Product Description
From a strikingly original voice in fiction comes the story of Artemis Fowl, a very unusual hero.Artemis combines the astuteness of Sherlock Holmes with the sangfroid of James Bond and the attitude of Attila the Hun. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories. These fairies are armed and they're dangerous.Artemis thinks he's got them just where he wants them, but then they stop playing by the rules . . .

Full of unexpected twists and turns, ARTEMIS FOWL opens up a riveting world of magic, mystery, and humor.Amazon.com Review
Eoin Colfer describes his new book, Artemis Fowl, as "Die Hard with fairies." He's not far wrong.

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind in history. With two trusty sidekicks in tow, he hatches a cunning plot to divest the fairyfolk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn't foolish enough to believe in all that "gold at the end of the rainbow" nonsense. Rather, he knows that the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnap one of them and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to put his plan into action, he doesn't count on the appearance of the extrasmall, pointy-eared Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaisance) Unit--and her senior officer, Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back.

Fantastic stuff from beginning to end, Artemis Fowl is a rip-roaring, 21st-century romp of the highest order. The author has let his imagination run riot by combining folklore, fantasy, and a fistful of high-tech funk in an outrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter has done for wizardry. But be warned: this is no gentle frolic, so don't be fooled by the fairy subject matter. Instead, what we have here is well-written, sophisticated, rough 'n' tumble storytelling with enough high-octane attitude to make it a seriously cool read for anyone over the age of 10. --Susan Harrison ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good concept and story ruined by sloppy writing and editing
I was really enjoying the story of the Artemis Fowl series, but I found I kept getting pulled out of it by the sloppy writing and editing. Everything from inconsistencies (in the second book there's mention of a purple gel which is described as orange on the next page), incorrect words ("Root was loosing his cool."), and an over-reliance on adjectives (although, to be fair, I suppose that might be excusable as the book's targeted at a younger audience).

I can only recommend this book if you can get past this sort of thing. I, personally, can not, and gave up on the series after the second book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn awesome.
Artemis Fowl has been presumed dead, his wife Angeline Fowl is ill to the point of madness; the Fowl criminal empire has fallen. But twelve year old Irish criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II plans change this. He's gotten his hands on a copy of the Book, the sacred text of the People. And the People are...Fairies. They are creatures that live in secret from the Humans, but cunning Artemis knows about them. Once Artemis gets the book, he knows all their secrets. When he kidnaps and holds for ransom Holly Short, a Fairy, a captain of the LEPrecon unit, he thinks he has them right where he wants them. And he almost does. Almost.

Some people have said that author Eoin Colfer tried and failed to paint a charming anti-hero. I disagree. You know why? Because he's not supposed to be an anti-hero, hell, he's not even an anti-villain, he's a flat-out villain. And a superb one at that. Really, the guy excels at Xanatos gambits and Xanatos speed chess, how awesome is that? He's affably evil, always with his vile remarks, always several steps ahead. Artemis Fowl refreshed me, and I enjoyed wondering how everything would unfold.

Eoin Colfer actually explains how hidden Elves, Goblins, Dwarfs, and the like could really exist. He doesn't claim that they're there just because they are. He properly surrounds his creations with realism and history. I must applaud him for that.

All of the Fairy characters worked very well, particularly Commander Root, Foaly the Centaur, Mulch Diggums the Dawrf (surprisingly), and of course, Holly. Root at first seemed like someone to hate, but he actually turned out to be a respectable veteran. Foaly was the sarcastic computer genius, the banter that shoots back and forth between him and Root was hilarious. Glad to see Holly wasn't some annoying typical girl character, I actually really liked her. Mulch was awesome; he's such a unique and crazy-ass kleptomaniac. A surprising amount of time is spent on him, and that's a good thing.

I really liked the character who is the closest thing Artemis has to a dad: Butler, who is his butler/bodyguard. Butler has a bit of a weird relationship with Artemis; he's had experience with kids in the form of his little sister Juliet (another character I liked), but Artemis is less like a kid he has to care for and more like his only friend. I also really liked the segments between Artemis and his mom, I thought they were very well-done and added a unique emotional depth (and sometimes tragic hilarity). Yep, a good supporting cast to help Artemis against those Fairies.

With avidly in-depth gadgets always a-flaring, Artemis Fowl is often a fast-paced book, as it's intended to be. There are a few exceptions that can bog things down, like Holly's fiasco in Italy or several of the hard to understand descriptions of Fairy tech (which sometimes employ techno-wizardy). Still, those are mere drops in the ocean. When the book works, it WORKS. Fairy technology can be hard to understand, but that's never the case for Artemis's ingenious devices. I grinned evilly when Butler was beating up Fairies, when Artemis revealed his plans snidely, when the fairies were flabbergasted by his knowledge of them, the way they were easily dealt with when they thought they were superior. Seriously, every time they think they've got something on the fiend, he just shows them what's what. Awesomeness.

One minor complaint: the Book. The rules of the Book made some major plot points a bit unbelievable, I must admit. The Book orders a lot of ridiculous thing from the Fairies. It says that Fairies aren't allowed to enter Human residence without being invited. If you disobey that rule, it's law that you have to be stripped of your magic power if you want to keep entering uninvited. I can't bring myself to believe that anyone would follow these rules. This is in bizarre and stark contrast to the otherwise believable world Eoin Colfer has created. It's pretty jarring.

I admit I initially thought I wouldn't like Artemis Fowl. I don't know why, I guess I thought it wasn't going to be my kind of thing. Maybe I didn't like the idea of a villain being the main character. Maybe not. I don't know. Whatever the case, I'm glad I read Artemis Fowl, it was fast-paced, internally consistent, smart, clever, unpredictable, ground-breaking...and really, the epilogue is just SO AWESOME!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great read for people of any age.Total escapism and pure entertainment.. Books would make some great movies

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love fantasy - You'll like this
I love fantasy. Have read and re-read Harry Potter countless times. But I am by no means unable to enjoy reading other fantasy books. I loved the Bartimaeus trilogy and then someone told me about this series and I jumped right in. This being the 1st series in the novel, was a great read. I am not giving it 5 stars. The 1st book of most series aren't necessarily the best. You get to know the basic plot and characters of the series and hopefully the following books will build on this even better. Artemis character is very very interesting. As is Butler and Holly. For those of you with active imagination, you won't find it hard to visualize the "people". It is a book about a 12 yr old but certainly not limited to readers of that age. I am excited about this series and I recommend it for people who are looking for a new fantasy series to read. This one is different from Harry Potter because half of it is set in our world with normal people. Artemis is a genius but posseses no magic or superpowers . The writing is lucid and very easy to read. The book is absorbing, couldn't stop turning the pages. Seems less emotionally intense than Harry Potter, but that's not a bad thing at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I lent this from a friend and read five times before giving it back. Equals and passes Harry Potter. Artemis and Butler are a unbreakable pair. This book is outstanding, buy it. ... Read more
