5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Gonna Work!!
I'm hitting 55 really soon, and maybe I just needed a pick-me-up!!!
Some common sense from the Ultimate Drag Queen, was just the thing!
Funny, touching, and down to earth with a little nonsense to make
you wrinkle your nose! Great Fluff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ru rocks.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that America's favorite drag queen's "Guide to Life" wasn't just some silly picture book with well-placed quips and recollections, it's actually a well-written entertaining read with just a dash of contemporary self-help thrown in.

Of course it's full of tips and tricks for making your cheekbones stand out, keeping your wig on whatever the weather, and how to ensure they never see you sweat, but it's much more than that. Mixed in with tips on makeup, hair and posture are some great tips for life. What sets her guide apart from most, however, is that Ru never preaches and never sounds like Our Miss Brooks; she's down to earth and practical- albeit fabulous as well.

Workin' It: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Style has something to offer everyone; straight, gay, man, woman, purple, or silver.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love RuPaul in every way but this book was the worst I've ever read
Ru Paul is amazing with his smarts, his beyond perfect drag look and his ability to build his brand. I also enjoyed meeting him one Wed night at the skating rink. He was so unassuming and quite the good skater, just skating to the music all by himself. He was more interested in what I was about rather than talking about himself. A true classy guy.

Sadly, the decision to purchase this book was the worst decision by far.I enjoyed his auto biography but it was so long ago and outdated for me to renew my interest in that book...so I bought this one just to experience his vision, talent and advice.

Wow, this book was absolutely awful. The style, vision, etiquette, opinions on fashion down to what to pack for travel was beyond boring, very similar to everyone else in the country and truly truly unimaginative.I feel the writing of this book was beyond pointless, a lazy attempt and absolutely no surprises, nothing humorous whatsoever....a big SO WHAT....this was the worst book I've read to date, isn't that sad given he is so awesome?

HORRIBLE!!!!

Witty Advice

Amos Lassen

I have to hand it to RuPaul; he is a success story for sure and he seems to be the definition of style even though many of us never thought that a drag queen would ever reach that honored and lofty position. He is the undisputed queen of style and now he shows us how we can be fit to curtsy before him.
This is not just a style guide, it a GPS through life and RuPaul is the monitor. He gives us helpful hints on beauty and fashion, confidence and style. We see that success is all about inner beauty and although clothes are great they are not what truly makes the man. He gives us life lessons and positive advice along with many, many photos. He looks at style from the inside out and shows us how to learn to look within in order to make greater what is seen on the surface.
The book is a short yet down-to-earth way to look at ourselves and to better understand who we are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
to all who were expecting something one-dimensional, this book starts from the core and expands, always with humor, from the matters that concern us all the most deeply to the most trivial of issues - this is a manual for life and drag, and very very well-expressed.Not to mention useful.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Look at you looking at Ru-Ru
I have always liked RuPaul and recently becoming obsessed with RuPaul's Drag Race TV show made me really want to know more about Ru. Being a straight married woman, I found Ru's story not only interesting, but inspiring, and frankly laugh out loud funny at times. To me she has quickly become a role model for me and can be for anyone male/female, straight or of the GLBT community. She is true to herself and just a beautiful person inside and out. An excellent read for anyone who is curious to know more about the fabulously glamorous RuPaul. EVERYBODY SAY LOVE!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a good book, I like autobiographies, especially when the whole truth is told.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU BETTER WORK!!!
"Lettin It All Hang Out" is a lot like RuPaul; both are fascinating, colorful and incredibly lively! In her first book, Ru talks about how she became the world's most famous drag-queen. She is like Dolly or Charo. How can anyone not adore Ru?

I've always loved RuPaul because she is not like a typical drag-queen. Anyone that's ever known a drag-queen (especially in NY) knows how temperamental and nasty they are prone to be. But, Ru is so kind-hearted and loveable. She once described herself as a "Disney character." And, I think that really is the best way to explain her because everyone loves her.

RuPaul honestly details her rise to fame and stardom; living in NY's seedy East Village during the 70's and 80's. She also candidly writes about her tumultuous relationship with her family from the south and how she had to be who she had to be.

The book includes lots of extra tidbits and odds and ends; perhaps, even some info that I would rather not know (there is a chapter about "tucking!") And, Ru includes lots and lots of pictures of herself during the years. As a man, or as a woman, Ru is beautiful on the inside and out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Starrbooty lives on!!!
Ru is truly an special woman, who is proud of her Drag Queen Whore Glam self!! Ru said in this book to hold on to your dream, so I will. I will pursue getting into the music industry. I don't know how I will but everyone starts from the bottom!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
You won't be disappointed in this book. RuPaul really knows how to tell a real story.Very inspiration and inspiring. A must read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SEVERAL VARIATIONS OF SEX AND GENDER

(ISBN: 0807079405; hardback)
(Library of Congress call number: HQ77.9.F45 1996)

Transgender Warriors:
Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman

(Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 1997) 218 pages
(ISBN: 0807079413; paperback)
(Library of Congress call number: HQ77.9.F44 1996)

This book embraces several variations of sex and gender:
(in order of importance) transsexuals; homosexuals; cross-dressers;
intersexuals; people with unusual gender-personalities;
and people who transcend conventional sex-roles.
All of these are called "transgender" persons.
But this term is mainly useful for the political project
of winning civil rights for persons with such variations.
Scientifically, the term "transgender" is far too broad and vague
because it lumps all variations of sex and gender together,
without regard to the causes or reasons behind each variation.
(This book casts no light on such possible causes or reasons.)

The fundamental purposes of this collection
of pictures, stories, and myths of 'transgender' people
is to build a positive image (and self-image)
of all variations of sex and gender.
The author has combed history and pre-history,
looking for positive stories about people (and gods)
with some variation from standard sex and gender:
myths from the major cultures of the world;
indigenous peoples of the New World;
Roman Catholic saints; modern history.
Feinberg also explores tolerance and intolerance
of such variations around the world.

Leslie Feinberg might like to be referred to as "he"
in any review of this book,
but the present reviewer, knowing her only thru the printed word,
feels that she is more a strong woman in personality than a man.
The author was born female but now lives as a man.
(For more details, read the book.)
The facts of her own life do not distort what she reports
--except in her selection of only positive role-models--
but her interest in the subject was doubtless personal in the beginning.

Transgender Warriors is not an objective history
of people with variations of sex and gender.
Only positive examples and stories are included.
All the 'transgendered' people who suffered internally
or even killed themselves are omitted.
The only suffering acknowledged here is caused by other people
and authorities, who oppressed everyone
who did not fit the standard patterns of sex and gender.
But the purpose of the book is to present positive role-models,
not to present all sides of 'transgenderism'.
The author wants to make the world safer
for all variations of sex and gender.
People should not have to classify themselves by sex or gender.
And they should not have to follow life-paths
dictated by such classifications.
Feinberg seems to believe that sex and gender are free choices.
And we should all have the civil right to live any way we please.

Transgender Warriors is richly illustrated
with pictures on almost every page.
And the last section is over 30 pages of pictures and stories
of contemporary 'transgender' people.

For years to come, this book will be a rich source
of stories and descriptions of variations of sex and gender.
Next, we need some careful, scientific analysis
of all phenomena related to sex and gender--and their variations.

5-0 out of 5 stars great service
came as scheduled and in great shape as described - would do business againg with this seller.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Layperson's View of History
History is not only for historians but if one is not a historian one's understanding of events and individuals within their context will be limited.Even then, few historians are capable of mastering the entirety of human history. It is clear that Feinberg has done a lot of reading but it is also clear that her readings has been filtered through two lens.

The first is Marxism.Given her working class background and where/when Feinberg grew up and lived prior to this book, it makes perfect sense this would be one of the lens she views history through.Marxism is still a valid if debated theory of historical interpretation but it is rarely sufficient to explain everything.

Feinberg's second lens is her own natural desire to find others like herself, others who do not neatly fit into the social defined gender categories. While this desire is natural it should never be can excuse to misinterpret evidence or to view other cultures with your own biases. But let's be honest, many well-trained historians do this.

Therefore I cannot fault a layperson too much for historical interpretations I may have issue with but instead I should look at where such information is gleaned. The fact is that the vast majority of Feinberg's statements are drawn from published students by scholars and wouldbe scholars.

What I like about this book is that she attempts to pull together a wide range of information and couple it with the political, social, and economic struggles of transgendered people today. The stories are powerful and pulled from a variety of times and places though I noticed a very large amount of Native American information.

This book came out 12 years ago so I would urge Feinberg to reflect on this and revise it to include more evidence and interpretations as well as an update on civil rights for those who cannot or refuse to live nicely in a gender box.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Joan Baez of trans
Love or hate hir, Feinberg, like Joan Baez, raises the flag with the broadest possible coloring. Since when was subtlety required of agitprop? Sure, the Lady Skimmington citation is utopian; on the other hand, Feinberg (unlike almost every feminist) actually gets Engels, so right on. Streamlined, overdetermined? All the better, I say. Hey, Baez's greatest artistic moment was announcing (on the Johnny Carson Show!) her withholding of taxes to protest Vietnam; her LPs were secondary. That's the spirit in which I took this book. In the Top 5 of TG texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Transgender Warriors
Although the sections of this book dealing with contemporary issues are reasonably accurate, many historians have pointed out that the history section desperately needed to have been vetted by someone who studies the subject.
Among the numerous errors, the section on Joan of Arc contains more than the usual quota:
1) The author was unaware of a number of basic points concerning the cross-dressing issue. Eyewitness accounts contain quotations from Joan herself stating that she continued wearing a specific type of soldiers' clothing in prison because its securely-fastened pants and tunic offered the only protection she had against attempted rape - the Condemnation transcript itself admits that this clothing was secured with dozens of cords attaching both layers of pants to the tunic. Her motive was necessity, as many of the tribunal members later confirmed. These men also confirmed that she was induced into a "relapse" by a regimen of increased rape attempts followed by the simple expedient of leaving her nothing else to wear but the male outfit. These are basic points which were overlooked by this book, whose version has little in common with history.
2) She was not a pagan. Eyewitness accounts prove this, as do extant letters which Joan dictated to scribes during her military campaigns: these contain phrases such as "King Jesus, King of Heaven and of all the world, my rightful and sovereign Lord". The names "Jesus, Mary" generally serve as the heading. One letter, dated 23 March 1430, orders a group called the Hussites to "return to the Catholic faith" or else she will lead a crusading army against them. Her trial, as we know from English government records and the later statements of the tribunal members, was deliberately rigged by the English in order to convict her for the purposes of revenge, rather than from a sincere belief that she held heretical views.
3) The Marxist and Feminist issues are anachronisms which additionally involve some ironies. Her stated and accomplished goal, after all, was to place her king on his throne, not to overthrow either the aristocracy nor the patriarchy. None of her many recorded statements imply feminist beliefs, nor anything equivalent to Marxism.

There are other books which document genuine cases of transgenderism in history. This is not one of them, and this portion of the book regrettably does a disservice to a field which has far too often been harmed by invalid or poor scholarship.

Excerpt: Supermodel of the World -Released in 1993 on Tommy Boy Records, it peaked at #109 on the Billboard 200. Its instant (and unexpected) popularity amongst all types of people triggered the ascent of RuPaul to celebrity status. Before the release of the album RuPaul was a known name mostly for being the only drag queen supermodel (thus the album's name.) The first single from the album, "Supermodel (You Better Work)", was a huge club and dance hit that peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved Gold sales status. The video clip for the song was put into heavy rotation on MTV; this was a huge surprise to RuPaul and her record label as, at the time, the music being heavily played on MTV was grunge and rock and roll. The album was reissued on Rhino Records. The album's songs take many of the trends and colloquialisms of the drag queen and gay subcultures and turns them into dance, disco and house tracks. "House of Love" is an all-encompassing anthem of acceptance of all people. "Back to My Roots" is a play on words, referring both to ethnic heritage and to hairstyles. "A Shade Shady" references what was, at the time, a popular catch phrase in the gay community. (Someone who is "shady" is untrustworthy; though obviously not exclusive to gay people, in the early 90's the term was extremely prevalent in gay slang.) African-American actress/comedienne LaWanda Page (best known as Aunt Esther on the television program Sanford and Son) was featured in spoken word clips on and appeared in the music videos for a variety of tracks o...http://booksllc.net/?id=982175 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! RuPaul is: Starbooty! is an extremely low-budget underground film trilogy starring and co-produced by then-unfamous drag queen RuPaul. Because it was produced on a very low budget, various posters, advertisements and video covers alternate the spelling between "Starbooty" and "Starrbooty". Filmed on a zero-dollar budget, the movies are a pastiche of 1960s blaxploitation films. RuPaul stars as Starbooty, a crime fighting federal agent who disposes of villains while getting entangled in romantic liaisons. At the time, RuPaul was still participating in a type of drag known as genderfuck; as such his appearance generally is of a man with feminine makeup and clothes, but no padding or taping to make the body look female.Outside the canon of the actual films, a sketch on RuPaul's VH1 talk show continued the storyline of the character of Starbooty with a preview for an alleged new film called "Starbooty in: Take That You Honky Bitch". ... Excerpt: "The Little Drummer Boy" is a popular Christmas song, with words and music by Katherine K. Davis. "Harry is a little Drummerboy"Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone have been credited with writing the song, even though they were only the arrangers for their recordings of it. The version that made the song popular was the one sung and recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale. It is also known as the "Carol of the Drum". Davis first composed the words and music for "Carol of the Drum" (ostensibly transcribed from a traditional Czech carol) in 1941. In 1957 Onorati arranged the song for a recording by the Jack Halloran Singers on Dot Records, but this version was not released in time for Christmas. The following year Simeone re-arranged the song yet again and retitled it for his Chorale's hit single version, which was issued on 20th Fox Records' 45-121 with a 45rpm picture sleeve, then on their LP called Sing We Now of Christmas, which became an enormous bestseller. In 1963 the company, now known as 20th Century Fox Records, retitled and reissued their album. It was now called The Little Drummer Boy: A Christmas Festival, in order to boost sales even higher, as the 45-rpm single had continued to be a seasonal hit. The LP record jacket, presumably misleadingly, boasted the credit Original Version in reference to the song. The album was first issued only in mono, then in stereo a year later.
