Excellent guide to the winery's offerings
After visiting many of the wineries described within the book I found thecontent to be very much in line with my observations. Not an exact match(we agreed on about 3/4ths of them), though differences could be explainedby palate.

Even though it is difficult to remain current, I think theauthors did a very good job. The only item I found lacking is a generalguide to vintages, ala the tearout from some wine magazines. For example,which wines are generally best for a particular year and when it isexpectedto reach its peak. One specifically for the regions in the bookwould be helpful.

The synergy between Japanese anime and American pop culture is explored in this book, a companion piece to the traveling exhibition currently in installation at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. My Reality examines the role of anime on modern art; in particular, there's a technology-friendly bent to anime, which the book asserts has been assimilated in the technique of "serious" artists in both hemispheres. The book, much like the exhibition, touches upon the common anime themes of high technology, aliens, cyborgs and so on, but through a series of essays, draws a link between these and real-life themes such as gender roles and popular and consumer culture. Showcasing artwork from emerging artists like Takashi Murakami, Mariko Mori, and Paul McCarthy, this book is an interesting, although way too brief, commentary on art and culture in the face of technology and the future, as well as providing additional depth to the context of this intriguing exhibition.

ADisappointment
This is a this book of three essays with some just sort of interesting photos and illustrations. I was expecting lots of great Anime and collectable art that is inspired by Manga and Anime, but this is a companion to a traveling exhibit of art inspired by Anime and Manga. The art is just ok, nothing really interesting, and the essays are dull as if written for a thesis. There are way too many footnotes, and phrases like "ontological insecurity".I just don't see this type of art as high-brow art. Skip this book. ... Read more

Good, Practical Examples
This book addresses the use of computer models in species conservation and management.It is a very informative book that will be of great value to graduate conservation biology courses, government agencies, and land managers.The book consists of a series of sections on plants, invertebrates, fish, herps, birds, and mammals.Each section has a summary chapter discussing the state of the art for that taxonomic group and a number of case studies.Some of the summary chapters, such as the amphibian and reptile chapter, are excellent.The case studies are informative and give the reader a good view of the breath of modeling studies that have been done to date.An accompanying CD provides a number of example models that the reader can use to explore the power of these procedures.I highly recommend this book.

Darwin's Children, Greg Bear's follow-up to Darwin's Radio, is top-shelf science fiction, thrilling and intellectually charged. It's no standalone, though. The plot and characters are certainly independent of the previous novel, but the background in Darwin's Radio is essential to nonbiologists trying to understand what's going on. The next stage of human evolution has arrived, announced by the birth of bizarre "virus children." Now the children with the hypersenses and odd faces are growing up, and the world has to figure out what to do with them. The answer is evil and all too human, as governments put the kids in camps to protect regular folks from imagined dangers. Mitch and Kaye, scientists whose daughter Stella is swept up in the fray, become unwillingly involved in the politics that erupt around the issue of the new humans. As affective and touching as the first one
I enjoyed this sequel to Darwin's Radio. It was as touching and affective (and suspenseful) as the first novel. I also appreciated the hard-science plot and the definitions and sources in the back of DC. I had spent a fair amount of reading time wondering how much of the whole genomic story could possibly ever happen.

Not much, apparently, though Bear makes clear that molecular biologists aren't all that sure. (Somehow I had overlooked the genetic origin of viruses and that explication, alone, was worth the price of admission.) I also liked the blending of science and belief. It was surprising and well done.

I could have done without the villainy attached to the Republicans and Foxnews. As I recall, when SF masters like Heinlein blamed pols, they did not specify party and used fictitious journalists as stand-ins for the industry. I wonder why writers like Bear (and Stross, to name another who does it) feel the need to push their personal politics in their readers' faces. Sign of the times, I suppose, or maybe their editors/publishers require it. Still, despite this flaw (neither book wallows in it), both were worthy, absorbing tales I recommend to all, whether hard SF fans or not. Bring a hanky.

Borderline Awful
I have read a lot of reviews discussing how Greg Bear's prose is smooth and flowing, and that this book is full of biology, intriguiging, etc. Bull. Every other sentence is full of over-strained hyperbole, struggling to get attention with poor, over-stated comparisions like "the rain... drummed like a million bored fingers" (not an exact quote). This style added nothing to the plot and was so distracting to the point that I found my self not paying attention. Afetr about 1/3 of the way through I put it down and could not finish it.

There are too many outstanding sci fi books out there to waste your limited time on books like this.

OK sequel, too technical on genetics theory
After reading Darwin's Radio, I quickly picked up the sequel. The story itself takes place about 10 years later, and has 3 main sequences. The first and last part of the book is entertaining, and definitely a page turner. The problem lies in the middle portion of the book.Bear goes into a detailed discussion concerning genetics theory and ethics, but for this reader - way too much detail. I found myself skimming quickly through a good 150 pages, waiting for the story to pick up the pace.
Overall, it's good to find out what has happened to Mitch, Kate and their daughter Stella (who is now a teenager), but I was hoping for more...

The virus children reach adolescence
Scientists Kaye Lang and Mitch Rafelson are on the road. They flee and hide to keep their daughter safe. They need to keep ahead of the bounty hunters and the hysterical general public who are ready to turn them in. Their daughter Stella, product of SHEVA virus outbreak, is quickly maturing in the Virginia they are hiding. But Stella disappears, is caught by an informer, and transferred to camp run by Emergency Action (EMAC), with deprived of human rights. Fear and hatred of the virus children have made the 'Shevite' children quarantined by the government.The agencies fanatically devoted to segregating and controlling the new-breed children.A new disease begins killing SHEVA children in the special schools and camps. The public opinion becomes increasingly intolerant and EMAC even more powerful which leads to Mitch being jailed without trial. They get separated from their daughter permanently. Will the government's draconian measures be carried to their extreme?

In order to get into the book, the reader must have read the prequel Darwin's Radio. The retrovirus that caused mutations in the human genome and heralded the arrival of a new wave of genetically enhanced humans is continued in this book to show how the new children are reaching adolescence. The genetics and evolution viewpoint has been lessened since the first book to make room for more character development of Kaye, Mitch and Stella. Is is clear that the author has put lot more effort to make reader engage and feel the emotions of the tragedy. The new ways of communication by using complex verbal tricks, enhanced facial expressions, psychoactive chemical scents is well executed. Depicting the government as intolerant, gullible, complacent or savage to the point of attempting genocide is looming deliciously at the background. The book ends in a tragedy and brings out the first Shevite baby from their 16 year old parents.

Three (3) stars. Written in 2003. The virus threats -- we meet a woman whose pig's kidney transplant start producing horrific SHEVA mutations -- are technically very realistic. Although the book has focus shift to characters compared to the first book, it is still heavy on the medical jargon; there is an appendix to explain the many used acronyms. The disturbing thing in the story, also in the previous book, is the constant shifting of viewpoint. In one moment the reader is immersed into the thoughts of Stella and then suddenly ripped off to somewhere else. In some places these shifts take only 1-3 pages which is too little to be justified; they disconnect and make one feel frustrated. There are also side tracks, like an archaeological excavation that reveals Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens being together, which are superfluous to the story (already explained in the first book). The ending is a little short and the reader is left wishing he would have seen more about the progress of the new society. This book is like an ice cream that melted before you could eat it. If the book had focused on the three lead characters and their survival the book would have been solid 5, because one genuinely starts to care for the people. Promising, but not necessarily satisfying read.

Mixing science and religion
I read Greg Bear expecting stories based on reality, on science and the cutting edge of biology. Unfortunately, "Darwin's Children" reads more like an extended epilogue to "Darwin's Children," and while offering a little in the way of scientific suggestion -- mostly speculation of what the next phase of human evolution would be -- it instead drops in a load of religion. To place a religious epiphany on the same level as a serious exploration and extrapolation of scientific principles is, to me, completely unacceptable. The religious elements of the story have little to no attachment to the actual story of "Darwin's Children." As a result, the addition of a religious epiphany feels less like an exploration of the ramifications of the existence of God and more like proselytizing by a religious convert who wants to place the existence of God on the same level of fact as the existence of evolution.

In a better context, an exploration of religious belief and how it can be reconciled with science and nature would be fascinating. But in the context of Greg Bear's hard-science reputation, "Darwin's Children" comes across more like malpractice. ... Read more

Well Done
Sphere of Influence by Kyle Mills is sort of a relaxed thriller.There's suspense, but not too much.There's thrills, adventure and misadventure, but not too much, and there's Beamon who fits just right into a story about the things that can happen when all you want is out of this job.The writing is smooth and tight but the tension is not as high as most thrillers, letting you get a better feel for the characters.The story has a few unlikely twists, but the author keeps it all believable and there is little dead time as the action builds steadily into a solid conclusion.This is the first time I have read Mills and I really enjoyed the book

Great book dumb premise
I loved the book, the characters, etc.I randomly grabbed this book off the shelf to read nad wasn't disappointed.

I have 2 criticisms:

1. The whole concept of a rocket launcher shutting down the economy was (to my naive mind) dumb.Maybe it is a realistic option, but whatever.It didn't take away from the book at all.

2. Everything seemed to go right for the protaganists.

But I still enjoyed it, and would recommend.

I love Mark Beamon and this book is the best one of his stories yet!
I've "read" audios of several other books by Kyle Mills -- Rising Phoenix (2 tapes a bit too abridged), Free Fall (four tapes, great abridgment!), Storming Heaven (unabridged!). I've liked them all and marveled at the ideas underpinning the plotlines and Mark Beamon's brilliant strategies, but this is the best so far. I love Mark Beamon. I can see someone this intelligent lacking people-dealing skills and being mired in the bureaucracy.But when he can escape the box, can he ever think outside it! And what's almost as wonderful as Mark Beamon's mind is his humor - in the midst of dire situations. What a hysterically funny plan for ensuring the mob boss could escape! What a spectacular criminal he became!!! I don't know when I smiled so much over a nonstop action page-turner.

This is Entertainment !
Although as stated in previous reviews, the plausability of this book does tend to be streched quite a bit, that does not subtract from the entertainment value of this book. Like his previous four novels, this book moves at a very quick pace, has engaging characters, and a plot line that will have you examining your morals and values. I wish Hollywood had the guts to adapt this novel to film as this would make a highly entertaining movie and would be very original as well. With the moral ambiguity of this book however I know that will never happen. Once again Kyle Mills has written a very clever and unique thriller. If you are looking for a very solid and entertaining thriller that will make you look at the world a litte differently- then you should enjoy this book. ... Read more

An Authoritative And Convincing Book On The Importance Of Sleep
In "The Promise of Sleep" veteran sleep researcher Dr. William C. DeMent explains the chronic epidemic of exhaustion, insomnia, and other sleep disorders in modern society. DeMent stresses that most medical school curricula give short shrift to discussing sleep and sleep disorders resulting in numerous misdiagnoses, or physicians ignoring the problems people with sleep disorders have altogether.

I am a fairly light sleeper, and for several years flew international routes as a pilot. I found it difficult to overcome circadian rhythm effects in my sleep habits, and now choose to fly domestic trips as I did not want to risk developing some of the sleep insufficiency problems DeMent discusses in the book. When flying domestic trips, I have normal sleep patterns and am grateful for a good night's sleep. There is no doubt in my mind that DeMent is correct in his analysis of sleeping disorders, and I am grateful that a simple change helped me so much.

Although the book is long, I found much of the research fascinating. I found the accounting of successfully breeding a litter of narcoleptic Doberman puppies (p. 204) to be astounding: the account was so odd that it reminded me of fainting goats, although I'm sure the physiology behind the two is different. I also have done a substantial amount of study in various safety fields (mostly aviation and chemical processing,) and was unsurprised to see that many industrial accidents occurred when people were working on the back side of the clock. On p. 393 DeMent states "Nearly every major industrial accident in recent decades has occurred after midnight, in the early hours of the morning: the 'Exxon Valdez' grounding, the Chernobyl and Three-Mile Island [sic] nuclear accidents, the Bhopal chemical plant disaster. Students of system safety will not be surprised to hear this, and I agree with his conclusions, particularly as they relate to rotating shift work.

I think this is a great book either for those who have a sleep disorder, people who fear they might be developing a sleep disorder, medical professionals, or safety researchers interested in the effects of fatigue on human performance and health. The book is perhaps a bit over-long and redundant, but I found it a fascinating read and recommend it highly to anyone interested in the science of sleep.

Please don't waste your time,don't buy the book!!
Page after page i was hoping for usefull info. If you read real carefully, you are able to distill some practical info well hidden in between countless repitions of boring experiments that mean nothing to the average person looking for applicable advice. I tried really hard to find any proof that i had spent my 18 dollars and about 6-8 hours wisely but failed miserably. I read about 3/4 of the book and found 4-5 ideas that resonated with me, but the ROI is low, very low.

I've read through the 5 star comments and honestly do not understand them:
- the average experiment is repeated 3-5 times throughout the book
- there's is plenty info that is repeated 10-15 times like 'don't drive when you're sleepy/drowsy' (duh)
- he spents way to much time elaborating on personal experience, all the wonderfull people he met, the experiments he conducted, complimenting himself, complimenting what he did, complementing people he worked with, complementing the organization he's set-up
- it's out of date, especially the way it's written
- the last 6 chapters should be practical but he keeps on repeating the topics in bullet 2

Buy this book when you plan a phd in sleep science or if you're looking for a badly organized encylopedia. Don't buy this book if you're looking for a practical solution to a sleep problem.

I love Powell's books in Portland, OR but the only reason why they could ve made this a 'staff pick' must ve been because M. Dement comes from nearby state Washington.

I realy hope Mr. Dement hires a decent writer that is able to translate 40 years of authorative knowledge into accesible information in stead of an annoying, frustrating data overload. It's a pitty.

Excellent book!
Thought this book was an excellent book...easy to read and follow. The only drawback is that it is probably a hair out of date after 5+ years. The foundational aspect of it, though, is very well done. The research that Dement did over the years was profound and the stories that he shares are great. All in all it was a great book about sleep.

A valuable book, but may fall between audiences

Dr. William Dement was a pioneer in sleep research and has continued to be a leader in the field for over four decades, so this book is about as authoritative as you can get, though of course that still doesn't guarantee that he's right about everything.

The book contains plenty of useful information on a largely neglected topic, and this information can literally change (or save) your life if you act on it, particularly if you're not currently sleeping well.The main lesson is that you absolutely must get enough quality sleep to have a good quality and quantity of life, and to avoid accidents related to sleepiness.This means avoiding accumulation of excessive 'sleep debt', along with getting help from a sleep specialist if you have a significant sleep disorder.

In the audiobook, Dement goes into quite a bit of detail in describing how sleep research findings were arrived at and their corresponding limitations, and I assume that's even more the case in the print book.A benefit of these details is that they'll be helpful to physicians unfamiliar with sleep research, as well as other serious readers who want all the nitty gritty.But a drawback is that the details go far beyond what most people need from a practical standpoint, so I think a much shorter book would have worked better for a general audience, with a focus on telling people what they need to do rather than all the reasons why.

Overall, this is a useful book and I can recommend it, but I'll myself next be looking for a sleep book which is more recent, shorter, and more pragmatic.

He began his coaching career as head coach of the ECHL Wheeling Nailers. In one season as coach, he led his team to a 37249 record and a berth in the playoffs, wherein they lost in the third round. He left Wheeling to take over the head coaching job for the Providence Bruins. In 199899 he coached the team to a 56154 regular-season record. In the playoffs Providence won the American Hockey League (AHL) Championship with a 154 playoff record. Laviolette was named AHL Coach of the Year. Laviolette's success in the AHL earned him a stint as an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins. Having grown up in the Boston suburb of Franklin, Massachusetts, Laviolette was disappointed when he did not get the head coaching job in Boston after that season so he left for the head coaching job on Long Island. After taking over the New York Islanders, which had suffered seven years of post-season futility prior to his arrival, he led his team to the playoffs in both seasons he was there. He was previously the head men's basketball coach at Auburn University (2004-2010), the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2002-04), and Tennessee Tech (1998-2002). Before becoming a head coach, he spent a total of eight years as an assistant coach at South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and East Tennessee State. As a high school player, Lebo played for his father, Dave Lebo, at Carlisle High School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where he was a McDonalds All-American. The elder Lebo would later serve as an assistant to his son, at Auburn. As a collegian, Lebo was a 4 year starter at point guard (1986-1989) while playing for legendary coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina. While at Carolina, Lebo set the Tar Heel record for most consecutive free throws made (41 from January 3 to March 12, 1989), the most assists in a single game (17 vs. vs. Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 18, 1988) and graduated with the highest ever free throw shooting percentage (.839) in Tar Heel history.
