you, Debrah. The light shines brightly.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made me feel like I could accomplish anything
For most of us, good self-esteem and good self image drives us to do great things ... make more money, create a home for our family, be the best kind of person we can be, and do right in the world. But for Debrah Constance, not having any self-esteem and being labeled "Fat Stupid Ugly" pushed her to help a displaced community deal with life's hardest issues -- drug addictions, gang violence, single parenting, school drop outs, and death. Debrah is the founder of "A Place Called Home,"a South Central Los Angeles youth center that provides at risk children, ages nine to twenty, with a secure, positive family environment where they an regainhope and belief, earn trust and self-respect and learn skills to lead to a productive life. Debrah's memoir chronicles her life as an abused child who thought so little of herself she endured deep psychological and emotional problems, drug and drinking addictions and abusive relationships throughout her life. After a life long struggle with her poor self image, she found a way to change her pattens, get help for her drug/alcohol problems and give back to children who have lost hope. This is an amazing person. I found hope and direction for my own life after reading it. I hope I get an opportunity to meet her one day so I can thank her. Her story belongs on the Oprah show so that other people can learn that even when the most unfortunate situation occurs ... there is hope. Thank you Debrah!

4-0 out of 5 stars Important and Accessible
What an incredible story of turning one's life around and making a difference in the world.Deborah Constance's stamina and creativity are remarkable, as is her survival in the face of extraordinary life challenges. While it would have been good to learn more about Ms. Constance's underlying psychology, the straightforward writing style may be a reflection of her need to do rather than to analyze. This book is accessible to all readership levels (except, of course, children). ... Excerpt: A League of Their Own is a 1992 American comedy-drama film that tells a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). Directed by Penny Marshall, the film stars Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Lori Petty. The screenplay was written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel from a story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele. A television series based on the film aired on CBS in April 1993, with Garry Marshall, Megan Cavanagh, Tracy Reiner, and Jon Lovitz reprising their roles. It was quickly canceled. The film opens in 1988 with an elderly, widowed Dottie Hinson reluctantly attending the induction of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Dottie was once one of the league's greatest players but, although she loved baseball, she never really considered it a big part of her life. Upon her arrival at Cooperstown's Doubleday Field, Dottie is reunited with former teammates and friends. This prompts a flashback to how the league was started back in 1943. When World War II threatens to shut down Major League Baseball, candy manufacturing magnate Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall) decides to create a women's league to make money. Ira Lowenstein (David Strathairn) is put in charge of public relations and scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) is sent out to recruit players. Capadino likes what he sees in catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis). She is a terrific hitter and "kind of a dolly" likely to attract male fans. 5-0 out of 5 stars guide to motion lamps
This book is very nice as a coffee table book,to glance through, but it is also a very informative guide to collectors of motion lamps. Giving information about almost every motion lamp made, with lots of colorful pictures,it details what each lamp is like and is easy and enjoyable to read

5-0 out of 5 stars A+++ Reference Book...and fun to read!
I've used the Samuelian book countless times as a reference when purchasing lamps for my business. All lamps are easily located by company name, or subject of the lamp. Prices are accurate, information is A+++,care and repair section is outstanding, and the photos make for quick andeasy identification. I recommend this book to my customers and I can to youas well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an informative book on a long, overlooked subject!
My interest in Motion Lamps was aroused when I saw one in a movie several years ago. I searched in vain to find any information on what they were or where to find them. I finally came upon the Montgomery Book on Motion Lampswhich was a start; at least I knew what I was looking for. I took the bookaround to antique stores and flea markets only to hear "oh yeah, I hada few of those once but we don't see them to often." I live in the midwest region where it just seems that motion lampsare very elusive. With abit of looking through ads for collectables in magazines I was able to finda few people who knew about and sold these lamps. I was able to purchase afew lamps here and there, but I never realized just how many differentlamps existed, or what they looked like until this book was published. Itseems that there were just a small "cult" of serious collectorsand very little knowlege available to the "masses"; this bookchanges that. The text, pictures, and motion description of each lamp areexcellent. I think that experienced, knowlegable collectorsshould findthis book interesting; for the other 95% of the world, INCREDIBLE! I wouldlike to thank the authors for sharing their "secret" with therest of us,and for taking the time and effort obviously required to producethis book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Reviews of Collector's Guide to Motion Lamp
As the proud parents of the authors, we wanted to share reviews we have saved from recent publications. All are complete as released and unedited. They are below: From the Antique Trader, a leader in the field ofcollectibles publications: "They are fun, quirky, novel andcollectible; they are motion lamps and this book is a tribute and resourcethat novice and experienced lamp collectors will want to add to their ownlibraries. The authors focus on lamp scenes in motion caused by heat from alight bulb as opposed to motion created by a motor (the subject for anotherbook, they say). More than 500 colorful lamps are evaluated and discussed.Sam and Anna Samuelian also provide invaluable advice about maintaining, troubleshooting, collecting, and repairing these appealing lamps." From The Old Times: "We're familiar with the cylinder type motionlamps...who isn't? But we weren't aware of the many types unearthed by theSamuelians, collectors and purveyors of "motion sickness".Besides the rotating cylinders with waterfalls and smoky fires andsuch--the kind we remember from Grandma's house--there are flat"picture frame" lamps, little carousels, revolving Christmastrees, facsimiles of little fireplaces and campfires, pagodas and Christmasornaments that spin when lighted, psychedelic and op art brain-twisters,and a big variety of advertising gimickry. This survey is organized bymanufacturer, primarily, but there are separate sections on psychedelia andadvertising lamps. There's also a long chapter on repair and restoration, and even a chapter on making your own motion lamp. The photographs mostlydo justice to these colorful lamps, and make the book fun to browse. Sincethese lamps are getting awfully hard to find, this book will providecollectors a "fix" until the next one comes along. This is amuch-needed book for lighting buffs, since the last book on this subjectfrom L-W is now out of print."From AntiqueWeek: "Colorphotos are the emphasis of this book, making it useful as a picture priceguide. However, captions provide interesting details that go beyond justproviding a value. Readers will also find several pages of backgroundinformation on the topic."Finally, from Bookwatch:"Collectors of motion lamps will relish Sam and Anna Samuelian's"Collector's Guide to Motion Lamps", packed with color photos ofthe lamps and spiced with identification tips and current values. It's theclear, small photos which make the book so simple to use."Ifanyone out there can send us other reviews, we welcome them. Email us atarpsam@webtv.net. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional quality, exquisite photos, lots of information
This book is a must for collectors! Not only is this book fun to read but it is informative as well.As a collector of motion lamps myself, this book has proved over and over again to be an invaluable resource for bothmy collection and my business. The photography is exquisite and theinformation that is contained in this book is not available anywhere else.It is obvious that the Samuelians have expended an extraordinary effort inproducing this book and it sure shows!!!! This is a large sized book and isa real bargain. This would make a great gift for any collector, dealer, orjust a person who likes anything fun! Editorial Review

Product Description
Proserpine is a verse drama written for children by the English Romantic writers Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary wrote the blank verse drama and Percy contributed two lyric poems. Composed in 1820 while the Shelleys were living in Italy. It is often considered a partner to the Shelleys' play Midas.

The drama is based on Ovid's tale of the abduction of Proserpine by Pluto, which itself was based on the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone. Mary Shelley's version focuses on the female characters. In a largely feminist retelling from Ceres's point of view, Shelley emphasises the separation of mother and daughter and the strength offered by a community of women. Ceres represents life and love, and Pluto represents death and violence. The genres of the text also reflect gender debates of the time. Percy contributed in the lyric verse form traditionally dominated by men; Mary created a drama with elements common to early nineteenth-century women's writing: details of everyday life and empathetic dialogue.

Midas is a verse drama in blank verse by the Romantic writers Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary wrote the drama and Percy contributed two lyric poems to it. Written in 1820 while the Shelleys were living in Italy, Mary Shelley tried unsuccessfully to have the play published by children's magazines in England in the 1830s; however, it was not published until A. Koszul's 1922 scholarly edition. Whether or not the drama was ever meant to be staged is a point of debate among scholars. The play combines the stories of the musical contest between Apollo and Pan and that of King Midas and his ability to turn everything he touches to gold.

Largely concerned with gender issues, Midas comments on the definitions of femininity and masculinity in the early nineteenth century and the developing ideology of separate spheres which encouraged women to restrict themselves to domestic affairs and men to political affairs. Part of the Romantic interest in rewriting classical myths, Midas focuses on challenging patriarchy and satirizng the unbounded accumulation of wealth.
