Product Description
How are recent policy changes affecting how scientists engage with the public? How are new technologies influencing how scientists disseminate their work and knowledge? How are new media platforms changing the way the public interact with scientific information?

Investigating Science Communication in the Information Age is a collection of newly-commissioned chapters by leading science communication scholars. It addresses current theoretical, practical and policy developments in science communication, including recent calls for greater openness and transparency; and engagement and dialogue on the part of professional scientists with members of the public. It provides a timely and wide-ranging review of contemporary issues in science communication, focusing on two broad themes.

The first theme critically reviews the recent dialogic turn and ascendant branding of 'public engagement with science'. It addresses contemporary theoretical and conceptual issues facing science communication researchers, and draws on a range of methodological approaches and examples.

The second theme, popular media, examines recent trends in the theory and research of these forms of science communication. It includes contemporary accounts of the study of 'traditional' forms of popular media, including television and newspapers, examining how they are produced, represented and consumed. This theme also documents examples where novel forms of popular media are challenging researchers to re-think how they approach these forms of science communication.

A companion volume, Practising Science Communication in the Information Age, provides an ideal introduction to anyone wishing to reflect on the practices of contemporary science communication. ... Read more

Product Description
Emerging in the 1980s, Richard Prince combines the media of painting, artist's books and photography to offer peculiar views into the margins of American culture.

Prince's highly idiosyncratic subject matter - such as one-line jokes in the style of 1960s cartoons, Marlboro cowboys and motorcycle gangs - is central to his work. In the late 1970s Prince was working for the cutting services of Time Life publications in New York, and began to re-photograph advertisements and compose his own pictures from this highly-familiar 'pop' imagery. Recently his work has taken an unexpected turn, and the artist has emerged as a consummate painter, producing some of the most unusual and admired works in the current painting scene. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey
This is a comprehensive overview of Richard Prince's artwork to date and shows him as one of the most important and enduring artists from the 1980's. A child of Warhol, Richard Prince has taken pop art and conceptual art to the next progression and has made the art world rethink our notions of what art is.

5-0 out of 5 stars A princely catalogue
Since I will not be lucky enough to see the exhibition at the Guggenheim, I am very happy to be able to say that this is one of the best art books I have ordered so far. It lists and illustrates the bulk of Prince's major series (the original ad pictures from the 1970's, stripped of all text, the cowboy photos, the joke paintings, the nurse paintings, the latest 2006 "De Kooning" paintings which are a complete discovery, and many more). The illustrations are wonderful and do justice to the scope and depth of the artist's oeuvre.

The book starts with an enlightening essay by curator Nancy Spector who shows how Prince's appropriation art resulted in one of the most profound analyses of contemporary American culture. Another valuable chapter of the book is a collection of interviews of various personalities (collectors, intellectuals, magazine editors, writers, cartoonists...)who have been in some way or other in contact with Richard Prince and his works and who give their own often sensible and knowledgeable opinion on it.

Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3/5
The synergy between Japanese anime and American pop culture is explored in this book, a companion piece to the traveling exhibition currently in installation at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. My Reality examines the role of anime on modern art; in particular, there's a technology-friendly bent to anime, which the book asserts has been assimilated in the technique of "serious" artists in both hemispheres. The book, much like the exhibition, touches upon the common anime themes of high technology, aliens, cyborgs and so on, but through a series of essays, draws a link between these and real-life themes such as gender roles and popular and consumer culture. Showcasing artwork from emerging artists like Takashi Murakami, Mariko Mori, and Paul McCarthy, this book is an interesting, although way too brief, commentary on art and culture in the face of technology and the future, as well as providing additional depth to the context of this intriguing exhibition.

1-0 out of 5 stars ADisappointment
This is a this book of three essays with some just sort of interesting photos and illustrations. I was expecting lots of great Anime and collectable art that is inspired by Manga and Anime, but this is a companion to a traveling exhibit of art inspired by Anime and Manga. The art is just ok, nothing really interesting, and the essays are dull as if written for a thesis. There are way too many footnotes, and phrases like "ontological insecurity".I just don't see this type of art as high-brow art. Skip this book. ... Read more

Richard Nixon instituted environmental reforms and substantially improved U.S. relations with China. However, these accomplishments were overshadowed by his administration's slow handling of America's withdrawal from the war in Vietnam and the infamous Watergate scandal, which ultimately forced Nixon to resign rather than face impeachment. This anthology explores the virtues and flaws of one of America's most controversial presidents. (20010301) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good start to the end of the world
I've read & enjoyed a few other great books in this genre (the Road, Lucifer's Hammer) and I loved listening to Plague Year. The story material is, of course, pretty dark. The ramifications of the plague are well thought out as we're told of what remains of the world from multiple characters' points of view. In addition to following individuals' struggle for survival we learn about the technological, military, & political battles that are taking place in the thin air.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plague Year Delivers!
I read a lot and every so often a book comes along that just makes me say "WOW"!Plague Year was just such a book.I love post-apocalypse fiction, but all too often the story has too many conveniences that advance the plot despite making no sense. This book avoids most of them. The nano-plague survivors aren't stereotype heroes who miraculously manage to stay healthy despite zero training. They are a bunch of average joes who got lucky and are hanging on to survival by their fingernails! They screw up and often make things worse for themselves. The rest of the world doesn't nobly decide to work together to save the day, they squabble and fight over what little is left, refusing to see how pointless this is.
To me, that's most of what makes the story so chillingly memorable.Reading it made me realize that yes, even after 99% of the world had died, people would continue to be selfish and stupid. While there are some PA stereotypes (the politicians are all evil, the military is inflexible and can't think for itself despite what they see), they are pretty few and far between.
I have to disagree with all the reviews that call it 'summer fun'.Though it might not be as deep, for sheer creepy entertainment, it compares favorably with King's 'The Stand'.BTW the nano's high altitude weakness seems stupid if you are just reading the plot synopsis or reviews, but ultimately has a perfectly sensible explanation.

4-0 out of 5 stars The ugly side of survival!
Plauge Year was a surprising good read. A nice change from the usual end of world scenario and the author didn't pull any punches. Surviving in this world really is brutal and anything goes for the cast. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and beleiveable in that I'm still not sure if the "heroes" can be considered good guys in the end or not.

Anyway I liked it enough to read twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, fast paced read
I picked this book up for something to read on a plane ride and was very glad I did.My only complaint would be the flight ended too soon!In addition to all of the action that Carlson packs into the book, the characters he creates are what is most compelling.Cam is an easy hero to like as he struggles to survive in a world where nearly everything and everyone has been destroyed. However the most compelling character by far is Ruth, who appears to be safely tucked away in the space station. However, being one of the few remaining people educated in nano tech she realizes she needs to return to earth to try to help. She risks her life in the improvised landing and by returning to the ground where the machine plague is out of control. Her drive to find an answer to the plague and devise a cure or vaccine moves the plot forward and keeps you rooting for her to succeed. While I thought Ruth's return would relegate Cam to merely a supporting role, happily that is not the case.Cam and Ruth work together and their interpersonal story begins to become as important as everything else.If you want a good page turning thriller, this is the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting premise, terrible execution
I picked this one up in an airport as reading material on a 4 hr flight, the premise seemed very interesting but the actual story left a lot to be desired. I had a very difficult time separating the characters, leading me to flip back to the character's introduction to remember who was who and why they acted the way they did. The ending is just preposterous and felt like the author was rushed by a deadline. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars They STAY hilarious.I wore out the last set!
I was making an all night drive down I-40 and I was sleepy when I started. I stopped at a truckstop in Little Rock and found these, or who knows, maybe God led me to them cause they kept me wide awake all night long. You'll never buy this many of your own chuckles, peels of laughter, and gallons of giggles for this little money - EVER - again in your whole life. That makes this tape set the best deal on the net.

I'm buying a new set for myself and several sets for christmas gifts. But let me warn you, don't ever give out a tape from your own set because no one ever returns them!

Excerpt: Jeffrey Scott "Jeff" Buckley (November 17, 1966 May 29, 1997), raised as Scotty Moorhead, was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was the son of Tim Buckley, also a musician. After a decade as guitarist-for-hire in Los Angeles, Buckley gained popularity in the early 1990s by playing cover songs at venues in Manhattan's East Village, such as Sin-é, gradually focusing more on his own material. After rebuffing much interest from record labels and his father's manager Herb Cohen, he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. Over the following two years, the band toured widely to promote the album, including concerts in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia. In 1996, they stopped touring and made sporadic attempts to record his second album in New York with Tom Verlaine as producer. In 1997, Buckley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to resume work on the album, to be titled My Sweetheart the Drunk, recording many four-track demos while also playing weekly solo shows at a local venue. While awaiting the arrival of his band from New York, he drowned during a spontaneous evening swim--fully clothed--in the Wolf River, when he was caught in the wake of a passing boat. Product Description
A tribute to the most revered railroad photographer of our time.

To the true rail fan, Richard Steinheimer is an authentic hero, the best of the best. A pioneer in train photography, Steinheimer lived through and documented the railroad's heyday and its decline. He is one of very few photographers who appreciate the aesthetics of all locomotives, from steam engines to the latest diesel-powered behemoths. He has a particular fondness for the landscape of the American West, and many of his images situate trains in the larger geography and culture of the time. Known for taking pictures at night, in bad weather, and from risky perches on top of moving train platforms, Steinheimer has an enormous creativity and productivity. This, the first full-length celebration of his work, presents 160 of his duotone images, with an introduction by Jeff Brouws. ... Read more

Splendid picture choices from Steinheimers extensive work. Beautifully reproduced. The captioning is spare but fleshed out in the appendix. Very few errors. Best of all are the whole scenes depicted rather than a collection of 3/4 wedge shots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stein is a great photographer
Richard Steinheimer has often been described as the "dean of railroad photographers" and I see no reason to argue. It takes an artist to convey well what Stein's images in this book convey: the relation of man to machine, the romantic quality of machinery (why railfans love trains) and the beauty and harmony of man's mechanical devices with nature.

This is a very good book, reasonably priced, and serves as a showcase for some of Stein's classic work.

"DW" critiqued this book because of the quality of reproduction.I agree it is not what it could be, but some of these photographs have appeared in other publications with reproduction quality far inferior to what appears here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommon composition of captured railroad action in B&W photographs
Richard Steinheimer has captured in black and white the everyday life and romance of railroading in a bygone era with an incite that earns him a prominent place in recorded railroad history. As a rail buff and life member of the Waterford Township Historical and Preservation Society in Waterford, Michigan, I recommend that anyone who is drawn to the sound and thrill of railroad action should experience atleast one of Richard's publications to place a picture in their minds eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars more than trains
The photographs capture more than trains, but never less. They capture the beauty of the land that trains opened up.They bring us people, both on and near the trains. His sense of composition draws us into the scene and makes us want to look at it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a passion for trains, you'll have a passion for this book.
Black and white photography's superior ability to communicate both detail and atmosphere is dramatically demonstrated by Richard Steinheimer's A Passion for Trains.

This is one of the most totally satisfying railroad books I own, and I own over a hundred.

Steinheimer has a unique ability to display both the railroad and the faces and geography of its environment. Landscape and nature over conspire against railroaders, as Steinheimer frequently demonstrates in A Passion for Trains, yet the weather never quite overwhelms the trains or the men who keep them moving.

The photographs contain detail you can just about feel. Text on most pages is limited to a single line identifying the location. Thumbnails at the back of the book contain an additional paragraph about each photo.

If you have a passion for trains, you'll love this book. It covers a wide variety of railroads, geographic environments, and weather. Many of the photos will soon become your favorites. In fact, I considered getting a second copy, just to be able to frame some of the pages!

The term "coffee table book" is often used derogatorily. Yet, what's wrong with a book so fine that you'll want to keep it on your coffee table where you, and your friends, can frequently enjoy it? ... Read more

Product Description
Jeff Roberts’s poems know physics and landscapes. They know too how those things are inextricably connected—the large and the small; and whether we’re aware of this in our day-to-day lives or not, Mr. Roberts’s poems are. A poem that knows something we don’t —or one that reminds us of what we’ve always known but have forgotten—is the poem that connects or reconnects us with how we understand ourselves in the world, at times as participants and at others times as witnesses. Roberts give us both of these perspectives and does so without editorial comment about which is the more rewarding or beneficial. Roberts’s poems bring us to a place where we remember and might reclaim the kind of experience that both aches and heals at once—the thing we come to poems for, in the end . . . a lost wisdom that poetry more than anything else tries to give back to us.—Paul HaenelFarewell, Goodbye, Wave GoodbyeWashington Writers’ Publishing House ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Widely published and experienced poet Jeff Roberts brings poetry lovers a delight
Widely published and experienced poet Jeff Roberts brings poetry lovers a delight with "Chatter in the Canopy". His solid work with the English language is enhanced by great black and white art work from Dick Roberts and Dog Heinlein. An exquisite blend of art and verse, "Chatter in the Canopy" should be a consideration for many a poetry fan. "Seduction": It's the sand in your voice that holds me./That and the moonlight buttering your long ribs.//You can shout into the wind through cupped hands./I can smell the salt and wet canvas.//What if I surrender to your rolling, black valleys -/To the tops of mountains kissed away?//When we collapse, flat-faced and ordinary,/On tar-colored foam and a dead skate-what then?

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm, Accessible, has life to it
J.Roberts poetry is a delightful surprise. This collection of poems is a pleasure to read and re-read from cover to cover. In his work, the poet captures the essence of a moment, an instance, in an interaction with others and with nature. "Cold Shower," for example, gracefully moves through nuances of connection and through a shift of mood, feeling and intention. As I read, it is as if I am absorbing the contents of the poems; it is a sensate feeling; a connection; leaving me touched and moved and right there with the poet. His images of the natural world are lovely; recognizable; pleasurable to feel and touch. His work is warm and has life to it.
The illustrations are also lovely and compliment and strengthen the poems. "Chatter..." has become a favorite of mine; easy to pick up for a few minutes a day; and also, a favorite gift for my friends.
My hat is off to a kind, gentle, insightful, engaging poet, JRoberts.

5-0 out of 5 stars great new poetry

I loved this work. Jeff Roberts has a unique mind - gorgeously precise and filled with whimsy. I smiled my way through many poems, but Roberts doesn't back away from darkness for a second. He is fiercely observant, honest and keenly sensitive, without self-pity. With an arsenal of craft at his call, he never abuses it. There is wonderful absurdity and wit in his work. Roberts'poem THE BOATMAN is an instant classic. For me this was a delightful book, very heartfelt, with illustrations filled with the same odd, unforgettable charm as the poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarded
I wasn't looking for this book, it found me, and it's efforts to find me I am very grateful for.
Each individual poem and illustration could stand alone proudly, but the combination of all, in this fine book, keep my hands reaching back for it on their own.
I find myself wanting to turn the page to see what great talent is next but also wanting to stay and reread the poem that I just read and to absorb the combination of the poem with the accompanied illustration one more time.
Great stuff!Thank you Mr. Roberts

5-0 out of 5 stars Real flesh and blood human experience
This little book caught me by surprise in how the author allows the reader to touch his experience quite intimately. I had not expected that. Nor did I expect the mix of his ribald humor with his deep love of nature and sense of spirit. He says "for if we have time" (where I might have said "if we are lucky"), "The tumbling will give us a texture that transcends the standards by which we are judged."

Why, The Rookery alone is worth the price of admission. Read these poems. Your life will be the richer for having done so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations builds good music foundations
Kim Chamberlain
For band directors, private instrumental teachers and students, Foundations For Superior Performace: Warmup Techniques is a must have. I have used the warm ups, chorales, and scale studies with my advanced students and with my beginners as well. This book came to my attention when I visited the middle school band director of one of my clarinet students. It was obvious that the students in this band program were a step ahead of the rest. The warm-ups have a lot to do with this.

Intonation, breathing and articulation are immediately addressed by using these exercises. I even purchased a trombone copy for my son and a flute copy for my daughter so we could play together at home. 5stars for sure!
