Dame Wendy Richard MBE please!
Wendy Richard is one of Britain's beloved maternal figures better known for Pauline than Miss Brahms. This autobiography shows us her life up close and personal. She is one of those people who deserves more from life. If she was a mother, I bet she would have been a fantastic mother to any child. Unfortunately, she has had three marriages all ending in divorce for one reason or another. She now has love with John Burns but I think she could get married again. She has fought for her career and life and I think she is a wonderful role model. She is honest and candid and is aware of hurting others. When she thought about turning down an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire), I wanted to reach in and slap on the television set. Of course, she deserves it. So what if she's a Conservative Monarchist and the Prime Minister is Labour. It doesn't matter, she has provided both great comic and dramatic moments. She has also had another bout of breast cancer since then and she has come through. God Bless you, Wendy.

Miss Brahms. . . Are You Free?
Roger Miller sang "England Swings(like a pendulum do. . . " back in the sixties . . . and Roger hit on something "special" about England . . ."it swings"! . . .

England gave us Shakespeare . . . Hayley Mills . . . The Beatles . . . and Ms Wendy Richard MBE!!! . . .

Wendy has been a "presence" in British theater and television since the sixties . . . and continues even today in a long-running role as Pauline on "The Eastenders" on the BBC and on Public Television in America.

But i remember (and still watch) Wendy as "Shirley Brahms" in "Are You Being Served?" . . . one of the all time great "classic comedies" which began it's run in 1972 . . and which continues to be aired and enjoyed here in "the States" over Public Television. Wendy will always "be" Miss Brahms!

In this book, Wendy recounts her most intersting life . . . from childhood to adult "fame" . . . and it is obvious that "fame" to Wendy is not what it seems to so many of us. She is quite normal . . quite "human" . . . and quiye unimpressed with ther artifice of "fame" . . . She is proud of her success as an actress . . prouder still of her care and concern for animals . . . and happy that her "work" and "talent" and "person' has brought so much joy and pleasure and delight to so many who have watched her on "the tele" . . . so many who look upon her as a person they "know" though never actually met.

Wendy can make you laugh hysterically . . . smile gleefully . .and even "cry" with sympathetic recognition. .. in her filmed work and art . . . but she can accomplish these same effects by recounting her real actual life as well . . and she does this in this volume.(There is a photograph of Wendy, as a child, standing outside a pub which her parents operated . . . and then, she stands outside that very same pub as a full grown successful adult . . . after reading this book, this photograph is so telling . . . and one wonders what thoughts must have ran through Wendy's recollections as she stood there for this most recent photo . . .

One thing becomes perfectly clear: Wendy Richard is a Londoner . . she loves "her city" . . and is faithful to it. (And now she's "Wendy Richard MBE"!:)

This book is a great read . . and you'll meet a great person when you begin reading it: Miss Wendy Richard (no "S")!

An Interesting and Informative Autobiography
Whether one is familiar with her as Miss Brahms on Are You Being Served? or as Pauline on Eastenders, fans of either show are sure to enjoy this lively and very personal memoir of (and by) actress Wendy Richard.

From her early years as the only child of somewhat nomadic parents in the licensing trade through to her courageous (and successful) battle in 1996 with breast cancer and her recent MBE award, Wendy is very frank and upfront in chronicling both her personal life and her career.She tells of her deep love for her parents and how the tragic loss of her father while she was still a child resulted in hardship for her and her mother.Following the deterioration and death of her mother around 1973, Wendy embarked on a series of disastrous relationships (three of which were marriages) that spanned a period of more than twenty years, and Wendy takes us through it all.

As an interesting touch, Wendy chronicles the story of Pauline (the character whom she has portrayed on the soap opera Eastenders since 1985) at the same time as she chronicles her own life story.Pauline has been a huge part of Wendy's life and she seems to feel a real attachment to the character.I am not a soap fan and have never seen Eastenders; nevertheless, Wendy's own life reads so much like a soap opera itself that the parallel story is somewhat appropriate, and I rather enjoyed her account of it.

The book contains 24 pages of photos (colour and b/w).There are a few stills from AYBS?, but most of the photos are from Wendy's own collection--photos of her parents, of her as a child, of friends and fellow cast members, of her precious pooch named Shirley (Wendy is a committed animal lover!), and of her at various functions and events.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this autobiography--so much so that I had trouble putting it down.Wendy comes across as a very down-to-earth and caring person, and one can practically hear that distinctive (and delightful) "Cockney" accent as one reads!When I finished the book, I felt, quite honestly, like I'd just finished a lovely letter from a dear friend.Very highly recommended to fans of AYBS? or of Eastenders. ... This previously unpublished diary is the best surviving firsthand account of life in Civil War-era Atlanta. Bookseller Samuel Pearce Richards (1824-1910) kept a diary for sixty-seven years. This volume excerpts the diary from October 1860, just before the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln, through August 1865, when the Richards family returned to Atlanta after being forced out by Sherman's troops and spending a period of exile in New York City. The Richardses were among the last Confederate loyalists to leave Atlanta. Great book for V:DA
This book is just packed full of information. It is one of those books that drew me to Vampire to begin with. Great detail about the period, how vampires fit into it. How to play a vampire knight. Religion and how both vampiric knight and also mortal ones view it.

The book itself is a fun read, not just filled with rules but flavour to make the game better. Some of the concepts could be used in any game that uses knights.

Well worth the money. My only complaint is the art needed to be a bit better.

Powerful Vampires
This is one great book, but you need the good players too. Think of a vampire walking under the sun and not getting aggravated damage, just lethal. A vampire with increased power and disciplines as well as being only lethally damaged by fire, not aggravated. However, it is compensated by the vampire duties and by those above them in the knighthood order. And yet, it is not only about the order of the bitter ashes, but about everything on chivalry. If you like the via equitus... this book is for you.

Refreshing change of pace for the Kindred
I am quite impressed with this book.In the tradition of Wolves of the Sea, White Wolf has really done their homework on this one.Not only does it contain much relevant information about historically existing knightlyorders (such as the Knights Templar), it also contains information abouthow kindred manipulate and even become them.Most importantly, the Orderof the Bitter Ashes is detailed.The Order has a duty to destroy infidels,protect the holy, redeem the wicked, and capture the holy relics of oldfor...posterity.The memebers, due to a unique embrace involving the HolyGrail, also have several new powers, among them being a limited ability toregenerate blood without feeding, and some resistance to fire and sunlight. Though they might be the most noble of the Kindred, there are still manymoral dilemmas to play out with them.I get a real Indiana Jones and theLast Crusade feeling from this book.If you enjoy this sort of mood mixedwith the gothic horror of Vampire: Dark Ages, this is a must have for you. My only complaint is that there is not a single mention of the one clanthat most fits the knightly stereotype: the Salubri.Maybe I am justpartial to the Salubri, but I think that they should not have beenoverlooked here.Still, the book is marvelous.

Good book for the line
The first impresion i had upon this book was: "why bother with something so simple". But upon reading the five chapters and the appendix i was hooked on the idea. I also played for six years Truncheonsand Flagons so the fantasy setting is no strange to me, whoever when youreview the possilities to play a vampire knight the ideas arise (bad punsorry). They explain in chapter one the whole concept of chivalry inmedieval Europe, but the best chapter is the second where they explain howto do it and the fifth where players get their chances at playing one. Newmerits and flaws (i really liked the "woman in disguise" flaw, alot of opportunities there). They also give you a brief history of afictional vampiric knight order for those who like ready to play NPC.Overall a good read, on the gaming side a good sourcebook with goodinformation for both storytellers and players.

Kindred of the Round Table
This Dark Age Supplement for Vampire is one great read. What I liked about this book is that it gave historical view of the codes and conducts of chivalry, and the sociteies of the canite knighthoods. Whitewolf'seyecatching artwork in its shades of black white, catch the feel of theDark Ages and creates a good atmosphere for the book. For those who playVampire: TDA, this books holds are real treat as it details the "GrailKnights" briefly mentioned in previous books. They are something morethan you typical Cainite Knight. In Dying to Get High, noted sociologist Wendy Chapkis and Richard J. Webb investigate one community of seriously-ill patients fighting the federal government for the right to use physician-recommended marijuana. Based in Santa Cruz, California, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) is a unique patient-caregiver cooperative providing marijuana free of charge to mostly terminally ill members. For a brief period in 2004, it even operated the only legal non-governmental medical marijuana garden in the country, protected by the federal courts against the DEA.

Shame on America!
Dying to Get High for the most part concentrates on the story of a medical Marijuana collective in California. It more or less sickens me the harrassment these people went through for growing something that helps people who have serious illnesses and giving it away to them more or less for free. The therapeutic uses of Marijuana is something big Pharma is scared to death of. You have a "drug" that is helpful in many ways and no matter how hard they have tried over the years, they can't seem to find any health problems that arise from smoking Marijuana. However many if not most of the drugs that big Pharma pushes have serious side effects and absolutely will damage your health in both the long and short term. Besides that many Americans, mainly because of the influence of Christianity, have this idea that pleasure is evil and will do anything possible to keep people from feeling good. Most likely Marijuana will be decriminalized in California soon but I predict the criminal United States federal government/courts will step in and violate the constitution yet again.

I have spent the past 4 years helping out at the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana and in fact I am the current Webmaster for wamm.org. This book is worth reading if you are interested in any aspect of herbal remedies, cannabis, medicine, sociology, science, drugs, welfare, drug guides or pharmacology. The personal accounts are accurate and heartwarming. Many of the people who Chapkis and Webb interview have since passed. Its about time somebody told their story and exposed the injustice perpetrated upon this healing plant and upon WAMM in particular. Thank you again and again for a job well done. Buy this book and Chapkis/Webb have generously agreed that 30% of all sales will go directly back to WAMM. This book was a labor of love and it shows.

gripping account
This book is extraordinarily readable and very engaging.The interviews with patients and caregivers are informative and moving, the analysis is right on target, and the many photos give the book an additional layer of texture.I thought I was already well-informed on this subject but I learned an enormous amount from reading this book.

Adventure Calls
Farley's Follies (as the author renames this collection in his foreword) is an enchanting encounter with our Northern Neighbors.After the introduction of the sailing librarian father, and his floating boat-mobile, I was thoroughly locked into the magical land of travel via armchair.Clever illustrations could have (should have?) included a map as these stories take the reader all over Canada: Ontario, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and the tundra of Hudson Bay.Depression refugees, trading the re-invented fishing boat for the prairie ark/schooner, pet owls, a magic mutt, naturalist training, an artic expedition, sailing adventures, amazingly tolerant and encouraging parents, and letters home from WW2, the reader watches the man emerge in this an exceptional compilation.-Mamalinda

A great introduction to Mowat's work
Like most Americans, I had never heard of Farley Mowat until I made the association of the Disney film "Never Cry Wolf" with his name on a book spine one day.I loved the movie, so I figured I might as well try out the book.

I adored Never Cry Wolf, but you often hear that a writerhas one good book in him (or her), and after that it is all downhill. Furthermore, I looked in the library catalog and Mowat had dozens oftitles!I had no idea which ones to try, they had odd titles!So I pickedup this reader, to get an idea which of the titles I might want to pickout.

After reading this collection, I decided I wanted to read them all. Mowat is simply the best Canadian writer, and one of the top of thiscentury, in my humble opinion.I have now read five of his books, and mycollection continues to grow.Even the books that are represented aschildren's books (like The Dog Who Wouldn't Be) are a joy to adults aswell.

Mowat has the keen eye of observation that Mark Twain had, butwithout the viciousness of the satire... he is much more coy and subtle inhis musings on families and nature.Many of his works involve the Arcticnorth, Saskatchewan, the high seas, and animals; but I have yet to find apoorly written chapter in any of his works.

If you want some proof thatMowat is worth buying, pick up this Reader and see for yourself.I read afew small portions to my writers club as samples of excellent writing, andthey loved it.It reads smoothly, like a storyteller would speak, like aGarrison Keilor tale.

He is a controversial figure, is my understanding. Purportedly, he is not allowed to visit the United States, because in onebook he claimed to shoot his rifle at overflying US warplanes.Who knowsif this is true; Mowat admits to a bit of freedom in embellishing a tale;which is only right, since it is more fun that way.Don't worry aboutthese details, just read some of it and enjoy it. ... A must read for new an old fans alike
The third in a collection of 4 (as of the time of this writing) this hardbound collection is a must have for all fans of the Elfquest comic series. Reprinted in its original full size and in full color, the hard bound binding makes this particular collection a must have for collectors who wish to share the Elfquest story with future generations.

Elfquest is a comic originally created in 1879 which focused on a tribe of fierce and strong elves called the Wolfriders. Richard Pini crafts an amazing story focusing on Cutter, the Chief of the Wolfriders as he and his tribe are forced to flee their ancient home and in doing so discovers more about himself and his race that he ever dreamed possible. Wendy Pini draws for us a unique world filled with elves, trolls, faeries, and humans and breaths life and novelty into them still unseen in most of the fantasy genre since.

Elfquest - Archives, Volume 3 focuses once again upon Cutter on his quest to find more Elfkind. But does Cutter and his tribe of Wolfriders find more than he can handle when they come across the elves who call themselves The Gliders? The quest continues as Cutter and his tribe and loved ones search for the High Ones. As I noted in my review for the first volume (Elfquest Archives Vol. 1), these archives are massively colorful, detailed, and immersive - with artistic drawings that draw the reader in and a sensitive and intelligent handling of all subject matter. Volume 3 takes off immediately after Volume 2 (Elfquest Archives Vol. 2), as Cutter and his people are forced into a confrontation with the powerful "Bird Tribe" of elves.

The Wolfriders, as we have seen, are close kith and kin to their wolves, and these Bird Riders present an interesting contrast. Similarly to the Wolfriders, they are deeply distressed when their mounts are wounded or killed; and in an interesting twist, we meet an elf who so wanted to be a bird that he was willing to give up much of his lovely form in order to gain wings. Yet these Bird Riders are cold and cruel, headed by a villainess who tortures the Wolfriders for pleasure and seeks to undermine her lord and lifemate at ever possible turn.

Interestingly, the point is made that the Wolfrider elves are related closely to the Bird Riders, despite their differences, and - like the recognition between Cutter and Leetah that symbolized the relationship between the tribes of the Wolfriders and the Sun People - there is a newly recognized couple that will similarly symbolize the interactions between Wolfriders and this new Bird Rider tribe. The Pinis shy away from easy answers and happy endings, though, as the strained relationship between the two tribes demonstrate over the course of this novel.

I've noted before that it's hard to know how to classify ElfQuest within a genre. Although Volume 3 doesn't lack for tense action, notably in the tribulations of the captured riders and in the skirmishes between the two tribes, there is a greater focus on philosophy and emotion. The villainess of the novel is particularly fascinating, and she is used to great effect to explore the origins of the Wolfriders, and Leetah's earlier reservations towards her lifemate. The new recognition romance is beautifully done, in such a way that handles prejudice and differences in culture neatly. Both of the participants come to understand that they have something meaningful to offer to one another, while never losing sight of those supportive loved ones who have been there behind the scenes all this time. And, once again, there will be differences of opinion on whether this volume is appropriate for non-adults, but I still believe that you'll likely not find a more thoughtful approach to the subject matter.

Because I'm a new fan, I can't speak to how this archive compares to the original old issues. Snippets of the old issues are included in the beginning and ending of each archive; sometimes in black-and-white panels, others in full color portraits and covers. I believe, however, that the spirit of the original was perfectly preserved, and I'm grateful for this availability of this issue.

Fun and very entertaining!
Cutter is determined to find the rest of his tribe, and save them from whoever has taken them. However, when he finds that the wolfriders have been taken by flying elves, he is very surprised. These powerful elves claim to be the long-lost High Ones, and their powers seem to confirm that. But, there is something strange going on, something unseen, something strange and sinister.

In 1978, Wendy and Richard Pini started self-publishing the Elfquest saga in comic book form. The rest, as they say, is history! This graphic novel contains the third five issues of Elfquest (11-15), and is quite an entertaining read. I really enjoyed the story (I love stories of elves and magic!), and thought that the illustration work was quite excellent. Some people have criticized the coloring, but I thought that it was quite good, a little bright like older comics, but that is what it is.

Overall, I found this to be a fun and very entertaining read, and I give it two thumbs up!

A study in cartoon art
Wendy Pini is indeed a great artist, and the story represented in the four Archives-series is beautiful and original. I have grown up with these stories, and will probably never get bored with the simple, yet original, sweet and exiting story, together with the lovely drawings of a seldomly talented hand. Beautifully written, lyrical, mythical.
How do you rate something like this? Wendy Pini has an exquisite sense of pacing, a master's command of the English language, and a grand story to tell. Without hesitation I would recommend any of her works.

This is the first book in the series. Told in text form, it stands easily on its own -- people who don't have or want the graphic art series won't miss anything here. It tells the story of a band of elves who are persecuted out of their home and must find a new one before they die in the desert. Along the way they encounter a new band of elves, hostile trolls, and some even more hostile humans. Sure, they're elves and they're cute, but these elves have courage, heart, and compassion -- they are as accessible and understandable as we are, metaphors for what we wish we could be.

Unlike many novelizations of graphic art, this book is accessible to newcomers and doesn't leave out important things. It expands some parts of the graphic art series, adding details like background, private thoughts, and extra interactions.

Really good
As a hardcore Elfquestfan I really like the whole audio version of "Journey to Sorrow's end" and as I read the Elfquest novels first I was already familiar with the third-person-view the tapes are written in. The only thing I don't really like are the voices of some of the elves. But everything else- the story, the characteres, the style... makes it wonderful!

Although the story is fantastical in nature, it holds the universality of wanting a place to belong, fate, overcoming fears, and the conflict between man and the unknown.Wendi and Richard's textual adaptations of theirfirst five comics offer a new look to the story, and a great deal moredetail.Written from a third-person view, it allows the reader to feellike a part of the group, while not having to feel like their suffering allhe hardships that the elves feel. The biggest things that drew meto this book, were the characters.They are so complexly simple, that it'shard to remember, sometimes, that they were originally ink and paperdrawings, telling their stories through pictures, as well as words. Secondarily, I was drawn by the world, itself.How clearly and vividlyit's described has captured me from the first time I even heard of Abode,distinctly the fact that it was inhabited by such creatures as the elvesand their bonded wolves.I would recommend this book to anyone whoenjoyed realms of magic, love, fantasy, trial, or challenge.It holds allof these, and much, much more within it's comforting arms, and isdefinitely an excellent escape from reality.

BREATHTAKING!!!!!
I stumbled across this novel on accident: I remember thinking, "how complex can a story about some elves be???" Was I wrong!!! These elves ain't about no cookies, okay??? They have a rich heritage and stunningcharacterizations, and--like the humans they clash with--have the normalrange of bonds and emotions. I love the characters, and their quest to findtheir origin isn't unlike ours. If you want a rich, classic story thatentertains on all levels, or if you want to see what the big fuss is aboutthe Pinis, this is a great place to start. STUNNING!!!!
