On the brink of her fortieth birthday, Susan Ryan Jordan heard the dreadedwords "You have breast cancer." In shock over what she thought was a certaindeath sentence, Jordan began to read a book her doctor, the now famous BernieSiegel, gave to her, which challenged cancer patients to heal themselves. Immersed in this hopeful message Jordantook stock of her life.

While shocking, Jordan's cancer diagnosis was somehow strangely expected.She had become ensnared in the trap of "fitting in," obeying the dictates ofher religion, her family and the social strictures of her town. A painfuldivorce and temporary leave of her four children for financial reasons only fueled her guilt and overwhelming sense of loss. Despair andself-deprecation had left her open to this life-threatening illness.

Jordan's beautifully written and very poignant personal account reveals howchanging negative feelings to hope and confidence can, indeed, reverse thecourse of a disease-even cancer. She also reveals how the still unresolved andpainful split with her daughter, actress Meg Ryan, was caused by her newfoundself-confidence and strength, and writes that the journey to health sometimesinvolves loss, but always leads to understanding and serenity.

This is a book of hope-an affirmation that true healing and peace is withineveryone's each.

Highly Recommended!!
This book is a richly detailed memoir of a particular woman and time... it is the story of the author, growing up in 1950's New England, who felt obliged to obey the dictates of her family, religion and society and who suffered the loss of her own self-worth.It is a fascinating portrait of a woman who discovered her true self through her life threatening illness and literally willed herself well. The author is a 28 year breast cancer survivor. The book has recently been honored with an Arts and Excellence award from the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation, which is studying it as part of their research programs. The book is in the reading libraries of hospitals and the author has been a spokeswoman for The American Cancer Society and The Susan G. Komen Foundation. The author describes herself as "a classic breast cancer personality who became a classic breast cancer survivor." The book is a deeply personal and inspiring account of one woman's triumph over lessons of her past in order to recover her health and a joyful future. I recommend it highly.

The ties that bind....
Meg chose to violate her mother's privacy, and I give her mother cudo's for speaking out and defending herself. Like Meg, Susan chose to leave an unhappy marriage; Unlike Meg, she was not making millions of dollars, and I am sure had to make some choices based on survival.How many of our mothers had the choices that MEG has now, my mother sure did not. Life is not perfect; nor is anyone. I can only hope Meg can avoid the pain of losing a parent one day without saying goodbye, like I did. Excellent readings
Not sure why the accents would bother anyone. My kids started listening to these at around age 3, and they still demand to re-listen. Never once hada problem understanding what was being said, or at least never had a complaint. Holly Hunter's readings, in particular, are spectacular. My wife and I love them as well, I should admit. That second billy goat Gruff is just a killer. So is the last of the three pigs. Really just great readings.

Though refreshing in its approach, there areflaws
What attracted me to this compilation of stories on audio CD was the stars associated with it such as Holly Hunter and Meg Ryan. I was curious to see how they would narrate stories for children. Well, I found the new additions such as plot twists etc quite refreshing, but my preschooler found it hard to understand the Southern US accents in the narration, and I felt the producers of the CD should have stuck to a neutral accent given the target listening audience. The accompanying music was ok. On the whole, I much prefer Jim Weiss' storytelling recordings which are clear, succint and easy to understand.

Unique retelling
This is a unique retelling.The voices in some stories are grating to me, but the children are highly entertained while I play this from my iPhone during waits in doctors offices or car repair places.

Disappointed
These stories are classic ones, beloved by generations of children. Here they are told with zest and a few new twists. I wonder why there is such an emphasis on southern US accents, but never mind: Holly Hunter and Meg Ryan have done a stellar job.

Based on reviews of similar CDs, I was afraid the music might be intrusive, but it isn't.

My only complaint - and it's a big one - is with the recording quality. Each story appears to have been recorded in 2-3 sections, and many times a section breaks off suddenly in mid-sentence. So words/phrases are missing, sometimes at crucial junctures. This is completely unacceptable.
