Finally in paperback, here is James Baldwin's only collection of poems. Baldwin's language is deceptively simple--this poetry is easily understood. But the emotions behind the words go to the core not only of the poet's soul, but of America's. Readers will see Baldwin here in both a familiar and an altogether different light. ... Read more

Stagelee wonders how white folks think black folk make it and survive while they colonize, pillage, and plunder the rest of the world.Baldwin lays out with specificity, the "crimes" of the oppressor andwarns with wit, sarcasm, and passion, that we hold the secret and wisdom tothe world, as well as a promise of eternal life.He "prophecies"hell as the eventually resting place of the oppressor. Two other poetsthat seem to form a trilogy with "Stagerlee Wonders", are "Alover's Question", and "Song (for skip). 72. Running for President, 1976: The Carter campaign

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Look
Martin Schram gives us an insider's lok into the 1976 Carter campaign machine. Jimmy Carter is one of the more remarkable success stories among first-time candidates in the last 100 years. He was an unknown, and primarily won office for being the "anti-Nixon." He lacked charisma, however, and in the end only eked out a win against a quite vulnerable Gerald R. Ford. Carter had a tenacity and a core of loyal supporters who pushed their candidate's "outsider" image, and together this one-term ex-governor from the South became the first southern Democrat elected president since before the Civil War.

Oddly, though, the book makes absolutely no mention of Carter's first Officer of management and Budget, Bert Lance. Lance would resign in 1977 amid allegations of wrongdoing involving a Georgia bank, but he was later cleared of charges. Lance was one of Carter's closest campaign advisors in 1976 and it is bizarre that he fails to appear in this otherwise deeply detailed book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Inside Look
This is a gripping, revealing look at a Presidential campaign.Author Martin Schram brings us into the inner circle of Governor Carter and his advisors as they race for the White House.Readers enjoy a revealing look at Carter's winning primary campaign, and his imperfect effort in the Fall against President Gerald Ford.We see how the views and personalities of Carter and his top staffers (Hamilton Jordan, Jody Powell, Pat Cadell, Charles Kirbo, etc.) affected the campaign. We also get a brief but revealing look at President Ford's ¨Rose Garden¨strategy - hide in the White House and let your more accessible opponent take the media scrutiny.Carter came from nowhere to win the nomination, then saw his large-but-soft lead dwindle from his unclear message, misstatements, and the Rose Garden strategy of his opponent. The book also shows why both men made unstellar leaders; Ford wasn't quite bright enough, while the more cerebral Carter lacked personal skills and fortitude.

This book is a bit dated, yet remains a highly readable, well-recommended insider's view for political junkies and others.

Product Description

In a decade of constant crises, perhaps the most formidable challenge that Americans faced in the 1970s was the energy shortage. An era of inexpensive and seemingly unlimited supplies of oil came to an end with the OPEC oil embargo of 1973 and strained the nation's economy for the remainder of the decade. In his Â"Crisis of ConfidenceÂ" speech, one of the most remarkable political addresses in American history, President Jimmy Carter drew connections between America's increasing dependence on foreign oil and what he considered larger, more spiritual problems that plagued the nation. Through carefully selected documents that bring together the high-level White House decision-making process and the national conversation about energy, Daniel Horowitz helps students understand both the crises of the 1970s and the continuing relationship between American economic and foreign policy. An introduction by the editor, headnotes to documents, a chronology, questions for consideration, and a selected bibliography provide further pedagogical support.

The latestadaptation of the British TV show Crackers is a dark, bleak urban noir. Thecriminals gain more reader sympathy than the hero does, that will notsurprise fans of the series. The future looks even grimmer than thedisheartening present for everyone involved with the case. Anyone expectinga "happily ever after" needs to pass on this novel. However, those who enjoy the human condition at its slimy worse will go crackersover a novel that will prove to be a best buy.

Excerpt: James Francis Cagney, Jr. (July 17, 1899 March 30, 1986) was an American film actor. Although he won acclaim and major awards for a wide variety of roles, he is best remembered for playing "tough guys." In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him eighth among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time. In his first performing role, he danced dressed as a woman in the chorus line of the 1919 revue Every Sailor. He spent several years in vaudeville as a hoofer and comedian until his first major acting role in 1925. He secured several other roles, receiving good reviews before landing the lead in the 1929 play Penny Arcade. After rave reviews for his acting, Warners signed him for an initial $500 a week, three-week contract to reprise his role; this was quickly extended to a seven year contract. Cagney's seventh film, The Public Enemy, became one of the most influential gangster movies of the period. Notable for its famous grapefruit scene, the film thrust Cagney into the spotlight, making him one of Warners' and Hollywood's biggest stars. In 1938, he received his first Academy Award for Best Actor nomination for Angels with Dirty Faces, before winning in 1942 for his portrayal of George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy. He was nominated a third time in 1955 for Love Me or Leave Me. Cagney retired for 20 years in 1961, spending time on his farm befor...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16046 ... Read more

Excerpt: Paul Emerson Carlyle Ince (born 21 October 1967 in Ilford, Greater London) is an English football manager and a former professional player. He has managed Blackburn Rovers, Milton Keynes Dons (twice) and Macclesfield Town. As a player he won numerous honours with Manchester United, became the first black player to captain the England team and was also the first black Briton to manage a team in the highest tier of English football. His career saw him play for seven English clubs, including stints at Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as the Italian side, Internazionale. Ince grew up as a West Ham United supporter. He was spotted playing, aged 12, by West Ham manager John Lyall around the time that the club was in the Second Division and achieved a surprise FA Cup final triumph over Arsenal. He signed for the Hammers as a trainee, aged 14. Lyall helped Ince through troubled school times eventually signing him as a YTS trainee, on leaving school, in 1984. He is a product of the West Ham youth team and made his debut in English football on 30 November 1986 against Newcastle United in the First Division. He became a regular player in 1987-88, proving himself to have all-round qualities of pace, stamina, uncompromising tackling and good passing ability. He also packed a powerful shot, and was awarded with England under-21 honours to go with the youth caps he acquired as an apprentice. He firmly established himself as the successor in West Ham's midfield for the veteran Billy Bonds, who retired at the end of the 1987-88 season. Unfortunately for Ince, West Ham were not enjoying one of their best spells when he bro...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1332660 ... Read more

National team caps and goals correctas of 3 March 2006.* Appearances (Goals) Cornelius Joseph Martin (born Rush, Dublin, 20 March 1923), commonly referred to as Con Martin, is a former Irish footballer. Martin initially played Gaelic football with Dublin before switching codes and embarking on a successful soccer career, playing for, among others, Drumcondra, Glentoran, Leeds United and Aston Villa. Martin was also a dual international and played and captained both Ireland teams - the FAI XI and the IFA XI. In 1949 he was a member of the FAI XI that defeated England 20 at Goodison Park, becoming the first non-UK team to beat England at home. Martin, nicknamed Mr. Versatility, played in nearly every position during his soccer career. Although he played mainly as a centre-half, the ball-handling skills he developed playing Gaelic football also made him a very useful goalkeeper. He actually made his international debut with the FAI XI as a goalkeeper and despite turning down the chance to sign for Manchester United as a goalkeeper, he later played nearly a whole season in goal for Aston Villa. Martin played Gaelic football in his youth and was called into the Dublin senior panel aged just 18. On 9 November 1941 he helped Dublin win the Leinster title, partnering Joe Fitzgerald of Geraldines in midfield in the final against Carlow.
