Best Book About Elizabeth Montgomery
This book is $300?????

Obviously, it is out of print.That is really too bad.Some other publisher should pick up the rights to Rita Piro's biography and republish it in normal size book form with better quality paper, etc.

That said, this is by far the most complete biography of beloved actress Elizabeth Montgomery.Crammed with facts from her entire, too short life, as well as family and never-before-seen pictures, this is the book all fans should read - and own.I have the fifth edition (2006) which I believe was the last.This is the only one with a 20-page interview with Richard Michaels, associate producer for five seasons, director of over 50 episodes and the man Elizabeth ran off with at the end of the eighth season.

I don't think many people will pay $200 or $300 for this book.If anyone in the publishing business out there is reading this, please buy the rights and publish this book properly.

If you want a collector's item, perhaps you can make a bid to someone who's willing to sell.

not very well put together
It was informative, but overall it wasn't that fantastic. Its formatting was full of misaligned spaces and typographical errors, especially with quotation marks. A few words had a line through them and I can't understand how that even would have happened on accident. Some sentences were repeated in later paragraphs as if the editors had copied and pasted without deleting the original. Most of the pictures had obvious digital compression and many were pixellated due to them being scanned at low resolutions and stretched out. Some of the captions say things such as "from very old negatives," but an old negative couldn't possibly influence digital pixellation of images. I also suspect a lot of the "old negatives" are scans from magazines because of the way the images look textured in ways that printed photos and negatives would not be. Some of the other images are badly xeroxed newspaper clippings.

The author's intro sets the book up as a more correct portrait of Montgomery's life compared to TV documentaries (I assume she means the A&E Biography, E! True Hollywood Story and MSNBC Headliners and Legends programs), because, unlike those which use other people like friends and associates as sources, she was using Montgomery's own words. The main problem with this, though, is that all of her quotes seem to come from TV and film fan magazines, publications which weren't always accurate. I'm sure a lot of the quotes and interviews were authentically transcribed by journalists way back when, but Piro never footnotes magazine titles or authors and only sometimes says from which year the quotes are. This makes it impossible for the reader to evaluate her sources. The bibliography at the end is in no discernible order and only lists journal sources by publication title and article title... no year, author or page numbers. I don't suggest the author made things up, but it is difficult to accept these quotes at face value if she won't even directly say where they came from.

I learned a lot more about Montgomery's early life and family roots than I knew before, but I don't feel like I learned much new about her life after Bewitched started. Piro was good with the statistical details (EM went to this school, then this school, they were members of this country club in this year, she starred on this show in this year), but learning about EM as a person was limited a lot to whatever she happened to reveal in these above-mentioned magazine stories. One part I actually did like a lot was the touching story of the blind fan who got to meet Montgomery and her family when she visited California.

Overall, maybe check it out from a library, but it's not worth the ridiculous used prices of hundreds of dollars.

Finally - a biography for Elizabeth Montgomery!! Interesting and detailed facts about her life.Love.

Av must have for any fan! Could have been longer and a little more detailed, but for what its worth buy this book!

THE BEGUILING MS. MONTGOMERY
I was too young to see Bewitched when it was on in the sixties, but I developed a crush on "Sam" in reruns, she was just so charming, sexy, and beautiful, I later saw her in a movie in which she played a woman that had been assaulted, I was like eight, and I was really upset, I mean my Sam was being beat up, but she was fantastic in the role, so different than her Bewiched part, then later on I saw her, in this movie that she played this shrew, she was mean as hell, and she was spectacular.This book is an odd mix of familar stories and it tries to get into what made this iconic woman tick..it's not a total success, Ms. Montgomery was a VERY private person and she gave very few interviews, I guess that comes from growing up with a famous father and her early huge success.At any rate, good read, but we really never understand the enigma that is Elizabeth Montgomery, but that is how she wanted it, it adds to her mystic I suppose. ... WORKS OF TIMELESS VALUES AND TOLERANCE

Intersting, fascinating and joyful.
I thought this book of Norman Rockwell's work was a fascinatining look into the typical/almost idealistic life of everyday embarrassing/comical/poignant situations which do commonly occur. The picture I enjoyed the most was "The Gossips" where upon I couldimagine the tale behind the laughter and enjoy looking at the differentfacial expressions and that there was such a great twist to the tale. Thankyou for such a great book!.

Couldn't stop reading
A fascinating look into LMM's early years. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend Mary Rubio's The Gift Of Wings for more insight into this complex, sensitive, brilliant writer's life.

Delightful insight into a world long gone
Obviously this is for fans of L M Montgomery - if you know and love her writing, you will recognise among the friends and acquaintances of her youth the characters that people Anne of Green Gable's turbulent world.But this wonderful journal is much more than that - it is a fascinating insight into a world which is long gone.

We read of Maud's complex family arrangements, her desire to be a good teacher and disappointment with some of her placements.Her small victories selling stories to publications, and the seemingly endless stream of suitors who proclaim love for her (my favourite is the hapless Mr Mustard).It is a tale of love found and not acted on (and the agonies that accompany it), familial obligations, frustrated talents and beautiful Canadian country side.It tells of heppiness, despair, joy and nostalgia, and is as engagingly written as any fabulous novel.

By all means read this if you wish to understand the creator of one of the world's most engaging literary characters, but also to have a glimpse of a world none of us will ever see the likes of.

The Life of Canada's Most Beloved Author
This is the most interesting and enjoyable diary I've ever read. It's no wonder that this was a best-seller when it was first published. L. M. Montgomery, who liked to be called Maud, was a remarkable novelist and diarist. Most of her readers love her for the Anne and Emily books, and I'm a fan of her fiction myself, but I believe her greatest literary achievement was her journals. I also believe that her best novels which will live on are the first two Emily books, Anne of Green Gables, Anne's House of Dreams, Rilla of Ingleside, and the Blue Castle. Also, of her thousand or more poems and short stories, about a dozen of them are outstanding little works which should not perish.

These early journals start when Maud was 14 and end when she's 36, a year before her marriage to the Rev. Ewan Macdonald. Maud's ability to pen a compelling narrative makes the journals read almost like a novel. She writes about her teenage years full of friendships; her year-long stay with her father and his bitchy new wife with whom she didn't get along; her college days full of classes and courtships (she would turn down several marriage proposals); her years as a teacher when she met and fell madly in love with the eldest son of the family she was boarding with; and then the dull and frustrating years of living with and looking after her aging grandmother, which nevertheless did have its happy days, including professional success as a writer, the peak of which was the publication of her classic "Anne of Green Gables." This journal is a most remarkable achievement of a most remarkable woman.

I enjoyed this book very much
I give this book a very high recommendation and think anyone who reads it will love it as much as I did.I have read a few biographys on L. M. Montgomery but reading her own thoughts, in her own words was even more interesting and insightful.I am looking forward to reading the next journal.

Extremely memorable and delightful experience to read this
I am 40 years old and have kept a journal for 29 years, therefore, the journal format fascinates me.I adore Lucy Maud Montgomery's works and in 1992, I made a trip to Prince Edward Island to visit all her old haunts with my daugter and my girlfriend and her daughter.I purchased the first two journals while there.If you, dear reader, would like to know what went on in Lucy's (called Maud by everyone) mind and heart from the tender, turbulent age of 14 until her mid-thirties, I highly recommend this book.It will transport you to a simpler time, an era where people read more, pondered in greater depth, made visiting one another a social art.There was no television, computers, internet and telephones had just come into existence.The automobile was invented during these years.The book is fascinating in a historical realm as well as entering Maud's mind and gaining a perspective on her outlook of life and those around her.I enjoyed this book thoroughly and anyone who is a fan of Lucy Maud Montgomery will relish this book and treasure it greatly.It added dimension to my life because people have always intriged me and what their thoughts are, and where they get inspiration to write about their ideas.By reading this book, it added music and dimension to my soul.She freely discusses her love life and her miseries and joys.Read it!You will never forget it.The following journals that were published were just as compelling to read.I own them all in my personal library. The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery Volume 5
The volume is a must for those wanting to follow this author through her own personal life journey of all five volumes.The book is now out of print so finding one took well over a year and finding it in hardback and excellent condition was a challenge.Lucy Maude wrote The Anne of Green Gables books as well as many others which are of excellent quality.They far exceed much of the drivel available and hyped up in the more modern books for young people.These journals clearly tell her own journey and point out the quality of L.M. Montgomery as a person who was able to create excellent literature and timeless stories even though she experienced hard work, intense physical and emotional pain.I recommend making the effort to find and read the entire series of this multi-volume life journal.

The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery: 1935-1942
Although the famous author's last years brought her much sorrow and depression, she continued to depict the world as it once more became plunged into yet another world war. In her famous journals, she described movies she saw, including GWTW, air conditioning, and the frustration involved with generational gaps. It is a must read for those who followed the previous books.

I've been waiting so long
These journals, are beautifully put together.I remember when I found the first one and then each suceeding volume.I knew this one was coming.I even called the author at Guelph University to ask her how much longer I would have to wait.

She said then that they had to wait for some of the people in the journals to die before they could publish them.I would guess Dr. Stuart Macdonald was one of them.

They thrill me and make me feel closer to thise amazing woman.I've read everything she's written now.The sad thing is that once this volume is finished there is nothing new to read.

The book arrived very quickly and was well packed and in like new condition.The seller was excellent to work with.The book is an important part of the History of the Prince Edward Island Canada as L.M. Montogmery was born are raised there. She is best known for her works Anne Of Greene Gables books.I would recommended this seller and these books.

This book is fascinating.
I have read all the Journals published to this date and this one, in particular, held my interest and I could not put it down.It is amazing to me that L.M. Montgomery is able to spin her magic even in a day to dayjournal.

Fascinating window into L.M. Montgomery's life
The difference between LMM's delightful work and her hard life never ceases to amaze me. This volume of her journals (the others are well worth it, too) highlights the changes in her life in her late years. During thisperiod she wrote "Mistress Pat", "Anne of WindyPoplars" and "A Tangled Web" (among others); stories thatare a little less idealistic, but the real-life situations have abewitching "tang". The changes occuring in her personal life musthave had an effect on her work. The aforementioned books weren't among myLMM favorites before I read this volume, but learning about her life duringthis period made me more appreciative of an author who was already myfavorite. Who would have thought that reading a someone's personal journalcould be so fascinating? I feel much gratitude towards her surviving familymembers for allowing her journals to be published. ... Montgomery's Magic Island...
2008's "Magic Island" is Elizabeth Waterston's literary exploration of the fictions of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, best known for the "Anne of Green Gables" series. L.M. Montgomery was a prolific writer, with twenty-two novels and hundreds of short stories published in her lifetime.

Waterston's approach relies on the metaphor of an island.Prince Edward Island was Montgomery's birthplace and a source of inspiration for much of her literary output.The "Magic Island" of the title was the imagined world into which Montgomery escaped from her often difficult life circumstances in order to create her stories.

Waterston matches the development of each of Montgomery's novels against the parrallel events in her life.The result is fascinating context and insight into the development of the novels and into Montgomery's progression as a writer.Readers will learn, for example, that Montgomery was driven to write nine "Anne" novels in part by reader and publisher demand and in part by her need to work through issues in her own life by translating them into fiction.Readers need not agree with Waterston's every opinion to enjoy this book.This reviewer disagrees with her interpretation of "Anne of the Island", but cheerfully acknowledges the value of being thoughtfully provoked.

"Magic Island" is very highly recommended to fans of L.M. Montgomery and the "Anne of Green Gables" series for its insights into the working craft of an accomplished author.

Indeed a Magic Island
For this insatiable and incurable Montgomery lover, every new book about her or her work is compulsory reading and this one is a gem. Well-known Montgomery scholar Ms Waterston's approach is orderly and compelling. From 'Anne of Green Gables' to 'Jane of Lantern Hill', each book is dissected and its vital organs are pictured against Montgomery's life at the time of writing, against the prevailing social and sometimes religious mores of her time, and, with the exception of 'The Blue Castle', against the magic landscape of Prince Edward Island.

It is such a joy to read viewpoints that closely mirror your own and you smugly think how very clever Ms Waterston is... Encountering deviant interpretations - deviating from your ideas, that is - initially make you shake your head, but the well-worded and well-argumented accounts soon make you realise that Ms Waterston may have it right after all. This book made me want to run to my bookshelves and reread all the Montgomery books and the 'Selected Journals'.

I would have to disagree on one point, however. According to Ms Waterston, Montgomery wrote about TWO islands: the real Prince Edward Island with the oppressiveness of an isolated and close-knit conservative society, and the idealised Prince Edward Island as a magic island with its abundance of natural beauty and its friendly communities with their freshly-painted farmhouses. Two years ago a dream came true for me and I finally made a pilgrimage to Prince Edward Island. And willingly indoctrinated by Montgomery's influence I saw just ONE island, where real life and fiction seamlessly merged into each other: indeed a Magic Island.

Delightful Overview of Heroine's Connections to Montgomery's Own Life
Elizabeth Waterston is a long-term L.M. Montgomery scholar, and has put out a nice little (221 pages) overview of every published Montgomery novel and the connections between her literary output and her own life.Overall, I found the book very readable and interesting.I thought that the format of the book, a separate chapter for each novel, though the chapter may be only a few pages, was a good choice on the author's part.The chapters are interesting and brought up some good points that either bolstered, challenged, or added a new angle to ideas that I have had over the years about Montgomery's books, specifically her ideas as to what constitutes a happy marriage, and the role of women in society.
I read this quickly after reading what, I believe, is supposed to be the companion, or rather a complementary, novel, "The Gift of Wings" by Mary Henley Rubio.That book was much more comprehensive and specifically biographical.Between the two, there was some overlap, but not so much that reading became laborious.For the more casual interested reader, I would recommend the shorter literary critique featured in "Magic Island," as it covers a lot of relevant ground without getting into the 700-page territory, though "The Gift of Wings" is an excellent biography.For the dedicated Montgomery fan, reading both of these new works gives a very well-rounded impression of the writer, her craft, and her prodigious literary output.Recommended. ... Great Text
The book was in great condition when received and was significantly cheaper at Amazon(even brand new) than anywhere else I had looked. Even though it focuses on engineering examples, it does a good job of explaining the subject matter in a logical format accompanied with visual examples to further illustrate the concepts. If you use regression at all, this seems like a great edition to your bookshelf. Also, it is available as a hardcover, so it will stand the test of time better than a paperback.

For Self Study Get An Earlier Edition
I have access to this, the third edition and the latest, the fourth edition, through my company's library.There is really no material difference in the content and I was able to save about 80% of the purchase price by buying a used copy of the third edition, vs. new copy of fourth edition.

Wonderful book for self study.You will benefit most if you have a good background in probability theory and linear algebra and want to understand the details and language of linear regression.Even without that background chapters one through three will teach you more than you will ever learn in most survey courses in statistics.To fully appreciate the whole book I think you need a one semester course in linear algebra and one or two semesters of probability theory.

Wrong purchase
I blamed myself for this wrong purchase, and hope you can avoid it. This is a book of solution for questions asked in Linear Regression Analysis, not the book. This is a collection of answers.

A wonderful read!
I have been an L.M. Montgomery fan since I was 10 years old.Now, as an adult, I think I appreciate her even more.Though the Anne books will always be my favorite, I had to read this simply for knowing it was the author's own favorite.

Despite some reviews calling this book condescending, unlikely, or overly sweet, I saw it almost as a reflection of my own childhood amongst my own group of siblings and friends - only set 100 years earlier.You must keep in mind these are stories written for children and no doubt meant to be a role model for them to be happy to do what is right.

What Montgomery never fails to do is create characters.Like Anne Shirley, she creates characters that become real to her readers, that makes us happy to know them in literature and sort of wistful not to know them in reality.The Story Girl creates a group of characters that play off of one another and that grow more likeable in the reader's eye with every turn of the page.I appreciate rather than resent the continual reminder that while The Story Girl is not beautiful, she is captivating - it gives the average girl something to aspire to.

The stories that The Story Girl tells are humorous and clever, and while written for children, Montgomery always manages to throw in some humor that an adult can appreciate and enjoy.I couldn't put this book down and will likely read it again and again in years to come.

One of my favorite books
Listen. Those of you who were calling it infantile when it refers to the children. Have you ever read Dickens? Now THAT makes me cringe,some of the things they say.

Real life, but sweeter
Like most Lucy Maud Montgomery stories, The Story Girl is about what life is really like, only slightly sweeter and more magical.She captures childhood in all of its intricacies and makes the reader care for the characters like they're her own childhood friends.You may not close this book having learned anything new about life or having developed any new ideas, but you will close it having made new memories that will feel as dear as your own.

Lovely...just lovely
LM Montgomery said herself that this was her most favorite book of all her works, and i just have to agree. although this is not my favorite land setting, the story just flows smoothly and naturally; flawless. the story girl will enchant everyone, her witty mind and bewitching voice, she is a wonderful story teller. everyday is an adventure for the children: Beverly (the one is telling the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Sara Ray and the Story Girl; always learning something new.

Good Read
This book was probably written for young people. But Montgomery has an excelent knack of describing children's life on a farm in the late 1800's and putting it into a very interesting novel. I would suggest Montgomery's books as a must read ... Read more

Ok but nothing new here
As many will have noticed books in GI pathology have recently come out in bunches. I am sorry but I really do not see much of a difference between the thin books (this the other of the Goldblum series, etc) while the larger manuals really are better than the rest of them (Odze, even the old Fenoglio-preiser and Lewin). What is the point of repeating in every case the same things? I mean, the Sternberg's manual does a real good job in his books, as does Weidenr in his 2 volumes. May be relatively small books in specialized areas are really redundant unless they offer a spark of different, bright thinking!
I think publishers should finally realize that what is more important today is how the facts are presented- since the knowledge is already widely available if somebody knows how to read through the pages (many pages often). Look at the Leslie/Wick book on lungs for example: there you have a different way to present dry facts that is more entertaining and useful to our work in surg path! The secret should be in a METHOD of presenting the facts that cuts through the chase if the book has to be practical and not the reiteration of things we all learn during the residency. ... The Confederados-Old South Immigrants in Brazil

This book is an excellent reference resource for those researching Civil War history and the migration of Southerners to Brazil after the War.
The author describes well those who migrated, the difficulty of resettlement and the long term affects of the relocation.

Interesting Collection of Academic Essays
This book derives from a conference about the Confederados and it occasionally suffers from the attempt to edit together a group of papers that frequently overlap. With this one caveat, I must say that TheConfederados is fascinating. Despite the occasionally kludgey back andforth references to other essays and chapters (and the repetition ofmaterial), the Dawsey's have assembled a fine book that examines the impactand legacy of post-Civil War immigrants from the U.S. South to Brazil; italso points out the contributions of other immigrants from the North andEurope who came to Brazil at roughly the same time. Especially interestingis the memoir of a Confederada, written late in her life, but rich indetails about her childhood exodus from Alabama and the difficulties ingetting to and starting a new life in Brazil. Also interesting is the studyof the preservation of Southern dialect by the Confederados.

A COMMENT
Neither an historian nor a scholar, but as a fluent Portuguese speaking American (born in Portugal) who spent half a century, both as a long time resident in Brazil and the southern United States, collecting data andcontacting descendents of the Confederate migration to Brazil after theCivil War, I find this book the first real scholarly effort on aninteresting, rather forgotten epic, though minor, of American history.Factually it appears correct to what I know of the people involved, thenand now, from 1865 up to 1974 when I last left Brazil. However, as asacademic production I find it lacks a certain feel for the"humanity" of those involved: the happiness and the tragedy, thebits and pieces of human interest that history (as do descendents changingactuality to pleasanter visions!} prefers not to speak of. There was asmuch sadness in the migration as there was happiness, as much failure asthere was success. The human feeling, I find, is missing. Otherwise, thisis a tremendous and most commendable effort. on a subject long forgotten.Perhaps, though small, one of the largest planned emigrations from theUnited States in its history. ... A good overview and example of her work.
This is a good overview of Georgia's works with examples from most of her periods and themes. An easy view and read.

Georgia O'Keeffe by Nancy Frazier
As a parent of a teenager, I took a peek inside to find out if there was anything on her days at Chatham Hall, a high school O'Keeffe attended in Virginia a century ago, which was then Chatham Episcopal Institute.

A few quotes from the book:

"she would remember that period as important especially because of her long walks in the hills "with the line of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the horizon calling me, as distances have always called me."' (p.10)

"I only remember two things I painted in those years....I slapped my paint about quite a bit and did not care where it landed."

"Of tremendous importance during this time was the admiration and encouragement Georgia received from the principal at Chatham, Elizabeth may Willis, who was also the art teacher.She saw Georgia's talent and encouraged it unstintingly.Even in later years Willis followed O'Keeffe's career, inviting her to substitute as art teacher when she herself took a few months off, and traveling to New York to see exhibits of her student's work many years later." (p.11,12)

"Georgia ... graduated from Chatham at the age of 17" and "went on the study at the Art Institute of Chicago...."

About Chicago Art Institute, according to Frazier, O'Keeffe said "I don't remember learning anything except that I finally became accustomed to the idea of the nude model." (p.15)

Apparently she blossomed as a painter later. O'Keeffe was "encouraged ... unstintingly" at Chatham.She even enjoyed patronage of a sort from Chatham in her employment as substitute art teacher. About her, Lewis Mumford later wrote "Miss O'Keeffe is perhaps the most original painter in America." (p.7)

"She was not unfriendly or antisocial....She joined in pranks with high spirits while keeping her reputation as a nonconformist."

Wonderfully written with beautifully reproduced prints.It was great to get information of her development along with excellent reproductions of her work.(...)

absolutley absorbing
After watching Road to Avonlea and Anne of Green Gables, we wanted to read about the author and found this book to be very interesting. It is a great introduction, but at the same time covers all the aspects of her life, with many photos, copies of her signatures and writing, little antidotes, and snippets of very interesting information. One can draw from these some of the people that are included in her writing. There is so much on each page and even though it is not a large book, it gives so much information of all kinds, that it is truly a lovely book, one that a Avonlea fan would not want to be without. I am so glad that I came across this little but powerful gem!!

Anne Fans, Rejoice!
This is the perfect book for any true fan of Anne of Green Gables, Emily of New Moon or Pat of Silverbush.It is a 32 page book in the picture book format that is loaded with photos, articles, news clippings, history and little known facts about the life of the Canadian author, L.M. Montgomery, who created all of these wonderful characters and many more in her books and stories about life in Prince Edward Island.
