5-0 out of 5 stars Sexy Erotica Read
This anthology of erotic stories is a hot selection by Author Monica S. Martinez. The back cover states it will "take you on a journey of steamy sexcapades" and I'm sure it will be an enjoyable trip. I had a chance to meet the author at the C&B Queens Book Fair in September 2009. She a friendly latina who definitely knows how to tease and please when it comes to writing erotica. Buy this book for those cold winter months, when you want to spend a night curled up with a good book. It may be cold outside but after reading this you will no doubt be hot to the point where you're taking it all off...literally. ... Read more

Product Description
Offering the first comprehensive English translation of the non-biblicalQumran scrolls, The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated presents the largestcollection of Qumran texts ever published in this language. Two-hundred of thetotal 625 manuscripts discovered can be found in this volume. (Thosemanuscripts omitted are either in such a fragmentary condition thattranslation would be meaningless, or are sufficiently modest in size thattranslation of them would add very little.) Thanks to the officialpublication, in 1993, of all the photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls (TheDead Sea Scrolls on Microfiche by E.J. Brill, Leiden and the IsraelAntiquity Authority), it is now possible for the public to enjoy the samematerial available to the specialists. The 200 Dead Sea Scrolls translated here are a marked increase on the 62previously published in the third edition of Geza Vermez's The Dead SeaScrolls in English. This increase is mainly possible due to the introductionof the fascinating `new' texts, some of which, for example 4QMMT, are stillawaiting official publication. The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated comprises an extensive preface outliningthe origin of the manuscripts and the aims of the translation. This isfollowed by an introduction offering a survey of the discoveries and theirpublication, a brief sketch of the characteristics of the Qumran library, andseveral interesting remarks on the sect's identity, origins and history. Thetranslation of the manuscripts is organized into nine chapters, each with oneor two pages of introduction. It concludes with an exhaustive list of allmanuscripts discovered at Qumran. This list has a double function. Firstly, itprovides the reader with accurate information of all the existing texts, biblical and non-biblical, published an not yet published. Secondly, it offersbasic bibliographical references for the textual editions already availableand for the publications which provide information on the texts not yetpublished. This list is a very useful reference tool and forms a scientificpublication in its own right.Originally published in Spanish (1992) the present authorized translation hasbeen prepared by Wilfred G.E. Watson of the University of Newcastle, arenowned scholar of Biblical Hebrew poetry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated: The Qumran Texts in English (Paperback) by F. Garcia Martinez
Due to its superior alphanumeric notational system "The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated: The Qumran Texts in English (Paperback) by F. Garcia Martinez (Editor), W. G. E. Watson (Translator)" is a must for every researcher of these texts. As one of the editors of the cross references for "The Comprehensive New Testament," I greatly appreciated the superior alphanumeric notational system in this book. The notational system incorporates previously used systems and creates the most universal identification in existence for the Dead Sea Scrolls. Each work is also accompanied by reference information identifying the cave where it was found.

The Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) consist of about 800 scrolls of which 225 are copies of various biblical books and approximately 300 manuscripts texts that are by and large did not survive preservation over two millenia. The scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in eleven caves in the Wadi Qumran area on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. According to carbon dating, the documents were written prior to the 1st century C.E. The 200 longest and most important surviving manuscripts are contained in the "The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated."

The Dead Sea Scrolls contain parallels to the Gospels and the book of Revelation - including references to the Messiah and the fishermen, the New Jerusalem, and the Apocalypse. The administrative hierarchy outlined in the Dead Sea Scrolls has parallels to the one outlined in the New Testament including the Messiah, Overseers, and similarities between the office of Maskil and Apostle (compare the use of the word Maskil in Daniel 12:3 to Acts 26:18). Dead Sea Scroll 4Q Enoch (4Q204[4QENAR]) COL I 16-18 and Jude 1:14-15 are direct parallels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Plain Jane
This book needs to be considered alongside _The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation_ edited by Michael Wise et al. Readers who find a commentary advantageous will want to seek out Wise's book. Readers who are ready to look at the texts and make their own comparisons are ready for Garcia-Martinez's book.

Garcia-Martinez begins his book with a short history of the DSS and addresses a couple of the key issues of the DSS such as whether they are a part of a sectarian library. Next comes a thematic approach to the Scrolls. The Rule of the Community and the Damascus Document come at the beginning of the book, but the rest of the un-numbered manuscripts are grouped with other manuscripts of a similar theme.

There are no biblical manuscripts nor are there any Hebrew texts. However at the end of the book are lists of all of the manuscripts and the caves in which they were found.
There lies the real advantage of this book: each manuscript is accompanied by an authoritative bibliographical reference(s) for those who want to know more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference tool
These comprehensive translations are of the non-Biblical texts found from the caves at Qumran, and are useful for anyone interested primarily in the *content* of the scrolls. The hebrew texts are not given in this work (those interested in such should search under title = "Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition", published both by Brill/Eerdmans), and the Biblical texts are not given (bibliographies are given for these texts-- most often the Oxford series *Discoveries in the Judaean Desert* is the primary source for Biblical texts).

Serious students of Qumran literature will need more than this work, of course, given that some of the renderings given in the book are disputed (debate over the particulars of any given text can be consulted in academic journals and monographs). The book is a solid compilation of translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written!!
"The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated" by Florentino Garcia Martinezis the best version of translated Scroll material that I have come across, and there are "others." What makes this translation excellent isthe unbiased, scholarly critique. Martinez does a superb job here! There isno "religious" leaning that I can see. This translation is notprejudged in any way, shape or form. This is an excellent reference bookfor anyone desiring to research the scrolls.

There has been an argumentmade against Martinez' translation. That argument says that since thistranslation was first put into Spanish, then into English something waslost in the translation. Not so! Florentino Garcia Martinez is a Professorat the University of Groningen, the Netherlands- a well renowned scholar. If anything, his multiple translations just go to show his intelligence andability at what he does(he runs the Qumran Institute). This is a reliableand very well written translation! ... Read more

Product Description
With two celebrated restaurants and two highly acclaimed cookbooks to her name, Zarela Martínez is considered one of America"s foremost authorities on Mexican cooking. In this book, the companion to her thirteen-part public television series, Zarela takes us on a tour of the Mexican state of Veracruz, a lush, skinny strip of land bordering the Gulf and home to some ofMexico"s most accessible and inviting dishes.
It was here that the Spanish first landed in the sixteenth century, and sustained Spanish influences give the food an easygoing Mediterranean character that is appealing even to people who don"t normally like "Mexican" food. Olive oil, olives, capers, raisins, and almonds are common in simply prepared dinners, while complex blends of difficult-to-find chiles and other spices are largely absent. The state"s 450-mile-long coastline is broken up everywhere by waterways teeming with shellfish. As a result, there is a wealth of little dishes that involve nothing more than some seafood, olive oil, and garlic with a handful of seasonings: wonderful soup-stews, fresh fillets stuffed with seafood mélanges, appetizers such as Shrimp Salad in Avocado Halves and Garlickly Stir-Fried Shrimp, and the state"s most famous dish, red snapper a la veracruzana.
At the same time, Veracruz's strong Caribbean orientation and powerful Afro-Cuban legacy offer plenty of choices for cooks who want kitchen adventure. The Veracruzan table also features innumerable variations on tortillas that make wonderful little meals.
In all, Zarela provides more than 150 dishes that are perfect for parties or even ordinary suppers: Crab and Avocado Salad, Orange-Flavored Chicken, Wild Mushrooms in Vinaigrette, and Coconut Layer Cake.
Much more than a cookbook, ZARELA'S VERACRUZ is also a mesmerizing travelogue and an absorbing portrait of Mexico"s most exuberant state. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Autentico
I purchased the book used and it arrived in excellent condition.Hardly looks used. Also, the recipes in this book are definitely authentic to the region.I lived in Xalapa, Veracruz and wished I had gotten the recipes for the food, especially sauces.Zarela does a good job of bringing authentic recipes to the English-speaking audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not another Tex-Mex wannabe book
Zarela Martinez is one of my favorite authors of Mexican cookbooks. I have searched at great length to find books of Mexican cooking which are authentic, and not adapted to suit American palates. The cuisine of Veracruz is really varied and due to influences from Mexico, Africa, and the Caribbean. Most of the recipes in this book are not what one would think of as stereotypically Mexican. This makes a great armchair read, but the recipes are delicious, especially the shrimp marinated in beer and cooked with a chipotle chile paste. Out of this world!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Luscious Fusion of Mexican, Spanish & Caribbean
What a marvelous cookbook. With worthy introduction of the region of Veracruz and its culinary traditions and their influences, this book not only provides wonderful, unique recipes but accents them with the cultural flavor from which they originate.

The sub-title says what this cookbook is about well: Cooking and Culture in Mexico's Tropical Melting Pot.Also, a great section and the ingredients, their purchase and preparation.

The recipes are just wonderful!Tried the Tostadas with Hashed Crab, Masa-Sweet Potato Shells with Fillings, Santa Maria's Chicken Soup with Noodles, Shredded Chicken in Blackberry Liquor Sauce, Moors and Christians (black beans and white rice).

These are most delightful, easy to prepare and gorgeous and exciting to offer guest diners. This is a great cookbook to add to those who enjoy Latin-Caribbean style cooking. It's all here, with great color photos and well done recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Real
This book is an amazingly accurate portrayal of what life is like as a teen in the US today. What makes this book so impressive is that it never shies away from the hard realities and underside of growing up in America: drugs, sex, violence, loss, adults who let you down, serious responsibility...you name it, this book confronts it. That's not to say these things are glorified--they are wrestled with, suffered through, examined and ultimately the novel culminates in...if not redemption, then at least hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book about at risk teen is a sure thing
Trouble hunts some people down, while others seem to effortlessly avoid its camouflaged clutches. And still others charge headfirst into its clumsy, but firm grip.
Robert Lomos, the 16-year-old protagonist of Manuel Luis Martinez's latest offering, "Drift," wears his pain proudly all over his body. For him, trouble serves as his only reliable companion, besides his aged and ever working Grams.
Abandoned by his rambling father, a womanizing and party-hungry Tejano musician, circumstances forced Robert to quickly grow up and become the man of the house, caring for his innocent and perceptive little brother and his frail and mentally anguished mother.
But the stress from the daily challenges of a broken home quickly overwhelmed his mother and she, too, leaves Robert, taking his little brother with her to California where her overbearing sister wrapped her in a protective cocoon.
Written in the first person, the free-flowing, steam-of-consciousness-driven novel opens at Sunnydale Christian Academy in the barely fictionalized version of San Antonio where Robert lives now with his grandmother.
Sunnydale represents a last ditch effort by Grams to keep Robert, who has been kicked out of two school districts in just as many years, from becoming a "burro" like her.
Although the school is strict and even degrading - making the students raise a flag to go to the bathroom - Robert plays along so he can realize an abstract plan to follow his mother to the Promise Land of Orange County.
Although it has its share of bumps and dips, the narration develops much more smoothly than Robert's scheme, which seems inevitably doomed by the boy's own self-destructive notions. These notions pull and push the troubled youth, like a deceptively calm river, towards rocks, rapids, and a great, final fall, while his bruised and battered body drifts along for the ride.
Painful and frustrating, Robert's journey towards the verge of either oblivion or manhood and his swift plunge over the edge also compel the reader along with concealed currents.
These currents, however, spring from the reader's own history, a checkered past mixed up with a city that is simultaneously beautiful and dangerous, inviting and repulsive.
Robert shares this same confused, yet powerfully intimate relationship with San Antonio. The reader immediately empathizes with Robert, who makes references to the molinos, the "Edgewood School District," la matanza, the Alizondo Courts and the yerba buena of the West Side.
And while the educational system would be quick to label him as "at risk," we quickly realize he is no typical juvenile delinquent when he alludes to "Slaughterhouse-Five," "Catch 22," and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
His love of books and aversion to school, however, does place him squarely in a stereotype cornered by another literary character: Holden Caulfield from "Catcher in the Rye."
Although a strong comparison could be made between the two - both on a journey, both dropouts with strong ties to distant siblings - Robert is far more, well, likeable.
And while Holden's aversion to phonies seemed sometimes paranoid, Robert's demons are not so subtle. They scramble to meet him, beat him and kick out his four front teeth.
Still, Robert keeps getting up, and we root for the barrio boy each time, hoping he makes good, because when he stands up he stands for all the disregarded, misunderstood, underrepresented young men struggling on the West Side of our San Anto.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sick of it all
DRIFT is the Robert Lomos' story as he travels through the journey that some of us refer to as "becoming a man."The product of a marriage that didn't last, Robert had to grow up when he should have been thinking of little kid stuff: carnivals instead of caring for his baby brother; Little League instead of worrying about his father's infidelity; homecoming instead of witnessing his mother's mental breakdown.Robert has sees his life take a downward spiral when his aunt takes his mother from San Antonio to Los Angeles, to aid her in her convalescence, and insists he stay behind.

Robert lives with his Grams now at age seventeen, and his routine of partying hard, fighting, and cutting school has her at wit's end.So, she enrolls him in a private Christian school, where she believes he will be saved from the trouble that looms in his path. However, Robert ends up in even more scuffs and in even more bad situations than when he attended public school.Robert is tired of his ulcer causing him physical pain, and his mother and brother's absence causing him emotional pain. He decides to get a job, go to Los Angeles and try to convince them that he is now a man, a changed soul who is there to be their saving grace.

Manuel Martinez has carefully constructed his protagonist's voice. A strong, resonant narrator, Robert's spirit breathes new life into the first-person format of the novel. You could see Robert as clearly as if he were standing next to you, hear his voice as if he were whispering in your ear, and feel the heartache he feels, as if it were your own tribulation. A commendable novel, DRIFT foreshadows of more great things to come from Martinez.

Product Description
While the U.S.-Mexico borderlands resemble border regions in other parts of the world, nowhere else do so many millions of people from two dissimilar nations live in such close proximity and interact with each other so intensely.Borderlanders are singular in their history, outlook, and behavior, and their lifestyle deviates from the norms of central Mexico and the interior United States; yet these Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Anglo-Americans also differ among themselves, and within each group may be found cross-border consumers, commuters, and people who are inclined or disinclined to embrace both cultures. Based on firsthand interviews with individuals from all walks of life, Border People presents case histories of transnational interaction and transculturation, and addresses the themes of cross-border migration, interdependence, labor, border management, ethnic confrontation, cultural fusion, and social activism. Here migrants and workers, functionaries and activists, and "mixers" who have crossed cultural boundaries recall events in their lives related to life on the border.Their stories show how their lives have been shaped by the borderlands milieu and how they have responded to the situations they have faced. Border People shows that these borderlanders live in a unique human environment shaped by physical distance from central areas and constant exposure to transnational processes. The oral histories contained here reveal, to a degree that no scholarly analysis can, that borderlanders are indeed people, each with his or her own individual perspective, hopes, and dreams. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Border Classic
This is a very thoughtful interpretation of border culture. The author is a product of the border himself and is intimately familiar with the dynamics of relationships among many types of people on both sides of the border. Those seeking conceptual and theoretical insights about border peoples in general will find plenty of provocative ideas here. This is destined to become a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful Real-Life Stories
Granted this book is highly original in its conceptualization, methodology, and presentation; Dr. Martinez is well known for his research on the borderlands. What I liked bestwere the typologies of differentborder types of people and their oral history interviews. The reader meetssome of the most colorful folks imaginable. For me the most memorablecharacter is "Father Rad," a truly genuine servant of God whosesincerety and outgoing nature helped him to overcome classic culturalbarriers on the border. It's a "must read" for any oneinterested in learning more about the border experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent interpretation of border life.
I have lived on the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border for over 30 years and have many friends in both countries. I find Dr. Martinez' interpretations very helpful in my day-to-day professional activities, especially in binational relations.I understand that, apart from academics, othergroups such as health professionals and clergy use this book for theirborderwide training.I recommend this book to anyone who really wants tounderstand the border.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out-of-date and flawed analysis of the U.S.-Mexican border
Although I used this text in my Border Issues class for one semester, several years ago, I quickly discarded it. Stripped to its base, Martinez's topology of border society rests on an unreconstructed version of Wallerstein's core/periphery theory of development, with societies of the advanced industrial nations at the core and those of the Third World at the periphery. Global flows of Third World economic migrants have made sections of the "core," such as Los Angeles, almost indistinguish- able from Guadlajara or Mexico City, while massive programs of technology transfer to hi-tech, low-wage maquiladoras have rendered dichtomies of early World Systems categories moot. So, to build a conceptualization of a rapidly changing and expanding border area (bodies, telecommunications and infrastructure) around obsolete theoretical assumptions invites problems. And the limits of the book are shaped by such problems. ... Read more

Product Description

A hypnotic novel in which an American student’s quest to find the greatest living tango singer leads him deep into the labyrinth of Argentina’s past.
It is 2001, and inflation is spiraling out of control in Argentina as Bruno Cadogan, an American graduate student specializing in Borges, arrives in Buenos Aires. Cadogan is on the trail of Julio Martel, an elusive tango singer rumored to be even better than Carlos Gardel, the greatest singer of the 1920s and ’30s. Martel has never recorded and his strange, powerful performances, at seemingly arbitrary sites around the city, are always unannounced.

Cadogan finds lodging in a boarding house rumored to be the setting of the famous Borges story “The Aleph,” and soon finds himself drawn into the tangle of legends surrounding the singer’s life. As the economic tension grows and the city hovers on the verge of riots, Bruno begins to believe that Martel’s increasingly rare performances are in fact far from random—that they instead form a map of the darkest moments in the city’s past.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Tale Worthy of Franz Kafka
This is the English translation of El Cantor de Tango. It slowly becomes a very surrealistic book with magical realism thrown in all over the place.Toward the last 100 pages of the book, you find yourself in a town that is a labyrinth of facades and moving landmarks that makes you feel either dizzy or crazy. Maybe it reads better in Spanish, but I doubt it.I still have a few pages to go and maybe I'll get into it soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and mystical literary read about Bs As
A short but intriguing novel set in 2001 from Eloy Martínez, a writer whose work battles between history and literature. Whereas 'Santa Evita' (****) and The 'Perón Novel' (****) saw history dominant, here it is the literary side that provides an (allegorical?) framework for an almost mystical search through the horrors of Argentina's recent history. Best read if you have a knowledge of Buenos Aires and Borges - and a map handy!.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this!
If you love Argentine culture, literature and her people, this is an extremely satisfying novel. If you don't know a lot about Borges or Argentina in general, it may not be the best Martinez novel for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life of Buenos Aires was a Labyrinth
Tomas Eloy Martinez is a superlative writer. He has written about his native Argentina in award winning books such as 'Santa Evita' and 'The Peron Novel' and though he has been on the faulty of Rutgers University (Latin American Program) since 1982, he first wrote THE TANGO SINGER in Spanish in 2004.It comes to us through the English translationby Anne McLean. Many idiosyncrasies here, but at least we finally have access to what is one of the finest novels this reader has read this year!Martinez writes with a flowing, dancing style and with a technique that obliterates the lines between the past and the present in such a unique manner that his style is utterly mesmerizing.

Bruno Cadogan lives in Manhattan and is writing a dissertation on Jorge Luis Borges' essays on tango and discovers a clue to understanding Borges' words about the famous Tango singer Carlos Gardel (in early 1900s) in finding information about a current tango singer Julio Martel whose strange life and lack of recordings drive Bruno to fly to Buenos Aires in hopes of not only hearing Martel sing but to also engage him in conversation to further define his dissertation.Upon arrival in Buenos Aires Bruno meets a fellow he calls El Tucumano and they room together (we are not sure to what extent these two attractive men are bonded) and together they search the city for performances by Martel.Every performance location, though thwarted, introduces them to different characters who relate different aspects of the history of Buenos Aires: the rooming house where the two live is also the location of a librarian Bonorino who lives in the cellar and is convinced he has found Borges' 'aleph' ('a point in space that contains all other points') and Bruno falls under the spell of the new information. But the main goal of finding Martel overtakes him and eventually he is on the trail of the mysterious tango singer who was born a hemophiliac and has a distorted body and health.Ultimately Bruno meets Martel's lover Alcira and meets Martel in an ending to the novel.

The story of Martel's strange life is alone fascinating enough for the novel to hold the reader's interest, but Martinez doesn't stop there. He finds ways of reviewing the long history of Buenos Aires from 1810 when the Spanish domination was ended through the many trials of political upheaval, through the Peron era, to the present 2001 period when five presidents were elected and rejected within a week's time!He lets us get to know the mysterious city of Buenos Aires: 'the shape of a labyrinth is not in the lines but in the spaces between those lines'...'the true labyrinth of Buenos Aires is its people. So near and at the same time so distant. So similar on the outside and so diverse within.Such reserve, which Borges tries to assert as the essence of Argentina, and at the same time such shamelessness.'

Tomas Eloy Martinez' style of writing takes some mental adjustment to keep the timelines clear and he uses no quotation marks making it difficult at times to differentiate between conversation and reportage, but the style once understood is like the music about which he writes. This little novel has all the seduction and romance and challenge and lust of a tango. It is brilliant!Highly recommended.Grady Harp, June 06

Her work Is collected and exhibited around the world, and more than any other artist, Maria Martinez brought 'signatures' to Indian art. She and other members of her family revived a dying art form and kindled a renaissance in pottery for all the Pueblos. She raised this regional art to one of international acclaim. Featuring entirely new photography and 120 added pots as well as a significantly expanded text, this volume considers the entirety of this artist's immense oeuvre and important works and developments in her collaboration with Julian, and after his death, with her daughter-in-law Santana, son Popovi Da and grandson Tony Da, bringing the legacy of Maria into the bright future of Pueblo ceramics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Visually Stunning
Thankfully, the author took time to be with his wondrous subject, and the photographs are stunning. Not only does this history lend authenticity to the Legend Called Maria, but it provides the photographic path of her
resourcefulness in adapting to her creative partners, and even sticking stubbornly to her finest skill (creating the basic pottery). She never veered from her confidence in doing the piece of pottery-making she knew she did best.A lesson for us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPIVEY ON MARIA RECOMMENDED
I found the Spivey book entitled Maria to be a great asset to my library of books on Indian pottery. The multitude of close up pictures is very helpful in knowing the details of her pottery and that of her family. The easy to read narrative resulting from a personal relationship with Maria and others in the Pueblo make a very intimate kind of reading. The chapter of Maria's own statements certainly reveals the warmth of her spirit and generosity.I would recommend the book to anyone who is considering the purchase ofthe best in Pueblo pottery or anyone seeking identification of pottery they already have. ... Ms. Martinez writes a chapter about the 150th Anniversary of the Bear Flag Revolt which permits others, including us Anglos, to see events from the view of Latinos and others, with both seriousness and wit. There is a charm in her words, even when pointed.

It usually helps when we are given the opportunity to walk in another's shoes, if only for a few steps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, very well done
I have all kinds of books on Pinstriping. Even books and magazines with just short articles. I just purchased this in April 2010, and
I wished I had got it sooner. This book is the best by far. I have been around this artform many years and I pick up all kinds of information and tips every time I read one of the many articles. Herb
is a super talented pinstriper, lettering artist, and author. This book has so much information. A must have for anyone, if you want to pinstripe or if you are interested in one of the oldest hand applied artforms in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but not overwhelming.
This book covers everything from choosing supplies to inticate designs in a detailed and progressive manner. Every time I look in it I find a little tidbit to tweak my technique for the better.
I never thought I could stripe a straight line. I still have a lot more to learn, but I wouldn't have even known where to start without this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointed
The book never came. after receiving 4 e-mail stating the order had been placed and shiped a the forth e-mail stated my money was being returned

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched Applications....
Javier Martinez has worked hard to re-introduce grappling into the bunkai of the Isshinryu version of Chinto Kata. His basis: research into original Chinese applications of forms, many of which have been ignored or forgotten.I recommend this volume for anyone with a base in Japanese or Okinawan karate, this is not simply one man's favorite way to do something, and not another guide on striking alone.Nor need one be a student of Isshinryu to understand and assimilate the ideas conveyed here (I'm not).Martinez's methods are practical and sensible. This volume is 56 pages long, shows Isshinryu Chinto in 57 moves, and includes 12 Bunkai (applications). It is a fact that most of the deveolped Chinese martial arts taught striking as a precursor to locking and throwing (Shuai Chiao master Cheng Tung-sheng emphasized this as well). At no time does he suggest having all of the answers--the bunkai shown are the results of his efforts.Martinez has done his homework, and this brief and direct work does deserve our attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars CHINTO history corrections
In this book Mr. Javier wrote that Sokon Matsumura taught Chinto to Chotoku Kyan, who in turn taught Chinto kata to Tatsuo Shimabukuro. I am astonished by the fact that Mr. Javier has written so many book and claim to be very knowledgeable in karate history, but do not know that as Isshinryu practitioner he practise the Tomari-te version of Chinto, not the Shuri-te version as taught by Matsumura. Tatsuo Shimabukuro learned Chinto from Chotoku Kyan, who learned Chinto kata of Tomari-te master Kosaku Matsumora who learned directly from the Chinese kempo expert Chinto. Sokon Matsumura did also learn this kata from Chinto, but he developed his own Shuri-te version, which differ in many ways from the Tomari-te version practised by Kyan-related styles, such as Isshinryu. It's obvious that Mr. Javier do not know his history, and I wouldn't trust what he writes about other topics in karate. Don't buy this book, and search a real Okinawan teacher to teach you the real way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for advanced Okinawan-style martial artists.
This book is a self-declared, thoughtful dissenting opinion on the Bunkai of Chinto Kata, as opposed to the more traditional interpertations. It concentrates on pressure point attacks, control and throwing techniques ofWu Shu origin.

Given the dangerous nature of many of those techniques,I would recommend parents not make this book available to childmartial-artists.

The text to picture ratio is good for a martial artsbook (more text being better), though there are an excessive amount oftypographical errors which the author/publisher will no doubt correct inthe second edition.

I would highly recommend this book for any advancedOkinawan Karate stylist who has developed proficiency with Chinto Kata. The bottom-line:you vote with your pocket-book, and I have purchased theauthor's second book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amust have if you are an Isshin-Ryu Student.
Javier Martinez's book "Isshin-Ryu Chito Kata; Secrets Revealed" is an outstanding martial arts book.I have been studying Isshin-Ryu for 6 years and am currently a Sho-Dan.I consider this book a must for anystudent willing to open there mind and except the many differentapplications to this kata.It takes all that you've learned about Chintoand twists it a bit but makes it much more exciting.I have enjoyedtakeing the ideas and incorporating them into my practice and working withother students with these ideas.Javier Martinez has done an outstandingjob inprovideing the world of Isshin-Ryu a more complete understanding tothe beautiful Kata Chinto. ... In full confidence, on the steps of New York City's federal courthouse, he tells her that his client may have had ties to a wanted fugitive. Moments later, a powerful car bomb blows the man to pieces, with Melanie only steps away.

As shocking as the murder is, it has other repercussions for Melanie. Her relationship with the victim wasn't strictly professional. While recovering from her breakup with FBI agent Dan O'Reilly, she had become attracted to the charismatic lawyer. But after his death she realizes that she knew very little about him—including the fact that he was married.

Determined to find the killer, Melanie enters a dangerous world of subterfuge and double-crosses, going as far as the glittering lights of Vegas to discover the truth. But the more she digs, the more she finds troubling about her friend. Several people had the motive to end his life.

Meanwhile, the rapper's defense has been taken over by the slickest shark in the business, a man of questionable morals who may have had previous unlawful dealings with his client. But the outcome of the case isn't the only thing on the line. As the sole witness to the murder, Melanie is in danger of losing her own life. 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfectly paced plot and a satisfying, if ironic, ending
There are a multitude of reasons why you should read NOTORIOUS by Michele Martinez. A fast-paced experience? Check. Believable good guys? Check. Ruthless, though intriguing, bad guys? Check. Compelling plot? Check. Great cover? Well, that's not a reason to read it, but certainly a reason to buy it. And once you do so, you'll open it and read it all the way through --- top to bottom and beginning to end.

If you are unfamiliar with Martinez and her heroine, federal prosecutor Melanie Vargas, you need not fear jumping right into NOTORIOUS, the fourth book in her series. The author does an excellent job of making new readers feel welcome by backing up what has gone before with a sentence or two.

NOTORIOUS begins with a bang --- literally. Vargas is on the cusp of trying a high-profile murder case against Atari Briggs, a drug dealer turned rapper. Briggs is defended by Lester Poe, a world-famous criminal attorney. In an informal sidewalk meeting, Poe asks Vargas to delay the trial in exchange for testimony from his client concerning a notorious terrorist who is running drugs into the United States. Poe also hints at continuing --- on a social basis --- his relationship with her after the trial is over. She is interested in both propositions.

Her happiness, however, is cut short seconds later when Poe is murdered before her eyes. Vargas is determined to see Po's killer brought to justice, but as a potential witness, she is boxed off of the case by her own office. Still assigned to prosecute Briggs, Vargas finds that Briggs's new counsel, Evan Diamond, is less pleasant to deal with. Diamond has a bad reputation personally and professionally, and while he shared office space with Poe, the two attorneys were known not to get along. To make matters worse, Diamond denies that Briggs has any information for the prosecution or ever wanted any sort of a deal.

When her key witness is attacked, Vargas desperately seeks other testimony to convict Briggs. Her quest takes her to Las Vegas and a chance meeting with an old flame, but it ends in tragedy --- one that has its etiology in her own office. Racing against time, Vargas sets a trap that she hopes will catch a conviction, little knowing that her own life will be in danger before everything is resolved.

Martinez is an absolute master of infusing her novels with an over-the-shoulder look at office politics at the federal level, and she outdoes herself in NOTORIOUS. It is the ultimate irony that a government bureaucracy, particularly one involved in law enforcement, is often hindered in pursuing its mission as much from within as without. Intra- and inter-agency turf wars, support staff with influence out of proportion to rank, and supervisors out of touch with the job (if they ever were in touch to begin with) are but a few of the elements comprising the 10-ton bureaucratic millstone that Martinez describes so well.

Add believable characters, a perfectly paced plot and a satisfying, if ironic, ending, and you have another winner from an author who has quickly acquired a reputation in the thriller field for consistent excellence.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good read for mystery and suspense fans
This is a good and enjoyable read.A female lawyer ready to prosecute a man finds out that the man may have ties to a fugitive. The man is blown up right in front of her.She hasa history with the man and realizes that she does not really know him well. She determines to pursue his death and therein lies the rest of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, MICHELLE MARTINEZ AT HER BEST.
From start to finish this book managed to keep me in suspense.Michelle Martinez is a fabulous mystery writer she has become one of my favorites.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Legal thriller
Notorious is an entertaining legal-centered mystery focusing on prosecuting attorney Melanie Vargas. When the lead defense attorney for rap artist Atari Briggs is assassinated, Melanie vows to bring the assassins to justice along with convicting Briggs on the murder charges that he faces from his life on the streets before becoming a star.

The plot of the book mainly focuses on Melanie's investigations and subsequent witness interviews and periodic court hearings. There is more than enough to keep the book moving along at a brisk pace and Martinez' writing style never becomes tedious as I have found many legal thrillers to be. There are several twists and turns throughout the novel and I found it to be a nice, entertaining read.

I will definitely be reading the previous Melanie Vargas books in the near future and eagerly anticipate future additions to the series. It's always nice to find a new series of books that I can pick up and read for a couple of hours in an afternoon without feeling like I'm wading through something that I really have to put a lot of thought into. The feel of this novel reminded me a lot of a Patterson novel, albeit with less of the suspense and more of a courtroom feel. ... Read more

"It is a great beauty of a book, and I am so proud of you for standing with and for the disappeared. A sister, a lover, a witness."

5-0 out of 5 stars This story gets in your spirit
I read this book because I wanted to learn more about the survivors
of El Salvador's civil war. I went to El Salvador in 2006 and heard stories of massacres and slaughters that defy description. Perhaps that is why this novel resonates with me so deeply. The novel is about a young American woman who falls in love with a Salvadorean man who has fled the killings. He can not tell her certain aspects of his past, but "Jose Luis" wears his pain in his eyes, and in the cigarette burns on his back from being tortured. Demetria Martinez writes with passion and beautiful metaphors. This story pierced my heart with the sharp edges of it's passion and sorrow, and I can honestly tell you it is a novel that I will never forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance, Politics, and Imagination combined
This novel brings romance, politics, and a fantastic imagination together. You are drawn into this novel and it almost feels as if you are right in the midst of it all. The characters are described in such detail that you can see their faces in your mind. It is a semi-easy read and is not too long or not too short of a book, it keeps your attention and you don't want to put it down. The mixture of romance and politics is a combination that goes well together in this novel. Demetria combines reality with fantasy and she does it very well as she puts all the characters and the parts they play together. Maria and Jose Luis are perfect, they are both struggling and fighting their own wars, in their hearts and in reality and the fantasy they have made amongst themselves and in their relationship sustains them through the rough patches. This is a novel that is definately worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perspective Shifted
You can tell the author is a poet. This story was beautifully written, insightful and certainly rang true. When I finished reading it I felt I had gained a new perspective about how it must be for people who have their homeland torn apart by war. They love their homes, so the answer isn't just fleeing to freedom and safety. For some, there just is no answer. This book turned on new lights for me and moved as well as frustrated me.We can't just save the world with our wealth and generosity, as such actions are viewed by so many good and honest people as signs of arrogance and naivety.I enjoyed the closure the author proveded with the epilogue (after all, it was in part, a love story), but in reality the fugitive's fate probably would remain a mystery. This is a wonderful book, a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Political torture and the fight against it
In Martinez's book we find that the character that has suffered political torture and extreme punishment for his beliefs is not able to truly give of himself that which has been taken away from him. Yet, as it often the casein human life a second chance comes and a new life comes of it, free to seelife in a new way and to maintain the vigil for human rights and for thesurvival of the planet as well. I particularly loved the description of thesorrounding area where the two main characters fall in love. Good book.
