5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME
I have Dr. Roberts as a proffesor and i have to say that this book is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars needed and will keep
i needed this book for an English-Sci Fi class.I'm going to keep it so i can finish all the stories.it is a great collection with background info on the authors as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to the World of Fantasy/Sci-Fi Short Stories
I picked this book up as the required text for a course on Fantasy and Science Fiction.Although I have enjoyed science fiction and fantasy for many years, I had really only experienced some major works, such as the Dune series, the Lord of the Rings, Heinlein's Starship Troopers and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and Foundation, and I had never really read any short fiction from these genres apart from Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu."

However, once I got into this book, I found a whole new world of storytelling.Within a few days, I had acquired the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe and begun reading through those. Thanks to Project Gutenburg, I've been finding more short stories from the various authors in this book, and I have fallen in love with the short stories "Arena" and "The Colour Out of Space."This volume contains an excellent cross-section of fantastic works spanning many years and many subgenres, with the crowning jewel of the text being Edgar Rice Burrough's first novel, A Princess of Mars, printed in its entirety, and finished in one sitting, something I hadn't done in years.

For a young reader interested in expanding his horizons, this is an excellent work that will direct him in a variety of directions. For someone like me, who reads a large number of relatively dry texts, this book contains enough in the way of short stories that one can go several years alternating between the dry texts and the vivid worlds the authors present. The price is high, but the cost is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars so many stories, so little time
i came across this book in my hs sci fi english class and it was definately the best book i ever came across in school. the stories are seperated by type, starting with classic archeotypes and includes high fantasy and other categories i cant remember. it was the only book i leisurely read outside of school and i had trouble parting with it at the end of the semester. it is also one of the only books that i would pay $70 for.

4-0 out of 5 stars as workable an SF/F anthology as we're likely to get
As the editor notes, one could argue endlessly about precisely what stories to include in an SF/F anthology, and in such an argument I would doubtless have chosen several different stories than he has. However, I also would have chosen many of the *same* stories he has, and perhaps that's a primary reason that I like this book. It's reasonably well-rounded, effectively organized, and includes a wide selection of stories while avoiding the trap that so many other literary anthologies fall into, that of trying to please so many different tastes that ultimately no one is satisfied.

The critical apparatus in the book is mercifully minimal, given that I found many of the editor's critical conclusions very questionable (for example, that _Star Wars_ is a film version of Edgar Rice Burrough's _A Princess of Mars_.)

On the whole, this is an extremely useful volume (if rather pricey) well suited for use in a class on fantastic literature or simply for pleasure reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Traditional microeconomic theory has much to offer a manager. It suggests ways to increase profits by setting prices and packaging services, using advertising to increase demand and shows how internet auction sites like eBay affect competition and profitability. By using game theory to present and solve a manager’s decision-making problems and by focusing on the strategic nature of these problems, this text makes microeconomic theory much more intuitive and relevant for the business student.

The text is separated into four sections:

  • basic microeconomic theory of the firm and the basic tools of game theory
  • problems related to the strategic interaction between firms, including price and quantity competition and product differentiation
  • issues arising from strategic interactions within the firm, including vertical and horizontal integration, training and motivating workers, and labour unions
  • marketing economics including information problems, advertising, durable goods and the product life cycle.

This book will be suitable for any student with a background of introductory economics. The authors include a variety of international examples and case studies from the business world to expand and illustrate key concepts, and provide end-of-chapter exercises to test students’ grasp of the material. An online supplement comprising of problems and solutions as well as PowerPoint slides is available for lecturers.

If you are a UT student in need of a Foundations Management 320F book, do not purchase the 8th edition! This will be outdated. Make sure to take extra precaution in purchasing a text for this book and pay attention to the edition. I'm taking the class this spring of '09 and the 10th edition was required. Product Description
The single most important task of an Oracle DBA is ensuring the integrity and recoverability of the database. This requires a thorough understanding of backup and recovery concepts as well as the details of the various methods of performing backups and restoring the database or portions of it. In early versions of the Oracle database, the choice of tools provided by Oracle was relatively limited, but with Oracle 9i, the Recovery Manager (RMAN) provides a powerful and flexible tool to manage the availability and recoverability of the database. The earlier tools, including Export and Import, are still present and play an important role in any comprehensive backup and recovery plan. This book is a quick reference guide to Oracle DBA backup and recovery that provides complete coverage of all key concepts and tools. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Memory Aid
If you are an Oracle database administrator and you have a background as a unix or Microsoft sysadmin, then you might wonder why there is a need for an ENTIRE book on backup of Oracle's database. It is not that you doubt the need for a backup. But a whole book? In unix, you do a "man" on the backup command and you are shown a few screens of options. Likewise for restoring. Under Microsoft, a similar situation prevails. But unix and Microsoft are general purpose operating systems. An operating system is basically about file manipulation. In essence, a file is the atomic unit to the OS. So the backup and restore options are limited to the richness of this information.

But Oracle's database is a specialised and elaborate "operating system". The data is constrained and structured far more than files in a real OS. A backup can take advantage of this by offering hugely more options to you; a far more expressive set of commands to do a fine grained backup of fairly arbitrary subsets of the data. And of course, also with the restore.

This increased power comes at a price. Remembering all those darned options, especially the obscure, rarely invoked ones. Hence this book. Its value is strictly as a memory aid. You have to already understand what those options do, from Oracle's official documentation. The book uses a common flow chart style graph for the options, for easier use. ... Read more
