Product Description
A well-intentioned reporter becomes a story chaser in love with the joie de vivre of one man, Pat O'Brien. Creator of the Hurricane cocktail. Original Proprietor of the world-famous Pat O'Brien's bar. Godfather of the French Quarter of New Orleans. Three decades after the Dixie Mafia robbed and shot down the O'Brien family, the author cruises in the Dove across Lake Pontchartrain to interview Pat's daughter but finds her suffering inside the family's fortressed estate. Surrounded by moral decay, addiction and unreliable sources, the author, often inebriated herself, struggles to stay focused, and be as respectful a noble savage can be. Sometimes her sarcasm and inner ramblings take control where the facts leave her stranded. Which is where her gonzo adventures begin as a storm brews in pursuit of Pat O'Brien. Hotard builds tension and suspense to a hurricaneous pitch as she follows her mission back and forth acreoss Louisiana to a confrontation as startling as it is explosive. The author's unexplainable love affair to tell this man's story and Pat's intermingling ethereal visits, egging and urging her on, keep the pages flipping, a true gambler's showdown leading to the grave. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Irish eyes are smiling...
After ordering new 2nd ed copy, I was happy to find the author did not let the traditional conventions of biography prevent her from getting this book published and out there to the public. What a terrible thing to New Orleans if this book would not have been written. Even the author herself states that if she did not pursue writing this book and fighing for it to be, then Pat O'Brien's story would never have been or ever be told. I have been to Pat O's bar several times when I visit New Orleans and Hotard's book and her upclose and personal relationship with the O'Brien's and New Orleans made me realize why I and so many others are endeared by the Crescent City and its surrounding areas. Hotard's voice is frank and her writing style, her voice, fresh. I like that when I'm wanting to know the complete story of someone else or as close to that as I can get. I've always been intrigued by New Orleans and wondered about the mystique of Pat O's bar, especially the flaming fountain, and most of the answers Hotard laid out for me in her book as well. I learned about the bar and the man behind the bar's name, in short.

Adopting a journalistic perspective, In Pursuit of Pat O'Brien is a page turner and with an insider point of view Hotard made me laugh out loud on several occasions at not only his story but what happened to her in the process of getting his story. Would like a hardback copy and more pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars intriguing portrayal of a true New Orleans -Louisiana legend
I've now read the first and second edition of Tami Hotard's book and find her voice and vision just the perfect potent concoction to satisfy anyone who's interested in learning more about the history of New Orleans, the French Quarter and particularly about Pat O'Brien, the man who created the Huricane drink, and owner of Pat O's bar in the French Quarter. We've all been there and even though I got the chance to meet the author in person at a booksigning a couple years ago out at Pat O's courtyard and bought the book for my wife as a souvenoir, I found myself picking it up on the flight back home and laughing through most of it. The parts that I wasn't laughing at were indeed the places where the author's journey took a serious twist due to the dramatic nature of Pat's life being a bar owner and a gambler, and having a quite colorful personal life to boot.

What some outsiders may not know is that Hotard had the best birdseyeview of Pat's story having grown up with the O'Brien's. As a result, I felt like I was entering into a secret world that most of us would never know, many of us take for granted, sipping a Hurricane whenever we so choose. Coming up with the Hurricane during WWII was not so easy and neither was Pat's life, having been first Irish generation born in this country to immigrant parents, but somehow he settled into American culture and literally made a name for himself. His real name was Benson O'Brine, not a serious secret as the author puts it in the beginning of her book...But there are other secrets revealed about the climate of the French Quarter and about Pat's life that really did shock me. The book certainly opens with a shocker. The reader gets to learn about when Pat was held up at gunpoint and shot in the head and left for dead by members of the Dixie Mafia....Worth mentioning, most notably about the second edition, Barbara Bennett, longtime employee of Pat O's bar writes the Foreword ....How many times have I heard her playing that piano at Pat O's....I think I can hear her now..... ... Why should politicians get to do all the lying? Yes, sports fans can spin, especially with a little help from Pat O'Brien, a guy who can convincingly expound on any game, even if he doesn't know the rules. It's not that O'Brien isn't up to speed--he's a veritable encyclopedia of sports lore--it's just that even he gets cornered sometimes and needs to get out fast.
What if a fan asks about that big trade between the Maple Leafs and the Canucks? Instead of saying "Huh?" you can sound erudite: "You know, the great thing about hockey is that it's always changing." What do you do when the office smart aleck starts blathering about that Monday Night Football game you couldn't bear to watch? Blindside him: "That was nothing compared to the fourth-quarter drive the Jets ran in 1967 against Oakland--remember?"
Hilarious, irreverent, and packed with downright useful ammunition for picking up a date or picking a fight--and perfect for anyone who wants to shoot it like one of the pros--Talkin' Sports is for every sports fan who wants to win the battle of the bull.Amazon.com Review
Finally, a book for those who think that a pitcher's ERArefers to his stand on the Equal Rights Amendment. The next time talkin the office turns to March Madness or the Fall Classic, thanks toveteran sports writer Pat O'Brien and his guide for thenot-so-sports-literate, you'll know which sport your colleagues aretalking about. According to the author, your friends will be entirelyconvinced you know your stuff as long as you say something about ateam's "returning starters," and you'll earn instant respectby muttering statements like "I wouldn't want to face Coach K inthe sweet sixteen...." This silly, irreverent book is packed witharguably useful sports information that will allow you to save facewhen the so-called sports experts start piping up, and it's ideal forthe nonfan who couldn't care less about sports but refuses to admitit--at least in public! --Lance Judd ... Product Description
This fascinating collection of over 250 old photographs of Bebington and its surrounding communities demonstrates very clearly the enormous changes that this area has seen over the last hundred years. This once busy waterfront town attracted industries that made the area world famous for its products, many of which became house-hold names, and for the novel way that some of these employers housed and supported their workers. The construction of Port Sunlight to accommodate employees of the Lever family was the most famous of these, but Bromborough Pool Village, built for the workers at Price's Candles, predated it and was probably the very first of its kind in the world. These old scenes will bring back strong memories for some and show new residents and a younger generation how their town used to look and how their predecessors spent their time, at work and at play. This unique collection of photographs, assembled by one of the area's best known local historians, embraces an area that includes Bebington and Bromborough and stretches from New Ferry and Eastham Ferry to Raby and Thornton Hough. It will delight all who would enjoy a nostalgic glimpse of this important part of "The Wirral" in an age now sadly gone. ... Product Description
For most of the first half of the twentieth century, African-Americans were excluded from Organized Baseball. But their love of the game, and their desire to play could not be denied.Despite that ban, "blackball" was being played in just about every cow pasture and field available throughout the country.Black players criss-crossed the country in Negro League games and on barnstorming tours, bringing baseball to places where the Major Leagues never dreamed of going. Many gifted athletes never got the chance to compete in the Majors, until the door was finally opened in 1947 with the signing of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby.Once given that chance to compete, African-Americans showed the country that they were deserving of the opportunity. Many became superstars, but, on the mound, only 13 African-Americans ever reached the magic plateau of twenty wins in a season. This book tells the story of those thirteen men and a few of their predecessors, the obstacles they faced, and the determination they showed to succeed. But it is a story about so much more than just baseball.Against the backdrop of their grit and determination, it reflects the story of all African-American baseball players through the creation of the Negro Leagues, the evolution of the game, and the parallel integration of baseball and America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Important History Chronicled, The Aces Saluted
This is an incredible book of historical significance, as former major league pitcher Jim "Mudcat" Grant profiles the thirteen African-Americans who won 20 or more games in Major League Baseball and ten pitchers from Negro Leagues Baseball who he feels would have achieved that feat in MLB.

Grant writes from a knowledge gained from his own experience in the pro game; he is the first African-American to reach the single-season milestone in the American League and win a World Series Game for an AL club, both achieved in 1965 with the Minnesota Twins.

The updated edition includes additional text and photos and a chronicle of Grant's visit to The White House, with Dontrelle Willis of the Detroit Tigers and former fire-balling aces, Mike Norris and Ferguson Jenkins.

The MLB season is in its opening weeks and dreams are still as fresh as the sod in the stadium outfields. Each of the pitchers in the book dreamed of diamond glory and will forever be remembered for their achievements due to Grant's meticulous work in bringing their stories to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful life stories
This book covers both the African-American Major League pitchers who have won 20 or more games in a season (the "Black Aces": 13 of them to date) and African-American pitchers from the Negro Leagues who the author thinks would have been in the "Black Aces" group (eg Satchel Paige). The lead author is Jim "Mudcat" Grant, the first AL "Black Ace" and his own experiences along with his intimate knowledge of many of the other subjects lend great authenticity and charm to the book.
It is an historical celebration of great baseball players and a reflection of trying times.I am enjoying it greatly. ... Read more

New life, new wife, new son. Who was the real Patrick O'Brien—philanderer, liar, and bully, or loving, sophisticated, indulgent father? Looking through the eyes of a child bewildered and betrayed, Sarah Pat O'Brien tells the story of her quest for her father—and for herself.
