5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Russell
Received in good condition.Christmas present so I don't know if there is anything wrong with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Jane Russell!
This book is enjoyable and written in a great conversational style as if Jane is narrating stories from chapters of her life.
She emphasized how Almighty God had blessed, helped and guided her journey that led her to became a devoted and committed born-again Christian.Another good reason to purchase this book is due to world renowned portrait of Jane in the cover which taken from "The Outlaw" Promotional Poster.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite religious - if that bothers you, don't bother but.....
One of my hobbies is reading biographies and autobiographies of the Hollywood stars from the 1930s to the 1950s. I find these people ultimately fascinating - how they stories differ, intertwine, and yet are the same in some respects. I'm always amazed by how many of them had either no or deceased fathers (Jane Russell included). If you are bothered by anyone speaking their mind about their religious beliefs, this is not the book for you (and neither is Ginger Rogers' autobiography). Jane Russell presents her story in a straight forward, down to earth, no excuses manner. Not exactly professionally written but readable nonetheless. It doesn't deserve the lambasting a previous reviewer gave it. ... Read more

Product Description
The authors point to scientifically documented parapsychological phenomena as indicators that consciousness extends beyond the individual self.Amazon.com Review
Scientist Russell Targ and spiritual healer Jane Katra (Miracles of Mind)join forces again, successfully blending their fascinating researchand insights on life and spirit. On the surface, this book is aprofound and intelligent discussion of where mysticism andparapsychological science intersect. But at its core, this is a tenderbook about living a life of peace and feeling connected to universallove. In the opening chapters, the authors address the illusion thatwe are separate from other beings--one that has tainted our scientificand spiritual models for decades. From here the authors move intoscientific evidence for mind-to-mind and spirit-to-spirit connectionsand how to experience this "oneness" (or, as the title suggests, howto experience God) through freeing the heart and quieting the mind.

Their most groundbreaking chapter is "Why Scientists Pray," in whichthe authors challenge the stereotype of the cold, unfeeling scientistand show us just how dedicated and spiritual the heart of a scientistcan truly be. This is an especially supportive book for contemporaryscientists who are trying to break out of the current mold and createa more mystical and intuitive approach to inquiry. --GailHudson ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Exploring various mystical views.
I enjoyed this book, but I didn't think it was really about how to experience God without belief. Many of the belief systems in the world were touched upon in this text. I was inspired to explore Christian Mysticism and Gnosticism more deeply after being introduced to these ideas. I did not find the sections on ESP and transpersonal psychology interesting. I find them both to be weak equivalents to traditional science.Still the book offerred me a lot of food for thought about how man can explore the existence of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading.
Most people accept God "on faith."People who need evidence of some kind have been left to manage as best they can.Jane Katra, Ph.D. and Russell Targ wrote In The Heart Of The Mind:How To Experience God WithoutBelief to "describe a comprehensible spirituality, one in whichexperience takes primacy over religious belief."They add that,"as scientists we are convinced that a person need not believe or takeon faith anything about the existence of the universal spirit, because theexperience of God is a testable hypothesis." Dr. Katra has been aspiritual healer for more than twenty-five years. She holds a doctorate inhealth education and also works with people in strengthening their immunesystems.Targ helped develop the laser, and has researched psychicphenomena since the 1970s.He's written several books, including Miraclesof the Mind with Dr. Katra. Their research clearly indicates that"consciousness extends beyond the individual self."Theymaintain that anyone willing to quiet their mind and open their heart willexperience the universal spirit. It isn't necessary to "embrace thedogma of any particular religion in order to have spirituality in ourlives." Katra and Targ's premise is that people do not have to giveup their minds in order to welcome God into their lives. They citedocumented research that confirms the existence of "consciousnessunimpeded by the limitations of time and distance" and describehospital research that verifies the benefits of prayer and spiritualhealing. They also discuss the laws of physics and traditionalphilosophies, showing how "modern scientific evidence ofparapsychological phenomena fits with millennia of mystical wisdomteachings." The Heart Of The Mind is for all those caught betweendesiring to experience something more than themselves, but unable to accepttraditional religious concepts. It provides the foundation for recognizingtheir inherent spirituality and expanding their awareness of an universalspirit.

4-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
I read this through in one sitting, I found it so absorbing. It had a looser feel to me, though, than their first book, and I wonder whether I would have found it as engaging had I not already read their MIRACLES OFMIND first. As an artist, I am fascinated by nonlocal consciousness in thecreative process. As a very secular University of Chicago-trainedeconomist, however, hearing the word "God" is like a red-flag. Uhoh... I just can't take seriously "God," that Big Bearded Daddyin the Sky who's going to love you or punish you or whatever, depending onwhose "Bible" you want to consult. As for the "Goddess"stuff, don't get me started. What I'm saying is, it was a relief and adelight to read a book about nonlocal consciousness and the creativeprocess without, as the book says, having to believe in "god". Ihighly recommend this book, though one might want to have a look atMIRACLES OF MIND first. This is the desert, that was the meat 'n veg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Splendid, Eye-opening
It expands on the incredible, ground breaking work started by the late, great L. Ron Hubbard. This book should be called DIANETICS 2.Quite simply one of the most profound reading experiences I have ever had.Iknow the authors are students of Hubbard, and they carry on his traditionwith exquisite accuracy. They are not weird lunatics, they are gods, asare we.Praise them.Praise me.Praise you.We are not flakes, we justget it.

1-0 out of 5 stars One boring life that she tries very hard to make sound interesting
This woman is a wack job! I think she lost a few brain cells during her boozing years. You would think that being a HUGE Bible blubbering Christian she would try and down play her sluttiness with that book cover shot from her first movie (that was considered PORNO back in the day mind you) but I guess she is trying to find the "humor" in it. yeah right. Typical Fundamentalist Christian making up their own rules as they go along but always passing judgement on everyone else not Bible worthy.
She spews out Bible speak constantly as she rattles her story out trying to make her 'story' sound overly dramatic as a typical actress would(they lived in their imaginary heads back then). So she had arguments with her pro football player hubby..big deal..that's commonplace stuff. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz a very very uninteresting read from a very uninteresting person. ... Read more

Product Description

The most beautiful photo book on Marilyn ever published! All iconic images from Avedon to Weegee. Marilyn Monroe posed for nearly every major photographer of her day. This pictorial chronicle features pictures by Richard Avendon, Cecil Beaton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Elliott Erwitt, Philippe Halsman, Weegee, and thirty other artists: her early days as a model for ads and pinup calendars, film stills that follow her career from a minor actress to a major star, famous master portraits and shots by paparazzi who trailed her every move.

Marilyn emerges in all her moods - young and carefree, sexy and serious, glamorous and girl-next-door. In a fascinating and revealing interview with French writer Georges Belmont Marilyn sets the record straight about her early life, her ambitions, fears, and dreams. Jane Russell, a friend of Marilyn's and her co-star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, wrote an affectionate foreword.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe and the Camera...A wonderful Marriage!
For any fan Of Marilyn as i am, this is a book that must be added to your library as it is to mine. You won't regreat this wonderful find!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
This book is amazing, I own a ton of Marilyn books and this is among my favorite, picture-wise especially! It is a huge book and well worth the price. All of the pictures are printed on thick glossy paper just the way I like it. As many other reviewers have stated this book does have alot of the poses that made Marilyn famous and that are associated with the legend she has become today, but there are also some not so common ones as well. I LOVE this book and no Marilyn fans library is complete without it. It is the ultimate picture book, so for those of you that dont want to purchase the books by her individual photographers then this is perfect as theres a little bit of everything here!

This is a great book, a few pictures are grainy, but 95% are sharp rich and gorgeously clear.
I was shocked that I had not seen some of the images. I collect her images, and have a lot of them on my computer that most people haven't seen. So this is a stellar collection indeed and a must for Marilyn fans. I have the "Marilyn A life in Pictures" and still this book had even more. I do recommend both books highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars All the necessities
This book features pictures from Marilyn's life ranging from her modeling days as Norma Jeane up until her death. You get many of the "classic" Monroe photos here, including the gold dress, the white dress scene from the Seven Year Itch, and several movie stills.Several candid shots are also included as well as some lesser seen ones from photograph sessions.Jane Russell paints an endearing picture of Monroe in the forward. We also get an interview with Monroe. It is a widely known fact that Marilyn embellished parts of her childhood and she does so here, claiming her mother is dead, when Marilyn's mom actually outlived her for more than 30 years.Nevertheless, Monroe appears beautiful, vulnerable, ans sensuous all rolled into one in these images. You get a lot of pics for a reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great collection of photos
I love this book because it is pure marilyn. The book shows her at her best. There are no conspiracies, scandals or judgements made about her in this book. It is just about the love that she had for the camera. She understood the camera better that anyone I can think of and it is her element, like a fish in water. Many authors write books on her to try to explain who she was,(99% of them never even knew her.) but all you have to do to really know her is study her pictures. They truly reveal every aspect of her, and that's why this book was made. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Photographs, Third Rate Writing
Published in 1985, LEADING MEN is a coffee table book in classic style: oversized and containing numerous photographs.

The book opens with a brief foreword by Jane Russell and longer introduction by author Julie Welch. It then breaks into six parts: The Silent Era, The Studio Years, The War Years, The Fifties, The Sixties, and Modern Times--the latter focusing on actors who were at their peak in the 1970s.Welch offers a brief introduction to each section and a general biography of each star.

While no book of this sort can hope to fully encompass its subject, Welch makes some very odd choices.Silent film has long been famous for its master comics, but you will find nothing of Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, or Arbuckle here.Indeed, Welch gives comic actors little concession, ignoring The Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Abbott and Costello, and Martin and Lewis entirely. She equally ill-disposed toward western stars, making no mention of Tom Mix, Randolph Scott, Roy Rogers, or Audie Murphy--and reducing John Wayne to precisely one photograph and one paragraph. At the same time, she gives space to a number of truly obscure actors (when is the last time you heard any one mention Michael Wilding or David Hemmings?) and several European actors who, while famous indeed in their own countries, never obtained wider notice.

Welch's biographies are poorly researched. In discussing Gene Kelly, for example, she mentions THE PIRATE as one his great screen hits, when in truth it received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the 1948 box office. She is also dodgy with her facts, never mentioning that Ramon Novarro was homosexual and prefering to write that David Niven died of a "wasting disease" than simply note that he died from ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease--and one has to wonder if she actually knew anything about Novarro's sexuality or Niven's cause of death in the first place. This aside, her tone of voice is chatty without being in the least amusing, entertaining, or interesting, and the book has been badly proofed, if indeed it was ever proofed at all.

Still, where this sort of book is concerned, it is really the photographs that count. All photographs are black and white; all are handsomely reproduced; all are either studio portraits or lifted directly from film. It's nice to flip through. At the same time, however, I cannot say that any of these photographs are unique. The same photographs--or if not precisely the same then ones very much like them--are available here, there, and everywhere.Even so, it is nice to find them in a single collection, and I give this book three stars on that basis.
