Review of the previous edition: "A model of excellence in the art of reference volume publishing... Every public and school library... should acquire this treasure. It will remain the standard for many years to come."
- Dr. James A. Clifton, Department of Anthropology, Western Michigan University

This superb, fully illustrated reference offers the most up-to-date and essential facts on the identity, kinships, locations, populations and cultural characteristics of some 400 separately identifiable peoples native to the North American continent, both living and extinct, from the Canadian Arctic to the Rio Grande.

The concise information is organized for easy use and covers all cultural/geographical regions: the Northeastern Woodlands, Southeastern Woodlands, Plains and Prairie, Plateau, Great Basin, California, Southwest, Northwest Coast, Subarctic and Arctic. Tribes are grouped by linguistic family. The spiritual beliefs and the role of Native Americans in history and modern culture are addressed in detail.

More than 300 color and archival photographs, 21 regional maps and a dazzling portfolio of over 100 specially commissioned color illustrations give a dramatic visual introduction to the vast range of Native American culture. Population and settlement trends based on recent census figures paint detailed portraits of all officially recognized tribes. Appendices include the Powwow Trail and a list of museums holding Native American artifacts (including the new Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian).

This is one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date and useful references on the subject and an important record of Native American peoples.

I love to use workbooks that are written to support learning from books, audios, and videos. This workbook and book by the same title Total Heart Health for Women: A Life-Enriching Plan for Physical & Spiritual Well-Being work well together to reinforce the learning. This book is not just about physical wellness, but about mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. While it shows a bent toward Christianity, it is accessible to everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Long Overdue
Richard Aldington (1892-1962) is today one of the lesser-read poets of WW1. His often oblique allusions, sensuous frankness and predominant use of free verse make a body of poetry very different from the standard pieces encountered in classrooms and mainstream anthologies.

Excepting the omission of a few tangential works, Michael Copp's edition brings together all the poems in which Aldington commented on the war. Welcome finds include such moving love poems as "Reverie" (addressed to Aldington's wife, the poet H.D.), sharp vignettes like "Bombardment", and poems such as "A Village" in which small beauties provide the salve for wartime misery. Aldington's preoccupations throughout his literary career - love, suffering, stoicism, and a pagan reverence for the natural world - are clearly shown. Mr Copp's full introduction furthermore provides a useful synthesis of recent scholarship on Aldington, his war writings and his relationship to Imagism.

The book as a whole stands as a quality tribute and important re-introduction to a strangely neglected writer. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
A pioneering sex manual and manifesto on free love. "Love is one of the chief sources of human happiness; its state among making requires improvement, and better means of enjoying it are requires to be known. The following pages have been written with that and with no other view, and the Publisher places his motives for judgement in the hands of the young, the middle-aged, the healthy, the happy, the virtuous, and the sensible part of the community of both sexes." -- Preface, What is Love? (1826). Richard Carlile, a leading figure in early-nineteenth-century radical London, was notorious for his blend of republicansim, religious free though and libertarianism. In the pamphlet What is Love?, he presented his most sustained statement of 'free love', advocating not only honesty and equality for both sexes in matters of love and sex, but also advice and encouragement in the use of birth control. With an introduction by Michael Bush which places the pamphlet in the wider context of nineteenth-century metropolitan radicalism, and a witty preface which view it as a forerunner to today's sex manuals, What is Love? is both a fascinating historical document and a piece of propaganda arguably as pertinent today as it was in the 1820s. ... Product Description

I.B.Tauris is delighted to announce the reissue in paperback in three volumes of the definitive, most comprehensive edition, in the finest translations and fully annotated, of the writings of this great filmmaker, theorist and teacher of film -- and one of the most original aesthetic thinkers of the twentieth century.

The name of Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948) is synonymous with the idea of montage, as exemplified in his silent classics such as The Battleship Potemkin (1925) and October (1927). In the 1930s his style changed, partly to accommodate the arrival of sound, and his ideas on audio-visual counterpoint developed. Between 1937 and 1940 he elaborated his ideas on montage in a series of essays, most of which remained unpublished until after his death and which are published in English for the first time in this volume.  They present the essence of Eisenstein’s thinking on cinema and aesthetics more generally and reveal him as one of the most significant philosophers of art of the twentieth century.

Product Description

This new volume contains four previously unpublished lectures that Feynman gave to students preparing for exams. With characteristic flair, insight and humor, Feynman discusses topics students struggle with and offers valuable tips on solving physics problems. An illuminating memoir by Matthew Sands — who originally conceived The Feynman Lectures on Physics — gives a fascinating insight into the history of Feynman’s lecture series and the books that followed. This book is rounded off by relevant exercises and answers by R. B. Leighton and R. E. Vogt, originally developed to accompany the Lectures on Physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inessential but Entertaining Reading
As a Feynman completist, I felt compelled to pick up this latest addition to the canon of one of science's greatest expositors, which is made up largely of excised review lectures from the course that generated some of the most highly regarded physics books ever printed (The Feynman Lectures on Physics including Feynman's Tips on Physics: The Definitive and Extended Edition).

Whereas those lectures are voyages of discovery that make the reader feel that he is a true participant in the enterprise of science, those contained in this volume are generally more straightforward, and the reader is again but a lowly student ... albeit a student of one of the subject's greatest teachers. But that switch in mood is part of this book's appeal, for even as the reader trades the laboratory for the classroom in some of the more mundane aspects of problem solving, Feynman does so along with him.In fact, Feynman's admissions of the variety of mistakes he made while working out problems (some of which he admits to having to do several times in order to get them right while preparing for the lecture) made for some of the most entertaining and encouraging parts of the book.Feynman, one of the 20th century's greatest physicists, is grinding it out along with us, revealing himself to be vulnerable to the same little pitfalls that can haunt and discourage students in any hard science.

Beyond that, there are some true practical gems in the book, including a wonderfully simple method of differentiation that I had not seen presented Feynman's way until I read this book.Rounding out the lectures are some problems and solutions (not presented by Feynman) that solidify the book's practical aim.None of it is absolutely essential, and the book is arguably a bit pricey for its length. But it is certainly a worthwhile read, further enhanced, perhaps, by imagining Feynman's Far Rockaway accent as you read to make the experience of being his student seem a little more real.

5-0 out of 5 stars feynman lecture
I was there and heard these things in the early 60's.the lectures are still just as fascinating now as they were then, although I have forgotten most or all of the math that went with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Leftovers
Different parts of this book will appeal to different readers.
There is a lot of information about how the book came to be published, providing insight into Feynman's style.
There are the actual lectures, delivered mostly to students that were having trouble in the physics class, including the observation, mentioned in another review, that half the students have to be below average, even at Cal Tech.
These can help you improve your physical intuition.
There is a lecture on applied physics, covering gyroscopes and accelerometers
in navigation systems.
The numerical coefficients have probably been improved since then,
but the presentation is excellent.
There is also a collection of problems to practice on.
These seemed much better, much more realistic, much more interesting, than those I solved as a physics minor decades ago.

I hope a culinary analogy will help potential readers understand this book.
Yes this book is a bunch of leftovers.
Some chef's leftovers are better than most cooks' best efforts.
Feynman was a master chef in physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars rummaging to put together one last [?] book by Feynman
Sometimes when a prominent author dies, his estate might authorise someone to go through his notes. In the hope of finding unpublished material that is of enough quality to be published. This could necessitate some editorial or extra authorial assistance. Think perhaps of fiction authors. Where final stories trickle out in the years after their deaths.

Precisely the case here. The 2 other authors of this book, Gottlieb and Leighton, have rummaged through Feynman's records, and found these 4 "lost" lectures. In case you're wondering, his 2 children have approved this venture. As perhaps the last new book you are likely to see with Richard Feynman's name on it.

Of the chapters, the most interesting is really the introduction, that describes the circumstances by which the book came about. The actual physics is well done, of course. But this is not one of Feynman's major works. Let's be clear about it. Think of it as marginalia. An addendum to his Lectures on Physics.

The cover's photo shows him as young and in good health. Unlike when I saw him in his last years, ravaged by cancer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feynmann on Physics
Firstly, ANYTHING by Richard Feynman is compulsive reading.Having said that I was a little bit disappointed because I was expecting some personal tips on his math techniqes. There is an interesting approach to differentiation and some stuff on numerical integration. There is a great deal on gyroscopes. There is a common sense homily to those who have to face the fact that SOMEONE has to be in the lower quartile of a class, and not to get disturbed by this statistical fact. For the few dollars it costs it is well worth it ! ... IN THIS CAPTIVATING, OFTEN HILARIOUS DEBUT MYSTERY, ONE OF THE GREAT COMEDIANS OF OUR TIME BLENDS FACT WITH FICTION, AS LAW & ORDER: SVU'S RICHARD BELZER'S OFF-CAMERA PERSONA COMES TO LIFE ON THE PAGE, EMPLOYING INVESTIGATIVE KNOW-HOW AND COMEDIC TIMING IN EQUAL MEASURE TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A TRUSTED FRIEND.

When Richard Belzer meets Rudy Markovich, nyc medical examiner, for dinner in Brighton Beach, he has little reason to expect anything more than a friendly bull session. But in the next twenty-four hours Belzer finds himself in the middle of a vicious street brawl, splashed across the tabloid headlines as an out-of-control celeb, and fearing for the life of his good pal Rudy -- who police assume is sleeping at the bottom of the East River.

As Belzer finds himself increasingly required to call upon the resources he taps to portray Detective Munch on nbc, he maintains his sense of humor and carries us along on a rollicking ride through the underworld of New York City. With Rudy kidnapped, or worse, it falls to The Belz to track him down and solve the riddle to the vanishing act.

The lives of Detective Munch and Richard Belzer collide and mesh in I Am Not a Cop! as one of America's great comics and TV cops brings all of his talents to bear in book form and provides a triumph of the mystery genre. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, but not a great book
"I Am Not a Cop!" was a good read, a bit of a light read with many literary and movie references. However, it was not up to par with Belzer's previous book "UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Can Believe In", though it was enjoyable reading. It's clear that Belzer is not an experienced mystery writer, though he proves he is knowledgeable in many other areas. The plot was interesting but slow-moving.The plot was a hackneyed, and the ending was a bit of a stretch, delving a little too far into Belzer's conspiracy-filled mind and too far outside of the detective/mystery genre. However, that should not stop you from reading this book at least once.If you're just looking for a little light reading, this book will be both satisfying and enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Light Reading
From my blog review:[...]

Entertainment concepts seem to evolve over the course of a decade, and as the reality experiment has begun to yield the floor it appears that a hybrid sub-genre of "reality fiction" is emerging. In film, we've had My Name Is Bruce [Blu-ray] and in literature, "I Am Not a Cop!"Richard Belzer has crafted a fictitious tale in which he, as himself, is caught up in a mystery involving a missing medical examiner friend who happens to be Russian. (Or is he Ukrainian?)

Fans of The Belz know from his stand-up routine and previous work of non-fiction (UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe) that this is a guy who does his homework when it comes to intricate plots, and he has spun a doozy here. Elements of the plot draw heavily from the history and politics of Russia and the former Soviet states; you don't need to do your own homework, though, because Belzer has made sure that all the information you need to know is presented in an accessible manner throughout this novel.

I have long been an avid, yet admittedly slow, reader and so it is rare that I read anything cover-to-cover in one setting; "I Am Not a Cop!" has earned a spot on that short list. Despite Belzer's years of portraying television's most ubiquitous character, Detective John Munch, "I Am Not a Cop!" is much more a literary descendant of crime noir novels. Not only does Belzer admit as much in his epilogue, but there are frequent references to (and quotes from) them sprinkled throughout the narrative. From start to finish, though, the sarcastic wit of Belzer permeates "I Am Not a Cop!" and I found myself easily envisioning him in character during many passages.

At 272 pages, this is a novel that harkens back to the days of page-turning paperback thrillers meant to be read during a train commute; the kind that Ian Fleming insisted his James Bond stories were. Despite--or perhaps, because of--this, there is one chief complaint I would register with the author. All too often, a turn of phrase is recycled to the point that it becomes distracting. The most glaring culprit is a variation of, "[famous person] would be proud." Saying that these moments took me "out of the book" would be taking it too far--especially given the nature of its premise. Still, they're the kind of thing that one expects an editor to catch and ask the author, "Can we phrase this differently? You used the same expression thirteen pages ago."

Fans of the series in which "Detective Munch" has appeared should not expect any name-dropping or behind-the-scenes glimpses into their production. Despite the fact that Belzer's investigation occurs during an eight day shoot, the actual series and its elements are ambiguous. The only direct allusions are to Mariska Hargitay, in both of which the promise of an autographed photo of her is bartered for cooperation.

While "I Am Not a Cop!" may not be the definitive mystery story of our times, it is fun throughout and sustained by its plot, steeped as it is in real life situations. I cannot guage how a reader unfamiliar with Belzer would enjoy this novel; many of his personality traits and views can be alienating at times (for instance, in 2008, was it really necessary to have five different lines to remind us that he dislikes George W. Bush?). An audiobook reading would be welcomed, though one has not been issued to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique and Entertaining Mystery
The novel, I Am Not a Cop by Richard Belzer was a pleasure to read. In real life, Belzer plays Detective John Munch on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. This story is unique because he also plays the lead as Richard Belzer in a storyline that finds him searching for his missing friend while dealing with criminals including the Russkies and their involvement in the blood diamond trade.

Belzer writes the book from his point of view as he deals with long hours on the set playing Munch, an assistant assigned to keep an eye on him, numerous friends and contacts, and the occasional bad guy who interrupts his day.

Belzer writes with great humor and his side comments and similes are often LOL funny. I found this book a surprisingly worthwhile read.

I Am Not a Cop!: A Novel

3-0 out of 5 stars I Am Not A Cop!
Richard Belzer portrays himself in his novel "I Am Not A Cop" which I thought was a fascinating device. He writes well (there was some witty parts) and it felt like I was there in between film shoots (he plays a cop on TV) watching him try to solve a case he shouldn't have been mingling in. Other than that, it was okay. No real mystery, just a fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars JUST OK, NOT GREAT FICTION
Because it was Belz, I bought the book and dove into it with enthusiasm and definite purpose ofbringing the author to life. He's a very talented man and a good actor, but the mystery genre is not his gig. I enjoyed some of his witty remarks and his references to his movie and TV work. It's really difficult for me to picture him as a tough guy, or a martial arts expert that can take out villains. Words and intelligence are his forte but not being a hard-boiled, fearless dude of the streets, taking on criminals and protecting helpless females.Took me four starts and 4-5 wines before I was able to fInish it...but I did.Enough said. ...
