The easy to read and inspiring story of Dr. Ross, one of Canada's pioneer female doctors. She gave up a comfortable life in Montreal to treat illness and injury in frontier Manitoba.A wonderful book that is a testament to one woman's determination to practice medicine; she had to overcome predjudice against female doctors, and the dangers of frontier life. This book makes settlement of the Canadian West come alive, and will show junior high school girls, and anyone interested in ourpioneer heritage, how Canada was built by the determination and faith of people like Dr. Ross ... Product Description

This innovative reading of Primo Levi’s work offers the first sustained analysis in English of his representations of bodies and embodiment. Discussion spans the range of Levi’s works — from testimony to journalism, from essays to science fiction stories — identifying and tracing multiple narratives of embodiment and disembodiment across his oeuvre. These narratives range from the abject, disembodied condition of prisoners in Auschwitz, to posthuman or cyborg individuals, whose bodies merge with technological devices. Levi’s representations of bodies are explored in relation to theories of embodiment and posthumanism, bringing his work into new dialogue with critical discourses on these issues. Taking inspiration from Levi’s definition of the human being as a constructor of containers, as well as from the recurring references to both material and metaphorical containing structures in his work, the book suggests that for Levi, embodiment involves constant negotiations of containment. He depicts the complex relationships between physical and social bodies, the material and the immaterial self, the conscious and unconscious subject, the organic and the technologically-enhanced body, engaging with evolving understandings of the boundaries of the body, the self, and the human.

Product Description
This text covers the range of British scholarship on the prolific literary and theoretical work of Umberto Eco. With essays by scholars such as Michael Caesar and David Robey, the volume provides an overview of current research being carried out by a new generation of academics. In addition, it provides an opportunity to view the interaction between Eco's fiction and his theoretical texts and suggests future avenues of research. The interdisciplinary nature of the contributions makes this collection accessible to Italianists and non-Italian speakers alike in order to situate Eco's work in the wider literary and critical sphere. Contributions have been divided into four sections, with the first containing essays that engage with Eco's writing through a strong awareness of the reading strategies suggested and required by his texts. The second section is composed of essays that discuss different approaches to interpretative strategies, including the relationship between Eco's theoretical writing and his own fiction. The third part consists of new responses to Eco's work, each of which questions previous theoretical interpretations and creates new applications for established approaches. Finally, the fourth section contains a written response from Eco himself to some of the questions raised by these essays, and a translation of the final chapter from his most recent publication, "Sulla letteratura", which discusses the development of his narrative works from conception to execution. ... Product Description
Focussing on his term as Prime Minister from 2001-06, this scholarly volume provides the first assessment of how the neo-conservative values attributed to Berlusconi were contested and resisted by a variety of groups. The continuing influence of the controversial figure of Silvio Berlusconi on contemporary Italian life, culture and politics is beyond question. Focussing on his term as Prime Minister, this volume assesses how the neo-conservative values attributed to Berlusconi were contested and resisted by social/minority movements, intellectuals (radical and moderate) and media practitioners. Edited by members of the Centre for European Languages and Cultures at the University of Birmingham, and bringing together academics in Britain, Ireland, the US and Italy, it has an international perspective. Analysis investigates how resistance to the new conservative culture has been articulated, and how this has been expressed and explained by those involved. This interdisciplinary volume is divided into three (overlapping) areas: contemporary Italian politics (including the evolution of left and right, unions vs government; the G8 in Genoa and the anti-war movement); cultural texts (including films and documentaries, television programmes, novels and theatre; and experiences (the voices and practices of those who have opposed neo-conservative values from within the cultural industries and identity movements). Wide-ranging, innovative and challenging, this volume should appeal to all those who have an interest in Italy, in politics, in culture and cultural studies. ... Read more

A fascinating look at the life and work of one of our most enduring authors. For over 150 years readers have fallen under the spell of Jane Eyre, as they've read the story of the plain but spirited governess and her relationship with the handsome, brooding Mr. Rochester.Charlotte Bronte's own life was no less interesting than her heroine's, and Stewart Ross traces Charlotte's remarkable story from a Dickensian boarding school and the death of her beloved older sisters, through the games of imagination played on the moors with her siblings Anne, Emily and Branwell, to her lonely years as a governess and ultimate success and fame.As Charlotte's compelling story unfolds, we see the reflections of her life in excerpts from her greatest work, Jane Eyre. This remarkable book offers a glimpse of the process that transforms life into literature and serves as an enticing introduction to one of the greatest novels in the English language. ... Read more

Carli Gemz is going undercover. She's off to the Winchester School of the Arts to get into character for her upcoming TV series, Private Nights. She will have the son of the creator, Fellini Udall Newport (aka FUN) at her disposal as her personal assistant.

Fun has no desire to be the slave to Carli, whom he has to refer to as Sheila Smith, her character's name.Being her assistant is part of the arrangement his father has made with Headmaster Stanton to keep Fun at Winchester.Fun should've been kicked out for his graffiti art around campus.Instead, his girlfriend, Charity, was expelled for getting caught in the male dorm. Life is not fair.

Senior year starts out with the news that Darcy Novak, the basic do-gooder of the senior class, has gone missing.Fun's roommate, Nails, used to date Darcy and may be a suspect in her disappearance. Also in question is Darcy's most recent boyfriend, Kirk Bishop.Kirk's family has donated enormous amounts of money to Winchester, and he is able to get away with just about anything.

When Fun and Carli meet, they actually form a bond and the two decide to investigate Darcy's disappearance, each for their own reasons. As they stumble through the first part of the school year, the mystery around Darcy grows.More of their acquaintances come under suspect, and the two no longer know who they can trust.

Told in alternating voices, Fun and Carli reveal their thoughts to the reader as they try to figure out what happened to Darcy. They both have their own issues to work through, but they come to rely on each other as they days pass and the mystery is no closer to being solved.

DIRTY LAUNDRY bounces back and forth between the two characters. At times it was hard to keep track of who was doing the talking, but overall, the story was intriguing.Mr. Ehrenhaft was able to keep the intrigue surrounding Darcy's disappearance cleverly hidden up until the final few pages.

Fun and Carli were both creative characters with quirky personalities, but it would be nice to see their characters develop even more in a follow-up story.

Rating: 3 Enchantments

Carli Gemz (pronounced `Games') is about to go undercover at Winchester boarding school to research her upcoming role. Only two people at the school know her true identity, the headmaster Stanton and FUN, the son of the man in charge of her next project. But Winchester is far from what the glossy pages of the brochure promise, instead Winchester is better known as DIRTY LAUNDRY, the place where the best boarding schools send their trouble students. Soon Carli finds herself investigating the disappearance of the popular Darcy Novak, a fellow student at Winchester who vanished the night before Carli's arrival.

FUN, (real name Fellini Udall Newport) is back at Winchester because of his father promising he'd be Carli's personal assistant. Just what he wants to do. Not. But at least he's back with his best friend Nails, who seems to be hiding something. Did he have something to do with Darcy's disappearance? Together with Carli, he's going to find out.

I have to say DIRTY LAUNDRY was a bit of an odd read. Divided into three parts, which each part having a bit of an index that told you the scene order, it took me awhile to get into the story and relate to the characters. Honestly I didn't felt like I really knew the two main characters, Carli and FUN until the third part began. Carli is truly one of the more unique YA characters I've read. What other teenage actress has a homeless guy as a PA back in Los Angeles? Along with her shame spirals, in which she makes herself go out and do something nice for someone else. The one funny part is when she emails her shrink Dr. Fien back in Los Angeles, and gets one back where Dr. Fien tries to make her angry and get out and do something different. Like have some FUN. I did like some of the secondary characters in Miranda, Carli's new roommate and the intriguing Nails.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and smart
Winchester School of the Arts is the Laundromat of East Coast boarding schools. When teens have dropped out--or have been kicked out--of every other reputable prep school, Winchester is where they go. It's also where unsuspecting Carli Gemz, a young actress, is sent by the producer of her new TV show to get some real life experience with boarding school living. What she doesn't know is that she's also being sent there to give the producer's son, Fun, one last chance at redemption before he gets himself kicked out. Both are surprised to find that the school's golden girl, and possibly the most normal person there, Darcy, has gone missing. Carli is intrigued and can't fight the urge to look for her, and Fun is dragged along, making for a humorous and puzzling adventure.

Dirty Laundry is a nicely engaging combination of wit, mystery, and a dash of romance written in the form of alternating narratives between Fun and Carli's unique voices, which can be a difficult feat, but one that Ehrenhaft pulls off flawlessly. The characters are presented in such a way that everything Ehrenhaft discloses about them--from multiple points of view, their own dialogue, and their actions--only reinforces the genuine vibe Dirty Laundry gives off. The diverse and realistic characters are the key element that grounds the rather far-fetched plot from seeming too cheesy and unrealistic and adds to the quirkiness and overall charm of the entire novel. The seriousness of the missing girl and the possibility that her abductor lives among the teens is carefully balanced by the underlying wit and humor that is present throughout the entire novel. The only deterring aspect of the book was the slightly rushed conclusion, but overall Dirty Laundry is a hilarious and entertaining read reminiscent of the works of John Green and Jaclyn Moriarty's The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie, and is easy for the reluctant teen reader to get immersed into. Ehrenhaft has created a winner.

Product Description
Since Peter Senge published his groundbreaking book The Fifth Discipline, he and his associates have frequently been asked by the business community: "How do we go beyond the first steps of corporate change? How do we sustain momentum?" They know that companies and organizations cannot thrive today without learning to adapt their attitudes and practices. But companies that establish change initiatives discover, after initial success, that even the most promising efforts to transform or revitalize organizations--despite interest, resources, and compelling business results--can fail to sustain themselves over time. That's because organizations have complex, well-developed immune systems, aimed at preserving the status quo.

Now, drawing upon new theories about leadership and the long-term success of change initiatives, and based upon twenty-five years
of experience building learning organizations, the authors of The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook show how to accelerate success and avoid the obstacles that can stall momentum. The Dance of Change, written for managers and executives at every level of an organization, reveals how business leaders can work together to anticipate the challenges that profound change will ultimately force the organization to face. Then, in a down-to-earth and compellingly clear format, readers will learn how to build the personal and organizational capabilities needed to meet those challenges.

These challenges are not imposed from the outside; they are the product of assumptions and practices that people take for granted--an inherent, natural part of the processes of change. And they can stop innovation cold, unless managers at all levels learn to anticipate them and recognize the hidden rewards in each challenge, and the potential to spur further growth. Within the frequently encountered challenge of "Not Enough Time," for example--the lack of control over time available for innovation and learning initiatives--lies a valuable opportunity to reframe the way people organize their workplaces.

This book identifies universal challenges that organizations ultimately find themselves confronting, including the challenge of "Fear and Anxiety"; the need to diffuse learning across organizational boundaries; the ways in which assumptions built in to corporate measurement systems can handcuff learning initiatives; and the almost unavoidable misunderstandings between "true believers" and nonbelievers in a company.

Filled with individual and team exercises, in-depth accounts of sustaining learning initiatives by managers and leaders in the field, and well-tested practical advice, The Dance of Change provides an insider's perspective on implementing learning and change initiatives at such corporations as British Petroleum, Chrysler, Dupont, Ford, General Electric, Harley-Davidson, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi Electric, Royal Dutch/Shell, Shell Oil Company, Toyota, the United States Army, and Xerox. It offers crucial advice for line-level managers, executive leaders, internal networkers, educators, and others who are struggling to put change initiatives into practice.Amazon.com Review
Since its release in 1990, Peter M. Senge's bestselling The Fifth Disciplinehas converted readers to its innovative business principles of the"learning organization," personal mastery, and systemsthinking. Published nearly a decade later, Dance of Changeprovides a formidable response to businesspeople wondering how to makehis programs stick. He outlines potential obstacles (such asinitiating transformation, personal fear and anxiety, and measuringthe unmeasurable) and proposes ways to turn these obstacles intosources of improvement. Senge--with considerable help from the teamwho worked on the follow-up development manual, The Fifth DisciplineFieldbook--presents an insider's account of long-termmaintenance efforts at General Electric, Harley-Davidson, theU.S. Army, and others who are learning organization, along withexperience-based suggestions and exercises for individuals andteams. "We are seeking to understand how people nurture thereinforcing growth processes that naturally enable an organization toevolve and change," Senge explains, "and how they tend to the limitingprocesses that can impede or stop that growth." --HowardRothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive examples, tips and techniques to bring positive change in an organization
I recommend this book for those who are actively managing change in an organization.I did not read this book cover to cover as it is a huge book. The chapter I liked most was "Walking the Talk".The personal checklist of questions (given below) to get "centered" will be helpful to me.
1. Do I have "Constancy of Purpose"
2.Am I patient enough?
3.Am I too patient?
4.Can I muster the necessary courage?
5.Can I keep an optimistic bias?
6.Am I Oppurtunistic?
7.Am I approaching people with compassion?
8.Do I conduct my work with love?

Detailed explanation for each of these questions is given on page # 211 and 212.

What can I say? I have always been pleased from my purchases through Amazon. That is the reason I always come back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective Change Management
In "Dance of Change", Peter Senge and his co-authors argue that the key to achieving and sustaining significant change lies in changing people's basic ways of thinking. This is a big challenge as organisations have to grapple with some deep seated ways of thinking. Peter Senge did an excellent job of confronting this challenge and suggesting some practical and useful ideas to achieve change in people's mindset and organisational practices. The book explains the processes that help to reinforce change and minimise resistance to change. This fascinating book explains and provides advice on how to initiate, sustain, and redesign and shape new ways of thinking.

The book methodically, step-by-step discuss the ten key challenges to profound change. The authors buttressed their arguments and conclusions with some notes on successful organizational change initiatives highlighting the specific approaches taken by the likes of British Petroleum, Ford, GE, Hewlett-Packard, and Dupont. The book also includes round-table discussions, team exercises, case histories, checklists, and helpful guidance.

Peter Senge is the renowned author of "The Fifth Discipline" which had a profound impact on the notion of organizational learning. The "Fifth Discipline" is still is a must read for receptive and motivated readers, especially those working on organizational change, training and human resource development in all industries.

In fact, "Dance of Change" starts with an insightful review of the "five disciplines" of learning from "The Fifth Discipline" namely personal mastery, mental models, shared visions, team learning, and systems thinking. Hence this book makes an excellent resource to the Fifth Discipline, although it is so well written and presented that it can stand on its own feet as a handy and useful handbook or reference material for effective change management.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Little Exhausted
.

When 'The Dance of Change' was published in '99, Senge's work was already reaching the end of it's relevancy.A brilliant thinker, he's had difficulty sustaining creative thinking since 'The Fifth Discipline'. Not surprising. With such a brilliant, breakthrough book like his 1990 masterpiece, one tends to get trapped by one's own fame. Thus is born The Fifth Discipline Industry.

The Dance of Change contained nothing new in 1999.By 2006 the ideas contained in 'Dance' are so passe for most industry. Many others have built upon Senge's work in far more effective ways and your time is better spent with them. While you can skip 'Dance', 'The Fifth Discipline' still is a must read, especially if you're working on organizational change in education or human services, two industries that remain stubbornly stuck in the 80's.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Tool Ever
I'm part of several organizations. They're are often serious conflicts that occur. Most of these events are vaguely dealt with by the chairman. A book like this,I've found to be quite essential. The general desparities being observed, are supported in the book. There're so many examples for peaceful resolution. I believe anyone working with the public;or an organization should read this book.
