Product Description
Megan has spent forever planning her positively purple birthday sleepover. She's even made glittery purple invitations for every girl in her class. Then a new girl, Alexis Powell, joins their class. Alexis seems perfect: She's smart, pretty, and rules the soccer games on the playground. But no matter how hard Megan tries to be a friend to Alexis, the new girl is aloof or rude. At first Megan thinks Alexis is shy. Then Megan starts to fear that Alexis is treating her differently because she's deaf. When the girls are forced to collaborate on a science fair project, Megan learns the truth -- and realizes that nobody's perfect.

Once again Marlee Matlin draws on experiences from her own childhood to tell Megan's story. In this funny, poignant book, readers will root for Megan, a spirited young girl who doesn't let anything stand in her way. ... Read more

Product Description
From Children of a Lesser God to Dancing with the Stars, Academy Award®–and Golden Globe–winning actress MARLEE MATLIN shares her incredible life story in a moving and often surprising memoir, I’LL SCREAM LATERMore than twenty years after becoming the youngest woman to win a Best Actress Oscar for her stunning performance as Sarah Norman, the pupil-turned-custodian at a school for the Deaf in Children of a Lesser God, Marlee Matlin continues to be an inspirational force of nature. A working mother, wife, activist, and role model, she takes readers on the frank and touching journey of her life, from the sudden and permanent loss of her hearing at eighteen months old to the highs and lows of Hollywood, her battles with addiction, and the unexpected challenges of being thrust into the spotlight as an emissary for the Deaf community. With uncompromising honesty, she reveals the shocking incidents of molestation that took her years to reconcile; her passionate and tumultuous relationship with Oscar winner William Hurt; her romances with Rob Lowe, Richard Dean Anderson, and David E. Kelley; and much more. As fresh and invigorating as her memorable television roles on Seinfeld, The West Wing, The L Word, and her dazzling turn on Dancing with the Stars, Marlee Matlin’s self-portrait captures the chutzpah and humor of a celebrated actress who continues to defy all expectations. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I only got about 3/4 of the way through the book, then decided to stop wasting my time.Boring, name dropping, self-congratulatory.It was poorly written and just didn't hold my interest. As someone who has a personal interest in people with disabilities, I really wanted to like it, but this is not a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Inspiring
It is worth noting that Marlee Matlin has lived a very interesting life so far.Though the storytelling is dry and often disjointed, much of her life is retold in "I'll Scream Later".Perhaps my greatest disappointment with the book is its sense of balance.Martlin could have chosen to be very open and honest or very PG.It is disappointing that I can not refer this inspirational story to children with disabilities because of certain passages that are not quite PG.

Most people that are familiar with "Children of a Lesser God" and perhaps more recently, "Dancing with the Stars".But most do not know what happened in between and before her big break.Matlin begins with her early family life. She is critical of her mother.Though she claims not to be, a sense of animosity is very evident. She does not seem to see that some of her own behaviors may have led to the disconnect with her mother. From her earliest opportunities, it was very evident that Matlin had ability as an entertainer. Her rocket to the Oscars was so sudden, it is easy to understand why she had trouble adjusting to a new life.At the same time, Matlin's perspective certainly makes me look at William Hurt in a far more negative light.

Because of her disability, Matlin is type-cast to a degree. However, she continues to find a niche from "Picket Fences" to "Blue's Clues".Though there is some sense that she is past her prime, this is far from the truth.

All things considered, Matlin's story is interesting.I never had the sense that she was be dishonest except when she professed her loyalty to Chicago sports teams.I still need a little more proof.Still, "I'll Scream Later" is a rewarding read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight on a Deaf Celebrity
It isn't easy trying to succeed as a Deaf person in the arts. I work in the business/legal side of the theatrical trade, so it's been a different road for me. But I know some amazingly talented actors, writers, dancers, filmmakers, etc that are unfortunately starting out at a disadvantage simply because they're Deaf.

I start off my review with this because I feel it's important to point out. Marlee Matlin "made it", but her book clearly shows that it wasn't easy. She has faced opposition from both the hearing and Deaf communities. Yet she has continued to work on her craft.

There were a few parts of the book that were a little clunky and didn't flow into beautifully lyrical prose, but that made the book more real to me. As if Ms. Matlin had a hand in writing the book rather than simply leaving it fully to a ghost-writer. That's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I really enjoyed that the Kindle edition included all the pictures (albeit at the end of the book rather than interspersed throughout).

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting life
I enjoyed Marlee's memoir, and with a few complaints aside I was interested throughout about her life, and all of her success. I was a little taken back by the way she quoted people, because the flow was such that you were not sure when the quotes started or ended, and I found this to be a little confusing. She did not write this alone however, so I am not sure how that got translated like it did. I enjoyed her honesty, and candid telling of her life in Hollywood, as a mom, girlfriend, wife and a deaf woman. She is someone whom I would love to meet, and appreciate all that she has done for her fellow deaf community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deaf and Hard of Hearing Girls Along with their Hearing friends Should Read Marlee's books!
Leading Ladies and Marlee's other two books"Nobody's Perfect and Deaf Child Crossing" are a wonderful series of books that I would reccomend that all girls read. My daughter and I enjoy reading about Megan. My daughter is Hard of Hearing and it is great that she has a series of books where she can relate to the main character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the whole series from Marlee Matlin...
Great life lessons for pre-teens and empowering for those kids who may not be included in the "majority" group in their community.Your kids will want to read all the adventures of the protagonist in Matlin's series of books. My suggestion is to just go ahead and buy each of her books, you won't be sorry.
Also, for older ASL students, this book is a very quick read (yep, you can do it in one or two sittings) and a beginner's glimpse into one view of deaf culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lively and positive story.
Marlee Martin and Doug Cooney's LEADING LADIES continues the story of spunky deaf child Megan in a sequel following her fourth grade adventures, directed to ages 8-12. Here her class is putting on their own original musical based on Wizard of oz - and Megan wants to be the star, and sign Dorothy's part. When a friend from camp transfers into her class from her all-deaf school and covets the same songs, trouble ensues in this lively and positive story. ... Read more

Product Description

Megan is excited when Cindy moves into her neighborhood -- maybe she'll finally have a best friend.Sure enough, the two girls quickly become inseparable.Cindy even starts to learn sign language so they can communicate more easily.

But when they go away to summer camp together, problems arise.Cindy feels left out, because Megan is spending all of her time with Lizzie, another deaf girl; Megan resents that Cindy is always trying to help her, even when she doesn't need help. Before they can mend their differences, both girls have to learn what it means to be a friend.Amazon.com Review
Oscar-winning actor and producer Marlee Matlin makes her writing debut about a topic she knows very well--the difficulties of growing up deaf. Nine-year-old Megan is thrilled when Cindy moves in down the street, even though the two couldn't be more different. Megan is boisterous; Cindy is shy. Megan loves everything with a passion, especially the color purple; Cindy shrinks from attention. Megan is deaf; Cindy can hear. Together, they forge an unlikely friendship that is tested when the two decide to attend summer camp together. There is another deaf child in their bunk, and suddenly Megan seems to forget the promise she made to Cindy to be "BFF," Best Friends Forever. Cindy struggles with this rejection, even as it forces her to step out from behind Megan's shadow and learn to speak up for herself. Once they are home again, the two reconcile when a hair-pulling argument dissolves into laughter.

The preeminent author of fiction about children with disabilities has always been the beloved Jean Little (Little by Little, Mine for Keeps, etc.). Having said that, Matlin is no Little, but her writing style is competent and clearly describes the realities of Megan's world. And even though Matlin's gently told story doesn't rise much above the "message" of Megan's disability, it's still a message that youngsters need to hear. (Ages 8 to 10) --Jennifer Hubert ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DEAF CHILD IS THE BES
THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT.MY STUDENTS AGES 12-16 LOVED IT. IT'S AN EASY READ AND A BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT DEAF CULTURE

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
I've really enjoyed the 3 books in this series that I've read. I keep recommending them to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing up Deaf
If you are a camper throughout your childhood, then read this book. This book leads you to the childhood memory of how camping was like for you as a kid. I love it. So much reality is put into this book. This books discussed the pain, the isolation, and friendship. One of the best books I've read. So much humor and its a great children book and for adults as well. Its about time it raises issues of what its like being Deaf and the issues of trying to fit in the Hearing world. Love the way how ASL is described so well in the novel. Deaf Child Crossing the title itself is metaphoric message as well. It's about time! It puts a little twist in learning about advocacy as well. Brilliant way of using it. You'll know what I mean once you read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bundle of contradictions...
Marlee Matlin's Deaf Child Crossing stars Megan Merrill, a profoundly deaf nine-year-old living in Illinois. Her parents and her older brother Matt are all hearing, but they communicate with Megan through a combination of sign language and speech. Megan wears hearing aids and is able to read lips, but is unable to use the telephone, a constant source of frustration for her.

As the story begins, Megan is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her new neighbors...of their daughter in particular. She has few school friends, and longs for a friend her own age. Cindy is at first intimidated by the loud, forward Megan (she is unable to modulate her speech volume), but the two strike up a friendship. The two are like day and night: Megan's room is messy, everything is purple, and she plays Billy Joel songs really loudly, where Cindy's room is white, plain, and orderly. Megan is computer savvy, where Cindy's never been on a chat room. Megan is good at Rollerblading, while Cindy runs into things. But Megan and Cindy quickly declare each other BFF: Best Friends Forever, and Cindy tries to learn sign language so that the two have an easier time communicating.

Megan becomes really upset when her mom wants her to go to a summer camp, throwing tantrums and going into hysterics. She has a top-secret reason why she's reluctant, but Cindy eventually convinces her that they should go to camp together. Before they even get on the bus, the two have had a major falling out over Cindy signing for Megan in a department store. Megan is furious that Cindy would dare to help her without asking first, and Cindy can't understand what Megan is so upset about.

Megan has a lot to learn about being a good friend, though. At camp, she quickly abandons Cindy for Lizzie, another deaf girl. And when Megan and Cindy's cabin come up with a great idea, Megan claims all the credit, even though it was Cindy's idea. A dramatic ghost story sets the climax in motion, but there's nothing too traumatic.

The child-friendly introduction to Deaf culture (Closed Captioning, TDD, sign language interpreters, signing songs) was generally effective, but it would have been nice if a fingerspelling alphabet had been included in the back as was done with the sequel Nobody's Perfect.

Overall, I found Deaf Child Crossing to be a bundle of contradictions: Megan is an unlikeable protagonist. She's pushy, whiny, and when she comes up against something she can't do, like talk on the telephone, she throws tantrums and takes out her frustration on her family and friends. Instead of facing challenges, she runs, frequently getting herself into trouble. And she treats her supposed BFF like dirt, not understanding why it's important to give other people credit.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I Love This Book Just The Way It Is"
Coining Megan's favorite Billy Joel song, this book is fine read for all.The book says it is appropriate for ages 8-12, but I think even older youth and adults alike will enjoy this fine read about young people maturing.

The story revolves around the maturing of two neighborhood girls of 9, one deaf and the other hearing. From each other they gain much: a best new friend, understanding of differences, and growing to find love even among quarreling, the best part is making up, etc.Takes youth of all ages back to summer vacations, summer camp, discovering best friends, learning about one's self.Truly enjoyable to dream back to those days!

This fine story by Matlin will expand many young and old people's perceptions about the deaf and their abilities.I'm going to share this book with youngsters I know, and have already donated a copy to a classroom's library.

Nice to see that so many of the reviews here did not take away the surprises at the end ... Read more

Deaf since she was 18 months old, she is the youngest woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which she won at the age of 21 for Children of a Lesser God. Matlin was born in Morton Grove, Illinois, to Libby and Donald Matlin, an automobile dealer. She has two older brothers, Eric and Marc. She is of Russian Jewish descent. She lost all hearing in her right ear and 80% of the hearing in her left ear at the age of eighteen months. Matlin graduated from John Hersey High School in nearby Arlington Heights and attended Harper College. She also indicated that she is the only member of her family who is deaf, as her parents, siblings, and children are not deaf at all. Matlin made her stage debut at the age of seven, as Dorothy in a children's theatre (ICODA) version of The Wizard of Oz, and continued to appear with the ICODA children's theatre group throughout her childhood. Her discovery by Henry Winkler during one of her ICODA theater performances ultimately led to her film debut in Children of a Lesser God (1986). That film brought her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama and an Academy Award for Best Actress. She is one of the few actors to win an Oscar for their debut performance, and as of 2009, still holds the record for youngest winner in the Best Actress Oscar category. 2-0 out of 5 stars Flawed, but worthy of a watch.
This film is a low-budget tale of a small-time fence and police informer who cannot seem to successfully deal with a corrupt police department, and with his friends. Some good acting is managed along with sporadically interesting direction, and oftimes creative camerawork, despite a trite and muddled script. William McNamara's principal expression (deer in headlights), is appropriate for his part, while Jay Acovone steals each scene in which he appears in this work, filmed completely within that assault upon the senses, Los Angeles' Skid Row. Attempts at humour are welcome, but a better script would have been necessary to make this an artistic success.
