Product Description
From the moment he shot on to the big screen as Alex in A Clockwork Orange, eye lash, bowler hat and cocky swagger, Malcolm McDowell was destined for legendary status. In a career that now stretches 40 years McDowell has proved to be one of the most daring, dynamic, controversial and powerful film actors of all time; he has shocked more people than any other performer, knows no limits and has no fears. From his demented performance in the infamous Caligula, the schoolboy rebel in If..., the insane mobster in Gangster No.1 to the demonic killer in Evilenko, Malcolm has lasted in the film business as a survivor, Hollywoods' head honcho British villain and one of the busiest working actors today. In Malcolm McDowell: On Screen, Chris Wade examines why the man is so important to the history of film making, exploring his genius with film reviews, revealing facts and an exclusive interview with his son Charlie. Wade hopes to bring attention not only to his early iconic roles but also his more obscure, overlooked work, some of which is excellent. In the past there have been books on Malcolm's two mentors, Stanley Kubrick and Lindsay Anderson, but never one on McDowell himself; until now of course. Malcolm McDowell: On Screen is a riveting look into the mind and career of one of the true British greats. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clockwork Orange
Alex leads a pack of degenerate young hooligans through the streets of England on an ultra-violent rampage of rape and murder. After being betrayed by his friends, Alex is caught by the police and incarcerated in a state prison, where he volunteers for an experimental new treatment in order to earn himself an early release. Here at the Ludovico Institute, he is subjected to hours of brainwashing images and conditioning that force a negative association with violence in his mind that is accompanied by a wrenching pain in his gut. Now free, he is a truly a changed man, but he re-enters a bitter society that is still riddled with violence, where he is beaten to the brink of death by those he had harmed in the past.

Master craftsman Stanley Kubrick brings his own unique vision to the classic Anthony Burgess novel about free will and governmental control. This dystopian tale uses Alex and his droogs as extreme examples of youth in revolt, living without rule in an ambivalent society where teachers and family have all but given up on enforcing the law. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE paints the governing authorities in a mocking and contemptuous light, demonstrating their inadequacies through their dogmatic practices, failed social experiment, and loose hiring techniques.

While the great Malcolm McDowell would go on to star in many other excellent films, it would be his role as Alex that would prove to be his most memorable and lasting performance. He plays beside an equally talented cast that each manage to extract the biting cynicism of the script and bring it to life on-screen. Kubrick's extraordinary use of color and expert filming techniques immediately juxtapose the graphic subject matter and violence, a trend that is heightened even further by the Classical music score that is intrinsically linked to Alex's character progression. The culmination of these various elements can be seen early on, when Alex and his gang terrorize an older couple in their home to the gleeful tune of "Singin' in the Rain."

Nominated for no less than four Oscars® (including Best Script and Best Director) and winner of countless other awards, Stanley Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE is in a class all unto itself. It is a defining piece of cinematic history, and an important watch for any film fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clockwork Orange
I received this movie way ahead of the scheduled delivery date and it was package well.I remember watching this movie as a kid, watching it again as an adult brought back many memories..... Defininetly a CLASSIC!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Viddy Good Show!
The movie is a classic and great.Stanley Kubrick created an amazing movie from a great book.Malcolm McDowell became well known for this role and a movie about futuristic street gangs had a resounding effect on Great Britain where Stanley Kubrick had the movie withdrawn after death threats.Malcolm McDowell portrays a psychopathic hoodlum who rapes, beats and eventually murders vulnerable citizens. After 2 years in prison, he agrees to a scientific study intended to steer him from violent tendencies and make him a productive citizen.Instead it causes him to become a helpless victim of violence himself. The story is never as momentous as the quality of the filmmaking and direction. This film is truly Stanley Kubrick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This was a very good movie! I really enjoyed it. Although, there were those scenes that were hard to watch. The rape scene made me feel like I wasn't going to breathe. I really enjoyed this movie, because of the whole story of Alex. I cannot tell you about the whole movie. You're just going to have to watch it yourself. This is not a kid movie at all. Be sure you send your kids to bed, then watch it alone, or with someone like a friend. ... Read more

Product Description
In the tradition of Philip Roth’s Everyman, and in a voice that is unmistakably Frank Turner Hollon’s, the story of one man contemplating the nature of life—the ordinary and extraordinary moments, the successes and failures alike.
Life is uneven, unexpected, and unpredictable. And from the moment of James Early Winwood’s conception until his inevitable end, his life is no exception.
Early, the unflinching and inviting narrator of The Wait, takes us along on a personal journey—from family dramas to lost loves, from failed ambitions to the challenges of an aging body—all the while tracing the steps of his unique, though common, experience. Without agenda, Early shares both the darkest parts of himself and life’s brightest, most fleeting moments.
An honest and unglossed novel about the human condition, The Wait demonstrates that although our lives are forged by a handful of events, it is ultimately during those moments in between, when we are waiting for life to happen, that we truly discover who we have become.

Frank Turner Hollon lives in Baldwin County, Alabama, with his wife and children. He is the author of numerous novels, including Blood and Circumstance, The Point of Fracture, The God File, and Life Is a Strange Place, which is currently being developed into a feature film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Look at Yourself, Reading Wait
Wait is a worthwhile novel from an interesting mind, that will make you think about your soul, and the state of it, and the reasons why your soul may be in that state. It will make you look around your life with a new, healthy suspicion, and try to imagine your spouse with a gun in his hand, standing there blankly, ready to pull the trigger.

2-0 out of 5 stars grey boring man's life
This must be written by an attorney; so many are writing books nowadays...some even jump ship, give up law.....I found the beginning intriguing, the middle flat.....and the hero so drab and as he styles himself...invisible, substandard...and he succeeds....who wants to read about such a boring hero...if that's what you wish, just step outside, look at your neighbors...Yikes..get back inside, grab another book...I think a book always reveals the personality of the author.(Patricia Highsmith, the suspense author, thought so too)And in this case, that's a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wait is worth it.
Can't go wrong with this book. Far from a lighthearted read, it is well written and flows from chapter to chapter and before you know it, your at the end. A lot like life. Anyone adult should enjoy this book. Get it, read it, and then sit and think about your life and what it means to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A relentless and glorious page turner
The Wait----which could have easily been called "The Weight" -- is one of the best books I have read in the last ten years. It follows Early Winwood from conception to death, layering bawdy anecdotes over Early's harrowing choices, trying to calculate the value of redemption.

Hollon generally writes ambitious, smart, layered novels with the kind of thematic focus that fans of John Updike and Robert Penn Warren will appreciate, and THE WAIT may be well be his finest work to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars A slow but ultimately rewarding description of a single life, well-lived
In THE WAIT, Frank Turner Hollon abandons all glossy writing, extraneous poetics, rough-and-tumble grittiness and sly minimalism. He is solely interested in relating bare honesty to his readers --- to show what an honest account of a man's life must consist of. His answer, as suggested by the title, isn't the large events that string the "plots" of our lives together --- it's the moments in between, where we digest what has happened, how we should consider ourselves in light of our actions, and how we cope with being changed and unchanged.

James Early Winwood's narrative is a confession of sorts, but not told for any need to get a burden off his chest. Placidly, his life is revealed to us in four parts: his teenage years and college experience, young adulthood, middle age, and growing old. Each part consists of relating a series of plot points and pondering their depth: "There is so much to notice if you know what to look for. So much to be aware of around you." He attempts to make this point very early on, to make his project clear for the rest of the novel. His discussion of fishing --- where he claims that rather than catching a fish, "the importance seemed to lie in the silence" --- doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Probably Hollon's most remarkable way of achieving this so-called narrative of silence is through his descriptions via negation. To convey the power of emotions, he describes their indescribability; instead of facing up to the truth or to awkwardness, his characters blurt out statements, the banality of which exposes the depth of their feelings. Other times their silence speaks more than their dialogue. While it could be argued that this is just a cop-out way of generating emotional intensity with little real work --- and sometimes it feels that way --- it also does a wonderful job at pulling the double duty of conveying the theme while also painting an emotional portrait.

That being said, the novel is fraught with several flaws. While the story progresses naturally, the way it is told (plot and intermission, repeat) is tiresome and uninventive. It also appears to question the very premise of the work, which seems like it ought to be dedicated to a microscopic analysis of tiny, insignificant moments. Instead, the plot-based narrative tells a story with much less rumination than would be expected. And while we get fairly good insight into Winwood's psychology, the reader may be left wanting more.

The impact of these issues will ultimately be decided by the reader's tolerance for slow pacing and repetitive storytelling, especially if one is willing to sort out the gems of concise, powerful prose that are scattered throughout the novel. But a more fundamental problem is its uninventiveness. Thornton Wilder covered much of this topic 80 years ago with OUR TOWN, and THE WAIT contributes little new material to the subject. It's primarily concerned with stating its point --- again, with utmost honesty --- but little else.

Nevertheless, if the reader is willing to look past all this, he should prepare to meet Early Winwood, shake his hand, and cheer and mourn his triumphs and mistakes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as they described
I didn't think it would take THAT long to get the delivery, but Amazon said it could take up to three weeks and on that very last day of the time period, it arrived. The book was just as it was described. Not brand new, but not in tatters, either. It will be a great summer read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical storytelling!
In the vein of Walter Lord's A NIGHT TO REMEMBER and DAY OF INFAMY, this wonderful book details the horrific journey of persecuted Jews and their desperate attempt to flee Nazi Germany. As good as the movie which it spawned.A fascinating and important read, especially for history enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be in every Holocaust library
"Voyage of the Damned" is the infamous true story of the ill-fated 1939 voyage of the S.S. St. Louis, which carried 937 Jews who were fleeing Hitler. They hoped for freedom, but found only disappointment and, in some cases, death. The St. Louis made it safely Cuba, but the passengers were turned away under the influence of Hitler's anti-Jewish propaganda.Next, they sailed for the Florida Coast, only to be refused entry into the USA because of immigration quotas. For weeks the St. Louis sailed up and down the coast while Congress debated whether to make an exception and let them in.In the end, even a plea from President Roosevelt could not open America's doors to these refugees. The St.Louis was sent back to Europe, where her passengers were dispersed to France, Belgium, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Some perished in Hitler's concentration camps.Others lived to tell the story.

This tragic event remains an ugly blot on America's past, and is one of the reasons for the "Law of Return" in modern Israel (which allows any Jew who is fleeing persecution in any country to enter Israel immediately upon arrival with no hassles.)It is also the reason that Israel was the first country in the world to grant political asylum to Vietnamese "boat people" fleeing the Communist regime at the end of the Vietnam War. The story also had an effect on America's current immigration laws, which make better provisions for granting asylum.

"Voyage of the Damned" was first published in 1974 and became an instant bestseller. It was made into a movie in 1977, and won three Academy Award nominations. It went through a number ofprintings, and was re-issued in 1994 asa fine "coffee-table" hardcover with 300 pictures, including reproductions of tickets, telegrams, passports, menus, newspaper articles, official documents, etc. as well as photos of the crew and passengers. To make the story more personalized, the 1994 version also features "cameo" photo albums, focusing on three specific families. For sheer wealth of information as well as human interest, the photo edition is the one to buy -- if you can find a copy. ...
