Product Description
Just two years ago Alanis Morissette was a former teen pop star, dismissed by some as a footnote in Canadian pop history. Then her album Jagged Little Pill sold over 13 million copies worldwide, and a new queen of alternative rock was crowned.

Here Paul Cantin tells the tale of how Morissette transformed herself from failed teenage star into an artist whose work speaks to an entire generation. With multiple Grammys and MTV Awards under her belt; this singer/songwriter has achieved what none thought possible. This is the story of that rare second chance.

Included in this book are: Morissette's own account of her songwriting inspiration, exclusive interview material, a front-row account of the 1996 Grammy Awards, and never before-seen photos. This is the one book no Morrisette fan will want to be without.
Amazon.com Review
When You Oughta Know and the other singles from Jagged Little Pillfirst came blaring out of radios in 1995, their raunchy, confessionallyrics and hard-driving music suggested the arrival of anotherangst-ridden rock diva--no doubt with history of psychic dysfunctionand substance abuse fueling her art. On the contrary, Canadian musicjournalist Paul Cantin's respectful biography tells us, AlanisMorissette is a consummate professional who wrote her first song atage nine and released a chart-topping Canadian pop album at 16 (in1991). She had a happy childhood in a close-knit family, growing up inOttawa, Canada's famously wholesome and dull capital.

Instead of yet another saga of individual excesses vented into amicrophone, the real story here proves to be the more interestingdrama of a serious, dedicated artist working to make her music morepersonally meaningful with the same discipline and drive that made herearly commercial success possible. Detailed accounts of hercollaborations with a slew of songwriters and producers show amaturing Morissette learning to trust her own instincts and stoptrying so hard to please her mentors. The result, ironically, was aplatinum-selling CD (Jagged Little Pill) that pleased almosteveryone. Cantin's circumspect text doesn't offer much for gossipjunkies, but his close focus on the creative process is ultimatelymore satisfying ... though I still want to find out who inspired thejealousy-crazed "You Oughta Know." --Wendy Smith ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great, even if limited
Alanis Morissette's resurrection in the mid-`90s as the first of a new genre of post-modern, interpersonally savvy, male =and= female songwriters, stands along with Tina Turner's as two of the most remarkable, intriguing and illuminating sagas of re-construction in the entire entertainment world. Turner was in her mid-thirties when she "got traction." Morissette was only 19.

And that is really the "big story" here. Cantin's book may well be largely assembled from interviews with (highly significant) others, as well as interviews of a very private woman (despite her self-revelation; see below) that were published in =Spin=, =Rolling Stone= and elsewhere. But the author is a very sophisticated guy who understands the developmental, as well as creative, process. Those who are intrigued with her because of her remarkable grasp of interpersonal behavior and =intra=personal character will not be disappointed, even if =AM: A Biography= only describes her first 23 years on the planet.

(Would I love to see a "second edition?" Am I waiting for her to finish the book she's been writing for some time now? Duh.)

What is clear for those who want to "reel it in" about her is that Morissette is the product of two very functional, competent, adept and supportive parents. Her mother (a refugee from the Hungarian uprising of 1965 with her own, very fascinating, early life story) appears through Cantin's eyes to have been anything but the "demanding stage mother" pictured by many who have asserted this and that about Morissette's background. As reported here at least, her assertive support was considerable but well balanced and non-intrusive.

(We are given only the briefest glimpse into her father's personality, but I was easily able to hypothesize where Morissette's esteem of intellectual and analytical activity is derived.)

To the developmental psychologist, one of the most significant achievements (or failures, if it doesn't occur) in adolescent identity formation is the transference of trust and balanced autonomy acquired in childhood into choice-making in relationships with other people. If Cantin's picture is accurate (and based on what I know from numerous other sources, I believe it is) few people I have ever run into have made such choices as consciously and adeptly as the adolescent Alanis Morissette. (Most of us will never operate at her level of conscious election at =any= stage in our lives, though USC football coach Pete Carroll comes immediately to mind.)

Morissette sorted her way through literally scores of would-be confederates and mentors (many of whom are =well= rendered herein) from the age of 14 to 19 in her quest to shake off the identity that she had acquiesced to at 12 and 13 (leading to a very successful first album in Canada) and construct a new one.

Ice-skater-turned-talent-developer Stephan Klovan, singer-songwriter-producer Leslie Howe, talent manager Scott Welch and producer Glenn Ballard are profiled in depth here, and that is important because of their immense contributions, but there were many, =many= others. And they are mentioned in sufficient detail to provide a clear documentation of her sharp-eyed choice-making, as well as their considerable contributions. (Her later choice of producer Guy Sigsworth - not covered here - is another illustration of her remarkable ability to "see right through you" for the better, as well as the worse.)

What would make a second edition or her own book intriguing to those who find her lyrically reported adventures so illuminating, of course, are revelations about her =romantic= choice-making... and its discernable upshots. As interpersonally responsible to others - without being co-dependent (at least for very long) - as she is, however, I expect we'll never really know. Morissette may be one of the most self-revealing writers (in =any= creative medium) of our time, but she =is= a boundary setter. And she very charmingly continues to provide the conceptual explanations we can use in our own lives without stepping on the toes of others in her own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Alanis bio!
... I've read a few Alanis Morissette biographies but this one takes the cake! Paul Cantin gives us an indepth look into Alanis's life in a professional and wonderfully written way, unlike that so-called bio "Ironic:The Story of Alanis Morissette".If you're interested in an Alanis bio, get this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars a must for all Alanis fans!
I deeply enjoyed it. very informative. you get her whole life story written in a very enjoyable way. I loved it. I bought it and recommended to all her fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting
she had a very interesting life she could have been what ever she wanted to and she chose to be a singer...good for us!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This a pretty good bio of Alanis but it is pretty boring. It mostly talks about Klovan, Morgan and her family, not much about her.So it's not bad, but if you're an Alanis fan, don't buy it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Prodigal Daughter
After some much needed rest from the success of her judggernaut album, Alanis spoke with Paul Cantin. Not written in the voice of Mrs. Thang, Paul does justice to the hardship and creative renewshal she faced time and time again. The truth comes from those who know Alanis best: herself, parents, friends, managers and band members.
Broken up into sections, Fate Stay With Me and Head Over Feet, the book discusses her time as the pop princess of (Ottawa) Canada, her failed years and triumphant return with Jagged Little Pill. The myths of her life are demystified and the rumours justified or denied (like the ever famous who was All I Really Want really about?)
You Oughta Know is written -in half- by Alanis Morissette, a very candid book much like the prolificness of her lyrics.A worthwhile read for the fan to learn about her rare second chance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Number 1 Fan
I have to say that this book was very informative and told me loads of things about Alanis that i though i already knew. This is a must have for any fan as you get to understand Alanis as a normal person rather than just another million selling artist. This book shows that Alnais is true and as devoted to her life as we are to her

5-0 out of 5 stars You Live You Learn was Great
When my communications teacher assigned a 5-8 minute informative speech, I thought what better time than now to talk about Alanis.I thought I knew just about everything on her, and what I didn't know I figured I'd be ableto find on the internet and in magazines. When my professor said nomagazines or internet addresses allowed, I about died. I had some troublefinding a lot of information other than magazine articles on Alanis, butafter I found this book I had all I needed. It was not only informative, but extremely interesting and something I actually enjoyed reading.Ifound that I knew very little of Alanis and her past, and after reading itI had gained a great sense of respect and admiration for her.She is trulyan amazing, talented person both musically and in her personality.Shereally enjoys her music, and lives through it, which is clearly evidentafter reading this book.I would definately reccommend it to anyonewishing to learn more about her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read on a popular star
Alanis Morrisette keeps on winning new fans, I'm included.Even thoughher album Jagged Little Pill was played continously on the radio, this bookhelped me realize what a talented and devoted person she is to her musicand songwriting. With her new single, "Uninvited," this bookcame out at the right time... letting me in on her upbringing, backgroundand early years as a songstress in Canada. If you're a fan, read thisbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Live, You Learn
Besides Paul Cantins book of Alanis Morissette this is the very bestAlanis book. Well, it is definately among the best. If you need Up To Dateinformation on Alanis this is the book to read. It is the most recentwritten Alanis book, and has info on both the Tibetan Freedom Concert andBridge School Benefit. It has eight pages of color pictures. If you wouldlike to view the cover, it has the same picture as "Death OfCinderella" except smaller, and the backround is of Alanis facing uplike praying or something. The pictures are all black and white, howeverthey are beautiful RARE ones (like Alanis and Madonna and Alanis running inthe triathalon in mid summer 1997.) The review I wrote before is fiction. Ihadn't even taken one look at the book, however now I have it. It is anawesome Alanis book. I think that any Alanis fan MUST!!!!!!!!!! have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alanis Morissette: You Live You Learn
I think that this book goes a lot along with Death Of Cinderella (by Stuart Coles). It has a lot of the same text. The pictures are not your regular Alanis Morissette pictures, but they are good. There are a few mistakes on this book (Like on page 37) I would really recommend Paul Cantin's book as #1 though. You may be impressed. JpnOldMan ... Read more

This is a very good book on account of the information and pictures. Alot of people, even die-hard Alanis fans, may not know the info included in the book. There is, still, some information that everyone knew. This takes up about 60% of the book. No doubt the writer did some serious research for this book. This is the first book to explore the rollercoaster lifeof the talented singer/songwriter whose versatile voice anduncompromising lyrics propelled her first album, Jagged Little Pill,to multiplatinum sales and four Grammy awards.

Stuart Coles focuses on the events that transformed her from a teenpop idol in Canada to an icon of alternative music and figurehead for'angry young women' everywhere. He also examines her unusual anti-starbeliefs and opposition to drugs and alcohol as well as assessing thecontroversy which surrounds her success, with critical claims that sheis a 'record company invention'. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars First Album is NOT Jagged Little Pill
I have not read this book but by the review of it I realize I don't want to. If it states in the book that her first album was "Jagged Little Pill" then it's incomplete and fictional. She not only put out 2 other albums but also has music videos (inclduing one which co-stars Matt LeBlanc).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing life, amazing singer.
The best female singer, Alanis morissette. this is her life story, she didnt have an easy life. but that what made her the person she is today. if u are a fan/love her music u have to read what's behind it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Pictures .... too brief text
The pictures in the bio of Alanis are outstanding, and may be worthy of purchase. However, the text is too brief - and the author melds facts about Alanis with his opinions about her work and life in a rather unsettling way.I don't think this account of Alanis's life should be given too much weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wanna Get to know Alanis herself then get this book
If you are a fan of alanis morissette like me then you shall definitely like this book as it gives you an insight of what happened in her life right from the time she was born to the time she did her world tours ofJagged Little Pill..

I am sure that you shall like this book and Iconsider it a very good buy....it also has alot of nice pictures on goodqualitly pages, the print color is also very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another Quick Study
Essentially that title sums it up. The problem with most of these kinds of books is they cover every facet of the performer's lifebut they are too close in time and too enthusiastic to be definitive on the career of someone who is clearly talented and articulate but has a long way to go to develop to the level of those whom we will remember a hundred years on. This is a source on a life in progress not anywhere near a final word and analysis.
This review will serve as well for the second edition when it is listed here.

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE
I absolutely LOVE Alanis. But this book is HORRIBLE. It has HARDLY anything about her. He just babbles on about Joni Mitchell and Bjork and people like that! The word Alanis is mentioned like 2 times in the wholebook. The pics are kool, but the words are stupid. Don't bother buying thisbecause you won't hear anything about alanis.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a huge Alanis-o-holic but I still love this book.
This book is definitely not the book to read if you're looking for something like a biography, thoughts, feelings or anything like that of Alanis Morissette.I read this book expecting to fill this gap that I hadin my Alanis knowledge (I'd like to get inside her head!) but instead Ilearnt a lot more.

As I read it, I discovered that it was less to do withAlanis, and much to do with 'the female rock revolution.'BUT STOP:GOAND BUY IT ANYWAY!This book is really interesting, or at least I thoughtso, because you learn so much about what Alanis Morissette has been partof. Thanks to this book, I've learnt about Tori Amos (a great singer andAlanis' friend!,) Patti Smith (an oldish rock singer) and many more femalerockers, and it's really great!

The way the book is written can be a bittiresome:Barry Grills seems to be stuck on using the word 'ironic' everyother sentence, and also it is a little hard to get into, but I dorecommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT as great

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book of SHEET MUSIC from Alanis'first album, Jagged Little Pill, offers stirring renditions of the fabulous songs included on her CD. Or, they would be stirring if they weren't all so bad.

While classic soft-rock songs like "Perfect," "Forgiven," "Mary Jane" and "You Learn" are relatively good, the harder songs like You Oughta Know, Not the Doctor and even Ironic aren't very good copies of Alanis's songs.

Sadly, this is the only sheet music to Jagged Little Pill, so even while lacking in some places, I suppose it's better than trying to figure the songs out for yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Story Of Alanis Morissette
This is a book of Alanis mostly for pictures. They are good quality, huge, and many are full color. However the writing is not that thorough. Really all you need to know is read the back of the book ten times, and you will have read the whole book. The writing is actually really sucky, and she covers her days on Nickelodeon in one paragraph. Here is that paragraph: Alanis landed herself a starring role on the Nickelodeon cable tv shoe "You Can't Do That On Television" at the ripe old age of ten. As she would years later tell "Rollingstone" magazine, "It was a good, stupid, sarcastic kind of show. Very obnoxious and very tongue in cheek." That is all she wrote. STUPID and BORING! Especially that part about being the "ripe old age of ten." It's an excellent picture bio though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too many pictures to little info....
This book is a good book if you like pictures but if you don't it sucks it has way to little info to be a great book like Alanis Morissete A Biography from Paul Cantin

This is the first Alanis bio book. It has a lot of fantastic pictures, and the info is accurate and pretty interesting. However, the info is concise, so if you want a lot of detailed, cool stuff, read Paul Cantin's book (it's a 10.) It's a colourful addition to any Alanis collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for those who don't know much about her.
When I got this book it pretty much blew me away because I didn't know anything about her.But now I know that it's basic stuff any self-respecting fan should know. The pictures are great, though, and die-hard fans might even want to take it apart to tack on their walls.

5-0 out of 5 stars alanis is worth it
i think that any book about alanis is worth buying im a majore fan. this book pretty much tells the basic info but it does have great (crazy)pictures of alanis ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! "Walk Away" is a pop-dance song co-written by Alanis Morissette, Leslie Howe, Louise Reny and Frank Levin, and produced by Howe for Morissette's debut album Alanis (1991). Its protagonist sends a warning to her boyfriend who "never think[s] twice before [he] break all the rules", telling him "I'll walk away and say good bye if you don't want me anymore ... if I don't get the love we had before". It was released to radio and television as the album's second single in 1991 (see 1991 in music), but it was not given a commercial release. The single's video features Matt LeBlanc as Morissette's boyfriend who arrives late for a date with her, and it includes scenes in which Morissette dances. The promotional single for the song includes a radio edit only. The song charted at number 35 in Canada. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the woman
Every time me and hubby have a drink we play Allanis music. The first concert our daughter seen was her in Edmonton.Never read any book but we love her music. One wish in life would be to share 2 bottles of wine and talk about her lirics, with her of course. I worked with a womans shelter for 7 years and used her music as an instruntment. 47 years old and I think she is so informntivated.Anyways if she ever wants to come to the mountains, she is welcome to stay at my house.Bare bone people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful
I'm a big fan of AlanisMorisette. I think she has incredible talent. But I especially like this book because it is Mtv unplugged, so it contains the more melodic songs, and even more melodic versions of some of the greatones like "You Oughta Know". All in all, I think it is anexcellent choice for any pianist/Alanis fan. ... Read more
