The largest Buffy collection ever! Food Chain presents such landmarks in Buffy`s comics history as T.V. scribe Doug Petrie`s first comics story, Bad Dog, drawn by the notorious Ryan (The Spectre) Sook; Christian (Rising Stars) Zanier`s first two-part Buffy tale; and Chris Golden and Tom Sniegoski`s first Buffy collaboration, from the 1999 Buffy Annual. Also presented here is the unforgettable Double Cross, Doug Petrie`s epilogue to Buffy`s third season, dealing with the night Angel left Sunnydale once and for all. These stories span three years of Buffy`s history, taking us through the breakup with Angel, and into the college years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ride a Dark Horse
Set in the third and fourth seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is a medley of eight stories buy a variety of authors and illustrators. The keynote tale is the two part 'Food Chain,' which traces the fate of a young juvenile delinquent who first runs afoul of a high school student/very bad demoness, and then, when that doesn't work out, invokes a demon who likes murdering all his friends.Buffy, of course, to the rescue.

Other tales include 'The Latest Craze,' the story of what happens when owning miniature demons becomes a fad for the rich and snooty, and 'Double Cross' about a demon who resembles the Alien on steroids and has a knack for being in two places at once. Then there is 'One Small Promise,' a Buffy/Riley tidbit and 'City of Despair,' an interesting story that pits Buffy and Angel against each other in a final confrontation in yet another dimension. The remaining two tales are 'Bad Dog,' in which Oz is freed to so that a geek with low self-esteem can drain Willow's power, and 'Punish Me with Kisses,' a ghost story that is a bit too cute.

On top of offering a set of interesting, well conceived stories, 'Food Chain' has a stellar cast of illustrators. Both the stories and the full page artwork offer a far greater variety than the regular Dark Horse productions, which gives the reader a chance to appreciate different styles and better understand the arcane art of comic book production. If you aren't normally drawn to the graphic novel format, but want something that offers a representative sample of its potential this is the one to own.

Buffy is dead. Her friends are trying to get on with their lives. Between them, there is enough anger, frustration, loss, guilt, and tragedy to resurrect an ancient demon. Sunnydale being what it is, things aren’t looking too good for Willow, Xander, and the gang. A lovelorn demon has been set free into our dimension, and its food is the grief of Buffy’s nearest and dearest. If that’s not bad enough, a horde of demonic reptilian sorcerers plan to resurrect their fallen comrade and paint the town blood red. Can Buffy’s friends face the threat without a Slayer to defend them? Willow finds that she can learn a great deal from these reptilian mystics. And if there’s going to be one resurrection, why can’t there be TWO? ... Read more

I love this comic book it is really nice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buffy NEEDS Buffy
Title notwithstanding, "The Death of Buffy" is not about the death of Buffy. When the book begins, she's already dead. Rather, it should be called "Life without Buffy," as it strives to fill the gap between her death at the end of one season and her resurrection at the start of the next.

It goes without saying that everyone is very sad, that the Sunnydale Scoobies are working extra hard to keep up with the vampire/demon threat without a slayer to lead them, that Dawn is annoying, Anya says quirky things, Xander and Spike argue, and Giles dispenses calm English wisdom.

One senses the story was written less to tell a vital chapter in the ongoing adventures of the Buffy mythos and more because someone thought there should be a story filling in the gaps from the summer rerun season. Just what was everyone doing while Buffy was rotting away in her casket? Someone wondered, and this book was born. But it's pretty dull. Dialogue is flat. And it hammers home the point that, without Buffy, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for BtVS fans!
This book fills in the blanks of what happened to the gang during the summer that Buffy was dead. As a trade paperback, this is basically a reprinting of the Buffy comics. The first part is from the Buffy one-shot "Lost and Found", and the rest is the "Death of Buffy" trilogy (Issues #43-45 of the BtVS comic series, if you're trying to keep track.)

Most of the time, the BtVS publications (novels, comics, etc.) tend to stretch or ignore the show's canon or wreck havoc on the timeline, but this one does not. It perfectly captures the emotions and personalities of the characters, especially Dawn, Spike and Xander. I have no problem believing that these events actually happened.

There is also a bonus story, "Withdrawal", which takes place in the middle of season six. This is a sequel of sorts to the illustrated novel "Creatures of Habit" (It intrigued me enough to order "Creatures" also). If you're a fan of the Buffy/Spike relationship, these are probably the only two publications that really do justice to the dynamic between them. I highly recommend them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars The death of Buffy
This volume contains two stories: "The death of Buffy" and "Withdrawal".
- "The death of Buffy" is a bittersweet story of what happened after the season 5 finale "The gift", about how the Scooby gang dealt (or at first didn't deal) with the death of Buffy. I could especially feel Dawn's pain. It's a wonderful fill-in the blanks story between "The gift" (5.22) and "Bargaining" (6.01 & 6.02). We get to see how the Buffybot came back into the Scooby scene, how Willow and Tara came to live in the Summers household and how Willow got the spell to resurrect Buffy. Great story! 5 stars out of 5.

The second story "Withdrawal" is a short story that takes place after the episode "Gone" (6.11). This story features Velatti, a character that was introduced in the book "Creatures of habit". So I would recommend reading this book before reading this story.I give this story 3.5 star out of 5, only because it was so short.

All in all, a great volume! I'd recommend this volume to every BtVS fan, especially if you like comics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buffy is still awesome!
I think this is still a neat collectable. Comic, cross and holy water! A little of everything. A nice product and a nice gift for your Buffy, Slayer or Vampire fan!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not My Buffy
How Buffy fans gave this book any more than two stars (one because it's BtVS, and another because of Cliff Richards' art) is beyond me.Buffy The Vampire Slayer, as a television show, was an exercise in character-driven writing with epic story arcs and experimental direction, with messages, themes, and characters that fans and critics fell in love with.Andi Watson's take on Buffy in this comic (the concluding volume to the nine-issue "Bad Blood" story arc) is none of the above.Watson degrades Buffy into a mindless, nonsensical genre show that fans could only possibly like as a guilty pleasure.

The plot is basically this: A vampire named Selke who was once physically deformed (thanks to Buffy) enlisted the help of a plastic surgeon (who, for some reason, knows magic and potion making) to fight Buffy. For some reason, Selke doesn't want to kill Buffy herself (after she raved for half of the series about how badly she does) so she has the doctor create a replic of Buffy. The replica beats up Buffy and takes her place for the majority of this series, so the basic storyline is waiting to see how long the Scoobs figure out that this isn't the real Buffy and wondering why in the world Selke isn't active in her need to kill Buffy any more.

It's a wonky plot, but Joss Whedon made wonky plots work on his show.Andi Watson doesn't.He doesn't understand the characters at all.The final two issues in this three-issue book have Giles, Willow, Oz, Xander, and Cordy working on a float so it could be in the parade. When they find out that Buffy is missing and the Buffy they've been hanging with for the past few days is an evil replica, what do they do?Do they go out and try to find Buffy? No, they dress up like clowns and walk in the parade, crossing their fingers that they'll see something. And, of course, the final battle just happens to take place right there. The fact that this was a professional comic is creepier than anything Watson wrote in the actual story.

The one good thing about this book (other than Cliff's art) is the appearance of one of the failed attempts to make a replica of Buffy. It's a moment where Watson actually impressed me, but other than that this is one of the worst Buffy comics you'll find.

PS: If you don't want to waste your money on these individual trades, the entire nine issues of the "Bad Blood" arc is collected in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Omnibus, Volume 4.

The best bit is when Mr. Pointy makes an appearance!
Otherwise, nothing you really need to see here. This is just an ordinary Buffy story, one that I would only recommend getting cheap.Buffy and a weirdly similar version of her, that is another entity, designed to combat her, etc. etc. etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Written By Jane Espenson."What More Would A Fan Need?
This is pretty much a no-brainer for a Buffy fan.Now that the series is being continued through a canonical comic series, many fans may want to check out some of the older Buffy comics that Dark Horse has published. Many of them are bad, most are mediocre, and few are good, but the quality of this can't even be questioned. It's written by Jane Espenson. She was a major writer of the actual televised series, working closely with Joss Whedon since as early as the third season. She's written some of Buffy's most major moments, so putting her in charge of this story is pretty much like putting a fish in water to see how good it will swim.Needless to say, this story worked. And it worked well.

"Haunted" is set during one of the most intriguing periods of the Buffyverse timeline. The main action (excluding the Faith/Angel intro) of the story begins directly after the third season ends. Many lose ends of the series are tied up, and major back story is given on the Initiative and Adam, who serves as the Big Bad of the fourth season. But this comic didn't just set out to tie up lose ends, it also had a very interesting standalone story about the Mayor's spirit jumping from corpse to corpse, trying to reek havoc on Buffy's life. The plot is interesting, the character interaction is even better, and the Mayor's internal dialogue (he's basically the `narrator' for much of this trade paperback) is spot on, and always hilarious.I thought the resolution of the Mayor conflict was a bit rushed and came off "too easy," but the sheer quality of the rest of the book makes up for that.

Artist Cliff Richards, who is well known for drawing countless Buffy comics, doesn't offer up his best work here. His art in these issues is pretty consistently good, but only one panel really wowed me (when the Sunnydale graduates watch the burning school).Richards had to draw many characters from the television that never appeared before in the comics. His takes on these characters (Faith, Maggie Walsh) is mediocre at best, and he's clearly more at home with Buffy, Xander, and Willow. However, I was disappointed to see that his depiction of Giles was actually quite horrible. In no way did it resemble Giles in the slightest.Usually, I wouldn't comment so much on the art, but I felt it was appropriate, as Cliff Richards was pretty much THE major Buffy artist (pre-Season Eight).

This is a comic that any Buffy fan will enjoy. The best part about it is that it fits comfortably into continuity, basically because it's written by someone who deeply understands the mythology and character arcs of the series--because she had a hand in creating it.Essential Buffyverse reading.

8/10

5-0 out of 5 stars Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Haunted -- Excellent!
Excellent story line by Jane Esperson. She is one of the original writers from the Buffy TV series. She knows the characters well and probably has the best personification of it in all of the Buffy graphic novels.

Also, Cliff Richards is absolutely the most accurate artist for the Buffy Graphic novels--all of the illustrations closely resembles each of the star actors.

If you are a Buffy fan, this graphic novel is a must, and it will become your favorite as it is mine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
I checked this book out of my local library, and boy was I glad I hadn't bought it because after the fourth chapter i wanted to stop reading. It really is a boring book compared to other buffy books, such as child of the hunt, or note from underground.I would recemend not buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Well, Gosh!"
You just can't keep a bad Slayer down-not in Sunnydale, at least!

Buffy finds herself up against a body-hopping nightmare with attitude-a single intelligence animating all sorts of evil undead nasties, with a special taste specifically for her and her Scooby Gang.What-or who-could it be?Buffy's best clue should probably be who is suddenly haunting her dreams:Faith the Fallen, still in coma in the hospital, but active as hell on Buffy's psychic psyche.Every time the battle-weary Slayer falls asleep, her arch-nemesis combats Buffy in "Dreamland"-a place Faith has learned to navigate especially well, given the several months she's been in that netherworld between life and death.Which raises the old question as to whether or not, if one dies in a dream, they will also die in real life-but then (so Faith informs her), Buffy is already dead...

Veteran Buffy series writer Jane Espenson penned this little goodie, which heralds the welcome arrival of that great diabolical duo, Faith and the Mayor-yes, the discarnate intelligence stalking the Scoobies is, of course, the Mayor (which is revealed in the opening panels, so I'm not spoiling anything)-to Buffy's comic book adventures. The artwork, in common with all the Buffy graphic novel series, is spotty-sometimes good, sometimes not so good-but the story is strong, and the writing of Faith and especially the Mayor is fabulous. There are also some nice tie-ins between the third and fourth season of the show (when this story is set), bridging the demise of Sunnydale High and Buffy's discovery of the military underground Initiative.

Given that the evil Mayor Wilkins is such a nerd, there's as much humor as horror to this particular story, making it one of the most entertaining the series has to offer.Perhaps his own exit line from Season Three-the best ever, in the show-sums "Haunted" up best:"Well, gosh!" ... Read more

This study of sea cliffs is part of a series looking at habitats in the UK. For each habitat type, a number of examples are used from various parts of the country. Each title has an introductory spread explaining what a habitat is and that, within the UK and indeed a locality, many different habitats may be found. The following spreads look at the specifics of the habitat - plants, animals, insects, birds. They investigate what happens to these during changing seasons and why each is suited to its habitat. The texts also cover environmental care, looking at the threats to each habitat type and what is being done to protect them. There is also a page showing an example food chain to illustrate how plants and animals interact within their habitats. Captions are used to highlight the different localities used as examples. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Big delightful surprize!
To my surprize, I found this book to be the best British autobiography since Patrick Macnee gave us _Blind in One Ear : the Avenger Returns_ in 1989. The writing is so full of surprizing metaphors and wit, that I predict many sentences and some paragraphs from this book will be in editions of _Barlett's Familiar Quotations_ a hundred years from now. The sections on Mr Allen's childhood are as fascinating and well told (though too full of cuss words for young readers) as any section from _Harry Potter_ of equal length. I hope there are more books from Mr Allen and more recorded music as well. Unless this has made the bestseller lists in England without my knowledge, buy it now; I bet it's been overlooked. The inside view of the pop music world of the 1960's through the present is fascinating, but actually irrelevant: it's the way the darned book is written that makes it the reading highlight of the last 12 years for me. ... With everybody preoccupied with grief, anger, guilt, and regret the fight against the forces of darkness doesn’t seem all that crucial somehow. 5-0 out of 5 stars Opening Pandora's Box
This new Buffy trade paperback, a reprise of BTVS comics #39 through #42, opens with 'Night of a Thousand Vampires.'Buffy is deep in the midst of grieving the loss of her mother.Meanwhile, across Sunnydale, another mother plots revenge for the loss of her daughter, whose voodoo magic put her in conflict with Buffy, and finally caused her death.Originally intending to fill the night with vampires, the spell is triggered too early, forcing Buffy to rouse from her own grief to undo the damage another's has done. This introductory tale (from #39) takes up only a quarter of the book, leaving the rest of the space for a major piece of grand theater.

The title story is about the inexplicable appearance if a set of Avendshrook demons, impish creatures that feed on anger and jealousy. There influence sets the entire Scooby gang at odds.Sort of a divide and conquer approach. The Avendshrook may not be able to do much physical damage, but they can make you miserable while World War III is breaking out around you.Anya and Willow are hissing at each other, Xander thinks Tara is behind the infestation, and Spike (poor Spike!) is perpetually getting thrashed by Buffy. If someone doesn't figure out what to do, vampires will be the least of Buffy's issues.

While Buffy is not always great at temper management, this is the first Buffy comic series where everyone is out of control. It is interesting to see our favorite group of misfits act out a whole theme and variations on jealousy and anger.Even though everyone is so deadly serious, this is still a very funny story.Surprisingly, it is Spike, normally the really bad guy, who shows the most character. As we know, Spike is maturing throughout the fifth season, and this shows in Fassbender and Pascoe's writing.Cliff Richards and friends, as usual, wield the pencils and inks with their usual brilliance.A short addendum displays the cover work of Jeff Matsuda. ...
