Product Description
An instant best-seller in Canada, the first volume of The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery recorded the growing power and imagination of one of the world's best-loved writers, the author of the classic novel for children, Anne of Green Gables. The London Free Press hailed it as "pure gold, the deeply felt, finely evocative rendering of years both heartbreakingly sad and splendidly triumphant," and The Montreal Gazette termed it "one of the most haunting documents in Canadian literary history."
The second volume promises to be equally intriguing and powerful. Ranging from 1910 to 1921, Montgomery's revealing journal documents a time of great upheaval, both in her life and in the world around her. Here she records her thoughts about the death of her rigid, intolerant grandmother, who had ruled her life so strickly...her troubled marriage to the Reverend Ewan Macdonald...the move from her beloved Prince Edward Island to a small Ontario town...her shocked reaction to the First World War...and the rewards and difficulties of being a noted writer.
Spontaneous and frank, these journals are unusual for their narrative interest: Montgomery's gifts as a storyteller are as much in evidence here as in her novels. The autobiographical content will intrigue every dedicated fan of Anne of Green Gables and the other Anne books, but the Montgomery journals are also interesting because they provide a unique social history and the privilege of viewing closely the life of a remarkable woman. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Distasteful side of a famous author
To me, Volume II of this famous children's author's diary was an extraordinarily disappointing revelation of her character.I had read Volume I, which depicts L.M. from a young girl to age 37, and basically, I enjoyed that - however, L.M.'s groans about, and growing martyrdom over, caring for elderly grandmother, did begin to wear on me.

Still, that was not nearly so bad as getting to know more about the deepening of L.M.'s possessive, frequently selfish and self-obsessed nature as is revealed in Volume II.For example, there's L.M.'s obsessive re-recounting of her relationships with old flames while copying out her old journals; the judgmental attitude toward persons in her household and many other people (except toward those who she favors with affection). Her obsession with HERSELF, and how circumstances affect HER, is something unpleasant to read.

She is also somewhat vain. Her journal entry on her 45th birthday notes that no one could take her for a woman above 30 years of age.Huh.Her photographs tell an entirely different story.

I felt that L.M.'s emphatic mourning of the death of her dearest woman friend and cousin, Frede, was unbalanced (and to give L.M. credit, she admits in the pages of this journal that she almost always carries most of her emotions a bit too far.)While I pitied her as she recounted dealing with her husband's mental breakdowns, the distaste she reveals for him during the first onset of his illness, and utter lack of sympathy for the man's sufferings was really quite cold, although she did always do her duty toward him.

I still admire L.M.'s journal writing when it has to do with the natural world and her wonder over it.(Her absorbing interest and understanding of the natural world must be why THE BLUE CASTLE is such a terrific book.) And her character depictions and various stories can still be crisply on point; amusing, or touching, or all of these. It's when she's describing her feelings about negative circumstances in her life and the people around her - her relatives and friends and even just acquaintances - that another, less charitable and more self-obsessed side is revealed and all that charm is utterly lost.I felt I'd learned sides of this author that I wish I'd left undiscovered. The editor(s) of these journals give wholehearted admiration to L.M. Montgomery both as an author and as a person, but I'm afraid I can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The journals
This is a fabulous work.As a teenager, I read all the novels published by L.M. Montgomery and absolutely loved them. The journals, though, add another dimension to her writing.I have read all 4 volumes of the published journals (supposedly there is one more to come) multiple times. These books offer a fascinating look into the upper middle class life style from the late 1800s to the mid 1930s when the author passed away. Some of issues she covers:
-a powerful look at World War I from the view of Ontario resident
-childbirth in the days before pain killers (she said a toothache was worse)
-her awe at scientific advance (when vitamins were discovered she realized why she was always so lethargic all winter)
-her husband's mental illness in the days before drugs
-meeting the who's who of Canada at the time
Absolutely fascinating for anyone who loves history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Montgomery's Journals
VolumeII is easily the best of Maud's journals; it is the one that I "dip" into whenever I have a few moments or need a bedtime book andconsequently is starting to show some wear and tear. It covers the most dramatic points in her life--her marriage, birth of her sons, the discovery of her husband's mental illness, and the death of her best friend, as well as her most prolific years as a writer. She hasn't yet begun to hide as much in her journals, which makes the third and fourth volumes frustrating to read. Since anyone reading the second volume will probably go on to read them all, I should say here that third volume was rather tedious with the lawsuits and maid problems, and number four, though weirdly compelling, was painful to read as herimminent breakdown is all to evident--it is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I wonder if the journals of her last years will ever be published-- I understand that there are problems with people still living, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book....
This book is fantastic! If you liked the previous "journals", you'll adore this one. It's more in-depth, full of emotion and a wonderful look at LM Montgomery's life at an incredibly interesting time in history. Can't wait to get to the next volume!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into one of canada's most loved writers
These journals put the writing of this rather amazing woman into a newlight. It gives the joy she has given millions a new more brilliant glow. They are abridged, but the emotion of what was taken out is still present. It makes her prose inspirational by comparison to her experiences and heremotions. ... Read more

Product Description
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942), the author of the classic novel for children, Anne of Green Gables, kept extensive journals for most of her life, beginning them in 1889 when she was fourteen and continuing them until shortly before her death. An instant bestseller in Canada, the first volume of The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery covers the years up to 1910 and culminates in the publication of Anne of Green Gables. The second volume (1910-1921) portrays Montgomery in the midst of great upheaval, both in her life and in the world around her. Now, the long-awaited third volume brings us through her middle years, a time when Montgomery's personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex.

Ranging from 1921-1929, this revealing journal documents her efforts to juggle the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family--everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. Here she writes of thetriumphs and trials of being a best-selling author: growing fame; the succeessful midwifery of her new heroines Emily and Marigold and a more adult novel, The Blue Castle; the struggle to allocate time for correspondence with publishers, fans, friends--and to actually write. We trace the happy conclusion of her lawsuits against an unscrupulous publisher and the disappointing outcome of a lawsuit arising in a minor automobile accident. And we learn of her personal worries: Ewan Macdonalds's envy of his wife's publishing and social success; the dark shadow cast by his attacks of melancholia; and her fear that her sons might evince similar tendencies.

In these years, Lucy Maud Montgomery turned more and more to her journals to record her insights, opinions, and epiphanies. These journals will not only intrigue every fan of Anne of Green Gables and the other Anne books, but will also provide an intimate look at life as portrayed by this remarkable writer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
Poor poor woman. I could scarcely put it down. But it brings up many questions. Why did she think that Mr. Leard, the Love of her life, was not worthy of her?Why did no one ask her husband Mr. McDonald what the heck was bothering him?Why did she not know in 5 years of courtship that something was terribly wrong with him? Poor, poor woman. The synthesis of this book is when she asks herself why a woman that she felt was mean and hateful was happy and she was not.Indeed, why?

5-0 out of 5 stars An insider's view of the early 20th century.
The third in the series, this journal continues to reveal L.M. Montongomery's life. Anyone with roots in Canada or an interest in history can enjoy this book as it documents the daily lives and routines of Canadians in the early 20th century by someone with a fluid pen who is right in the middle of it.It is as if you are reading your own grandparents or great grandparents diaries.Commenting on many aspects of the times, she very poiginately adresses the disinigration of the church body and the advances of science. A voracious reader herself, she revisits old favourites and reviews new literature and even addresses the point of pornography. She continually comments on the type of society she moves in as she hides her husbands meloncholia, attempts to hide a lost-lawsuit, and despite her great succes as an author, continues to be the minister's wife first. She writes more about the effects of her success in this volume and describes how it has affected tourism in her home in Cavendish. All the while, giving us insight into her very real daily life of her boys growing up and leaving for school, her older friends passing away, and her continual search for members of the race of Joseph--kindred spirits, real friends. It is a also a great book for people to read who are looking for mentors.L.M. Montgomery is a great Canadian woman and this series of her journals helps us see why without only seeing the perfect her. It is a charmer with great bits for dinner parties with friends.I eagerly await the final volumes. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables has been a continuous international best-seller, enjoying successful television adaptations on PBS and The Disney Channel, and captivating children and adults alike with the irresistible charms of its remarkable heroine, Anne Shirley. This wildly imaginative, red-headed chatterbox tries to fit into the narrow confines of Victorian expectations, but her exuberant spirit keeps leaping delightfully beyond the bounds. Indeed, when Maud Montgomery decided to reject the sermonizing formulas of the children's books of her day, she brought to life a character much closer to Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Tom Sawyer--also orphans, like Anne--than to the self-sacrificing, conformist heroines then in demand. In doing so, Montgomery subtly questioned the values of her society--the stifling restraints of its religion and most especially its treatment of women--while giving readers all the pleasures of her considerable story-telling gifts.

Now, in this first fully annotated edition of Anne of Green Gables, readers will appreciate more clearly than ever before the scope and depth of this extraordinary novel. Editors Margaret Anne Doody, Mary DoodyJones, and Wendy Barry provide a richly illustrated, completely revised text, along with hundreds of notes describing the real-life characters and settings Anne encounters, the autobiographical connections between Anne and Maud Montgomery, and the book's astonishing range of literary, biblical, and mythological references. Additional essays offer fascinating background information on such topics as the geography and settlement of Prince Edward Island (where Anne takes place); the education, orphanages, music, and literature of Anne's time; and the horticulture, homemade artifacts, and food preparation that are so prevalent in the story.Margaret Anne Doody supplies a comprehensive introduction, which situates the novel in its literary and social contexts, explores those aspects of Montgomery's life most relevant to the story, examines revisions in the manuscripts, and provides an overall sense of both the impulses that drove Montgomery to write Anne of Green Gables and the larger concerns it dramatizes so compellingly. This edition also contains a chronology of Montgomery's life, an extensive bibliography, songs and poems that appear in the text, and a selection of original reviews of the book. This wealth of material enables readers to grasp the marvelous multi-layeredness of the novel and to understand more fully its place in both its own time and in ours.

Elegantly and beautifully designed, with generous illustrations from previous editions, photographs of the places the novel inhabits, and explanatory drawings that reproduce the texture of Anne's world, The Annotated Anne of Green Gables is a major event in the publishing history of one of the world's most charming stories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delicate and funny
I have really LOVED this book since I was 13 years old and a friend gave it to me for my birthday: God bless her! It has been a book that I have read and read and read over the years, just when I needed some taste of the ingenuity and the freshness of youth. And the Annotated Anne of Green Gables gave me an useful look into the culture and setting of the adventure of young Anne (spelled with a "e"), especially valuable for me, being Italian.

2-0 out of 5 stars wonderful story, not so great annotations
I'm not concerning myself with the story of Anne, which is a classic and rightly so, but the annotations are often times not enlightening or of any interest or are even bizarre and often give away parts of the story, which is utterly annoying. The additional information in the back about PEI, life at the time and more are interesting, but again more than once they give away key elements of later books in the Anne story.
If you know the story of Anne already, this might be an intersting second read, otherwise I recommend to stay away from the annotations so as not to spoil the wonderful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for the "Anne" Fan
"Anne of Green Gables" is my favorite book.I didn't think it could get any better, then I discovered this annotated version.Everything you could possibly want to know about the author, details from the book, and information from the time period in which it takes place is provided in the margins.Wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book.
If you want or need to know more about Anne or LMM, it's just THE book. It's absolutely great, very informative and totally worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Annotated Anne of Green Gables
This book is great if you have to write a report about Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Montgomery. This book was very informative and helped me complete my project. There are lots of interesting pieces of information about the author, the time period, and the location in this book. There are many diffrent black and white photographs illustrating the background information for the book. The pictures of where the author based her story on were very useful.I enjoyed this book. However, if you are just looking for the novel without all the extra information, you might want to get another version. ... Read more

Product Description
Homelessness prevention is an essential element of any effort to end homelessness either locally or nation-wide. To close the front door of entry into homelessness, the central challenge of prevention is targeting our efforts toward those people that will become homeless without the intervention. This book identifies elements of community homelessness prevention strategies that seem to lead to reductions in the number of people who otherwise would become homeless. The contributing elements include targeting through control of the eligibility screening process; developing community motivation; maximising mainstream and private resources; fostering leadership; and ensuring the availability and structure of data and information used to track progress, improve on prevention efforts, and facilitate outcome-based contracting. Evidence from the six communities studied indicates that those employing the most elements seem to be more successful at prevention and better able to document their achievements. This book also identifies four promising homelessness prevention activities that may be used alone or in combination as part of a coherent community-wide strategy: supportive services coupled with permanent housing, particularly when combined with effective discharge from institutions, especially mental hospitals; mediation in Housing Courts; cash assistance for rent or mortgage arrears; and rapid exit from shelter. This study provides insight into approaches that will help prevent homelessness. It is an important contribution to our understanding of how to help homeless Americans. ... Read more
