Product Description
"HOW MANY SEEDs in a pumpkin?" Mr. Tiffin asks his class as they gather around the big, medium, and small pumpkins on his desk. Robert, the biggest kid, guesses that the largest one has a million seeds; Elinor, sounding like she knows what she's talking about, guesses the medium one has 500 seeds; and Anna, who likes even numbers better than odd ones, guesses that the little one has 22. Charlie, the smallest boy in the class, doesn't have a guess. Counting pumpkin seeds is messy business, but once the slimy job is done, to everyone's surprise, the smallest pumpkin has the most seeds! As Charlie happily exclaims, "Small things have a lot going on inside of them." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
As an educator, "How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin" was perfect for the science unit that I did with Kindergartners. It could also be used in the higher grades. Very cute book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT book
We found this book in our local library and bought it through Amazon. This is an EXCELLENT book. The other reviews are thorough; however, I think it is interesting to note that the main character's best friend, Alex, is a girl (which was a nice "surprise" for our son). Additionally, there are some great learning opportunities (math - as indicated by a previous reviewer) including some "life lessons" (particularly about being short) and some interesting information about pumpkins (I learned quite a bit myself!). Our kids love this book...and so do we! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Class Favorite
My first grade class loved it! I read the book after we estimated how many seeds were in our pumpkin. We estimated how many seed were in our pumpkin. They loved pointing out facts that they learned from the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?
This book is about a young boy, Charlie who is shorter than all his other classmates. Charlie dislikes having to line up at school because Mr. Tiffin has his class do so by size, and Charlie is always last.Until one day Mr. Tiffin comes up with a class activity where he has the class count pumpkin seeds. There are three pumpkins, one is big, one is medium and the other is small. He has the students get into groups to count the seeds in the pumpkins. Charlie is in a group all alone and ends up with the small pumpkin. Everyone seems to think his will have the least amount of seeds because it is the smallest. Until finally the class counts and reveals how many seeds were in the pumpkins it just so happens Charlie's pumpkin had the most seeds.Charlie then comes to realize small is okay after all.Mr. Tiffin allows the class to line up after they count the seeds by smallest to largest and Charlie finally is the first in line! This is a great book to use with young children who are learning to count in groups and the illustrations also appear to represent a diverse group of students. Each of them are a little different than the other in terms of size, color and the type of clothing they wear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christopher Award
This is not a review really, and I haven't read the book. However, I wanted to let people know that this book received The Christopher Award for Young People Books, ages 6-8, in 2008.In my opinion, this is a very prestigious award, given to works that exemplify the human spirit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes galore.
A candid view of the Vietnam war from the perspective of Robert McNamara, who served as Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. McNamara, along with others, were dubbed "the best and the brightest", but failed miserably in their estimate of the situation in Vietnam and in the execution of the war. McNamara exposes the mistakes that were made. He concluded that 3 critical elements required for success were lacking in Vietnam: a stable government; a stable economy; and support of the war effort by the Vietnamese people. He finally realized the war effort was futile and departed the Johnson administration. Hopefully the lessons learned from his experience may assist members of government from making similar errors of judgement in the future. This book is well worth reading and lends credence to the cliche "hindsight is always 20/20".

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical
This book has the feel of a man pooring out his soul.He told the truth as he saw it and I saw no reason to find fault with his history. To get a good feel for the book go to Charlie Rose archives and watch his interview with McNamara and the producer of his documentary.

One thing that will upset many people is to see how McNamara changed over the years but then refused to speak up when he believed the Iraq War was wrong. He knows the war was built on lies but still refused to speak out. That seems to me to mitigate the pooring out his soul for VietNam.

I would hope that the brainiacs like McNamara, et al, would somehow try to protect the American people but that does not seem to be the case.Such it is with politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Retrospect
A must read for those interested in the workings of the federal government during crisis situations. Provided me with an understanding of how the US became involved in the Vietnam War and the conflict of decisions on the prosecution of the war. I am a Vietnam Veteran.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read.
I don't have any wordy review. I doubt I can add anything that hasn't been discussed already. I just wanted to submit my five stars to Amazon. But I do want to say that Bob McNamara reminds us that the majority of elected officials are men and women who dearly love their country and act in accordance with that love. It is easy to agree upon a goal. It is much more difficult to agree upon the strategies to achieve that goal. Vietnam is a tragic example, made even more tragic by the fact that we so rarely learn from history.

From the author: This study analyzed and synthesized findings from selected studies conducted from 1960 through 1997 regarding effects of school sexuality education on adolescents' sexual knowledge. This purpose was achieved using meta-analysis. Sixty-seven studies that met the selection criteria were included in the meta-analysis. The 67 studies reported 72 outcomes regarding sexual knowledge, which were grouped into six independent variables related to knowledge about sexuality. A weighted effect size method developed by Hedges and Olkin was calculated using all studies. For all studies, 97% of weighted effect sizes were positive. The weighted average effect size on sexual knowledge across all studies of 0.41 was statistically significant, indicating a significant difference occurred between control and experimental groups' mastery of objectives related to sexual knowledge. It was concluded that sexuality education programs positively affect overall sexual knowledge. (J Sch Health. 2000;70(10);413-416)

From the supplier: School administrators are considering to undergo graduate study in the effort to improve the school system. However, it is believed that graduate training may be unnecessary because it is expected that training and experience are prerequisites for hiring school administrators.

From the supplier: Educators and students have mixed opinions on the question of whether to limit the number of sports scholarships made available to foreigners. Some believe that an individual's nationality should not keep him or her from getting the kind of higher learning that US colleges and universities can provide. On the other hand, there are also those who believe that scholarships for foreign athletes should be limited to create more opportunities for American athletes.
