This field-guide AND textbook, my version is from circa 1993, is in organization and presentation, the best that I have ever seen since the 1950's... begining of my geology and mineral collecting interests.

The English geoscientists are the BEST in the world in their presentation and love of what they are researching.This is a classical-type of English field guide book in modern expose', that deserves the "right" for CONTINUED publication.Its application (use) is world wide...! Amatures and Experts alike!!!

Inside Revco World
This book gives an insightful look inside of the Wax Trax scene in Chicago in the mid 80's and visit inside the world of Al Jourgensen.If your were ever curious of what it was like back in that era I would recommend this book highly before Al puts his book out ( ????? ).

Chicago Revco/MInistry History
It's quite a surprise that anyone would think to write a book about the "small" Chicago WaxTrax!/Industrial scene in the 80's, but having grown up in that craziness, I am amazed and very pleased that it's here in the form of Chris Connelly's novel. To be honest, I never knew what to think of Chris during that period. Obviously Al/Alan/Alain/Elaine/Alien (groan) and Paul were considered the backbone of Ministry and Revco, with a whole host of other personalities and bands competing in that space. Chris was the "Fini Tribe" guy and his music from that period never clicked with me. However, reading this book has helped fill in the gaps and provide more details on the madness that most of us only barely glimpsed. I now appreciate Chris and his heightened role in the scene.

Indeed, dots have been connected and explanations provided. It's cool reading about shows I attended over 20 years ago, getting the inside scoop on the sordid details of the show (they actually rehearsed for that first Revco show at the Metro?!). I also remember that bulls**t NYE performance at Medusa's with Ogre (or was it Chris) down on his knees, staring off into space and drooling while the band just crashed through a song or two. My god those guys were f'ed up....they left the stage (crawled off?) and we waited for an hour for them to come back. Angry and tired of standing in a packed room, we left, justifiably upset that our NYE was ruined by a band too high to play (we assumed the equipment story was an excuse). Now that Connelly has cleared up the back story on that show, I can look back and laugh at the absurdity of the situation. Serious, thank you for sharing that one in particular.

As far as the book itself, it's well written in a casual style that helps keep one engaged. Again, it felt almost personal for me, but that may have been due to Chris's writing style, not just my own relationship to the material. Chris does provide quite a bit about the scene in Chicago, but I was still left hungry for more details. There are times where the story is mired in negativity regarding everyone around the author and what was or was not cool, but that's how we were back then and surely how our kids will be the same at that age (though hopefully less, uh, risky). Better to see our musical "hero's" poked fun at for once, instead of us, the cattle spending the money that kept them going! Indeed, it's amazing the amount of excess these guys participated in, but I'm glad it's been documented so we can all be in awe of just how they managed to function (barely) at all.

To be honest, after reading this, I'm not interested in Jourgensen writing a book as I simply would not trust anything he put down to paper. Better if Paul Barker or Frank (TKK) Nardiello wrote about their experiences. Regardless, I'm quite happy with Connelly's effort to put that era to paper for all of us to enjoy and shake our heads in amazement. Forget the Sex Pistols, Here Were The Revolting Cocks!

Gonzo Groaning But A Great Read
A firsthand experience of a time and people who shaped a subculture. Funny, whiny, insecure and articulate. Chris Connelly is well spoken and able to clearly reconstruct his memories of decadence and creativity. I have two reactions to this book, one reaction is as an avid reader, the other is as a fan of the Jourgensen collection of sound and music.

As someone who who like to read, I found Connelly's firsthand account of the events surrounding Ministry, RevCo and other side projects fun, witty and very engaging. The story flows well although it does seems to get a little uneven in some places, where he will greatly detail the evens of a few particular days, then gloss over months of time with passing references to activity (to be fair, I suppose you can only recount repetitious drug abuse for so long before getting to the next interesting story). Chris tells his tale in a blog style of writing, which is to say conversational and informal, but it's a good thing that really personalizes the story.

As someone who is a fan of the Wax Trax! family and sound, I was very excited to read a personal behind the scenes account of what those times were like during Al Jourgensen's most productive and prolific days as a leader in the industrial music scene. While the book, from a fan perspective, is awesome, it became very tiresome early on to push through Chris's obvious resentment of the music and the people creating it. On numerous occasions Chris refers to his own jealously and insecurity, and it remains apparent in his writing that he still feels envious that he did not enjoy the success that Jourgensen did, as Chris spends a great deal of time belittling almost everyone's intelligence and integrity, Jourgensen in particular (he never misses an opportunity to exhibit his vitriol, and it gets to be childish at times). Now, I'm sure egos and bad behavior were rampant on everyone's part, but Chris works diligently to cast himself as a naive or reluctant participant of the events, while painting images of everyone else as barely competent, reckless substance abusers - which they all were, but Chris makes overt attempts at putting so much distance between himself and the rest of the folks that it starts sounding like an apology rather than an indifferent account of what occurred during the late 80's and early 90's. Maybe that was the point, but despite the annoying and overt petty jealousy and outright whining on Chris' part, it's a truly fun book that is a must own for any fan of the Wax Trax! years, or just likes to hear a good yarn about bad behavior.

Life in the wrath of Wax
An excellent first-person perspective of Chris Connelly's exploits - beginning with his introduction to Al Jourgensen and his revolving-door of musicians, collectively known as, and most notably, Ministry and The Revolting Cocks - to his eventual demise within the Chicago Waxtrax Records circle and ultimate dissolution of the great industrial rock scene of the mid '80s to the late '90s.

I had the the opportunity to meet Ministry at their peak of popularity during the Psalm 69 tour and talked with all of that particular line-up at the time, except Connelly, which lead me to believe was a jerk. This book has completely changed my opinion of him - which probably has something to do with his current by-gone status, and is clearly shown in the written tone of this self-depreciating introspection.

Nonetheless, this book is a great read for anyone who has followed and loved the Chicago industrial scene, or anyone else who loves the debauchery held within great rock stories. The book is fast and well written and ranks up there with the best of 'em in this genre.

Interesting story of Industrial's "Golden Age"
Connelly is articulate, surprisingly humble and filled with anecdotes.From that standpoint, it's an excellent book for anyone who wanted to know what was really going on in the WaxTrax scene of the late 80's and early 90's.He pulls no punches, nobody is painted as perfect, there's little hero worship, and yet all the major players are humanized to a degree that, despite many flaws, they still seem sympathetic.Al Jourgainsen particularly - he gets ridiculed for his affectations and self-involvement, lambasted for his spiralling drug problems and fondness for sycophants, and yet it still seems that Connelly regards him with a bit of genuine affection (even if they haven't spoken for years).

What's particualrly refreshing is his candor about his own problems and career trajectory.It could've easily slumped into a sex/drugs/rocknroll hardcore aggrandizement, or a paen to now-clean living, but it manages to avoid either boasting or becoming maudlin, no easy feat.Connelly tells it like it was - chasing the highs, chasing the booze, chasing the girls while fully realizing the ridiculousness of the situations, and he doesn't preach about how he's cleaned up his life.

His writing style, though could've used an editor.It reads more like a blog, complete with bursts of all-caps, the occasional dangling sentence fragment, and the sort of onomotopoeia one doesn't usually find in a memoir.Not that this is bad, mind you, but it can be a little distracting to be reading a detailed narrative of a Pigface show and have to stop and go back to parse out a sentence that didn't seem to make sense.

All told, though, it's a fun, quick read.Dodgy stylistic choices aside, it is a fascinating no-holds-barred look into a side of alternative music that most only have a passing familiarity with.If you grew up in the suburbs, you at least knew of Ministry, and probably had at least one black-clad friend who owned all their albums.Ministry, RevCo, Pigface, etc though, were enough on the fringes that they never generated the kind of press mythology that many of their alterna-rock contemporaries did, so this is a look into a story that has largely remained untold until now. ... Awesome for people that want to learn about the history of music
Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History: The Grunge and Post-Grunge Years, 1991-2005, which is sixth in the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History series is a very great book if you want to learn about how rock music of our current age came about. I liked this book because I want to learn about the history of rock music. It starts out talking about the beginning of the Grunge era and talks about genres such as Alternative Country and Punk. From these first building blocks of grunge music it tells how these forms of music changed through the years of the Grunge era and transformed into genres such as rap and metal.
One quality I really enjoyed about this book was that it devoted two chapters to rock festivals and the music technology that came about in the 90s. It tells how festivals and tours such as Warped Tour or Ozzfest came about. The Music Technology chapter talks about the record labels and the controversy of illegal downloading of music via the Internet.
I think that if you want to learn about how the music that we listen to today came about and who the first people to create it were, then I highly recommend that you read the whole Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History series.

Raw Footage
"Raw Footage"- A Book Review by John Lehman of Sex & Drugs & Rock `n' Roll

The cover promises "X-Rated Photos" and there are plenty of bare breasts and occasional limp penises, but this piece of pop history is interesting for other reasons depending upon who you, the reader are. For my generation--the first to embrace rock music--it recalls the rebellion of those days. For my parents, who shook their finger in warning at "sex, drugs and rock `n' roll," it was the unraveling of the status quo, something they had always aspired to. I remember my dad going fishing so he wouldn't have to endure Elvis's first appearance on the hallowed Ed Sullivan show. He knew I would watch it, and to his credit didn't forbid it, but for mom and dad it was against everything their values stood for. (As it turned out, Elvis wore a tux and the camera didn't show him from waist down.) If my parents were alive today and saw a book like this, they would say, "I told you so."

On the other hand, I don't think my children would see these antics as anything but scraps of past decades they had moved beyond. Would they want to see Miley Cyrus topless, The Jonas Brothers without pants? I think the questions might seem irrelevant to them. And studying many of the pictures, they could just be right. There are a few photos that transcend voyeurism: Elton John with Freddie Mercury of Queen obviously drawn to each other, a smoke-screened Bob Marley with a bong as big as a cheap cigar, David Bowie and a German transvestite, the full-frontal of Iggy Pop, Ozzie Osbourne sitting bare-ass on a toilet having a smoke plus an intriguing picture of a nude girl with this painted across her body, "LESSON 2. ESTABLISH THE NAME SEX PISTOLS." And, is that really a picture of Princess Di, lowering the top of her dress on page 65? Many of the photographs, such as naked Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, show they are more than aware of the camera, of making a statement, than of each other. On the other hand I find the most appealing pictures are of naked flower-children at the French Pop and Isle of Wright festivals in 1970. Of course they would be in their 60s today. And it's that kind of perspective that makes me wonder.

It's just as well there isn't any text. Whatever this frenetic behavior was about, words couldn't do much more than the pictures. The publisher had done a nice job of packaging the material, and the chapter headings themselves are amusing, "Sometimes Things Get a Little Out of Hand," "Meanwhile Back at the Hotel," "Backstage Passes" and "Feeling Itchy." The first edition of this book appeared in 1985. It spawned a sequel and the current edition combines both. You might take it from your coffee table if your parents or your sophisticated teens are around, but on some night it is worth turning down the lights, putting on a classic rock album, opening Sex & Drugs & Rock `n' Roll and taking a little trip. A trip back to a time when even decadence was simpler.

this is the one
The amg books are quite exceptional but this one is really something.There are a few omissions I noted (Rotary Connection and Fanny)yet the proof is in the pudding.Prove it to yourself by finding an artist with several works you have a view on and see what their writer says...often the observations are right on whether you fully agree or not.The reviews and bios are quite interesting, and it is a volume to get lost in...a real treasure.A few artists will get more attention than you might like, but it leaves all other volumes like it in the dust.

Last month, this book paid my electric bill...
I've found the "All Music Guide" to be such a useful research tool, that I start lapsing into an "info-mercial-esque" tone when I begin extolling its virtues:"Hi. A book by those that can't about those that can play music.
Primarily the reviews I have read in here are more a collection "deep thoughts" from shallow minds.Stephen Thomas Erlewine is a terrible reviewer - I have to wonder if he even listens to the music he reviews.I have to say I fundamentally disagree with him on so many levels that the web isn't a big enough venue.The reviews are inconsistent - Ratings don't match the words.This is at best a half assed work.It is more useful as a brief encylopedia of bands.But it is useless as a guide book to music that is good.I ended up just throwing it in the trash.Don't bother wasting your money.

Good, but not great
I wish the word "comprehensive" wasn't used on the cover of this book because it isn't comprehensive.Some groups, that weren't obscure in their time at least, aren't here.And many of the groups that are here don't have all their albums reviewed.They may have a review of a group's "Greatest Hits CD" and that's it.This book has 5 star reviews of music I think sounds awful and 2 star reviews of music I think sounds good, so it's all in the ear of the listener.As a guide it's good, but I'll bet you haven't heard of half the groups here, so if you buy something by one of these groups based on the review, don't be shocked if it doesn't sound as good as you were led to believe.Also, if you hear something by a group you like but aren't familiar with and want to buy some of their music you may not see it all listed here.They could at least tell you all album titles a group had.Still, it's one of the best guides I've seen, I'm not sorry I got it, and actually recommend it.

Pretty good but a waste of money.
Its well written but its a waste of money if you know about thesite verion of All Music Guide which really is one of the best sites on the internet.Not only does the site version have everything the book does and has pictures but also the lists of artists,albums,music styles and reviews are seemingly endless and gloriously delightful.

A well written book.
This was a really good book but it could have been bigger and had pictures.Onereason I took a point off was because I disagreestrongly with some of their opinions.For example,Mob Rules,Born Again,The Eternal Idol,and Never Say Die! were all great albums but these guys gave them bad ratings but I guess that's understandable because everybody has a right to their own opinion.So I say to you, buy this book because it is well written and gives important info on certain bands but remember you are not going to like everything they say.

Inconsistent, But Still Very Useful
Some of the written reviews are inconsistent with their corresponding "star ratings". For instance, some albums will get mediocre reviews, but receive 5 out of 5 stars. Others will receive glowing reviews,& only get 3 or 4 stars. And you may not agree with the authors'assessments. However, enough info is usually given to allow you to decidefor yourself. ... Only for amatuer geologists
As a graduate student in geology I collected reference books to help me better identify rocks and minerals. If that's what you're looking for I wouldn't really recommend this book. It has pretty cool pictures of rocks and minerals but I think it lacks in more detailed description, most of the minerals don't even look close to what most hand sample really look like. The pictures look like they were taken from a mineral museum. The rocks can be broken down further in my opinion, like most books, such as what makes a schist a schist, and the various forms of the particular rocks. More detail could be done on the minerals, more on their detail. The book just has the general rocks, such as diorite, gabbro, limestone, etc. It doesn't have some of the more harder to identify rocks like phyllite, eclogite, anorthosite, etc. It does however have a short description of each mineral's economic use which you don't see in most reference books. For an amatuer geologist, or someone who is just facinated with rocks, this would be a great book to buy. But for those in the field or studying the subject, this book won't help you much. If you don't believe me, take petrology and then try and use this book.

A Beautiful Book
This is a wonderful "coffee table" book; provides a colorful and easy-readable introduction to the identification and study of rocks, minerals, and gemstones.Stones are featured in alphabetical order and each gets a full page.Photographs of each in its raw (not cut) state are large, sharp, and well reproduced.Text describes the composition, uses, and source locales of each subject.An excellent guide for the new or "just mildly interested" student or casual reader.This is not a deep scientific tome for the advanced geologist or minerologist.It's a great for a quick reference, or just for an entertaining browse in an idle moment.

Great info but!!

Another wonderful Eyewitness Book
The whole DK Eyewitness Books series represents a treasure for young readers. Whatever the subject, one gets a little background and context as well as subject-by-subject discussion, providing considerable depth of information for the younger reader.

The book begins with an introduction noting the age and nature of the planet Earth.Also in the brief opening section is a rendering of different types of rocks and minerals, such as gemstones, sedimentary rocks, seashore pebbles, and igneous rocks.This would be helpful for young readers to provide some basic vocabulary. There follow discussions of rock formations and weathering and erosion.

Then, a variety of rocks and minerals are explored. Later, the use of rocks and minerals is considered.

As always, a nice resource for young readers.

i love chris isaak's music which is why i bought this book, but it appears to have a few errors.after his concert, i asked him where the capo is for two hearts, and apparently it's on the third fret instead of the first which is where this book claims it is.i also noticed in his baja sessions video that for pretty girls don't cry he doesn't seem to use a capo, but the book gives chords for when a capo is on the first fret.since i am learning how to play guitar, i would prefer to learn how to play these songs the way he plays them so that i can get the correct sound.

Yeah, no tablature
I was happy to have the written music, but like Brett, I don't read music very well and play much better from tab.Big disappointment.But nonetheless, you have the chords used, and you can piece it together well enough.

Nice but basic
As guitar music books go, its pretty standard fare. All the songs from the album are there in all their 'lying in the hammock drinking Coronas and playing guitar' glory, so thats good. The biggest problem I have with thebook is that there is no guitar tab: only the basic melody music and thechords. If you want to fully recreate that 'Chris Isaak and theSilvertones' sound, complete with lead guitar riffs, you are on your own. ... Read more

There's Something for Everyone!
As a lifelong music fanatic who thrives on rock/pop minutiae, this book is like candy for my senses. While I may be familiar with many of these landmarks, it's great to have them all bound in one encyclopedic volume. I'm also a person who's been known to trek far & wide just to stand in the spot where a musical hero of mine once did, so this will come in handy for those times I feel I'm jonesing for a trek to a musical Mecca. But whether you're a completist or a casual fan, there's something in here for everyone. Great photos help round out this joyful celebration of these notable locales which help to make our American culture so vibrant & distinctive.

Useful for dipping in and out of. Probably need to have the other books in the series.

I saw the Author featured on Real Orange (OC local show)..
It was pretty cool seeing the local sites and history. I am sure the book won't let me down - if it is 1/1000th as good as the story on TV, I'll be happy.

A fun book.
Lots of great stories about the places that were made famous by the big names in rock and roll.
I was a concert promoter for many years and was able to relate to a lot of the events and places.One theatre that was left out of the book (The Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ) I co-found.I emailed the author of this book.He called me within a few hours from California.He said he was very sorry for the oversight and would put the Capitol Theatre in the next addition of the book.

Aother GREAT book by this author
Chris Epting has once again made a book about all the places behind the history. As with his three other book I've purchased ("James Dean, "M. Monroe" & "Elvis Presley") it's a collection of cool facts about the historical value of the PLACE, in addition to the event. If you are a person that looks at a physical location (like a liquor store on the corner of 7th & Main in L.A.) and says "Wow! That is where U2 made that iconic video 20 years ago), then all of Chris' books are for you. There is just something about staring at an otherwise boring street corner in San Franciso and realising that you're gazing at one of the most famous album covers of the past 50 years. Fascinating book...
I can't really add anything to the description of the basic story...others have done that well. What I can add is that the writing style is so comfortable, so familiar...it's almost as if you're having a conversation with someone rather than reading words on a page. I think that's what makes it such a quick, easy read. Anyone with an interest in rock music history from the late sixties through seventies would appreciate this book. These are stories you have probably not heard before.

Forest Gump, Indeed!
Do the people who wrote the reviews before me REALLY believe this crap? If this is not entirely made up, it is CERTAINLY embellished to no end! I started out enjoying it until about the umpteenth time of Forest, eh, Chris being in the place where all the action is AGAIN!
Yeah, she was there for every important album and tour of the late 1960's and through the 1970's. Sure. She constantly had people calling her up out of the blue to offer her a job with every act in the R&R Hall Of Fame, even when she had moved and didn't even have the same phone number. Sure.
You get the idea. Read the thing if you like Rock and Roll. And Fiction.

This book allows you to go on a trip through a cool time in music.She tells a good tale without selling anyone down the river yet still telling us some great stories about herself and the persons she knew.I found her journey fascinating.If you are a Beatles' fan I think you will get to know the members just a little bit better than you did before.There are not shocking revelations but just stories to add to, and confirm, your knowledge of the group.I like the book.I'm glad she told her story.

An excellent memoir
I really enjoyed MISS O'DELL. It's a truly enjoyable book about a woman plucked out of virtual obscurity to become a part of the inner circle of many top Rocks of the 1960s and 70s. It's a compellingly written account of a very unlikely life. As someone from so-called Generation X (typically defined as the generation born during the 1970s), this book is something of a history lesson for me. I know the Stones, the Beatles, Queen, etc., are "rock gods," but I don't know much about them. So, it was great to learn about them, and to learn about them from a behind-the-scenes perspective. I just really enjoyed this book. Even if you aren't a fan of the various rock groups the author worked with, you will still enjoy this highly readable book.

A Great Trip Back In Time
Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be a fly on the wall as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo went through their creative process? How about being a fly on the wall when the love triangles involving George, Ringo, and Ringo's wife when George tells Ringo "I'm in love with you wife?" Well Chris O'Dell was a fly on the wall during these very tumultuous times. She lived in the mansion with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd and saw that marriage fall as Eric Clapton openly went after and won Pattie's love. What is it about Pattie that inspired George to write "Something" and Eric to write "Layla", "Wonderful Tonight", and "Have You Ever Loved A Woman". This is the closest I've come to understanding more about Pattie than her obvious beauty as she and Chris were (and remain) very close friends.

Chris worked at Apple records at the height of it's place as an important center of the music world then, when Apple was collapsing, used her organizational skills to become a tour manager. This put her in close contact with The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell and many more. She gives an accurate depiction of life in the music world, onstage and off at a time when substance abuse was at its heigth.
