5-0 out of 5 stars Something I needed....
What first drew me to Molly Ringwald is probably what first drew most to her:The original movies of long ago 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, For Keeps...you know them all. They were part of my growing up.They are etched in the stone that defines my youth and I am forever grateful for the nostalgic affect they have on me.Plus, she looked an awful lot like one of my cousins that was my partner in crime as a kid.You have to love someone that reminds you of the fun times.

Her book came at a moment for me when all the chips of life were scattered on the floor. You know, the time during your late 30's when you still haven't discovered who you want to be when you grow up even though you are essentially already there. One day, in a bored moment wondering the web I decided to see what Molly Ringwald was up to these days. The actress I had always loved must have some happy news to share and there it was....her new book: Getting the Pretty Back.It was like it was meant to be and I say this for sure because ironically enough it wasn't going to be ready until April of 2010 during the month I was ready to head into another year of wrinkles stamped by a new number.I was curious to know how Molly was dealing with these life changes.

Now I will say that this book is not a story about every detail of her life.It is highlights of everything from advice, how to, cooking, and even child rearing. It's a glimpse into Molly's world, her thoughts and the way she's managed to juggle life. And most importantly, it's happy, it's something to make you reflect on who you are and to show you how good life can be.That's how it affected me anyway and I'm sure it will have a positive affect on you too.I highly recommend it.Not only is it an easy read, but the illustrations are incredible. They make you feel prettier just holding the book.

Thank you, Molly. You did a great job!

Great tips - felt like I was chatting with Ms. Ringwald.Confirmed what I already knew but needed a gentle reminder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice from someone who's pretty in pink
Molly Ringwald's self-help book is like a cold lemonade on a hot day: refreshing.Having gracefully transitioned from th e perennial teen idol to a mother and gourmand, Ringwald invites all women of a certain age (she just turned 40) to be " the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident woman that you can be."The book is laden with personal anecdotes and some fairly solid advice on how to dress confidently, host a dinner party, and simply enjoy food, wine, and life.Recipes for some favorite French foods are included, as is a list of wardrobe staples every woman should own. My favorite parts involved her talking and engaging with friends; Ringwald comes across as very sincere and amiable.Someone you'd like to meet for coffee at a French bistro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Whimsical!
For those of us Gen X-ers, what a treat!I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - I felt like I was catching up and trading pointers with a long lost friend. This is not an autobiography at all - it is just a wonderful collection of thoughts on everything from fashion to cooking to family and much more.I was laughing so hard I was crying at moments (e.g., the explanation of "the hairs" in French). The book is beautifully illustrated with whimsical drawings on nearly every page - it made me want to see what was next...And I loved the sidebars - really cute!Highly recommend - I'm going to buy one as gift for my cousin - I know she'll appreciate it as much as me.Cheers!

3-0 out of 5 stars 40 can be fabulous
even for someone who's always 16, as she says, 40 is a relief and so is this book, which by the title, you would think is a vanity piece about what kind of mayonnaise to use on your hair, but it's really about whatever you were looking to do at 20, get back to that at 40 and you'll be fine. She also seems to have a Nora Ephronish notion of cooking, cookware, just the right accessories that takes up most of the book, that's ok, at least she knows what's she doing in the kitchen and elsewhere. Generation X and even Generation Y should be proud, there is life after high school. Interesting how she describes her time in France when she married French, spoke French and moved to France for a significant period as a phase, some phase. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dmitry Igorevich Tursunov (Russian: (·); born December 12, 1982, in Moscow, Russia) is a Russian professional male tennis player. He was 12 years old when he came to the United States to train and further his prospects of becoming a professional player. Tursunov is an offensive baseliner with excellent groundstrokes from both sides, and prefers to play on faster surfaces; he jokes about his lack of ability and success on clay courts. He is sponsored by Fila and Wilson. Tursunov helped the Russian Davis Cup team win the 2006 Davis Cup, and reach the finals of the 2007 Davis Cup. Tursunov began tennis in Moscow when his father made him play a few hours a day at 5. He came to the United States to train with Vitaly Gorin. I practiced a few hours a day. My dad realized fairly early that I had a lot of potential. A lot of people criticize him for basically choosing that career for me. He understood that I didnt have many options to make money and since he really liked tennis, he decided that I was to be a tennis player. It just happened that I was naturally good at it. He turned professional in 2000, but has suffered many major injuries in his career. The first of these was a broken leg in January of the same year, which forced him to miss four months of the season. He came back and won three ATP Futures events, and also made two finals. In 2001 Tursunov won the Futures event in Boca Raton over Jeff Morrison, then the Dallas Challenger defeating Justin Bower. After these 2 lower level tournament successes Tursunov qualified for his first ATP event in Memphis and made the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champion Mark Philippoussis. Product Description

The summer she's twelve -- the same year that Cabbage Patch dolls are popular, that Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space, that El Niño affects weather patterns worldwide and causes disasters on almost every continent of the planet Earth -- Margaret Rose Kane must confront a catastrophe brewing in her own backyard.

Freshly rescued from a miserable experience at Camp Talequa, where she was housed with seven cruel cabin mates, Margaret is looking forward to spending the rest of her summer with her beloved great-uncles, Morris and Alexander. Little does she know, the Uncles themselves are in need of a rescue.

For the last forty-five years, the Uncles have been building three giant towers in their backyard from scrap metal and shards of glass and porcelain. But now, bowing to pressures from some powerful home owners, the towers have been declared a blight on the neighborhood. Even worse, the city council has voted to have them destroyed.

Margaret Rose is outraged. She knows the towers for what they truly are: irreplaceable works of art. To Margaret, the towers sing. They sing of the joy of making something big and beautiful out of bits and pieces; of integrity; but perhaps most important of all, they sing of history. And Margaret Rose is determined to make sure they always will.

This companion story to the acclaimed Silent to the Bone is a rousing tale of art, history, and the fierce preservation of individuality, as only the incomparable E. L. Konigsburg could write it.Amazon.com Review
Twelve year old Margaret Rose Kane is incorrigible. Not only does she refuse to bend to the will of her manipulative cabin mates at Camp Talequa, she stands up to and inadvertently insults the camp director and Queen-in-residence, Mrs. Kaplan. The intimidating and cruel confrontations that threaten to break Margaret's spririt only serve to strengthen her resolve, and everyone is happy when Margaret is finally banished/rescued from Camp Talequa. Luckily for her, with her parents in Peru, this means she can spend the rest of the summer with her delightfully eccentric Hungarian great-uncles, Alexander and Morris Rose. Margaret adores her great-uncles, and loves the house at 19 Schuyler Place--especially the three peculiar clock towers (tall painted structures covered in pendants made from broken china, crystal, bottles, jars, and clock parts) that the Rose brothers have been building for as long as she can remember. For Margaret and the Rose brothers, the towers represent beauty for beauty's sake--they sparkle in the sun and sing in the wind--they exist only to spread joy. Not everyone loves the towers however, and forty-five years after the birth of the project, the city council declares the towers "unsafe," and demands that they be dismantled and destroyed. Filled with the same fiery resolve that helped her survive Camp Talequa, Margaret (with the help of a handyman named Jake, a loyal dog named Tartufo, and few other unexpected allies) launches a plan to save the towers in the name of art, history, and beauty.

A companion novel to the award-winning author's acclaimed Silent to the Bone, Outcasts is strikingly unique, incredibly interesting, and, with references to"Bartleby the Scrivener", and the rose windows of Notre Dame, exceptionally literary. In other words, The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place is vintage Konigsburg. This quirky masterpiece will be enjoyed by young fans of Konigsburg’s other erudite works, and Polly Horvath’s The Canning Season.. (Ages 10 and older) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky Characters
Margaret has always known she could do no wrong when it came to her great-uncles.Alex and Morris live in a small house in a neighborhood that used to be neighborly and then became run-down.Margaret has her own bedroom there and loves nothing better than to visit. She especially loves the backyard, divided into sections for gardening and for the towers. The towers are soaring sculptures of metal and glass which Alex and Morris have been building piece by piece for over forty years.

This summer, when Margaret's parents are in Peru, she fully expects her uncles to open their doors to her.Instead, she finds herself shipped off to camp, where her cabinmates bond together to make her life as miserable as possible.Margaret's self-determination allows her to survive their attacks until Uncle Alex comes to retrieve her.

Once back at the house, Margaret senses that something is strange between her uncles, and it doesn't take very long for her to figure out why she was sent to camp and why her uncles are particularly short-tempered.The towers are coming down.Complaints by neighbors who have bought property in the neighborhood as an investment, coupled with the city deciding the towers are unsafe, means that the life's work of Alex and Morris has been scheduled for destruction.Margaret's stubbornness serves her well as she begins a crusade to save the towers.

I really liked the quirky characters in this story; I particularly liked the way Alex and Morris related to each other, and the way they both doted on Margaret.I also liked how Margaret's camp experience was slowly explained over the course of the book.

I didn't like the role the cabinmates played at the end of the book; it seemed really unrealistic and contrived.Other than that, this was a very satisfactory book with a good ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Great, ButDefinitely Good
I think a nice list would be the best way to review a book with so many themes:
1. I LOVE E.L. Konigsburg's witty, delightfully quirky prose. She has such a way with words! The way she fleshes out her lists with details is very interesting, and although she frequently switches from present to past and back again, it's very easy to read and fluid.
2. The main character, Margaret, is in my opinion easy to like but hard to love. I really liked her self-confidence, and there were times when I identified with her. For example, the crush on Jake; we've all been there. Other times, though, I feel like she just tries too hard to be smart and sophisticated to the point where it's rather grating. I guess that makes her refreshingly realistic, though. I mean, there are enough Mary Sues in this world (Bella from Twilight, anyone?). I'm sorry. The opportunity presented itself, and I can't resist Twilight jabs. Moving on.
3. The cruelty of Margaret's peers was accurately portrayed. Girls will not just come out and say that they hate you. It's implied, underhandedly and obviously. Fact. E.L. Konigsburg understands this, unlike countless other authors.
4. The ending wasn't happy. Nor was it sad. It was REALISTIC. That's what particularly strikes me about the novel, the way it's brutally realistic. That, to me, was the most enjoyable aspect.
That's about it. The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place is a fine novel, though it's far from perfect. It wasn't Konigsburg's best work, but I'd read it again.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place
I'm not sure there was much to like about this book. The writing was dreadfully dull and overly descriptive, not at all realistic to what a 12-year-old narrator would sound like. There was nothing captivating about the plot, and most of the characters, with the possible exception of Jake, were horribly two dimensional. It's bad enough that the story was boring and unappealing, but the fact that it moved slowly with no subplots made it even worse. The characters seem cute and quirky, but turn out to be ridiculously simplistic, reminding me of Juno.It seems overall like the kind of book written to be read and analyzed endlessly and pointlessly in classrooms.I did enjoy the fact that there was a wrap-up at the end, allowing for some quick closure and letting the story come full circle, but it's a little disappointing when the only thing you like is the very end of a book.

Rating: 1.5/5

4-0 out of 5 stars Konigsburg hasn't let me down yet.
E. L. Konigsburg, The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place (Atheneum, 2004)

What do you do when you're faced with the destruction of a local landmark? What do you do if that local landmark was built by your relatives? It's an interesting question, though on the surface one has to figure it's going to be pretty narrow-market subject matter. Pretty familiar territory to me, though, as my in-laws' parents and grandparents were intimately involved with the now-dismantled Euclid Beach Park (watch for the forthcoming Arcadia Press title!), and, well, it's E. L. Konigsburg, who after From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler can do no wrong in my eyes, so away I went.

The time is the end of the eighties, the place small-town middle America. Margaret Rose Kane is going through adolescence with the help of her parents and a couple of eccentric uncles who are well-known in the community for three large works of art in their backyard, forty-foot-plus towers decorated with all sorts of shiny gewgaws. The trouble first starts when Margaret's parents are travelling in Peru for the summer, and the uncles have prior commitments, so Margaret is shipped off to a summer camp she loathes. After she and the head of the camp reach a "mutual decision" (read: she quits just before they toss her out on her ear) and she's rescued by one of her uncles, she finds out about those prior commitments--they're fighting a legal battle with their neighborhood association, who are trying to get the towers taken down for being unsafe and a blight on the community. As with all these sorts of sillinesses, there are people trying to stop it, but no one's quite sure how to go about doing so. Margaret to the rescue, and in organizing the fight to stop the towers from being torn down, she learns far more than she would have stuck in some summer camp in the woods.

Konigsburg is a gifted writer, and once this book gets going, it's fabulous. The book's problem, unfortunately, is that it does take quite a while to get going. Still, I'd advise that if you're thirty or forty pages into the book and wondering if it's ever going to go anywhere, press on; you've got some more crust to chew through, but the meat inside is well worth savoring. And the resolution of the book is truly wonderful, bringing everything full circle in the best of ways. This is fun stuff, and I definitely recommend it both for the teens who are its target audience and us old fogies who were raised in Frankweiler. ****

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down for Outcasts
Perhaps I an too old to get it, but I bought this book as a read for my students before putting it in the class library. This book is so boring that school has long since been over here in Florida and seconds from beginning and I have not completed this story.I would not recommend this particular story. But, if you are a fan, then go for it.Just not my cup of tea... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Different Ending From The Movie.
WARNING: My REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS: Pretty in Pink is a good movie and I also read this movie tie-in book which was based on the original movie screenplay but the book was written using the screenplay as a basis before final changes were made to the actual movie so at the end of the book at the prom Andie winds up not choosing the guy who she chose in the movie but another guy. So who does she wind up hooking up with at the end of the book? Read it and find out. But Most Pretty in Pink fans know that answer anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
I loved this book, like the title says.I am very disappointed that the publisher stopped printing it because everyone should read it.The book basically follows the same way that the classic movie does. All thecharacters and everything that happens is basically the same, i don'treally want to give anything away so--read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is very interesting to mw because the girl is very different. She does not seem to care what people think of her.I liked the fact that she met Blane but I don't like how his friends pressured him.If they were his friends they did not have to accept his girlfriend becaue she was nottheir girlfriend. ...
