Excerpt: James Thurston "Jim" Nabors (born June 12, 1930) is an American actor and singer. Born and raised in Sylacauga, Alabama, Nabors moved to Southern California due to his asthma. While working at a Santa Monica nightclub, The Horn, he was discovered by Andy Griffith and consequently joined The Andy Griffith Show, playing Gomer Pyle, a dim-witted gas station attendant. The character proved popular, and Nabors was given his own spin-off show, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Though best known for his portrayal of Gomer Pyle, Nabors became a popular guest on variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s (including two specials of his own in 1969 and 1974) after revealing a rich baritone voice. He subsequently recorded numerous albums and singles, most of them containing romantic ballads. Nabors was born to Mavis and Fred Nabors in Sylacauga, Alabama, where he sang for his high school and church. He attended the University of Alabama, where he began acting in skits. After graduating, he moved to New York, where he worked as a typist for the United Nations; after a year, he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he got his first job in the television industry as a film cutter. Due to his asthma, he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a film cutter for NBC. He moonlighted at a Santa Monica tavern, The Horn, singing and acting in cabaret theater. His act featured him as a character similar to the Gomer Pyle character he would later portray: he would sing in a baritone and sometimes his higher-pitched voices and speak in a higher-pitched voice. At the club, comedian Bill Dana saw Nabors' act and invited him to appear on The Steve Allen S...http://booksllc.net/?id=555824 ... Read more

Chapters: Bugs Bunny, Chuck Norris, Jim Nabors, Lon Chaney, Sr., Joe Rosenthal, Jack Edwards, James Harbord. Excerpt:Bugs Bunny Bugs Bunny is a fictional character who appears in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated films produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions, which became Warner Bros. Cartoons in 1945. In 2002, he was named by TV Guide as the greatest cartoon character of all time. Currently, he is the corporate mascot for Warner Brothers , especially its animated productions . Bugs starred in 163 shorts in the Golden Age of American animation, and made cameos in three others along with a few appearances in non-animated films. According to Bugs Bunny: 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare , he was "born" in 1940 in Brooklyn, New York , created by Tex Avery (who directed A Wild Hare , Bugs Bunny's debut) and Robert McKimson (who created the definitive Bugs Bunny character design), among many others. According to Mel Blanc , the character's original voice actor , Bugs Bunny has a Flatbush accent, an equal blend of the Bronx and Brooklyn dialects (of the New York Accent ). His catchphrase is a casual "Eh...what's up, doc?", usually said while chewing a carrot . His other popular phrases include "Of course you realize, this means war" and "Ain't I a stinker?". History The unnamed, prototype Warner Bros. rabbit Main article: Evolution of Bugs Bunny An unnamed rabbit bearing some of the personality, if not physical characteristics of Bugs, first appeared in the cartoon short Porky's Hare Hunt , released on April 30, 1938. Co-directed by Ben Hardaway and an uncredited Cal Dalton (who was responsible for the initial design of the rabbit), this short had a theme almost identical to that of the 1937 cartoon, Porky's Duck Hunt (directed by Tex Avery), which had introduced Daffy Du... ... Product Description
Two questions that people ask television comedy writers repeatedly are:"How do you guys ever think them up?"and "Is writing for a television show anything like it was on the old Dick Van Dyke Show?"Tales from the Script invites you inside the writing rooms and into the writers meetings for such legendary television shows as The Carol Burnett Show, Laugh-In, Mama's Family, Welcome Back Kotter, Three's Company, the variety shows of Bill Cosby and Tim Conway. You'll also be part of the planning, preparation, and production of almost all of the Bob Hope Specials, including his Christmas shows entertaining America's troops around the world. As a reader, you'll step onto the stage with the writing teams to accept "your" Emmy for "Outstanding writing in a Comedy-Variety Series."You'll also know what it feels like to be nominated, but have to sit in the audience and try to look gracious while another team steps up to accept the award. After reading Tales from the Script, you'll be able to answer for yourself whether it was anything like the old Dick Van Dyke Show or not.As to the second question - "How do you guys ever think them up?" - you'll discover...well...you'll probably discover, as most comedy writers already have, that nobody knows the answer to that question. Foreword by Jim Nabors! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comic Spermatozoa Unite!!! ***
First, no one will ever do better than Gene Perret's Comedy Writing Step-By-Step-- not even Gene.As a college-level writing teacher CWSBS is one of the few books I highly recommend each semester.Students start reading it and don't want to put it down. That's because they know the student in the next seat will steal it from them.

Tales From The Script (TFTS) has lots of lessons for those in, and aspiring to be in, the business. But it's not preachy.

More than his other books, this one is more about Gene. But every sentence does not start with "I."

Gene brings you along as an observer and confidant on the incredible worldwide ride he's had.But he's never the center of the universe.

The book holds few punches. But Gene holds no hard feelings.

This is not one of those solicited reviews Amazon reviews. This is a GREAT read that is very insightful about the creative and comedic politics of jokes (who writes them, how the jokes get chosen, how you get a spot around the writer's table and the great X factor of any show, the influence of the stars on the process).

Oh, and, it's hilarious. The book flows like one great, carefully orchestrated monologue. There's no way you're going to put it down once you start. I couldn't.The humor is a carefully woven combination of jokes he wrote for hire, jokes that nearly got him fired and new jokes that are part of the narrative.Writing a humorous book is not easy folks.Writing a book about humor is, I think, even harder. Here, Gene has done both.

This is a new perspective into the old shows that you loved.

If and when he does this as an audio book I hope he reads it in front of a live audience.Only then will us readers truly realize how carefully placed his jokes are within the flow of the story.

***Although it sounds like it, the title of this review is not for a product that will put a little fun in your love life. The title will make sense when you read page one.Comedy will make more sense after you've read Tales From The Script.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Memoir
Gene Perret, who has written the best how-to book on writing comedy ("The New Comedy Writing Step-by-Step") and who teaches remarkable e-correspondence courses on humor and joke writing, has now written a wonderful memoir of his comedy writing career.

If you are interested in the back-story of the production of popular and sometimes critically-acclaimed shows like "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In", "The Carol Burnett Show", "Three's Company," and "Welcome Back Kotter," this is the book for you.If you are interested in what it is like to be a professional comedy writer, this is the book for you.If you are interested in what such stars as Bob Hope, Carol Burnett, John Travolta, and Gabe Kaplan were like to work for, this is the book for you.If you are interested in reading fun stories well and humorously told, this is also the book for you.

Perret tells the story of how he decided on a career as a comedy writer, how he learned his craft, and how he broke into the business. He tells of his work for Slappy White, an unjustly forgotten comedian; for Phyllis Diller, as a part of her army of comedy writing "housewives" and as a writer on her television show; and of his move to Hollywood where he worked on Jim Nabors's variety show.Eventually, he worked on many shows, including "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In", "The Carol Burnett Show", "Three's Company," "Welcome Back Kotter", and "Mama's Family", sometimes as a writer, other times as a producer. From every stop in his writing career, Perret has interesting stories and insights into the business he has been a part of for so long and with such success.

Bob Hope is Perret's comedy hero, so of course there is a great deal in this book about working on Hope's television specials, including traveling with the Hope troupe into combat zones. It is obvious that this was the work and the association he cherished most. However, for the reader the special treat is the wealth of great stories Perret has to tell from his time working for Hope.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.Buy it, read it, and enjoy it. ... Read more
