Editorial Review

Product Description
There is a dreamlike quality to many of the stories in this new collection from Wayne Curtis. In Wild Apples, he returns to familiar themes of love and longing, and the push-pull emotions which inevitably accompany any attempt to break free of the ties that bind. Simple pleasures abound in these evocative stories, be it fishing on the river, gathering beans for an evening supper (are they beans or has-beens?), or listening to the jukebox at the local diner. Curtis mines the shaft of everyday experiences, turning each one into a meditation on human nature. In the title story, an afternoon drive yields fertile ground as a father and son stop to shake down a gnarled crab apple tree for the sweet-sour orbs of autumn. With a seemingly effortless style, he casts his line into the river of the past, reeling in tales of youthful folly, the Christmastime birth of a little sister, and life on the Miramichi River, which could be any river, anywhere. In one of the book's poignant moments, his beloved mother Brycie describes her early life in her own words. The hardship she endured is underscored by her straightforward style. Curtis also shares his insight into well-known friends, including novelist David Adams Richards and Yvon Durelle, the Fighting Fisherman. His contemplation of the life and work of Robert Frost casts a fresh light on the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet. Wayne Curtis displays a unique sensibility; a talent for transforming the familiar into the unfamiliar, for making the old new again in this poetic blend of fiction and biography. ... Read more

Product Description
A journey down the Mississippi River is a voyage through one of the largest countries in the world, the United States of America. For centuries, the Mississippi has been used for trade, communication and warfare. It is still one of the busiest cargo routes in America. It has inspired poets, writers and singers, and its beauty attracts many tourists. We travel the entire 3780 kilometres, from the glacial lakes in the north to the vast delta in the south. The river is divided into five sections and each section begins with a map showing the area that will be covered. Map references are highlighted within the text to show the reader where they are on their journey. The text has been written in themes - economic, social, nature, people and history - to enable the reader to study particular aspects of the river along its course. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lynn Barry's Impression of "These Are the Ties that Bind"
"These Are the Ties that Bind" is about an underdog with ambition who works hard to overcome the odds people seem to have...they bet against her making something of herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rivers, you Rock...Awesome Book!!!
Rivers seems to be a writer of truth...she is a painter of real life experiences in this epic story of Courtney Braxon. This story has some drama...and some suspense...with a pinch of sarcastic humor...and finally, no romance!!! Most of the chick stories, and real life experiences of books written for women and about women does not have to always be about romance. I can say that this book is 101 College Expectations for Women...lol.The book goes through the do's and don'ts about what to expect from college life. The book is soo short...but, sooo entertaining! Buy this book...you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deb Jones, Roundtable Reviews
Author Curtis Rivers has created an inspirational tale in her novella, "These Are the Ties that Bind."

The story is that of a thirteen-year old girl, Courtney Braxon, and her experiences growing up in a small town in Texas. Unlike some teens whose family and friends nurture and support their dreams, Courtney is like many other pubescent girls who feel ostracized and demeaned by adults and peers. But this young lady has grit and determination, successfully navigating the journey to adulthood.

While the basis and intent of the story is worth telling, the pieces and parts, the story structure could be better assembled for ease of reading and understanding.

Curtis Rivers exhibits a perceptive insight into human behavior in her writing skills in the future, she may be a force to be reckoned with.

2-0 out of 5 stars Local girl finds her way
These Are The Ties That Bind is the story of Curtis Rivers who in her short life has concentrated on writing, and who struggled and succeeded with her education.Raised in a small town in Texas, she had a mind for greater things, and her ambition and determination are made clear in her writing.Authentically portrayed, her adventures will resonate with many readers. The book is too short and one hopes for a longer story next time! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
Never before have I felt so moved by the brutal honesty of the characters and situations created by Francine Rivers. Truly this author is a woman after God's own heart. A must read for all women of all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Atonement Child
Excellent book.Francine Rivers is a Christian author who writes from a biblical perspective. This particular book is about abortion and all of reasons why it is not acceptable in God's eyes.Very quick reading. She draws you into the story quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
The subject of this book is a difficult one and Mrs. Rivers's talent of breathing real life and a realistic Christian struggles into this story is beautiful. As I was reading this book I could not help but put myself in the place of Dynah, the main character. What would I have done in her shoes?I'm sure I would have had the same doubts and question God; however, would I have made the right decision. What is the right decision is a central part of this book but not the main point. The point of this story is to trust in God even when the most unthinkable thing has happen. This is hard for every person of faith and I found this story inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
I have enjoyed many of Francine Rivers books, but was a little skeptical about this one. I was wrong. What an amazing book--I could not put it down! I was a little bogged down with the details in the beginning, but she really did a great job working everything into the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pro-life primer
One of the BEST books ever written about the abortion issue. Francine Rivers masterfully and sensitively examines the topic from just about every possible angle. Having been involved in the pro-life movement for decades, I have seen many sides of the abortion debate. I have read many books. This is the most outstanding. Buy it for teens, adults--anyone you care about. Whether staunch pro-lifers, "pro-choice," or undecided on the issue, ATONEMENT CHILD will give them plenty of food for thought. We read this novel in a book club I facilitated, and all the ladies loved it! Discussion questions at the back make it a powerful tool to assign in an ethics class or other church and educational venues. Gotta get it folks! Then try out her other powerful novels, as well. ... Product Description
In June 1854 the Grand Excursion celebrated in festive style the completion of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad to the Mississippi River. Hundreds of dignitaries including newspaper editors and other journalists, politicians, academics, writers, artists, business and industry leaders, and railroad officials were among those who traveled by rail from Chicago to Rock Island, Illinois, then by steamboat to St. Paul in Minnesota Territory. The travelers were shown a region undergoing rapid settlement by Europeans—an area of great natural beauty that offered much promise for additional development.

One hundred and fifty years later, the thirteen essays in this volume examine the activities and environments of the 1854 Grand Excursion and place them in the context of an evolving regional identity for the Upper Mississippi River Valley based on the economy, culture, geography, and history of the area.In a series of "excursions," the contributors explore the building of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, eastern newspaper accounts of the 1854 excursion, steamboating, the area’s pictorial landscape, passenger trains along the scenic river, the genesis and features of river towns, the control of the river for navigation, the development of preserves, parks, and recreation areas, the lumber industry, and commercial fishing. The book concludes by examining the resurgence of river-oriented development, as river towns are once again embracing the Mississippi.

Generously illustrated with maps, engravings, ephemera, and historic and present-day photographs, Grand Excursions on the Upper Mississippi River will be appreciated by tourists and residents of the area, river aficionados, and railroad and steamboat history buffs as well as academics interested in the history, geography, and regional development of the area. ... Product Description
Bestselling author Francine Rivers skillfully retells thebiblical love story of Gomer and Hosea as a tale set against the romantic backdrop of the California Gold Rush. The heroine, Angel, is a young woman who was sold into prostitution as a child. Michael Hosea is a godly man sent into Angel's life to draw her into the Savior's redeeming love. This remarkable novel has sold over 200,000 copies and was among the top 10 on the ECPA fiction bestseller list for four years running. Now available in a fresh, contemporary cover!Amazon.com Review
In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns tolove him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best.--Cindy Crosby ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Love Love this book!
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. Finished it in one day. I have never read a Christian fiction novel before, but I was quickly enthralled with Redeeming Love. The story keeps you hanging so that you can't stop reading. It also has a fabulous ending. I am going to research other Francine Rivers novels. She has me hooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
This is the only book I have ever read that I literally could not put down. I actually rushed home from work to read. Very powerful and inspiring.I am an adult but would recommend it for teenagers as well. It is a MUST read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another amazing novel by Francine Rivers
Lets put it this way- I read this book in two days! What an amazing novel...I just finished reading "Her Daughter's Dream" and picked up Redeeming Love, and was equally stirred. Rivers captures a wonderful (yet sad) story line, and still figures out how to make Jesus the center of the story. It is truely amazing. I was in tears- I'm not going to lie. I recommend this book, as well as Rivers' others!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
