"Dana is my life force."

--Christopher Reeve

"A terrible thing happened. I wish it hadn't. But would I change who I married? Never."

--Dana Reeve

He was a hero in every sense of the word--the chiseled-from-granite star of four blockbuster Superman films and the romantic classic Somewhere in Time who, after being paralyzed in a freak horseback riding accident, became a symbol of hope for millions. Dana Reeve was no less heroic, standing steadfastly by her husband's side until his surprisingly sudden and unexpected death at age fifty-two. When Dana, a non-smoker, passed away from lung cancer just seventeen months after Chris's death, she left behind their thirteen-year-old son, Will, to be raised by friends and family. Dana was only forty-four years old.

That fate could have dealt such a cruel hand to this golden couple seemed unfathomable. That they could endure it all with grace, courage, and humor defied belief.

Yet for all the millions of words that have been written about their public causes and private struggles following Chris's accident, little is known about the lives they led as passionate young lovers. Now, in the manner of his poignant-yet-stirring bestsellers Jack and Jackie, Jackie After Jack, An Affair to Remember, The Day Diana Died, After Diana, and The Day John Died, No. l New York Times bestselling author Christopher Andersen draws on those who knew them best to examine in touching detail the Reeves' unique partnership and the romance, faith, and fortitude that defined it.

Sometimes heartbreaking, often uplifting, always compelling, Somewhere in Heaven is more than just a portrait of a marriage. It is the profoundly human story of two souls whose brief lives made a difference, a bittersweet saga of tragedy, triumph, and loss, and--above all else--a love story for the ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris and Dana Reeve - Super Book!
Excellent transaction. Super fast. Book was in like-new condition. I would order from this person again, without question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding True Story
This is a very loving story about two brave and courageous people who inspired the world with the way they lived.

3-0 out of 5 stars sad story but lots of love
This book leaves the reader with a warm feeling despite the tragedies it is about.Chris and Dana Reeve thrived despite terrible obstacles because they had so much love, both within themselves and from others.I would not say it is a "remarkable" love story because I think most spouses would hang in there and try to help their loved one in such a situation, though few would have anywhere near the financial resources or love and support of so many around the world like the Reeves did. Chris Reeve became a spokesman for the disabled, an icon in their court. The disabled in this country are often viewed in negative ways, people don't understand how much they suffer nor do they see how much they can love and how valuable they are as people, whether they can work and contribute to the GNP or not.Chris and Dana Reeve helped change that, and that is something that needs to change.Everyone has a right to be valued for who they are and what they can give to others. But some things in this book are disconcerting.I would have liked to see more exploration into why Chris Reeve could not accept not being able to walk. One of the things the book fails to tell is that a lot of quadraplegics really were not happy with his refusal to accept it.I think, from what little the book said about such things, that he just had an issue with not being able to fail, and so he was driven. The sad thing is that when he had some feeling come back, he was disappointed because he still couldn't walk.I think the little victories would have meant more if he could have accepted it.The other thing is the enormous cost of all the therapies to prepare him to walk again. His insurance company paid for a lot of it. Is this the best way to spend limited funds when there are people in this country who have no health care at all- pursuing fantasies? The book also fails to mention that his friend Robin Williams also paid for a lot of it for him.A few references were made to Chris saying he had to keep working to pay the bills. This can give the wrong impression - that we should expect quadraplegics to keep working somehow to pay for their own health care.In this way he did a disservice to the disabled population.I also was disappointed that Dana's tragic battle with lung cancer and death was told in comparatively few pages, almost like an afterthought. I also think the book failed to show the dark side more.A brief reference was made to Chris sometimes being "depressed and moody" but the reader for the most part gets to see only the bright side.I would have liked a more well-rounded picture of Dana and Chris.I think they both held a lot in to put on a good show, as one might have expected from actors, because the whole world was watching. In that way, having to tuck in their feelings and carry on, I think they suffered a lot too, but none of that was in the book. Their was a brief reference to Dana saying they both should see therapists. So they must have had a lot going on that they couldn't show the world. It was a disservice to the reader - and to them - not to show the whole picture.I also wonder what happened to the horse, Buck, that stopped short on him? They said he was going to be sold but nothing about whether anyone ever bought him.Maybe the horse was just doing what he had to do in a cosmic sense - set Chris Reeve on the journey that would do the world so much good. After all that is what Superman is all about - selflessly doing good for others.

Product Description
So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable. If we can conquer outer space, we can conquer inner space, too.

Christopher Reeve has mastered the art of turning the impossible into the inevitable. In Nothing Is Impossible, the author of the bestselling autobiography Still Me shows that we are all capable of overcoming seemingly insurmountable hardships. He interweaves anecdotes from his own life with excerpts from speeches and interviews he’s given and with evocative photos taken by his son Matthew.

Reeve teaches us that for able-bodied people, paralysis is a choice—a choice to live with self-doubt and a fear of taking risks—and that it is not an acceptable one. Reeve knows from experience that the work of conquering inner space is hard and that it requires some suffering—after all, nothing worth having is easy to get. He asks challenging questions about why it seems so difficult—if not impossible—for us to work together as a society. He steers the reader gently, offering his reflections and guidance but not the pat answers that often characterize inspirational works.

Published on the eve of both his fiftieth birthday and the seventh anniversary of his spinal cord injury, Christopher Reeve’s Nothing Is Impossible reminds us that life is not to be taken for granted but to be lived fully with zeal, curiosity, and gratitude. That is a powerful message in itself, but it is the messenger who gives it its full resonance.

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
A sequel of sorts to Reeve's bestselling memoir, Still Me, Nothing is Impossible is a concise, meditative companion to the earlier book. Each of its nine chapters is devoted to some aspect of successful living (humor, faith, hope) or addresses a major life issue (parenting, religion, recovery). Although Reeve draws on his experiences prior to his spinal chord injury in 1995, it's clear that his views on life have evolved dramatically in the seven years since. Clearly of most obvious value to those facing the challenges of physical paralysis, this book also serves as inspirational primer for otherwise able-bodied individuals who may be thwarted by mental rather than physical wounds. In additional to his personal message, Reeve is also a blunt proponent of medical insurance reform and government research funding, devoting a chapter to it here, as well as a significant portion of his nonprofit Web site, christopherreeve.org. --David Bombeck ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend this story to anyone, disabled or not
I think in the first one he was telling a story and leaving it to us to draw our own conclusions, but I'm disabled and the main reason I spent money that I can't easily replace on this was 1) because it's nice to give to something that I know is good and 2) to find out what coping mechanisms helped him through tough times, and Christopher is probably the best example of a person who would need some effective coping mechanisms.....I'm only 1/2 way through it and I'm already recommending this story to people; his insights are very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book from a great man
I got a chance to get this book as well as the first one , 'still me' and i read both books from cover to cover. They made me laugh, cry, and took mental notes for my own life. Especially Nothing is Impossible. This book had me taking a look at my own life and at my life as a mother of a disabled child. I grew up from a toddler to an adult on Mr.Reeve's work. Cinema and Theater and took so much from that to apply in life and now with this wonderful book he wrote before his untimely death, I will take so much of it and apply it as well. I constantly think of certain passages and chapters when a situation arises in my day to day existence. I wish I got a chance to read both books when he was still alive, so I could write him and tell him thank you being a superman in real life as he was in his movies. And thank you for writing two wonderful books in which he shared his personal thoughts and memories and experiences with the world. I know he and his wife are so proud of the fact that Christopher and Dana Reeve act was passed and will help those who still are able to benefit from it. Again a great book, that I can read over and over. I recommend Nothing is Impossible as well as Still Me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration
I just got this book, and I must say it really gives me pause-sometimes i think I am having a bad day, but it is nothing compared to what he went through on a daily basis just to survive, and was still able to make a good life for himself.I love the quote that for the healthy paralysis is a choice, because it feels that way with me sometimes.I wish he had lived long enough for a cure, but I am glad he was able to express himself so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Superman Christopher Reeves turned out to be!
Christopher Reeves will continue to be an inspirtion to all of us, and will influence other genertions with his insight, and courge, of trying to make the public more aware of Spinal Cord Injuries.
He was indeed, a 'real Superman!'
God Bless his family for allowing us all to know him better.

I just reread this book, and it brought back how much I admired Mr. Reeve and his bride.I really think this should be required reading to anyone that has had a spinal injury, or an amputation, just to show them that they are NOT the first to feel all these negitive feelings.

A wonderful tribute to the Reeves in general. ... Read more

Product Description
When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked 'What is a hero?'  I remember the glib response I repeated so many times.  My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences--a soldier who crawls out of a foxhole to drag an injured buddy to safety.  And I also meant individuals who are slightly larger than life: Houdini and Lindbergh, John Wayne, JFK, and Joe DiMaggio.  Now my definition is completely different.  I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles: a fifteen-year-old boy who landed on his head while wrestling with his brother, leaving him barely able to swallow or speak; Travis Roy, paralyzed in the first thirty seconds of a hockey game in his freshman year at college.  These are real heroes, and so are the families and friends who have stood by them."

The whole world held its breath when Christopher Reeve struggled for life on Memorial Day, 1995.  On the third jump of a riding competition, Reeve was thrown headfirst from his horse in an accident that broke his neck and left him unable to move or breathe.

In the years since then, Reeve has not only survived, but has fought for himself, for his family, and for the hundreds of thousands of people with spinal cord injuries in the United States and around the world.  And he has written Still Me, the heartbreaking, funny, courageous, and hopeful story of his life.

Chris describes his early success on Broadway opposite the legendary Katherine Hepburn, the adventure of filming Superman on the streets of New York, and how the movie made him a star.  He continued to move regularly between film acting and theater work in New York, Los Angeles, and at the WIlliamstown Theatre Festival in the Berkshires.  Reunited with his Bostonians director, James Ivory, in 1992, he traveled to England to work with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day.

The Man who cannot move has not stopped moving.  He has established a charitable foundation to raise awareness and money for research on spinal cord injuries.  His work as director of the HBO film In the Gloaming earned him an Emmy nomination, one of five that the film received.  His speeches at the Democratic National Convention and the Academy Awards inspired people around the country and the world.  He has testified before Congress on behalf of health insurance legislation, lobbied for increased federal funding for spinal cord research, and developed a working relationship with President Clinton.

With dignity and sensitivity, he describes the journey he has made--physically, emotionally, spiritually.  He explores his complex relationship with his parents, his efforts to remain a devoted husband and father, and his continuing and heroic battle to rebuild his life.

This is the determined, passionate story of one man, a gifted actor and star, and how he and his family came to grips with the kind of devastating, unexplainable shock that fate can bring to any of us.  Chris and Dana Reeve have gathered the will and the spirit to create a new life, one responsive and engaged and focused on the future.

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
Christopher Reeve begins his heroic reading of Still Me with aspecial introduction, including this message: "Now, this audiobook allowsme to communicate with you in a very personal way, second only to being inthe same room." Personal indeed. Hearing Reeve tell his account of thenear-fatal riding accident on Memorial Day 1995 is a life-alteringexperience. He seems to struggle through some of the more personalpassages, and there's always the slight hissing sound of the respirator, reminding you how difficult an undertaking this must have been. Shortlyafter the accident, he recalls waking up and thinking, "This can't be mylife, there's been a mistake." But by the audiobook's end, not only has he reclaimed his own life, but he's given hope to hundreds of thousands ofothers around the world with spinal cord injuries. His is a heartfelt taleof triumph over tragedy.

Admittedly he wouldn't be where he is today without the undying love andencouragement of his wife, Dana; when he speaks of her, it's clear that he'sas smitten today as he was when they first met. Reeve also credits theiryoung son Will and a huge supporting cast of family and friends. Whilestill in the early days of his long hospital stay, 3-year-old Will askedhis mom if his dad would ever be able to walk or to play soccer with him.Dana answered, "We don't know sweetheart, but maybe not." Will thoughtabout this for a moment, and concluded cheerfully, "Well he can stillsmile." Hearing the actor voice these words causes a powerful tug at yourheartstrings.

Reeve talks of having led an incredibly active life before the accident, and laments his inability to do so now, without making you feel sorryfor him. Not only was he an accomplished rider, he also was a pilot, asailor, a skier, and excelled in many other sports. And his participationin, and love for, the theater and the silver screen kept him busy nearlyfull-time.Still Me begins with the accident, then weaves back andforth between past and present, creating a thorough biography of Reeve'slife. Reeve tells of his childhood, his early theater roles and theatricaltraining, and his first real experience as a public figure following aprominent role in a popular soap opera--a recollection that elicits achuckle or two from our reader. Though we will likely never see Reeve don tightsand a bright red cape again as he did in his unforgettable role ofSuperman, some believe that he has become the superhero he once merelyportrayed. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book
When I first began to read this book, I didn't realize how deep it would draw me in. But before the end of the first chapter, I was swept deep into it and feel all the emotions that Christopher Reeve felt. I could see myself there as I was looking in at his life and experiences. It was also such a treat to know how he felt when he came across a little movie titled Superman and how he felt about the sequels after it. It was a great thing to know how he felt about Somewhere in Time also. My mother was a teen when she had me and she has been and always will be a Christopher Reeve fan and raised me as one. I was 4 when I first got to see him in the theaters as Superman (the first movie) and then she saw Somewhere in Time, he favorite movie out of all his work. And to know that was one of his faves as well, was something I had to tell her. But the way he talked about the loves of his life, his wife Dana and his three children, was something special. And I felt honored to be one of the readers he shared this with.

Like I mentioned in the review I gave for Nothing is Impossible, I am a parent of a disabled child and I appauld Mr. Reeve for fighting for all disabled citizenswhen he was still here (including my child). We are all(family of those disabled as well as the individuals who are disabled) are still fighting for their rights every day and was and will always be thankful that he was in our corner and still is as he and his lovely wife are looking down at us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Great
This is a book I keep by my bedside and read over and over again. Can you imagine being an avid sportsman, sailor, horseman, actor, husband and father and ending up living in a chair breathing from a tube?He made a deal with his wife to keep on living for two years and then decide together whether to commit suicide. What a great man with a great story and tremendous writing talent.Rest in peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poignant
I am almost done with this, and I can honestly say I developed a lot of empathy of what it must be like to have your life as you know it taken from you in a flash. He recounts his daily struggles and attempts to stay in show business very well, and his accounts of what he had to go through every day made me feel sorry for him.His accounts of his early days of an actor were a little boring, but were probably put in there for his true fans.I am sorry he passed, he seemed like a decent person who did not deserve his fate, and he makes an inspiring case for dealing with our struggles, rather than shying away from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars "One unlucky moment"
Christopher Reeve's inspiring autobiography begins with the 1995 riding accident that left him a paraplegic when he was 42.The book then flows between the present and his past, detailing his childhood, extensive stage career, and sudden fame as Superman in 1978.In addition to being a popular leading man, Reeve was also a dedicated sportsman; the contrast between his life before and after the accident and the regimen required to not only survive but live an active and rewarding life is a fascinating story.

He credited his wife and children for sustaining him and giving him his love for life, and he found great joy and purpose in working on behalf of spinal cord research. His writing is honest and intimate.I'm glad he was surrounded by so many people who loved him to the end. ... Read more

Product Description
Many hundreds of thousands suffer spinal cord injuries leading to loss of sensation and motor function in the body below the point of injury. Spinal cord research has made some significant strides towards new treatment methods, and is a focus of many laboratories worldwide. In addition, research on the involvement of the spinal cord in pain and the abilities of nervous tissue in the spine to regenerate has increasingly been on the forefront of biomedical research in the past years. The Spinal Cord, a collaboration with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, is the first comprehensive book on the anatomy of the mammalian spinal cord. Tens of thousands of articles and dozens of books are published on this subject each year, and a great deal of experimental work has been carried out on the rat spinal cord. Despite this, there is no comprehensive and authoritative atlas of the mammalian spinal cord. Almost all of the fine details of spinal cord anatomy must be searched for in journal articles on particular subjects. This book addresses this need by providing both a comprehensive reference on the mammalian spinal cord and a comparative atlas of both rat and mouse spinal cords in one convenient source. The book provides a descriptive survey of the details of mammalian spinal cord anatomy, focusing on the rat with many illustrations from the leading experts in the field and atlases of the rat and the mouse spinal cord. The rat and mouse spinal cord atlas chaptersinclude photographs of Nissl stained transverse sections from each of the spinal cord segments (obtained from a single unfixed spinal cord), detailed diagrams of each of the spinal cord segments pictured, delineating the laminae of Rexed and all other significant neuronal groupings at each level and photographs of additional sections displaying markers such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), calbindin, calretinin, choline acetlytransferase, neurofilament protein (SMI 32), enkephalin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN).

The text provides a detailed account of the anatomy of the mammalian spinal cord and surrounding musculoskeletal elements.
The major topics addressed are:

. development of the spinal cord

. the gross anatomy of the spinal cord and its meninges

. spinal nerves, nerve roots, and dorsal root ganglia

. the vertebral column, vertebral joints, and vertebral muscles

. blood supply of the spinal cord

. cytoarchitecture and chemoarchitecture of the spinal gray matter

. musculotopic anatomy of motoneuron groups

. tracts connecting the brain and spinal cord

. spinospinal pathways

. sympathetic and parasympathetic elements in the spinal cord

. neuronal groups and pathways that control micturition

. the anatomy of spinal cord injury in experimental animals

The atlas of the rat and mouse spinal cord has the following features:

. Photographs of Nissl stained transverse sections from each of 34 spinal segments for the rat and mouse.

. Detailed diagrams of each of the 34 spinal segments for rat and mouse, delineating the laminae of Rexed and all other significant neuronal groupings at each level.

. Alongside each of the 34 Nissl stained segments, there are additional sections displaying markers such as acetylcholinesterase, calbindin, calretinin, choline acetlytransferase, neurofilament protein (SMI 32), and neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN).

. All the major motoneuron clusters are identified in relation to the individual muscles or muscle groups they supply. ... Read more

Product Description
Movie celebrity Clint Eastwood fights an access lawsuit. Christopher Reeve insists what's needed is cure. Those who argue for civil-rights protections for disabled people -- rights guaranteed by federal law for over a decade - are all but silent.

The Americans with Disabilities Act "defies logic and common sense," The New York Times once editorialized. Salon.com dismissed it as "a surreal ideology." Why are disability rights so disliked? Why do detractors insist nobody knows about it, even as thousands of articles have been devoted to it? Why do they claim it's a bad law?

In "Make Them Go Away: Clint Eastwood, Christopher Reeve & The Case Against Disability Rights," longtime disability-rights journalist Mary Johnson sheds rare light on this issue by examining the case against disability rights in depth. What are its main arguments? Where do they come from? And what is the other side? Can a valid -- strong -- case be made FOR disability rights? It can, says Johnson, who makes a compelling argument that, since the disabled minority is the one minority any of us can suddenly and unexpectedly join, the nation ignores disability rights at its peril. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This should be required reading!
At the risk of sounding dramatic, I can honestly say that this book
changed the way I see the world. It was my first formal introduction
to the disability rights movement, and more profoundly, to the social
model of disability.

I consider myself a liberal, and civil rights have always been at the
top of the list of issues important to me. Unsurprisingly (but still
appallingly), I'd never really thought about disability rights. I had
always just believed the medical model, because that's how disability
had always been presented to me. I ran across this book by chance, and
more or less decided to read it because the title intrigued me. The
case against disability rights? Who's against the disabled?

Chapter by chapter, Make Them Go Away reversed the way I think.
Mary Johnson combines history, anecdotes, and quotes from other people
to weave several convincing arguments that broke down everything I
thought I knew about disability. I started it knowingnothing about
disability rights, and by the time I finished it I had resolved to
become an advocate for the issue. I have been trying to tell other
people what I learned from it, but the book is so well-crafted, so
effective, that I just can't put it into my own words. I can only
recommend that people read it for themselves.

Despite being an excellent introduction to disability rights, Make
Them Go Away is not a textbook, and is definitely biased in the
direction of the social model. But I don't think that's bad at all. On
the contrary, I think it's exactly what the average person needs in
order to wake up to the reality of the marginalization of millions of
people.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Won't Go Away!
Quick! Who made the following comment:

"I think it's important to realize that treating all disabled
people as equal--with equal rights and responsibilities--is absurd.
Many of the patients that come through any rehab hospital are there
because of their own ignorance, negligence, stupidity or criminal activities."

A member of a supremacist group? Nope. It was Dr. Kenneth Lefebre
at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. How about this?

"The legal requirement that 'the handicapped' be 'mainstreamed'
is damaging to 'the normal child'."

That was written by Eileen Gardner, appointee to the Reagan
Education Department, in one of her policy papers.

One more, and this one is the real shocker because the
commentator has a disability herself:

"Deny as we may want to, at the point when a person can not be
totally independent physically from others, one is no longer
equal in body. I do not want to be treated equally. I can still
think, but for the life of me I can't think of a way to get rid
of the wheelchair. Therefore, I am not on the same ground I used
to be on. To me that makes my way not equal...How can we bury our
heads so deep and say we are equal to the able bodies around us?
We are not. That's why it is called a handicap, because it is."

Comments like these only bolster the viewpoint Mary Johnson is
fighting against in her perception-shattering book, "Make Them
Go Away: The Case Against Disability Rights". She argues that
people with disabilities are a minority just as women and people
of color are nowadays. Disability, she posits, is a social and
cultural idea, and not merely a "medical problem".

Because people are perceived to be disabled, they are perceived
by society to be unable, incapable of doing much for themselves
or others. Johnson theorizes that the case against disability
rights is strong right now because of this philosophy. It is
also strong because "a disabled person's role in society was
not to criticize it from a minority perspective--for they were
not a true minority--but to work at becoming normal, to be
rehabilitated if not cured."

That, and there have been several lawsuits about the ADA, or
Americans with Disabilities Act. Nobody likes lawsuits, so...

...no wonder most of society still thinks, "Make Them Go Away"!

This book describes what has been happening for years centuries. As an EEO specialist I know my rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should protect my rights at the Federal Level. The ADA Act is suppose to protect me at the local level and it does not.I do believe that EVERYONE has rights in this country our rights are comprised every day.As I read the other reviews I noticed Tomthumbguy believes the Civil Rights Moment 60s is not the same I beg to differ. Disabled people like African Americans in the 1960's are still not allowed to eat , shop, go to the movies, travel and live in certain places because there is limited accessibility or people just don't want us there. If I am not mistaken does that not sound like the segregated south from the 1700s until maybe 30 years ago. Also, let's keep in mind disabled people come from all walks of life and ethnicities. That included African Americans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad this book makes people think.
I have not completely read this book. But I am glad that it is making people think. To the reviewer who is up set with this book...I am white so I have no reference for what it is like for African Americans. However, I am disabled and I too would like to be able to go to the same places that everyone else does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with some serious questions
I too personally have experienced what Mary Johnson documents in her well-researched work.

Social antipathy against people with disabilities is so mainstreamed in America that progressive activists who rush to condemn other forms of bigotry, engage in bigotry against people with disabilities. We are time and/or money consuming entities that are still honestly not perceived as contributing anything to society let alone being recognized as social equals.

This inequality then leads people to interpret the ADA as a burden on them as opposed to considering the greater burdens which unjust discrimination places on both the recipient and the nation.

However, I have one minor suggestion to ensure that this book gets to those most needing to read it.

Change the title to more accurately reflect that this book is a critique of how society handles disability instead of something itself which opposes the disability rights movement. Because the disability rights movement is acknowledged as seeking liberation of stereotypical attitudes and laws, it aids Mary Johnson's case.

Product Description

"This book is a thank-you letter. A long overdue reply to all of the people who, during one of the most difficult and painful periods my family has had to endure, took time and wrote to us; faxed us; phoned or visited us; prayed for us; joined hands for us; sent us flowers, gifts, white light, religious tokens and talismans, books, tapes, drawings, funny stories and jokes that made us laugh, tales of overcoming hardship that inspired us and gave us hope. . . ."

When Christopher Reeve was paralyzed in a riding accident on May 27, 1995, letters poured in from around the world, some addressed only to "Superman, USA." It was an astonishing demonstration of sympathy and support for a man who had become an American icon. In Care Packages, Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, has collected some of the most unforgettable letters and gifts that her family received. There are thoughts and prayers from Hollywood's greatest stars, like Katharine Hepburn ("Golly. What a mess. Call me.") and Robert De Niro, politicians and presidents, and, of course, the everyday heroes who have prevailed in the face of nearly overwhelming adversity to lead rich and fulfilling lives. These letters are inspiring, funny, surprising, and always deeply touching. Some writers offer advice (listen to jazz, try LSD psychotherapy, get a cat), while others simply tell their own stories in a beautiful gesture of hope and community. And sometimes the youngest fans say it best ("I'm sorry that you fell off your horse. Let's hope it won't happen again"; "i broke my neck....im ok now. i hope you will be too"). But Care Packages is not only about the "strangers and other friends" who have had such a profound effect on the Reeves. With an introduction to each chapter by Dana Reeve, it is also the story of a marriage and a family facing the ultimate test--from the fear of the emergency room to the long, hard days of rehab to the bittersweet moments of a wedding anniversary--and reaffirming their commitment in a thousand new ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of warm hearts and caring thoughts.....
I read this book in 2000 and I was both inspired and touched by it.
I began writing to the Reeves shortly after Chris had his
riding accident, and I never stopped.
Chris and Dana were two of the most caring and enduring people
in the world. Now that they are both gone, this book serves as a tribute of sort to both of them. They have left a legacy of love,
kindness, and family values for everyone to remember and reflect upon.
For anyone who needs any amount of inspiration and uplifting of
spirit, simply get a copy of this book.
May God forever keep Christopher and Dana Reeve in His sweet embrace.

4-0 out of 5 stars "See there are a few nice people left in the world !"
I think most people today have become bitter and cold. Not bothering to take the time to even say 'good morning,' in most cases. You are lucky to get someone (today) to even nod their head with a good morning gesture. It is nice to discover that there are a few people still left in the world today who are polite enough to send someone like 'Superman,' a warm and heartfelt good luck wish!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming and a great tribute to a fine person
I think this is a charming and insightful collection, and I feel not the least bit silly spending money on it.Christopher Reeve is one of my heroes, and I wrote e-mail to him via a website not long after hisaccident.I'm gratified and warmed to see how many other people didsomething similar.

Chris, you're much loved - and Dana, thank you forsharing these letters with us.We haven't forgotten either of you, andwe're still praying for that moment that all the fighting and strugglingpays off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dana calls these letters gifts, they are a gift to us all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris Reeve is an inspiration to young and old.
I first met Chris in Atlanta in 1994 and was struck by his grace and incredible presence. I saw him again at a private party following his star ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 15, 1997. The Reeve familyare a fine example of the true meaning of "family". Meeting themand being involved with fund-raising and Superman events has changed mylife. I exchanged this wonderful, touching book with my little Supermanbuddy, Joey, on Thanksgiving day. This 8-year-old boy is the biggestSuperman fan I know. We took a photo together in our Superman shirts withour books and many of Joey's Superman collectibles. I mailed the photo, along with Joey's special letter and gift for Chris, to the Reeves' home onNew Year's Day. Joey, his mom and I love the "Kids" chapter ofthis book with all of the lovely drawings and messages from children allover the world. I've never loved a book more than this one. Thanks Dana! Ibelieve that Chris will be best known as the Super Man who helped alldisabled people fulfill their dreams. Jim Bowers - Flying78@bellsouth.net. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1978 we knew him as a superhero. Soaring through the air, he seemed to embody the strength, courage, and virtue of the Man of Steel. In 1995, paralyzed from a riding accident and unable to breath without a ventilator, actor Christopher Reeve became a different kind of hero--a real one of flesh and blood, who bravely faced the most devastating kind of setback, and who ultimately became a role model for anyone who has ever wanted to give up in the face of hardship. In Superhero we see a man who has been driven from day one, driven to succeed academically, athletically, professionally, and after his accident, even more determined-to walk again, to help others in need, and to prove that the soul and spirit can soar, even when the body can barely move. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars ...Disappointing
Christopher Reeve's acting career alone is probably not interesting enoughto sell books. It was his determination to recover from his cripplingriding accident that inspired me to listen to the audio version ofSuperhero: Ahe Biography of Christopher Reeve, by Chris Nickson.

Otherthan his rise to stardom at an early age with Superman, and his tragicaccident, there is nothing much to say. This becomes evident when theauthor runs out of words and starts using the same phrases over and overagain.By the middle of the book I was annoyed and tired of listening toit.It left me feeling that Christopher Reeve was a well to do, preppyactor who made it big, then squandered his stardom and made excuses for hisotherwise mediocre acting career.

Sadly enough, it takes his paralyzingriding accident to pick up the pace of the book and make it interestingenough to finish. His life after the fall is certainly more notable andthe book depicts a couple of really moving moments.

Perhaps in another 20years his life will have expanded enough to make a really worthwhile book.My opinion is they should have waited until then to write this one. ... Read more
