Product Description
The legendary Harry Greb stepped into the ring more than 300 times from 1913 to 1926, defeated opponents who outweighed him by more than 30 pounds, held the middleweight and light heavyweight titles and beat every Hall of Fame boxer he ever fought. Dubbed "the Pittsburgh Windmill" because of his manic, freewheeling style in the ring, Greb also crossed racial lines, taking on all comers regardless of color. An injury in the ring led to Greb's gradually going blind in one eye and should have ended his career, but he kept his condition secret and fought on. Tragically, the indomitable fighter would be dead by the age of 32, felled by complications during minor surgery. This biography of one of the toughest boxers of all time includes interviews, family recollections, modern doctors' analyses of Greb's eye injury and more than 120 rare photographs, as well as a complete fight record and round-by-round descriptions of his most famous fights. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The fearless Harry Greb
Wow !!! Being a lifetime boxing fan I knew "of" the great fighter Harry Greb, but after reading this excellently written and researched biography I now have the knowledge that backs up the truth about the man's greatness as a boxer, and the truth behind the legendary stories that surrounded his life. This man was, and is to this day, in a class by himself. The remarkable endurance and fighting record Greb left behind could well be second to none. There is much to be said about the argument that the ring fighters of our modern day are better than those "old-timers" were, and it may well be the case as we have far greater knowledge about physical conditioning, nutrition, and training methods than the fighters of old had at their disposal. But there may never have been a boxer with the remarkable talent that Harry Greb possessed. Anyone that has ever trained to box and set foot inside a ring would be in awe of this man's recorded boxing history, it's a true superman story, actually hard to believe at times.A must read about one of the most remarkable, and tragic athletic lives ever lived.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth not as interesting as Fiction
I enjoyed this book but mainly because it is on a subject I had a great interest in.The author has gone to a lot of trouble to stick to the facts, dipel myths and present the story in a logical chronological sequence.Unfortunately this is also the books greatest fault. Part of the great mystique of Harry Greb is the tall tales and humorous anecdotes that grew around him.By avoiding these in favour of sticking to the verfiable facts the book lacks the humour and enigma it might have had.Other than that I have no complaints and have no hesitation in recommending the book to anyone interested in this golden age of boxing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Boxing Bio, EVER

I've waited for a bio on Harry Greb for as long as I can remember. Bill Paxton's book ranks right up there with The Sweet Science as THE top two books on this sport.

It has wonderful insights into other fine pugilists of Greb's time - Dempsey, Tunney, Flowers, Loughran, Leonard, Walker. It captures Greb as an iron man, battling over 300 times and seeking all comers at any weight. The greatest boxer in history. And it touches upon the historical arenas and stadiums and the handlers, writers and fans of that golden age - with rare photos of Greb, his family and many boxers.

When my wife, Claudia bought it for me, I couldn't put it down.

Clearly, a five star rating!

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
My only credentials are that I'm a huge sports history guy and I've read a lot of sports history books. This one ranks right up there with the best. The detail was amazing - I mean round by round stuff from the teens and 20's?!Mr. Paxton obviously researched the heck out of this, and his passion for the subject comes pouring out on every page. You get to know Greb as a person as well as a fighter.I just had a great time reading this book.Well done!
By the way, I'd love to see a biography on Kid McCoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars SOLID

Long sought after bio on an amazing character and boxer.Very solid performance as well as extremely well researched.Good view into turn of the century boxing and what that sport once meant to America, and during the narration, a fine glimpse into an America long gone.In short, accurate and entertaining. There are no more Grebs! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "Wonderful . . . "
This is a wonderful primer on how NOT to write . . . and how NOT to draw portraits. Otherwise, I mourn the sacrifice of a tree to print this tedious book.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's great if you wish to learn only about graphology...
Holmes on the other hand, is treated like, "Oh, yeah, better mention him once in a while!" I have no doubt of Mr. Paxton's credentials in the field of graphology. But even the fact that my copy is personally signed by the author (not to me, which tells you that the person he did sign it for didn't keep it) doesn't make it of much value. It's a curiosity, nothing more. A little less graphology and more writing would have made a credible story. Quoth the Raven, droping a black feather...

1-0 out of 5 stars Un-Sherlockian
This book was a complete disappointment. It is apparently self-published and self-edited and the errors in grammar and continuity fairly scream off the page. The author fails to capture Victorian England of 1896 by making several errors of historical fact. Most distressing of all is the total failure to capture the characters of Holmes and Watson in the style that Conan Doyle created them. The personalities are all wrong and the dialogue completely misses the mark.
If you are ready to move beyond Doyle's canon this is NOT the tome you wish to peruse. There are too many other excellent Holmes collections available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money !
This book is nowhere close to the style of Doyle or other Holmes authors. It is a self-published (and poorly self-edited) ego trip by Paxton so he could expound his theories of graphology, of which he claims to be an expert, and his personal family history. His used his wife as "illustrator" (see cover for her style, does that look like Holmes ?) and he probably wrote off a trip to Europe as "research". His writing style is atrocious (eg: Holmes starts 3 sentences in a row, in the same paragraph, with: "I have been..."
He completely fails to capture the Holmes style and instead lulls his readers into disinterest with long, boring dissertations and completely unrealistic dialogue.
This is about as phony a Holmes volume as ever hit the market. Try John Dickson Carr or Nicolas Meyer if you're ready to expand beyond Doyle's original canon. ... Read more

Product Description
Bill Paxton knew he wanted to be a marine the day his family buried his dad, a marine who had been killed while fighting the Japanese during the Pacific campaign of World War II. His drill instructor in boot camp had a significant impact on him and would later be the focus of the movie The DI. His early years in the marines formed the basis for his successful career; he twice served as a drill instructor and had two tours of duty in Vietnam as a grunt. His impact on all who he came in contact with was evident in the drive that pushed Ken Norton, his former recruit, to become the Boxing Heavyweight Champion of the World. Paxton received the Bronze Star for heroic actions in Vietnam and was also awarded several Purple Heart Medals for wounds he received in battle. Having achieved the rank of sergeant major, he retired from active duty after thirty years; still, he proudly says, "Retired, but still active!" He has become an icon in the marines and is one of the most well-known marines in the San Diego area. ... Read more
