Media Control is a bad thing!
This book summarizes the history and current status of media in Central America and Panama, describes how economic and political realities in developing countries tend to concentrate media power in the hands of a few, and explains why this is a bad thing.The authors contend that 1) economic development depends in large part on the stability that comes from broad-based and informed democratic participation of a country's populace, 2) media control can limit the development of democratic institutions and further oligarchic systems, and 3) increased support for free and open media in the developing world is necessary to sustain economic development and democracy strategies.The book closes by citing the growing importance of wireless internet as one of the ways to break monopolistic media systems.This is an important book that explains why expanded internet access is not just a luxury for the developing world; social and economic stability may depend on the ability of common citizens to communicate in systems that parallel but are not controlled by the established media powers. ... Fantastic Story!
In my opinion,the most splendid part of the story is the description of the room. It is so detailed that as if it were at my sight. The ending is unexpectedly and satirically. When it comes to the audiotape, the voice ofthe housekeeper is furry, her British tone was very suitable for thecharacter. I appreciate the classic very much!

It's a good story, a good love story!
I have one chance to listen to a part of this story,"The Furnished Room",in my class.Telling the truth,I feel that it is not easy to read because of some recondite words. However, on the other side, with thedetailed description and the radio reading, it makes me go through thesituation personally. Esepecially the surprised ending, it also touched memuch and I shut myself in a world of fancy for a long time. I think thatit's a good story, a good love story. As a whole, I like the story verymuch!

I took these classes right around the end of 2002 / 2003, and I remember reading this book, I probably still have it.Good classes, good instructors, and the info is valuable. A lot has still changed in the last 7 years, so go get some updates even after this book.
