Product Description
In 1952, Jean-Paul Sartre engaged Albert Camus in a celebrated and bitter public confrontation that had wide-ranging cultural significance. This book contains the first English translation of the five texts constituting this famous philosophical quarrel. Personally animated, passionately argued, polemically focused, this confrontation was as much a personal encounter as it was a theoretical debate. Alternating between stylistic brilliance and stinging sarcasm, each draws upon their years of past involvement as former friends both to make their criticisms more pointed and their theoretical critique more challenging. At the same time, their views serve as lightning rods for the wider cultural forces of which they are partial expressions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there a third way?
Not only does this book contain the original articles that comprise one of the great intellectual debates of the last century, it also has very helpful contextual commentary by the editors.

One can substitute terrorism for Stalinism and the debate is, if you will forgive the cliche, as current as the headlines. But it most certainly is not at all like the sound bite debates of Cross Fire. Great breath and depth in the arguments of the participants - anguished arguments about the relationships betweenmeans and ends, justice and freedom; and finally personal responsibility.

Camus corectly sees Stalinism, read terrorism, an an unmitigated evil. Yet, he sought to live as neither victim nor executioner. That caused him no end of grief, especially as he confronted the Algerian situation. Nevertheless his arguments call to mind the views of the Polish and Czech dissidents in the 80s. An anti-politics, a living "as if" one were free. No crusade to eliminate evil from the earth, no war; rather a third way.

Sartre on the other hand saw Stalinism as an understandable, even necessary, response to the injustice inflicted on the wretched of the earth. His understanding of human nature, dare one use that term in discussing Sartre, was such that chioce was required in all circumstances. By this time, in Sartre's thinking, no third way was possible. If the choice is between victim or executioner, he would choose executioner.

Sartre is correct, one must choose. Camus is correct, there is a third way. Enter the debate if you dare. There is no easy exit.

Product Description
The hardcover publication of Blackbird Singing, the first collection of Paul McCartney's poems and lyrics, was an international cultural event—celebrated in concert halls, at literary festivals, and in newspapers and magazines throughout the world. "While McCartney is of a completely different cast than Bob Dylan, his appeal may be even greater than that of the latter great poet-songwriter," wrote Publishers Weekly; The Guardian hailed McCartney's words as "a remarkable feat of historical imagination." The best-selling Blackbird Singing now includes several new poems and lyrics, including "Freedom," which McCartney performed in New York City at a benefit concert last fall. To actually read McCartney's poems, whether exuberant ballads of love or poignant messages of deepest grief, is to appreciate the electrifying power of the confluence of dream and song. Inspired by his late wife, Linda McCartney, Blackbird Singing gives us extraordinary access to the inner life of one of the most influential figures of our time.Amazon.com Review
It is nearly impossible to scan any of Paul McCartney's lyrics withouthearing the Beatles' music in the background, dictating rhythm, pace, andmood. But as Blackbird Singing demonstrates, the effort is worthmaking. This first collection brings together early and late poems, alongwith some of Sir Paul's greatest hits (including the words to "Yesterday,""Lady Madonna," "Penny Lane," and "Hey Jude.") In his introduction, editorand fellow Liverpudlian Adrian Mitchell urges readers to "wash out the nameand the fame" and examine what's on the page. If you can do this, you're infor a pleasant surprise.

True, some of the lyrics appear trite on paper--"Heart of the Country"and "Mull of Kintyre" are notable offenders. Even "SergeantPepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" seems naked and frail without the rousingbrass section. But McCartney's deeper vulnerability comes to the surface in"Dinner Tickets," a poem about his childhood. And "Standing Stone" recountsa gutsy fable about a man using the power of imagination to fend off theenemy: he erects a standing stone, "a weathered finger to the sky" andlearns to be "at peace with peace." "Irish Language" boasts a rare streakof irony as the narrator admires the way "those Irish chappies" swill thelanguage around in their mouths and dribble it through their fingers. The song ends with a beautifully timed punch line: "The Beatles were a bunch ofMicks." Blackbird Singing closes with poems dedicated to the author's late wife that are tender, sparse, and startlingly honest. --Cherry Smyth ... Read more

The book arrived in perfect condition on a timely basis. I will definitely order from Amazon again!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective On McCartney's Work
Nice collection of McCartney's writings. Some of the works gathered in this anthology are actual poems Paul McCartney wrote with the intention they be read or recited, but this book also presents the lyrics to many of his most famous and beloved songs, and showcases these oft-heard sentences as poetry. What impressed me was how well so many songs stand up as poems. A nice side effect of reading this book is we can see which among the many "Lennon/McCartney" songs done during the Beatles' era were actually the product of McCartney's authorship. Some of the compositions were obvious choices, others less easy to spot and these contained a few surprises. Arguably the most famous Beatles song "All The Lonely People" (aka "Eleanor Rigby" etc.) is perhaps even more moving devoid of its musical accompaniment, simply in the stark naked form of the written word. This is a nice collection from the mind and pen of one of the foremost figures of our time, and aside from pleasing the "must have" urge in hardcore McCartney fans, this book should find favor with anyone who gives it a chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collection on a blackbird-Sir Paul, the poet.
Sir Paul McCartney as musician, songwriter, actor, producer, knight, yes.How about poet as opposed to songwriter? Most definitely, as his school teacher turned him on to Shakespeare and Chaucer. And as "Blackbird" is one of my favourite Beatles songs, I thought it appropriate a title for this collection of poetry and even songs by the Beatles, Wings, and his solo material. However, I also learned in the intro that he was inspired by a message he was giving to a black women during the civil rights movement. The song was transformed from literal to symbol, so the words changed from "Black women living in Little Rock" to "Blackbird singing in the dead of night."

The book is divided into nine thematic sections:

1.Playing at Home
2.Yesterday
3.Friends And Enemies
4.The Business
5.The World Tonight
6.All The Lonely People
7.Standing Stone
8.Home To Love
9.Nova

Sections 3 and especially 6, taken from a lyric in "Eleanor Rigby," hit home to me.Some of Nova has odes to Linda and shows how devoted a couple they were and the devastation he felt at her passing, such as "Lost" and "She Is..."

However, some poems show McCartney as social critic on the issues of nuclear war, pollution, the legal system, and public safety. In "Jerk of All Jerks", written from the point of view of the title people, he writes "I'm the man that disposes/of nuclear waste/There's no need to worry/it's perfectly safe."And he imparts great wisdom in describing the follies of going for the top is written in the refrain of "Chasing The Cherry":"And say, are you chasing the cherry?/The merry-go-round of the roses/If so, you must know/that the down side/is to sink like a ferry."And reading "Looking For Changes", on the horrors of animal experimentation really got my dander up because Sir Paul told it like it was.

And some of his poems are whimsical and amusing. In "Trouble Is", he writes "Rabbit running in circles/chasing his tail/because it looks like candy floss/Trouble is--rabbits don't eat candy floss."The punchline to this poem is funny.
Where the songs are placed in a poetry format, some of them reveal themselves when read rather than being listened to."Yesterday" for example, is one, as is "Here Today" from the Tug Of War album (1982), dedicated to John Lennon. And "The Song We Were Singing" from Flaming Pie shows Sir Paul commenting on how we all fall back to our usual selves after undergoing something deep:"Take a sip, see the world through a glass/and speculate about the cosmic solution/to the sound, blue guitars/caught up in a philosophical discussion."But alas, "we always come back to the song we were singing."

Compilation of this book was done by 60's activist/anti-war/counter culture poet Adrian Mitchell under Linda McCartney's guidance. There is also an index, and for the songs, there is a listing telling which album it's from.Helpful, that. And this book, not only reminds people that McCartney is a great songwriter but reveals his inner personality as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE YOU SIR JAMES PAUL MCCARARTNEY....LIKE A SON!
GOOD BOOK...........READ IT

5-0 out of 5 stars McCartney is a musician, but his words are pure poetry...
This book looks like very little on the surface, especially if you know by heart (or own) the lyrics to many Beatles/McCartney songs. But this anthology is more than just lyrics, because the short selection of lyrics that were edited into this are ones that look and sound like poems. Actually there are many new (and many ones I had never read) poems in here, and most are not even songs ("Mother Nature's Son", "Here, There, and Everywhere", "For No One", and "Helter Skelter" aren't to be found in this). Therefore, it is a moving collection of poignant, amusing, and insightful poetry by a master lyricist with feeling. Although Lennon may have written the most notorious Beatles compositions, McCartney proves that he was the Beatle with the gift of both words and emotion. ... Read more

Product Description

Existential and Spiritual Issues in Death Attitudes provides: an in-depth examination of death attitudes, existentialism, and spirituality and their relationships; a review of the major theoretical models; clinical applications of these models to issues such as infertility, bereavement, anxiety, and suicide; and an introduction to meaning management theory and how it can be applied to grief counseling.

In this new volume, death is treated both as a threat to meaning and as an opportunity to create meaning. The first section introduces theory and methodology to connect the latest empirical research on death attitudes to the philosophical/psychological existential and spirituality literature. Part II presents the latest empirical research on subjects such as end-of-life decisions and living with HIV. The final section considers therapeutic applications to issues including suicide, infertility, bereavement, and anxiety. The concluding chapter highlights the book’s common themes and provides questions to encourage further investigation of the most critical topics.

Psychologists, counselors, social workers, physicians, nurses, and religious leaders, as well as academics in the fields of psychology, gerontology, philosophy, religion, counseling, social work, sociology, and medicine will value this new resource. Main points summarize important ideas of each chapter, making it an appropriate text in courses on death and dying and/or and spirituality. Its clinical applications will appeal to practicing professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of existentialism, spirituality, and meaning.
Death is a very difficult subject for many of us to think about, let alone read an in-depth book about its existential meaning and the spiritual issues involved. I recently lost a dear friend, and I found the chapter, "Construction of Meaning in the Face of Mortality" by Gloria Nouel, PhD, very comforting. Although she writes about the bereavement of women who lost their children, I was able to hear Dr. Nouel's words speaking to my grief-stricken heart over the loss of a 62-year-old woman who was my self-less and kind friend. Dr. Nouel also opens the door to reflections on our relationship with loved ones after their leaving this plane of existence. This book will help you work through your grief, and learn how to create meaning when all you are feeling is meaninglessness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Literature Review of Work in Economic Psychology
I've just read the first edition of this work, "The Economic Mind", published in 1986. Even so it was worthwhile, but I'm glad to see that a new, and more up-to-date, version has been published.

The bookdiffered in two ways, I suppose, from what I'd expected. First, it waswritten mainly for psychologists who might be interested in economicsituations, rather than for economists (like me) who wanted greater insightinto the contributions of psychologists. I soon adjusted, though, andshouldn't let this put off any fellow-economists from reading the book.Second, it was almost entirely made up a literature survey. Thus, anyonelooking for a coherent, single, perspective such as that offered by--Idon't know, let's say Robert Lane's "The Market Experience"--might be disappointed in "The Economic Mind". He or she would, though, find a hundred other references to follow up here that wouldprovide this perspective and I expect, for instance, to find Lane's workintroduced in the new edition.

A final surprise was of a different kind:the editing of the first edition was quite poor, with a number ofincomplete sentences. I imagine, again, that the new edition.

Overall,I'd rate this book highly. When it first came out in 1986 it claimed to bethe only treatment of its kind. Now, in the mid '90s, its successor ismaking a similar claim. It's a mystery to me why more people haven't takenthe plunge and made use of the resources provided by "The EconomicMind" to enrich their understanding of economic psychology (or is theother way around?). ... Product Description
Employee participation encompasses the range of mechanisms used to involve the workforce in decisions at all levels of the organization--whether direct or indirect--conducted with employees or through their representatives. In its various guises, the topic of employee participation has been a recurring theme in industrial relations and human resource management. One of the problems in trying to develop any analysis of participation is that there is potentially limited overlap between these different disciplinary traditions, and scholars from diverse traditions may know relatively little of the research that has been done elsewhere. Accordingly in this book, a number of the more significant disciplinary areas are analyzed in greater depth in order to ensure that readers gain a better appreciation of what participation means from these quite different contextual perspectives.

Not only is there a range of different traditions contributing to the research and literature on the subject, there is also an extremely diverse sets of practices that congregate under the banner of participation. The handbook discusses various arguments and schools of thought about employee participation, analyzes the range of forms that participation can take in practice, and examines the way in which it meets objectives that are set for it, either by employers, trade unions, individual workers, or, indeed, the state.

In doing so, the handbook brings together leading scholars from around the world who present and discuss fundamental theories and approaches to participation in organization as well as their connection to broader political forces. These selections address the changing contexts of employee participation, different cultural/ institutional models, old/'new' economy models, shifting social and political patterns, and the correspondence between industrial and political democracy and participation.

About the Series
Oxford Handbooks in Business & Management bring together the world's leading scholars on the subject to discuss current research and the latest thinking in a range of interrelated topics including Strategy, Organizational Behavior, Public Management, International Business, and many others. Containing completely new essays with extensive referencing to further reading and key ideas, the volumes, in hardback or paperback, serve as both a thorough introduction to a topic and a useful desk reference for scholars and advanced students alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful artistry, good stories, a fantastic collection!
From the moment I saw the cover art I knew this was going to be good, and upon cracking open the pages I was not disappointed!

Cover art:
Front: Well, you can see this for yourself, but it's a lovely still of Ten (as portrayed by David Tennant) and Martha standing in the whispering gallery.Wonderfully detailed and watercolor-esque, with the nu-Who logo and "THROUGH TIME AND SPACE" at the bottom.
Back:Stone brown background with delicate Gallifreyan circular design. The background is a matte finish while the design stands out and is smooth - very beautiful!Has short descriptions of each story.

The Whispering Gallery:
Art: A mixture of pencil, watercolor, computer, and photorealism (esp. the TARDIS).Close-ups are beautifully-detailed pencil/watercolor with quite a bit of work put into them. Background drawings are a bit more loose and cartoony, creating an interesting dichotomy that takes a few minutes to get used to but definitely adds to the enjoyment (though it does clash just a little bit with the somber storyline).
Story: Ten and Martha. The Doctor returns to the home planet of a previous companion to discover a society who never show any emotions.Easily the strongest story of the book and quintessentially Doctor Who: The companion (in this case, Martha) learns about an alien culture but can't help injecting her human heart into things, the Doctor must play Sherlock Holmes to discover what is causing all the pain and suffering for these people, there's a big beastie baddie, a chase, and a clever resolution (if a big hurried).

Art: Not as big of a fan of this style, but it does lend to the grittiness of Victorian England.A bit more solid and blocky.
Story:Just Ten, no companion (unless you count HG Wells). The TARDIS is in need of a refueling, but Cardiff is a bit far away, so the Doctor enlists the help of Mr. Wells. That is, until Torchwood shows up.Similar to the Shakespeare Code in character interaction and plot.Entertaining, but not ground-breaking.

Autopia:
Art: Mix of computer and traditional comic book.Less abrasive than "The Time Machination", not as elegant as "The Whispering Gallery".
Story: Ten and Donna. The TARDIS lands on a planet whose inhabitants have perfected everything. This comes at a price, of course, and quickly the Doctor and Donna discover that they've been enslaving a robot species who are too human for comfort.A bit of a "be careful what you wish for" tale with a slightly silly ending that is fun and pretty much classic Donna.

Cold-Blooded War:
Art: Similar to "The Time Machination", blocky and solid but with a bit more shading to it.
Story: Ten and Donna.By a twist of fate, a woman has become the ruler of a highly-patriarchal race, causing civil unrest and violent factions. The story itself is a welcome one, but the execution could have been better. It almost literally beats you over the head with the message, and the comparison to Islamic societies is an incredibly obvious one that I could have done without (Donna even mentions burqas at one point). That said, I like everything BUT the execution. The characters are wonderful, especially the little imprisoned girl Agita, and there is plenty of action.I could have seen this as an actual episode, were it not for the heavy-handedness of the moral message.

Room with a Deja-View:
Art: More photorealistic than 2 and 4, detailed with rich color and shading. The way David Tennant's lips are drawn at times (with solid outlines), though, is very distracting and stops me from 100% loving the art.
Story: Just Ten.Okay, this is a difficult one.The TARDIS receives a distress call, and bored out of his mind, the Doctor answers. He discovers an alien being about to be executed for murder, but they're having a bit of trouble interrogating the suspect. Why?Well, this alien lives his life backwards.Literally.Not like Benjamin Button... his life is literally in reverse, like playing a movie on rewind. The Doctor has to pull a similar trick as in "Blink" to be able to understand a conversation whose end is its beginning, and the frames are written from the perspective of the alien (meaning the conversation ends at the beginning so you have to find the page where the conversation starts from the perspective of the alien and work your way backwards). The result is a LOT of work and confusion for very, very little payoff.I understood it the first time through, but didn't think it was a good way to approach this (though it was VERY clever).

Black Death White Life:
Art: More realism, mix of traditional comic book, computer, and a touch of watercolor, especially on skin tones which is a nice effect.
Story: Ten and Martha. The TARDIS accidentally lands in 1669 while on the way to a Beatles concert. The Doctor and Martha find themselves smack dab in the middle of the Black Plague. While Martha aids the sick, the Doctor discovers the church have themselves a healing angel... but not one of this heaven or Earth.Another classic Doctor Who tale, with aliens injected in historical Earth fact and lore, action, compassion, and a touch of humor, making this a solid addition to the collection and a possible good source for a future episode.

Miscellaneous: Includes seven full-page photographs and illustrated stills of David Tennant as the Doctor along with Martha or Donna.

Overall, this is a must buy for any Doctor Who fan!

3-0 out of 5 stars An uneven collection of one-shots
THROUGH TIME AND SPACE collects six original Doctor Who comics from IDW, and while it's nice to have these under one cover, it makes me wonder how a couple of them were considered worthy of individual release. The basic plots could all work well as episodes of the TV series, but the execution varies widely.

I feel that "The Whispering Gallery" is easily the best story here, made all the more amazing by the fact that it's written by Leah Moore and John Reppion (whose work I normally avoid).I'm not a fan of Ben Templesmith's art, but the story easily makes up for it.

"The Time Machination" provides an interesting link between HG Wells and the 10th Doctor, even tying into earlier incarnations.Paul Grist, of Jack Staff fame, provides the art, and I'd love to see more from him.

"Autopia", written by John Ostrander, is a decent tale of man vs. machine with a fun ending.

"Cold-Blooded Cold War" is a mediocre bit of political intrigue involving the Draconians and Ice Warriors.Adrian Salmon's heavy, nondescript artwork kicks it down another notch.

"Just a Theory" is the worst of the bunch, in which a being in a reverse timeline commits a murder... or does he?It's an interesting concept that was not handled well and only served to confuse. After three reads, I still don't understand it.

"Black Death", set during the plague years of the 14th century, is a neat tale from Charlie Kirchoff with great art from Tom Mandrake. It's a good way to end the book.

Overall, I'm impressed with the Doctor Who material coming from IDW and look forward to more, provided that they'll take more care with the selection of writers and artists. Now if we could only get more stories featuring The Doctor's other incarnations...

Product Description
Sue Townsend was Britain's best-selling author of the 80s with her hilarious creation, Adrian Mole's diaries. Her novels are still highly successful, with Adrian continuing to suffer trials and tribulations galore. It's 1997. Adrian, 30, is a chef at an up-market restaurant, selling down-market food for ridiculous prices. There, the only person who seems to notice he can't cook is AA Gill. But problems abound when, in a fit of madness, he agrees to become a TV chef on the show Offally Good. Yet some things don't change. Adrian's still profoundly in love with Pandora, now an MP; his parents' marriage is in trouble; and Sharon Bott, spectre of the past, returns to haunt the traumatised Adrian, who has enough on his plate as it is. ...
