5-0 out of 5 stars Agreat book for children.
Although this book was initially written for juveniles, anyone who is a fan of the Martin Sheen family will enjoy this well written book. The Sheens seem to be a close-knit family according to the authors, who describe Sheen's acting career and concern for social causes. In addition to the story about the Sheens, there are many color pictures of the whole family, including wife Janet and the lesser known Ramon. I would especially recomend this book to any aspiring actor or actress..

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book.Good Pictures.
This book is great for fans of Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez or Martin Sheen. It has great pictures and great biographys on all of the 3 stars.I would really recommend this book to anyone who is a fan or just a person wanting to know more about the family. With 42 pages of pictures and text, I think this book is very professional and very informational on all three actors ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended as a profound and deeply faithful guide
The Jesus Meditations: A Guide For Contemplation by Michael Kennedy (Pastor, Dolores Mission Parish, East Los Angeles) is a unique book enhanced an accompanying audio CD narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Martin Sheen. Simple black-and-white line drawings of Jesus administering to the needy appear in this contemplative book, divided into many meditations. Each brief section features a statement of grace for which the reader may strive, the setting and story of a given excerpt of scripture, the scripture itself, a poetic meditation, and an offering of reflective questions as to how one can better understand and improve oneself and one's soul. The Jesus Meditations are highly recommended as a profound and deeply faithful guide to offering worship and embracing Jesus Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars A one-of-a-kind book
The message of this book is simple.By focusing on the stories of the Gospels and trying to visualize the original location, people, sounds, and so forth, we can bring ourselves into the stories more fully. Then we can see how being right there with Jesus, as he heals, preaches, and proclaims the Good News, changes our hearts and gives us a different way to relate to Him.

This book is not the first to use this kind of visualization (which was also used by early Christians and elaborated by Ignatius Loyola), but it is the best. The author understands that visualization isn't about scholastic theology and persuasion -- it involves bringing Jesus into our hearts and being aware of -- and grateful for -- the transformation that occurs. For this reason, the appearance of actor Martin Sheen is a stroke of genius. There's a reason Sheen is always cast as the adviser, wise man, or (as in the West Wing) President of the U.S.A. -- his voice is soothing and easy to relax to, but is never gooey. He manages to convey intensity and relaxation at the same time.So on the CD accompanying the book, Sheen reads the imaginative portions, interspersed with Gospel readings and light (very unobtrusive) guitar in the background.

The publisher is promoting the CD as a great one to use during a busy day -- pop it into your car while stuck in traffic and so forth. But why sell yourself short?Go all out with this book.Take an afternoon off, by yourself or with friends who are also open to the experience.Sit silently for a little while to clear your mind of anxieties, then go through one or two of the meditations, using the CD, and take several minutes afterwards to let the experience sink in.Once you finish, you might want to have everyone write down a few thoughts that come to mind about the experience -- what did they notice about the Gospel story they had never noticed before? How does the story speak to them in ways they didn't expect?

However you use this book, you'll appreciate and cherish it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!!!...
Where do we find true happiness? This is probably one of the most debated questions in our lives. Father Michael Kennedy gives us in his new book, "The Jesus Meditations" a simple guide to find the answer to this fundamental question. Through this meditation book Father Kennedy introduces us a person that has always known the response: Jesus. But he does not presents us a biblicalJesus, lost in events that occurred millenniums ago, rather Father Kennedy gives us a Jesus, that is alive and working in our neighbor, in the persecuted, in the insecure, in our own selves. This Jesus is found in the hardest place, the last place we dare to look for him. Father Michael's Jesus is found in the deepest place, that place where we hide our emotions, our true selves. You can find Him in the first contemplation and become his partner, his traveling mate in the journey through his most jovial times to his most trying days. If we find and we want to become his partner, he tells us that us that now that we know the answer, our problems do not disappear -as an act of magic. Instead Jesus discloses that we will be exposed to bigger and more trying problems, but now -that we have found a truly loyal friend- we can face them with a much better resolve.

The stories before each meditation describe this encounter with the real Jesus. The persons who share his or her storyexpress, in a simple and concrete manner, how they were able to go down to that deep place and how this encounter has changed their lives. When reading this book be prepared to drift away from the text. You might find yourself smelling the rich oil that cured Sarah, gazing at the sun over the lake of Galilee, watching Jesus curing the lepers or even seen yourself helping him to heal others. Personally, I was deeply touched by the whole book, specially the meditation of a possessed man who, after talking with Jesus, is able to comprehend that his vices, his "demons" can be spelled out by recognizing them and facing them with his new friend.

The CD accompanying this book is an extra reward. Martin Sheen's voice and the melodic background music soothe whatever stress is caused by the bumper to bumper traffic of Los Angeles' freeways. On the balance this is a must have book. ... Read more

Product Description
Captain Paul Watson has rammed fishing trawlers, smashed whaling ships, sailed boldly into Soviet-controlled waters, and stood bravely on an ice floe between a baby harp seal and an oncoming seal boat. In this daring and sprawling memoir, the captain of the Sea Shepherd recounts his remarkable life on the front lines in the war to stop the viscious slaughter of the Canadian harp seal.

Seal Wars opens in 1996 with Paul Watson -- holed up in a hotel with Martin Sheen in the Magdalen Islands and facing an attacking mob of angry sealers -- being rescued by police and airlifted to safety. Watson recounts the childhood experiences that shaped his adult consciousness and environmental ethic. He records a history of the seal hunt (including all the tragedies, brutalities, and government mismanagement and obfuscation) from its beginning up to the rescue campaigns he courageously led from the prow of the Sea Shepherd.

Starting in 1976 with a Greenpeace crew off Labrador, Paul Watson has braved numerous forays onto the ice floes, many with such celebrities as Brigitte Bardot, Farley Mowat, Martin Sheen, and Pierce Brosnan. He has served time in prison, debated politicians, and quite often put his life on the line. In a passionate defense of environmental responsibility, Seal Wars guides us through the highs and lows, the defeats and successes of Watson's untiring devotion to this noble cause. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but biased
I bought this for a speech I was doing on the seal hunt in Canada. I found it to be informative, but pretty biased. I should have expected that from him though because that is his job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book is really inspiring for what Paul and the other activists do for the seals, however it is sad to read, as it paints a gorey picture of the true horror of sealing. A good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Hero
I love this book! Paul Watson is a real hero. How incredible brave he is. The only person who does something against the cruel and unhuman seal hunt. Some pages I couldn't read. Everybody in this world should read that book to get another view of life. Paul Watson tells from the beginning of the seal and seal hunt until today and incredible things he has to go through, when every reader can only shake its head about Canadian government. What else on this world must happen that humans learn to appreciate animals and what they suffer for us. When will that change in the minds come? I am sure I won't be alive anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true tale of heroism
This is an amazing book that is riveting in its account of the bloody brutality of the seal slaughter, and the author's incredible bravery and intelligence in trying to end it. Confronting drunken mobs of angry sealers, braving the dangerous ice floes of the gulf of St. Lawrence and "The Front", the baby seals nestled on the ice pans, the sealers crushing their skulls and sometimes skinning them alive while they bleed and scream in terror.

The political and economic underpinnings of the baby seal killing business are explained, as well as the background and history. It's an ugly spot on humanity and on a country that prides itself on being humane.

The author learned early in life about how animals are treated with cold indifference, and the violence one is at risk for when one saves animals from humans. The author's own father beat him cruelly for saving animals, and he learned to be tough and fight back for the creatures of nature who were his friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener!
I feel so foolish after reading this book.I thought that all it would take to end the barbaric and cruel seal "hunts" is join along with millions of others who are against it, let it be known in a letter or an email and wait to see what happens.I guess I could never fathom a good people, a good government that would allow animal cruelty and to allow it as a proud tradition, a heritage, a right.Yet the world has not seen even a inkling of what really happens come March every year.Cameras aren't allowed.Videos aren't allowed to record the cruelty. If by chance cruelty is recorded, it is a fake, a lie, made up.

I NEVER IMAGINED A GOVERNMENT THAT WOULD ALLOW SUCH CRUELTY. I never imagined a government that would defend brutality to animals and to people!I never imagined this country - the country that allows all this - would want a person who defends an innocent animal, because of what he was witnessing, because of the horrible pain he saw year after year after year, because he couldn't sit back and do nothing, a government that would rather see him dead or imprisoned because of it, yes the government! What an eye opener. How any man could take the most gentle creature on the face of the earth and torture it is beyond my imagination. These people have no compassion, not an iota of mercy.IT'S HAPPENING! AND A GOVERNMENT THAT CALLS THEMSELVES A GOOD PEOPLE IS ALLOWING IT AND PRAISING IT!

Paul Watson's title "Seal Wars" is right on. This book is about a war to protect the seals.Mr. Watson will take you year by year into his life as a Sea Shepherd to the harp seals. He has fought valiantly throughout the years to protect the harp seals and he himself has suffered, but he has never given up.The war still rages on today.

These creatures, very gentle and trusting of people, are living their lives on the ice as they were born on this earth until March of every single year. The seals don't expect it, they don't know it, they trust humans, and then a man comes at a baby seal with the bottom of his boot hard to the face then skinned while still alive, its mother can only watch helplessly as it is squealing in pain, or a club to the head before being skinned (40%+ seals are skinned alive!) or a hakapik into another baby, the heartless fisherman dragging it across the ice while it is still alive, the seal crying in pain - it is only a few days old; a ship - a Coast Guard ship at that - who run the little animals down on the ice purposely, out of spite for those who are trying to protect them; baby seals can't swim, or even a bullet to a mother seals head, for one vain and unnecessary thing - fur.

These animals suffer and they suffer for vain. They will continue to suffer until more people become angry and more people get active.Read this book!READ IT AND DO SOMETHING!!DO WHAT YOU CAN!I guarantee if you have a heart in you, you will want to after reading this! There are several causes on the internet you can find to join.Paul Watson's Sea Shepherd is one of them. Not enough people are speaking up and doing something. There's simply not enough people who care. It is discouraging to read, but we should never let discouragement keep us from speaking for those who can't!Read this book and pass it on and DO SOMETHING!

I was deeply touched by one part of the book in which Mr. Watson describes a peaceful visit, yet another campaign to save them; he says "Looking into those huge, dark, innocent eyes reminded me again of why we had to championthese creatures. The seals were indeed the little lambs of God, their vulnerable innocence in such contrast to the raw, mindless cruelty of the ice floes, a cruelty dwarfed only by the merciless, mindful cruelty of man.I loved them every one.And what we love we defend." ... great book!!! fun read, lots of terrific unique BIG pictures....several two page shots....can make a fan out of anybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate James Dean book.
Beautiful picturs, 45-year-old articles, and movie logo's are the highlight of this quentissential James Dean book. By far it is one of the best I have ever read, while it's not really a biography, it tells of Deans childhood, the relation and impact made by the characters Dean played and the legacy he left to us. If there was only one book on Jimmy I could have, this would be it. After all this time this book shows that James dean has not lost his appeal. And I'm pretty sure, Jimmy will be even bigger in 2005 when he receaves the honerary academy award, this book will occupy me until then.

Product Description
"Mike Alewitz's art has given eloquent voice to the aspirations of working people throughout the world. His heroic figures and vibrant colors are powerful weapons in the hands of the oppressed."
--Martin Sheen

This strikingly beautiful volume is the first-ever published collection of the internationally recognized labor, political, and environmental murals of Mike Alewitz.

The most prolific U.S. labor muralist since the 1940s, Alewitz follows the traditions of Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Siqueiros as well as the early painters of the Russian Revolution. With a demonstrated blend of artistic integrity and political commitment, Insurgent Imagescombines grand historical themes with enlivening detail, and illustrates the interplay between personality and event. Alewitz brings to this tradition his own rich sense of irony, humor, and fantasy to illuminate the hidden spaces where connections between the multiracial, multi-gendered workforce of the U.S. and its extended relatives across the planet are to be found.

Insurgent Images contains murals for the Teamsters, the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers, the Communications Workers, United Electrical Workers, the United Farmworkers, as well as the Highlander Folk School and other labor institutions.

Other works respond to dramatic developments such as the 1984 strike of P-9 workers in Austin, Minnesota, the 1991 rebellion in Los Angeles, and the tragedy at Chernobyl. Altogether, this collection is an inspiring artistic reading of our epoch, sometimes poignant and yet full of promise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Call Me Mike
This is a heartfelt, but important book.Mike Farrell discusses human rights concerns openly and clearly and in historical context.I must read for anyone concerned about the future for America.

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably the worst book ever written
This book is terrible.Mike Farrel blabs on about nothing important and his thoughts are random and unorganized. There is no structure to the book and nothing to take from it.The book reads like a kid in high school wrote it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A principled, soft-spoken good guy.We need more citizens like him
Although the trajectory of Mike Farrell's life might not be the stuff of timeless autobiography, it's interesting, educational, and primed me for hearing him at a speaker's event in the near future. There's some actor's insight here, but he doesn't dwell on that part of his life (M*A*S*H for him was a chance ride into lifelong celebrity). His family life is the typical married young and then had kids, "We weren't on the same page" divorce, and successful remarriage with children becoming high achievers. And his world travels to observe and testify of various wars and other political and social disasters turns out to be mostly by referral and invitation, not self-appointment.I can't say I disagree with him about anything.Mike Farrell has come far, he appreciates what he's been given, and earned, and his autobiography is a worthwhile pass-along book.

5-0 out of 5 stars NIce Book, I enjoyed it.
I am a conservative, over 20 years served, active duty US Marine, currently deployed to Baghdad Iraq.I am guessing some readers would wonder why I read the book. I know Mr Farrell is a little to the left, so what. I have enjoyed hearing his opinions on various political shows over the years so that I can hear what the left has to say.He has always been polite and respectful to all opinions, so I gave it a shot.I was not dissapointed, he tells a great story of how he became who he is, to include his time in the US Marines.I almost laugh at the thought of him serving, but I believe from reading this book Mr Farrell loves his country and is a patriot, just with differing opinions from my own and I salute his service to our country. You will read some about MASH, his childhood and how he became a activist.Be warned, he is harsh to conservatives, which I did not agree with, but I respect his right to speak out, and speak out he does.Maybe a little too much conservatie bashing, he could have got his point across with less, but overall a good read, just have a open mind, and if you are looking for a book only about MASH, this is not it.Semper Fi Mr Farrell, I enjoyed your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational is a really great word to describe this book
This personal account of the life of a personality known to millions exceeded my expectations.Although an autobiography, it goes beyond the typical remembrances of a life lived outside of and in the spotlight, pushing past the usual, and manages to inspire, and to make you think.
Mike Farrell's integrity and commitment to humanity, to making the world a better place, are not just conveyed throughout the chapters of this book in his own words, but have been demonstrated in perpetuity by his selfless actions on behalf of mankind. This book is missing an important word in the subtitle- It should have been called "Just Call Me Mike- The Journey From Actor to Activist to TEACHER."An educator, he is indeed.

3-0 out of 5 stars great writing, poor audio
This book consists of 10 meditations from different scenes of the Gospels. There is also an accompanying audio CD, performed by actor Martin Sheen and others, that provides the content of the book as guided meditations for prayer.

The meditations are reflections using a combination of Ignatian-style "entering the stories" meditation with Jewish midrash. The words are laid out on the page like poetry, so that they can be read slowly, poetically, in bite-size pieces, allowing the reader to savor the imagery. The writing and imagery itself is wonderful.

The accompanying CD, unfortunately, is not.First, the accompanying violin music is often quite jarringly shrill in tone when being listened to in a quiet and contemplative mood.Second, although Martin Sheen acts the scenes well, expressing all the emotions that are appropriate, the meditations are read FAR, FAR, FAR too quickly! There is simply no time at all to develop the word pictures in the mind because the meditations are practically speed-read.The poetic structure of these meditations are utterly dashed as they are read like pure prose at breakneck speed.

The audio effect is so frustrating as to be a real negative treatment of the book and, sadly, must be ignored to get the real benefit of these meditations. As one of the few books of Christian-specific guided meditation with scripture, I had great hopes for this work.I hope in the future, the CD is re-recorded by someone who is more familiar with presenting audio guided meditations. ... Product Description
John Dear, SJ, has been arrested more than 75 times. He has spent more than a year of his life in jail. He has been mocked by armed U.S. soldiers standing outside the doors to his New Mexico parish. All this because he so fervently believes in peace.

Dear's unflappable persistence in speaking and acting on behalf of peace stems from his life-changing decision in college to leave behind his frat-boy, party-all-night lifestyle and instead become a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. In turn, that decision has, over many years, led him to live out the Beatitudes of the nonviolent Jesus in every dimension of his life rather than simply quote them when convenient from time to time.

A Persistent Peace, John Dear's autobiography, invites readers to follow the decades-long journey and spiritual growth of this nationally known peace activist, and to witness his bold, decisive, often unpopular actions before government officials, military higher-ups, and even hostile representatives of the Church. With heroes such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela, it should come as no surprise that John's activism has taken him to many places including war zones all over the world.

From his conversion to Christianity, to his calling to become a Jesuit, to the extreme dangers and delights of a life dedicated to truly living out the radical, forgiving love of Jesus, Dear's incredible story will touch anyone who believes in the power of peace. Perhaps most important of all, readers will come to understand through John that the most important disarmament of all is the one that happens inside each heart when we finally let go of our own self-righteousness, resentment, and anger. ... I first heard about John Dear while working within a group to develop a 2010 Seasons for Nonviolence program.I urged that we invite him to come to our town, but it didn't work out.I feel closer to the work that he has accomplished through reading this autobiography and will still strive to meet him personally someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Journey of Peacein John Dear's A Persistent Peace
The most important gift John Dear gives the reader is a candid revelation of his spiritual journey. A willingness to share his interior struggles when confronted with unflagging opposition from both superiors and hawks identifies him with the common of mortal. But John Dear, unlike most, has taken the Gospel message literally. Through his life witness he provides the reader with a glimpse of what following the Gospel message should look like in our violent times.Vivid images and compact text elicit both laughter and breathless gasps.

This book is a compelling read to the 10th power!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring

As this book points out, he has been involved in various peace movements since the Reagan-supported supression of uprisings in Central America. Probably not a book for admirers of ex-VP Dick Cheney, but as a peacenik, I personally loved it! Beyond that, John Dear is obviously a serious follower of Jesus' teachings and the book is full of solid Christian insight. Bottom line: John Dear believes with all his heart that to follow Jesus requires one to work for peace. To this end he has devoted his life, despite continuing uphill struggles with authorities. ...
