4-0 out of 5 stars good book, not so great for the younger science set
I actually thought this was a DVD - so, I was shocked when it arrived and was a book! That my completely my fault for looking at DVDs so much that I overlooked the word "paperback".But, I'll keep it for our children when they are older, for sure.

Not a lot of pictures, no color, and so it's definitely a book for the parents to do stuff with bit older kids.

Book was in good shape and promptly delivered. :0)

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
As someone who loved COSMOS, NOVA, and other PBS shows on science but received zero science education in the American public school system, I found this book to be the perfect "textbook." Bill Nye, who was Carl Sagan's student at Cornell, has Sagan's talent for explaining science clearly. And Nye is even funnier.

If you were disappointed that there's no SCIENCE FOR DUMMIES book...here's what you've been looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one appeals to the inquisitive child in all of us.
In a world where kids are exposed to more pseudoscience than real science, it's refreshing to have someone like Bill Nye to present the genuine thing.Like his highly successful PBS series aimed at fourth graders(but enjoyed by hordes of science-bereft grownups), Big Blast of Science is infused with Nye's straight-forwardperspective on the universe, and his passion for the remarkable way it operates.Everything, in Nye's view, is a marvelous machination of science, from the kitchen toaster's warm convection currents, to the counterclockwise spin of water draining out of the bathtub, to the kneeling Indian girl making us ponder infinity on a box of butter. He was that geeky guy who helped you pass high school chemistry, who won the Boy Scout Pinewood Derby without too much help from his dad, who saved the frat party by fixing the cocktail blender, and gave up a respectable engineering job to teach your kids some science.Without people like him we'd be looking up h! oroscopes instead of telescopes and putting more faith in the Psychic Friends Network than the National Science Foundation. At first glance, we might assume Big Blast of Science is a book just for kids. The inimitable Science Guy, clad in his signature blue lab coat and winsome bowtie, and looking cooler than absolute zero, pops out of a flashy purple cover surrounded by whirling planets, moons, and stars. With schoolboyish sincerity, he thrusts toward us a flask from which bubbles the subtitle: "A Highly Cool Handbook for the Laws of Nature."Kids, of course, will recognize immediately his zany, Disney-ish style and easy-to-understand delivery. They'll want to try all the science experiments in the book, especially the ones that require matches, rubberbands, clothespins, and adult supervision. But be aware that this little tome will find its way into Mom's and Dad's hands after the kids have gone to bed. Not only does America's "Sultan of Science" explain physics on!a level everyone can follow, he also gently reminds us the! re's a lot about the universe we need to know -- basic stuff we should have gotten in high school but didn't because we spent too much time outlining chapters, looking up vocab words, and bubbling in answers to test questions. We don't want this to happen to our kids, and neither does Nye. The message here is clear:It's never too early or late to become science literate. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our planet, to do so.Nye assures us we can understand the familiar things -- gravity, electricity, the behavior of light -- plus the weird stuff, like entropy and quarks and the laws of thermodynamics, if we "just do it."And doing science is what Big Blast of Science is all about.Nye's advice is, grab the kids, the paper towels and cardboard tubes, baking soda, vinegar, scissors and scotch tape, lemons, drinking straws, safety pins, food coloring (no experiment should be done without food coloring!) and whatever else is laying around.Be curious, experimen! t, think about what it means, find out how the universe works. The whole idea is so deliciously simple and fun, we wonder why we didn't think of it ourselves (and why our fourth grade teachers never thought of it either). Buy this one, and know that Bill Nye won't mind if you spill lemon juice and vinegar on it.He won't care if you draw mustaches on the pictures of him or color his lab coat pink.We can tell from the way he explains things that he's an easy-going kind of guy.He won't even mind if you give this book to your kid's teachers, which you probably should.Chances are, they'll put away those monotonous worksheets and vocab lists and ask you to start saving egg cartons, popsicle sticks, 2-liter soda bottles, and leftover birthday balloons so they can do some real science in the classroom. ... My five year old wanted to study dinosaurs for her first school study...found this at the library.I've now had it for 6 weeks (the limit to renew)...and she's so sad we can't keep it longer. There are experiments for almost every concept, and they aren't only useful for dinosaurs, though they're related. We've had fun doing them, and I'm learning things I didn't know before while everything is still simple enough my five year old is getting it too.The pictures are colorful, the explanations short...only maybe 10 minutes per concept, and the experiments take very little preparation.I like it so much I'm here looking for more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ocean science is fun!
Bill Nye The Science Guy has a winner, again. This one is the Big Blue Ocean. There are twelve easy to do experiments forchildren to do. How big is the ocean? That is the first question. It is answered veryinformatively, then it is followed by a great experiment to cement the concept for hands on learners. The whole book is formatted the same way with informational side bars added. Good third and fourth grade material.

2-0 out of 5 stars not entirely accurate
I have a Ph.D. in oceanography and have taught it in colleges. I was looking at this book for clues on writing oceanography for kids. I didn't read every word but in my skimming I found two pretty bad errors. The book says gives theocean off Chile as an example of a region with very little life (WRONG! there's upwelling of nutrient-rich water there and it's an example of a region with a lot of life) and that chemosynthetic bacteria at hydrothermal vents make oxygen (NO! it's energy). The book is fun but for readers who don't know a lot of oceanography, beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out!
If your kids (and you!) love Bill Nye on TV, they'll also enjoy him in print form. Here Bill is up to his usual antics--but it's all serious science. This fun and accurate introduction to a number of aquaticconcepts is likely to "hook" kids--so be prepared to follow thisbook up with one that goes into more depth! ... Bill Nye the Science Guy's Consider the Following (REISSUE): Bill Nye the Science Guy's Consider the Following

Fun book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Cool Way To Show Science Isn't Boring, Science Teachers Are
Bill Nye is great. I got this book a few years ago in college and enjoyed it no end. It's kind of an extended take on the old "Consider The Following" segment on his PBS show, if anyone remembers that bit he'd do on there. In this book he goes one step further and answers some previously imponderable questions (my favorites dealt with astronomy and physics) and does it with that good natured "I'm a nerd but I'm a cool nerd" wit that gave him so much charm. This book walks a fine line in being nominally intended for 8th-12th graders, but it has enough going on to interest those of us who left our classroom and locker mirror days behind us in the last century. Since he wrote this about 5-6 years back, I understand Bill has reinvented himself and sort of let his show grow up along with those like myself who used to watch him back in middle school. With a little luck and some good moves, Bill could go a long way toward becoming science's ambassador to the masses. We really haven't had anyone in that job since the passing of Carl Sagan. You should go for it, Bill. You rule.

2-0 out of 5 stars Problems with the first chapter...
Ok, I haven't read this book.I've only looked at some of the content online.

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Nye.He has done an excellent job making science entertaining. So, I was surprised that in the first chapter where he explains how airplanes fly, he uses the Bernoulli principle as the primary explaination. There are a lot of subtleties in how airplanes fly and Bernoulli is certainly one of them - but the primary explanation has more to do with Newton than Bernoulli.[...]

I'm particularly surprised that Mr. Nye would use this simplistic (and mostly wrong) explanation as he is an ex-Boeing engineer and should know better! If this chapter is representative of the rest of the book, then I'm disinclined to purchase or recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Nye the Science Guy's Consider the Following.
Being an ardent fan of the TV series, " Bill Nye the Science Guy", I was delighted to discover this book.It covers many, but not all, the topics dealt with in the TV series. Each chapter begins by first posing a thought provoking question, which is then followed by an easily understood explanation of the topic, and lots of easy-to-do experiments.Bill Nye and Ian Saunders, the contributing author, understand their reading audience, and the language used, and the explanations given are appropriate to the age-level (and also to the more mature young-at-heart reader!).They give the phonetic pronunciation of new, potentially difficult Scientific words, so that the words become fun to say, rather than being a hurdle. In its soft cover, the book has the feel of a magazine, and is packed full of useful information for anyone wishing to augment their viewing fo the Educational videos. However, it is not necessary to have seen the videos to enjoy the book.As a teacher, I have found it useful to have all the experiments written out, using common household items found in the my kitchen. At the back of the book, there is a good index, glossary, and page of interesting facts about weights and measures. The tone of the book is one you would expect from Bill Nye - fun but full of good stuff. The only criticism that I have is that the illustrations are a bit disappointing. They are clear, but as my twelve year old son said, "A bit arb!", which in plain English means that they are arbitary (mediocre).I would also liked to have seen a chapter at the beginning of the book devoted wholly to the explanation of electrons, molecules and atoms.Although these are covered from time to time in subsequent chapters, it would have been good to have seen them consolidated into a chapter of their own.I am glad I have the book, I enjoyed reading it, and I will find it a useful resource in my teaching.

Product Description
Edgar Wilson "Bill" Nye (1850-1896) was a distinguished American journalist, who later became widely known as a humorist. He was also the founder and editor of the Laramie Boomerang. He adopted the name "Bill Nye" after a character in a famous poem by Bret Harte. The Boomerang was founded while Nye was the postmaster of Larmie City, Wyoming Territory. It launched him to national fame, gaining subscribers in every state and some foreign countries. Some of his works include Bill Nye's Comic History of the United States, Bill Nye and Boomerang, Bill Nye's History of England, and Bill Nye's Red Book. Late in his career, he was briefly associated with James Whitcomb Riley with whom he wrote two books. They also appeared together on the lecture circuit. He also travelled and lectured with Luther Burbank. He died of meningitis. A historical marker honoring him is located in Pierce County, Wisconsin, between the towns of Prescott and River Falls. A small monument marks his birthplace in Shirley, Maine. ... Read more
