Extrait : Zakes Mokae est un acteur sud-africain, de son nom complet Zakes Makgona Mokae, né à Johannesbourg (Afrique du Sud) le 5 août 1934, décédé à Las Vegas (Nevada, États-Unis) le 11 septembre 2009. Après des études théâtrales à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art de Londres et des débuts difficiles dans son pays natal vers la fin des années 1950, en raison de la politique de l'apartheid alors pratiquée, il passe par l'Angleterre dans les années 1960, puis émigre aux États-Unis en 1969. Au théâtre (domaine où il sera très actif), il débute à Londres en 1961 et à New York en 1970. À Broadway et "Off-Broadway", il joue notamment aux côtés de Danny Glover (avec lequel il fonde à San Francisco une compagnie théâtrale en 1980, The Black Actors Theatre) et de James Earl Jones, en particulier dans des pièces de son compatriote Athol Fugard . L'une de celles-ci, 'Master Harold'... and the Boys lui vaudra de gagner en 1982 un Tony Award. Black and White
I saw the staging of this play well over ten years ago.The impression is still vivid.This two man production shows how half-brothers deal with life under Apartheid in South Africa.The key is one brother is "black" and the other is "white" thus the blood knot.To see and/ or read it is the only way to truly appreciate it.Together they live in squalor.The "black" brother works, the other stays at the shanty.The "white" brother tends to the needs of his brother when he comes home from work.

The clash of black and white comes into play when the plan is to have the "white" brother "go into the world" for the benefit of both.At this point, the racist world outside comes rushing in.
