Product Description

This book provides school administrators, school-based mental health professionals, and other educational professionals with the framework and tools needed to establish a comprehensive safe learning environment.  The authors identify four necessary phases to achieve this (prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery) and provide numerous examples and tools to help readers create safe environments, while also addressing students’ academic, emotional, and social needs.  An emphasis is placed on the importance of the balance between physical and psychological safety within a multi-tiered framework - it is not enough for students to know their school is secure; they must also feel they are safe and can turn to their teachers and school-based mental health professionals with their concerns.  An accompanying CD contains several valuable resources, such as forms, handouts, articles, and monitoring tools.

Product Description

By age 16, significant – one might even say "alarming" – numbers of students are demonstrating signs of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Students with PTSD are more likely to develop a range of problems, from delinquent behavior to eating disorders to substance abuse to dropping out. For the school-based professional, the ability to recognize these symptoms and warning signs is essential.

Emphasizing prevention as well as intervention, Identifying, Assessing, and Treating PTSD at School clearly defines PTSD, explains its adverse affects on children’s academic and social-emotional skills, and offers expert guidance on how to recognize student needs and provide appropriate services. This volume, designed as a practical, easy-to-use reference for school psychologists and other educational professionals:

  • Makes the case for why school psychologists and their colleagues need to be more prepared, willing, and able to identify and serve students with PTSD.
  • Identifies the causes, prevalence, and associated conditions of PTSD.
  • Provides a review of screening, referral, and diagnostic assessment processes.
  • Reviews appropriate treatments for students with PTSD.

Today’s youth live in an increasingly uncertain world, and school psychologists, counselors, social workers, and general and special education personnel will find Identifying, Assessing, and Treating PTSD at School an invaluable resource in their practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone working with children!
Amanda B. Nickerson, Melissa A. Reeves, Stephen E. Brock, and Shane R. Jimerson bring to light through their book Identifying, Assessing, and Treating PTSD at School the fact that many school-aged children are suffering from the stress and anxiety related to PTSD due to experiences during their childhood. The concise and complete approach used by these authors explaining what PTSD is, how to identify, assess, and treat children who show signs of the disorder is a quick read and provides invaluable training for school professionals that will help students who suffer from this syndrome. This book is an invaluable resource for all school personnel that deal with students who are experiencing stress, depression, or anxiety related issues.

With a quarter of youth suggested to be exposed to trauma by the age of sixteen, many educational professionals will be teaching, counseling, and guiding a significant number of students affected by this disorder. Identifying, Assessing, and Treating PTSD at School provides a wealth of information regarding risk factors and warning signs. It is a useful manual to help school psychologists advance through the assessment process. The authors have created an extremely practical handbook of interventions and programs that can benefit students who have moved through the identification and assessment stages and are striving to be successful in the classroom. They have also included an appendix including valuable resources on the internet that can be used to further one's knowledge on the subject of PTSD.

I highly recommend this book for any professional working with students. Identifying PTSD in such a young population can be a complicated process. This book helps to de-mystify the steps that should be taken and the warning signs that can often disguise themselves as other issues within an academic setting. This book is a staple that should be on all bookshelves. It is a great, quick, easy reference with great resources! ... Read more

Excerpt: Kurt Donald Cobain (pronounced , ; February 20, 1967 c. April 5, 1994) was an American singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Nirvana. With the lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from Nirvana's second album Nevermind (1991), Nirvana entered into the mainstream, popularizing a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained wider audiences, and as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-middle 1990s. Nirvana was considered the "flagship band of Generation X", and frontman Cobain found himself reluctantly anointed by the media as the generation's "spokesman." Cobain was uncomfortable with the attention he received, and placed his focus on the band's music, believing the band's message ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16707 ... Read more
