Outstanding True Story
This is a very loving story about two brave and courageous people who inspired the world with the way they lived.

sad story but lots of love
This book leaves the reader with a warm feeling despite the tragedies it is about.Chris and Dana Reeve thrived despite terrible obstacles because they had so much love, both within themselves and from others.I would not say it is a "remarkable" love story because I think most spouses would hang in there and try to help their loved one in such a situation, though few would have anywhere near the financial resources or love and support of so many around the world like the Reeves did. Chris Reeve became a spokesman for the disabled, an icon in their court. The disabled in this country are often viewed in negative ways, people don't understand how much they suffer nor do they see how much they can love and how valuable they are as people, whether they can work and contribute to the GNP or not.Chris and Dana Reeve helped change that, and that is something that needs to change.Everyone has a right to be valued for who they are and what they can give to others.But some things in this book are disconcerting.I would have liked to see more exploration into why Chris Reeve could not accept not being able to walk.One of the things the book fails to tell is that a lot of quadraplegics really were not happy with his refusal to accept it.I think, from what little the book said about such things, that he just had an issue with not being able to fail, and so he was driven.The sad thing is that when he had some feeling come back, he was disappointed because he still couldn't walk.I think the little victories would have meant more if he could have accepted it.The other thing is the enormous cost of all the therapies to prepare him to walk again.His insurance company paid for a lot of it. Is this the best way to spend limited funds when there are people in this country who have no health care at all- pursuing fantasies?The book also fails to mention that his friend Robin Williams also paid for a lot of it for him.A few references were made to Chris saying he had to keep working to pay the bills.This can give the wrong impression - that we should expect quadraplegics to keep working somehow to pay for their own health care.In this way he did a disservice to the disabled population.I also was disappointed that Dana's tragic battle with lung cancer and death was told in comparatively few pages, almost like an afterthought. I also think the book failed to show the dark side more.A brief reference was made to Chris sometimes being "depressed and moody" but the reader for the most part gets to see only the bright side.I would have liked a more well-rounded picture of Dana and Chris.I think they both held a lot in to put on a good show, as one might have expected from actors, because the whole world was watching.In that way, having to tuck in their feelings and carry on, I think they suffered a lot too, but none of that was in the book. Their was a brief reference to Dana saying they both should see therapists. So they must have had a lot going on that they couldn't show the world.It was a disservice to the reader - and to them - not to show the whole picture.I also wonder what happened to the horse, Buck, that stopped short on him?They said he was going to be sold but nothing about whether anyone ever bought him.Maybe the horse was just doing what he had to do in a cosmic sense - set Chris Reeve on the journey that would do the world so much good.After all that is what Superman is all about - selflessly doing good for others.

This was one of the best biographies I ever read...
This is a biography of love.If you are a romantic girl or guy you will appreciate this.Chris Andersen is a really good writer, if not the best there is.He captured very intelligent and true Chris and Dana Reeve love story and struggles with a bad luck horse ride accident.They gone through hell after the accident but they did the best they can.You cannot help admiring them and feeling for them a deep empathy(such a rare feeling these days).I read the book in a heart beat, in a couple of days, because it was very well written, captivating and emotional.Superman is in heaven now.I bet he is in a very good place...even he did not believe in God.. ... I'd recommend this story to anyone, disabled or not
I think in the first one he was telling a story and leaving it to us to draw our own conclusions, but I'm disabled and the main reason I spent money that I can't easily replace on this was 1) because it's nice to give to something that I know is good and 2) to find out what coping mechanisms helped him through tough times, and Christopher is probably the best example of a person who would need some effective coping mechanisms.....I'm only 1/2 way through it and I'm already recommending this story to people; his insights are very valuable.

A great book from a great man
I got a chance to get this book as well as the first one , 'still me' and i read both books from cover to cover. They made me laugh, cry, and took mental notes for my own life. Especially Nothing is Impossible. This book had me taking a look at my own life and at my life as a mother of a disabled child. I grew up from a toddler to an adult on Mr.Reeve's work. Cinema and Theater and took so much from that to apply in life and now with this wonderful book he wrote before his untimely death, I will take so much of it and apply it as well. I constantly think of certain passages and chapters when a situation arises in my day to day existence. I wish I got a chance to read both books when he was still alive, so I could write him and tell him thank you being a superman in real life as he was in his movies. And thank you for writing two wonderful books in which he shared his personal thoughts and memories and experiences with the world. I know he and his wife are so proud of the fact that Christopher and Dana Reeve act was passed and will help those who still are able to benefit from it. Again a great book, that I can read over and over. I recommend Nothing is Impossible as well as Still Me.

Inspiration
I just got this book, and I must say it really gives me pause-sometimes i think I am having a bad day, but it is nothing compared to what he went through on a daily basis just to survive, and was still able to make a good life for himself.I love the quote that for the healthy paralysis is a choice, because it feels that way with me sometimes.I wish he had lived long enough for a cure, but I am glad he was able to express himself so well.

What a Superman Christopher Reeves turned out to be!
Christopher Reeves will continue to be an inspirtion to all of us, and will influence other genertions with his insight, and courge, of trying to make the public more aware of Spinal Cord Injuries.
He was indeed, a 'real Superman!'

God I miss this man.
I just reread this book, and it brought back how much I admired Mr. Reeve and his bride.I really think this should be required reading to anyone that has had a spinal injury, or an amputation, just to show them that they are NOT the first to feel all these negitive feelings.

When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked 'What is a hero?'  I remember the glib response I repeated so many times.  My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences--a soldier who crawls out of a foxhole to drag an injured buddy to safety.  And I also meant individuals who are slightly larger than life: Houdini and Lindbergh, John Wayne, JFK, and Joe DiMaggio.  Now my definition is completely different.  I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles: a fifteen-year-old boy who landed on his head while wrestling with his brother, leaving him barely able to swallow or speak; Travis Roy, paralyzed in the first thirty seconds of a hockey game in his freshman year at college.  These are real heroes, and so are the families and friends who have stood by them."

The whole world held its breath when Christopher Reeve struggled for life on Memorial Day, 1995.  On the third jump of a riding competition, Reeve was thrown headfirst from his horse in an accident that broke his neck and left him unable to move or breathe.

In the years since then, Reeve has not only survived, but has fought for himself, for his family, and for the hundreds of thousands of people with spinal cord injuries in the United States and around the world.  And he has written Still Me, the heartbreaking, funny, courageous, and hopeful story of his life.

This is a wonderful book
When I first began to read this book, I didn't realize how deep it would draw me in. But before the end of the first chapter, I was swept deep into it and feel all the emotions that Christopher Reeve felt. I could see myself there as I was looking in at his life and experiences. It was also such a treat to know how he felt when he came across a little movie titled Superman and how he felt about the sequels after it. It was a great thing to know how he felt about Somewhere in Time also. My mother was a teen when she had me and she has been and always will be a Christopher Reeve fan and raised me as one. I was 4 when I first got to see him in the theaters as Superman (the first movie) and then she saw Somewhere in Time, he favorite movie out of all his work. And to know that was one of his faves as well, was something I had to tell her. But the way he talked about the loves of his life, his wife Dana and his three children, was something special. And I felt honored to be one of the readers he shared this with.

Like I mentioned in the review I gave for Nothing is Impossible, I am a parent of a disabled child and I appauld Mr. Reeve for fighting for all disabled citizenswhen he was still here (including my child). We are all(family of those disabled as well as the individuals who are disabled) are still fighting for their rights every day and was and will always be thankful that he was in our corner and still is as he and his lovely wife are looking down at us.

Still Great
This is a book I keep by my bedside and read over and over again.Can you imagine being an avid sportsman, sailor, horseman, actor, husband and father and ending up living in a chair breathing from a tube?He made a deal with his wife to keep on living for two years and then decide together whether to commit suicide.What a great man with a great story and tremendous writing talent.Rest in peace.

Poignant
I am almost done with this, and I can honestly say I developed a lot of empathy of what it must be like to have your life as you know it taken from you in a flash.He recounts his daily struggles and attempts to stay in show business very well, and his accounts of what he had to go through every day made me feel sorry for him.His accounts of his early days of an actor were a little boring, but were probably put in there for his true fans.I am sorry he passed, he seemed like a decent person who did not deserve his fate, and he makes an inspiring case for dealing with our struggles, rather than shying away from them.

This should be required reading!
At the risk of sounding dramatic, I can honestly say that this book
changed the way I see the world. It was my first formal introduction
to the disability rights movement, and more profoundly, to the social
model of disability.

I consider myself a liberal, and civil rights have always been at the
top of the list of issues important to me. Unsurprisingly (but still
appallingly), I'd never really thought about disability rights. I had
always just believed the medical model, because that's how disability
had always been presented to me. I ran across this book by chance, and
more or less decided to read it because the title intrigued me. The
case against disability rights? Who's against the disabled?

Chapter by chapter, Make Them Go Away reversed the way I think.
Mary Johnson combines history, anecdotes, and quotes from other people
to weave several convincing arguments that broke down everything I
thought I knew about disability. I started it knowingnothing about
disability rights, and by the time I finished it I had resolved to
become an advocate for the issue. I have been trying to tell other
people what I learned from it, but the book is so well-crafted, so
effective, that I just can't put it into my own words. I can only
recommend that people read it for themselves.

Despite being an excellent introduction to disability rights, Make
Them Go Away is not a textbook, and is definitely biased in the
direction of the social model. But I don't think that's bad at all. On
the contrary, I think it's exactly what the average person needs in
order to wake up to the reality of the marginalization of millions of
people.

I Won't Go Away!
Quick! Who made the following comment:

"I think it's important to realize that treating all disabled
people as equal--with equal rights and responsibilities--is absurd.
Many of the patients that come through any rehab hospital are there
because of their own ignorance, negligence, stupidity or criminal activities."

A member of a supremacist group? Nope. It was Dr. Kenneth Lefebre
at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. How about this?

"The legal requirement that 'the handicapped' be 'mainstreamed'
is damaging to 'the normal child'."

That was written by Eileen Gardner, appointee to the Reagan
Education Department, in one of her policy papers.

One more, and this one is the real shocker because the
commentator has a disability herself:

"Deny as we may want to, at the point when a person can not be
totally independent physically from others, one is no longer
equal in body. I do not want to be treated equally. I can still
think, but for the life of me I can't think of a way to get rid
of the wheelchair. Therefore, I am not on the same ground I used
to be on. To me that makes my way not equal...How can we bury our
heads so deep and say we are equal to the able bodies around us?
We are not. That's why it is called a handicap, because it is."

Comments like these only bolster the viewpoint Mary Johnson is
fighting against in her perception-shattering book, "Make Them
Go Away: The Case Against Disability Rights". She argues that
people with disabilities are a minority just as women and people
of color are nowadays. Disability, she posits, is a social and
cultural idea, and not merely a "medical problem".

Because people are perceived to be disabled, they are perceived
by society to be unable, incapable of doing much for themselves
or others. Johnson theorizes that the case against disability
rights is strong right now because of this philosophy. It is
also strong because "a disabled person's role in society was
not to criticize it from a minority perspective--for they were
not a true minority--but to work at becoming normal, to be
rehabilitated if not cured."

That, and there have been several lawsuits about the ADA, or
Americans with Disabilities Act. Nobody likes lawsuits, so...

...no wonder most of society still thinks, "Make Them Go Away"!

God Bless America the Ignorance lives on
This book describes what has been happening for years centuries.As an EEO specialist I know my rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should protect my rights at the Federal Level.The ADA Act is suppose to protect me at the local level and it does not.I do believe that EVERYONE has rights in this country our rights are comprised every day.As I read the other reviews I noticed Tomthumbguy believes the Civil Rights Moment 60s is not the same I beg to differ. Disabled people like African Americans in the 1960's are still not allowed to eat , shop, go to the movies, travel and live in certain places because there is limited accessibility or people just don't want us there.If I am not mistaken does that not sound like the segregated south from the 1700s until maybe 30 years ago.Also, let's keep in mind disabled people come from all walks of life and ethnicities.That included African Americans.

Glad this book makes people think.
I have not completely read this book.But I am glad that it is making people think.To the reviewer who is up set with this book...I am white so I have no reference for what it is like for African Americans.However, I am disabled and I too would like to be able to go to the same places that everyone else does.

Good book with some serious questions
I too personally have experienced what Mary Johnson documents in her well-researched work.

Social antipathy against people with disabilities is so mainstreamed in America that progressive activists who rush to condemn other forms of bigotry, engage in bigotry against people with disabilities. We are time and/or money consuming entities that are still honestly not perceived as contributing anything to society let alone being recognized as social equals.

This inequality then leads people to interpret the ADA as a burden on them as opposed to considering the greater burdens which unjust discrimination places on both the recipient and the nation.

However, I have one minor suggestion to ensure that this book gets to those most needing to read it.

Change the title to more accurately reflect that this book is a critique of how society handles disability instead of something itself which opposes the disability rights movement. Because the disability rights movement is acknowledged as seeking liberation of stereotypical attitudes and laws, it aids Mary Johnson's case.

Very Inspirational!!
I love reading this book to my nieces and nephews it teaches great principles and also having all the fun of the Dewey character. What an amazing book and story!!!

Awesome Series
My son loves this series.He has 4 book in the series.He loves to listen to them in the car.The books are great because they carry a good message with them.I would highly recommend these books!This one is by far his favorite.I don't know if that is because it was his first one or not, but he seems to like this one best. Very Cute book!

One of my son's favorites!
We received this book as a gift.I was concerned that it would be too advanced for my 2 year old son, however, from the first time we read it he was engrossed.It teaches him wonderful values using lovable characters that he can relate to - a superb teaching tool!

Mom of 3 loves this book!
I am constantly looking for good books for my three young boys.It isn't too difficult to find children's books that are entertaining, but if you're looking for anything beyond that to educate or even inspire your kids, most books fall flat.However, I was totally blown away by "Dewey Doo-it Helps Owlie Fly Again".This book has it all: entertaining characters, beautiful illustrations, an inspirational story, and even a *Bonus Music CD* with some great music.Oh, and to top it all off, a portion of the book's profits go to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation.I highly recommend that you get this book for your kids!My boys love it!

Of warm hearts and caring thoughts.....
I read this book in 2000 and I was both inspired and touched by it.
I began writing to the Reeves shortly after Chris had his
riding accident, and I never stopped.
Chris and Dana were two of the most caring and enduring people
in the world.Now that they are both gone,this book serves as a tribute of sort to both of them.They have left a legacy of love,
kindness,and family values for everyone to remember and reflect upon.
For anyone who needs any amount of inspiration and uplifting of
spirit,simply get a copy of this book.

I think most people today have become bitter and cold.Not bothering to take the time to even say 'good morning,' in most cases.You are lucky to get someone (today) to even nod their head with a good morning gesture.It is nice to discover that there are a few people still left in the world today who are polite enough to send someone like 'Superman,' a warm and heartfelt good luck wish!

I think this is a charming and insightful collection, and I feel not the least bit silly spending money on it.Christopher Reeve is one of my heroes, and I wrote e-mail to him via a website not long after hisaccident.I'm gratified and warmed to see how many other people didsomething similar.

Chris Reeve is an inspiration to young and old.
I first met Chris in Atlanta in 1994 and was struck by his grace and incredible presence. I saw him again at a private party following his star ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 15, 1997. The Reeve familyare a fine example of the true meaning of "family". Meeting themand being involved with fund-raising and Superman events has changed mylife. I exchanged this wonderful, touching book with my little Supermanbuddy, Joey, on Thanksgiving day. This 8-year-old boy is the biggestSuperman fan I know. We took a photo together in our Superman shirts withour books and many of Joey's Superman collectibles. I mailed the photo,along with Joey's special letter and gift for Chris, to the Reeves' home onNew Year's Day. Christopher Reeve's acting career alone is probably not interesting enoughto sell books.It was his determination to recover from his cripplingriding accident that inspired me to listen to the audio version ofSuperhero: Ahe Biography of Christopher Reeve, by Chris Nickson.

Otherthan his rise to stardom at an early age with Superman, and his tragicaccident, there is nothing much to say.This becomes evident when theauthor runs out of words and starts using the same phrases over and overagain.By the middle of the book I was annoyed and tired of listening toit.It left me feeling that Christopher Reeve was a well to do, preppyactor who made it big, then squandered his stardom and made excuses for hisotherwise mediocre acting career.

Sadly enough, it takes his paralyzingriding accident to pick up the pace of the book and make it interestingenough to finish.His life after the fall is certainly more notable andthe book depicts a couple of really moving moments.

Perhaps in another 20years his life will have expanded enough to make a really worthwhile book.My opinion is they should have waited until then to write this one. ... Read more
