Product Description
Although in the UK and other industrial countries, wealth and affluence are widely perceived to be growing, this is not the same as genuine human development. "Poverty in Plenty" draws on the work of leading research institutes and campaigning groups, to assess the real state of society and of human development in the UK. The results it presents are far from reassuring, in absolute terms and for the trends revealed. The contributions show how widespread poverty is in many of things that make life worthwhile: education, diet, health, mobility, participation, consumption.
The results will be startling and of vital importance to all those working on social issues in the public and voluntary sectors, as well as many students and general readers wanting the truth behind the public statistics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting below the surface
Most people tend to be slightly superficial, therefore staying above the surface level of basically any situation.Well here's a great self-help book that delves deep into the psychological and analytical, and is one hell of an information center. What this book is saying is simple:that most of our looks are really under our skin, and most of the times we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, to use an old adage. You don't think you're attractive to others?Nonsense.Do you think you're sexy underneath the surface but are finding it hard to broadcast this message to the women of the world? No problem. This book cured me, and I constantly look to it for spiritual as well as everyday help. ... Product Description
This report explores the current state of end-of-life care policy and practice in the UK. It focuses in particular on the experiences of older people and incorporates their views and the views of carers. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, analysis of data from an ESRC-funded study, and the outcomes of a consultation exercise with older people hosted by Help the Aged, the report: identifies the range of patterns and circumstances of death and dying In old age; outlines the current policy and practice context; compares the experiences of older people who receive specialist palliative care and those who do not; and explores key issues in older people's accounts of death, dying and bereavement, including their practical, social and spiritual concerns. The issues raised in the report will feed into current debates such as those around palliative health and end-of-life care, and right-to-die legislation. With consideration of the implications for policy and practice, End-of-life care is important reading for all those involved in health and social care planning and provision, as well as in the formal or informal care of older people who are dying. ... Product Description
The UK's performance on poverty and deprivation ranks 16th out of 18 industrialized countries ? People living in Glasgow Shettleston are 3.8 times more likely to die before they are 65 years old than those living in Wokingham.

In industrialized countries, wealth and affluence are widely perceived to be growing, although not at the same rate for everyone. But economic growth is not the same as genuine human development. Poverty in Plenty applies accepted measures of human poverty – education, health and employment – to the UK, and assesses how our food and housing policies contribute to a sustainable way of life. It draws on the work of leading research institutes and campaigning groups to determine the real state of society in the UK. Using a range of indicators to measure livelihoods and well-being, the report shows how widespread poverty is and highlights the vast geographical disparities in levels of poverty that exist within the UK. It goes on to set out what urgently needs to be done to address the sobering trends revealed and describes effective policies that will allow us to improve the current situation. The findings are of vital importance to those working on social issues in the public and voluntary sectors, and to students and general readers wanting the truth behind the public statistics. ... Product Description
The development of the intensive care unit stands as an expression of a post war medical revolution in which the means have become available to deflect and defer death almost indefinitely. Here, cultural expectations of medical heroism are conjoined with images of the most exacting and precise application of medical science. However, the use of an arsenal of scientific and technological advances to try and pull dying people back from the very brink of death has, it might be argued, leapt ahead of our ability to deal with the professional, social, ethical and financial. This book explores how the withdrawal of active medical treatment is managed in intensive care units, placing this in the context of detailed patient case studies. It examines, in particular, the notion of 'natural death' in this highly technological health care setting, and explores how doctors and nurses strive to achieve this for dying people and their families. It draws extensively on the experiences of patients' families, doctors and nurses, using interview and observational data. It is a timely account of the practical, ethical and emotional difficulties of end of life care in this complex setting .The book will be of interest to nurses working with dying people in acute hospital environments, to those engaged in the sociology of death and dying, and in the conduct of ethnographic research in this field.consequences thrown up by its use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Book
This is a lovely book, which focuses on family togetherness. The illustrations are beautiful. It would make a nice gift for twins.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck!
I'm sure every parent has that one book on the shelf that he hopes his child doesn't pick for bedtime reading. For me, it's this book.
It's important for me to show my children that reading is fun. But, when I don't like a book, it's hard to make it exciting for my kids.

The writing is, shall I say, childish.Maybe a child just learning to read would find the book stimulating, but reading it to my three-year-old is a chore.

The story of Lady Jane making cookies for Big Jim's fishing trip goes awry when This One and That One (their kits) eat almost all the cookies. The story takes a strange turn into sexual innuendo when Jane and Jim share an intimate moment on the beach.Jane and Jim dance, and he starts panting and becomes very excited about getting his "cookies," but the kits spoil it all by popping up at an inopportune time.

Funny? Sort of.Weird? Yeah.Tough to read? No doubt about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Super Lame
This book stinks. There is nothing to it.It is pure gibberish.

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS ONE AND THAT ONE SMELL COOKIES BAKING!!!
Actress Jane Seymour and her husband, Actor James Keach, are among the latest celebrities to jump on the children's book bandwagon and are doing so very successfully. They've created a wonderful series of books in which their family of cats stand-in for their own family, allowing them to share their own experiences as parents and at the same time delighting children with the tales of their twin kittens, "This One and That One."

In "Yum", the twin kittens smell cookies baking as it's time for them to go off to bed. They want cookies but Lady Jane cat explains that the cookies are for dad to take when he goes fishing.Off to bed go the kids as mom packs the cookies in a picnic basket. But the kids cannot get the vision and smell of those cookies out of their heads. They sneak downstairs and crawl right into the basket and then mom carries it out to dad who is fishing by the shore.Well, the kittens did a number on those cookies but each saved a big cookie for dad as the book closes with the family dancing on the beach.

As with their other books, "Yum" is very anecdotal in its story relating the very simple stories that all parents experience with their kids.As our own kids can sometimes be, This One and That One can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance, but they're always adorable and filled with love. The book is complemented with the excellent illustrations of Geoffrey Planer who helps bring it all to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story!!!
I bought this book when my oldest's second Christmas(he's now seven.) It has since been read over a 1000 times!!! My children love the entire series about This One & That One so much that they've taken to calling a family friend "Big Jim." I highly recommend all the books in this series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought one copy of this book to read and see if I wanted to give it as a gift to my nieces and nephews. All of the stories are beautifully told and illustrated.By the last story, I was in tears, my heart so very touched.Of course I ordered several copies for my family, but I also kept one for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a lovely book of Bible Stories
My aunt gave my children this book of Bible Stories to my children for Christmas. Its so warmly, lovingly written and the illustrations are beautiful. My children will love it for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Stories with a Personal Touch
Nana's Bible Stories will definitely become a Christian children's classic. The stories are told with such vivid description and from the point of view of very relatable characters.Nana has Balaam's Donkey give us the skinny in "A Donkey's Tale".The story of David and Goliath is related by one of David's more timid friends. We experience the parable of the Lost Sheep as we frisk along with a rebellious little lamb and we view the crucifixion through the eyes of a sad and curious butterfly. I have heard each of the Bible stories since childhood but Nana manages to make them fresh and give them more vivid life.I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is a must have for those of us who wish to pass on Biblical values to our children and grandchildren in a way that they will never forget.Don't be surprised if while reading them you are moved to laughter and tears. It is part of Nana's magic.Don't miss this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Reading but Terrific Information
As far as I am aware, this is the only biography of Jane Seymour in existence, and Ms. Gross has done an excellent job with it. Having traveled to England herself and visited the Savernake, conducting research on the Seymour family that came to power some five centuries ago, she has uncovered a great deal of information on the mysterious woman who managed to supplant the wife Henry VIII moved Heaven and Earth to have and to hold. Though his first two marriages are well documented and both Katharine and Anne are popular figures in history, Jane Seymour has somehow alluded us. In Ms. Gross's novel one can trace her life as never before; the history of her family and her home at Wolfhall, interesting information on her parents and their influence on her life, and her story of coming to Court and serving the Queen(s) before her. By revealing some of the shadowy mysteries of Wolfhall, Pamela Gross has taken us beyond Alison Weir's or Antonia Fraser's thorough research on Jane's reign as Queen to further understand the woman wearing the crown. It's no pleasure read though; the book is made up like a research essay with footnotes and sources. For any fellow researchers, I think you will find "Jane the Quene" to be the ideal biography on Henry's third wife. ... Read more

Product Description
Dr. Harold Seymour has pioneered the scholarly study of baseball.Hailed by Sports Illustrated as the "Edward Gibbon of baseball history," he is the first professional historian to produce an authoritative, multivolume chronicle of America's national pastime. The first two volumes of this study--The Early Years and The Golden Age--won universal acclaim. The New York Times wrote that they "will grip every American who has invested part of his youth and dreams in the sport," while The Boston Globe called them "irresistible."
Now, in The People's Game, the third volume of Baseball, Dr. Seymour offers the first book devoted entirely to the history of the game outside of the professional leagues, revealing how, from its early beginnings up to World War II, baseball truly became the great American pastime. He looks at the bond between baseball and boys through the decades, the game's place in institutions from colleges to prisons to the armed forces, the rise of women's baseball with nineteenth century feminism, and the struggles of black players and clubs from the later years of slavery up to the Second World War.The national sport pops up in the most unexpected places, from the cavalrymen's game at Fort Apache called off because of Geronimo's escape, to the scene of Philippine head-hunters enthusiastically playing ball, to General MacArthur as player/manager of the Fort Leavenworth team bringing in professional ringers. And the contests Dr. Seymour describes are as vivid and exciting as yesterday's game.
Whether discussing the birth of softball or the origins of the seventh inning stretch, Dr. Seymour enriches his wide research with fascinating details and entertaining anecdotes as well as his own wealth of baseball experience. The People's Game brings to life the central role of baseball for generations of Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Web Site Features the Author
Baseball: The People's Game is the third volume in the series of this famous work and the best of the three books. It's about the way people played amateur and semipro ball all over the country, in schools and colleges, on sandlots, even in prisons and on reservations. It includes five chapters on early women's baseball and of course material on the black clubs and leagues. I'm the wife and assistant of the late author, Dr. Harold Seymour, the historian of baseball. To read more about his baseball books, visit my web site, http://www.DorothyJaneMills.com. Soon I will be opening a new web site about his work: www.HaroldSeymour.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stories About Baseball!
Harold Seymour made the right move as a kid when he waited on Bedford Avenue outside the right field fence at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn to catch home runs hit off the bats of Dolph Camilli and Pete Reiser. Thus began a love affair with the game that has blossomed into three great booksincluding "The People's Game," maybe the best. Seymour goes intogreat detail about aspects of the game as they relate not to the bigleagues or even to the bushes but to stories and anecdotes that anybody whohas ever played the game can relate to, especially us old timers. If you'remy age, you probably remember continually taping up the .35 ball after thecover came off, generally about the second inning. If it was a really biggame, you probably used white medical tape that you had purloined from themedicine chest. But in all likelihood, you used the much more utilitarianblack friction tape from the garage. The ball had to last the whole game asno one had another thirty five cents for a second one. And do you rememberwhen there just weren't enough gloves to go around and you had to share amitt with your opposing player? A myriad of rememberances await readers ofthis love letter to our National Pastime. But they are six hundred of theliveliest, most interesting pages any player or fan of the game will everread. Go read this home run of a book! It's a gem. ... Read more

Product Description
"It has been a true pleasure to have had the opportunity to peruse the second edition of Palliative Care Nursing.... This book, authored predominately by UK-based experts, succeeds in presenting sophisticated thoughts in readily accessible language… Each chapter begins with a summary of key points, with both classic and new relevant literature well integrated into the text. I have also been particularly impressed with the editors' final chapter, in which they synthesize a number of crucial issues for the future development of palliative care… this second edition makes a significant contribution to both the palliative care literature as well as to nursing literature."
Carol Tishelman, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

"I find Palliative Care Nursing a very attractive book for nurses but also for other disciplines to learn about nursing and to learn about palliative care. The book is voluminous, informative and educationally well constructed. Frameworks and models in this book will give nurses the opportunity to make up their own process to offer support and be a carer for the incurably ill person and his/her family as a skilled companion…. This book gives the possibility for nurses to spread one clear voice about palliative care nursing. Congratulations to all the authors…."
Martine De Vlieger, Palliatieve Hulpverlening Antwerpen v.z.w., University of Antwerp, Belgium

"This book should be compulsory reading for nurses and other health care workers who are involved in the care of people in the final stages of life. It providesa comprehensive account of the major issues (clinical, professional, sociological and political) that confront contemporary palliative care while also offering strategies to move forward. The ‘real world’ of palliative care is described and critiqued and the rhetoric is dispensed with. This book is a vital resource for nursing practice, learning and teaching."
Associate Professor, Peter Hudson (RN, PhD). Director of the Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education, St Vincent’s Hospital and The University of Melbourne, Australia.

"This is an excellent book for anyone completing either an academic qualification or who wants to understand the who, what and where of palliative care both in the UK and abroad. Its detail is balanced with case studies and practical illustrations that bring the academic nature of its writing to life...For reference purposes for anyone completing academic work it has to be an absolute must."
Nursing Times

"The book is very user friendly with key points outlined at the beginning of each chapter and a comprehensive list of further reading and references at the end. Although the writing is easily accessible the concepts and theories are thought provoking."
Jean Buchanan, Community Liaison sister, Sheffield

The second edition of this innovative textbook has been extensively revised and updated to reflect new global developments in palliative care. This textbook reviews current research and examines the evidence base for palliative care policy and practice. Over a third of the chapters are newly commissioned from leading international contributors.

Building on the widely acclaimed original edition, the textbook focuses on palliative care for adults in a variety of care environments. The first three sections use a novel framework – the trajectory of life-limiting illness – to cover key issues including:

  • What happens to people as they become ill
  • How individuals cope as they near death and are dying
  • How families and friends deal with bereavement and loss
The final section addresses contemporary issues in nursing and inter-professional working.

The book is written with helpful overviews and in an informative and reader-friendly style. There are numerous examples of clinical situations and research studies which are examined in depth to illustrate debates in palliative care. The textbook spans the range of end-of-life contexts which are of relevance to practitioners, educationalists and researchers.

Palliative Care Nursing is essential reading for post-qualification nursing students and all nurses and health and social care professionals who provide care to people with advanced illness and those who are near the end of life. This broad ranging critical text will be invaluable to students and practitioners working with people and their families near the end of life. (20081104) ... Read more

Baronet of Berry Pomeroy, William Seymour, 2. Duke of Somerset, Michael Seymour, Francis Seymour, 1. Baron Seymour of Trowbridge, Edward Seymour, Viscount Beauchamp, Edward Seymour, 1. Earl of Hertford. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Jane Seymour (1508 - 24 October 1537) was Queen consort of England as the third wife of King Henry VIII. She succeeded Anne Boleyn as Queen Consort following the latter's execution in 1536. She died of postnatal complications less than two weeks after the birth of her only child, a son who briefly reigned as Edward VI. Jane Seymour was the daughter of Sir John Seymour of Wiltshire and Margery Wentworth. Through her maternal grandfather, she was a descendant of King Edward III of England and the Percy family. Because of this, she and King Henry VIII were fifth cousins three times removed. She was a second cousin to her predecessor Anne Boleyn, sharing a great-grandmother, Elizabeth Cheney. Since it was customary for the attendant company to mark every year of the deceased's life in numbers, this implies she was born in 1508. She was not educated as highly as King Henry's previous wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. She could read and write a little but was much better at needlework and household management, which were considered much more necessary for women. Jane's needlework was reported to be beautiful and elaborate; some of her work survived up to 1652, when it is recorded to have been given to the Seymour family. After her death, it was noted that Henry was an "enthusiastic embroiderer". She became a maid-of-honour in 1532 to Queen Catherine, but Jane may have served Catherine as early as 1527, and went on to serve Queen Anne Boleyn. The first report of Henry VIII's interest in Jane Seymour was in February 1536. Jan...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: An English royal mistress is the unofficial title used to refer to the person who held the position of unmarried lover to the king of England either before or after his accession to the throne. Female lovers were, by convention, the most easily acknowledged, and often became influential individuals. However, there appear to have also been male love interests to monarchs, both male and female, who also wielded considerable influence. However, as this was not an official position of any kind, the influence of all Royal lovers was precarious, linked inextricably with their ability to hold the monarch's interest. The primary reason a king would take a mistress seems to be the fact that royal marriages were rarely, if ever, based on love alone.
