Product Description
In her bestselling memoir, now in paperback, Brooke Shields shares with the world her deeply personal experience with postpartum depression

When Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter to the world, her joyful expectations were quickly followed by something unexpected -- a crippling depression. In what is sure to strike a chord with the millions of women who suffer from depression after childbirth, Brooke Shields shares how she, too, battled a condition that is widely misunderstood, despite the fact that it affects many new mothers. She discusses the illness in the context of her life, including her struggle to get pregnant, the high expectations she had for herself and that others placed on her as a new mom, and the role of her husband, friends, and family as she struggled to attain her maternal footing in the midst of a disabling depression.

Ultimately, Brooke shares how she found a way out through talk therapy, medication, and time. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I couldn't even finish this book. Terribly written and did not hold my interest in the slightest. Read "It Sucked and then I cried" by Heather Armstrong for a "real" look at postpartum depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars First hand account of postpartum depression
Bravo to Brooke Shields for sharing her personal experience on the subject of postpartum depression! She doesn't hold anything back, but gives us an inside look into what postpartum depression is really like.I admire her for being so brave!

1-0 out of 5 stars I'll pass
Here we go again with Brooke Shields, another media hound looking for attention after she used Michael Jackson for that and realized even going out with him would not help her acting career.Anyway, I do believe women suffer for PPD and maybe some anti-depressants temporarily work for them. However, I think many of Brooke's issues were related to her advanced maternal age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Information
This book contains a really accurate and detailed account of what it is like being a new mom and experiencing post partum depression. It's a great read for anyone who is interested in the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both informative and interesting.
As someone who might possibly have actual children in his future and not just the furry variety, it seemed to me that it might be a good idea to learn about this very real and, as far as I'm concerned, horribly misunderstood issue. Having read up on Brooke over the years and knowing about her struggle with PPD I decided to read her account of it. The audio CD version is narrated by Brooke herself. I'm often skeptical about authors attempting to narrate their own works since some just do not have the voice for it. Douglas Adams and Stephen King, while their voices are in no way annoying to me, just don't do their own works justice as far as I'm concerned. That's not the case with Brooke Shields. Not only do her feelings of fear, guilt, despair and the like come through in her narration, but she just has a very pleasant voice to listen to. One thing I liked about this book is that while her main focus was of course on the negative emotions she was experiencing and the frightening visions she had of harm coming to her daughter, the story has just enough humor throughout that I couldn't put it down for long. I'm glad I took the time to read Brooke's account. It sometimes amazes me that a person who goes through something as traumatic and frightening could want to have another child, if only because the fear of falling back into depression is very real. And now she has not one but two daughters. Needless to say I found this book both interesting and informative, not the least because Brooke herself narrated it. She's got a very pleasant voice for narration as I said. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it
My 4 year old daughter loves this book. She has her Daddy read it to her every night. She likes it when he replaces the names in the book for her name, her baby sister's name and the dogs name. I bought it for her when I was pregnant and she loved talking about the younger sister in the book and thinking about what things she will do with her younger sister. I also liked that it was a day where the Dad did everything with the girls because I had quite a few of those when the baby was first born so my daughter enjoyed reading about a day where a Daddy could do all the things mommy usually does while mommy has a day to rest. I think it is a cute book. Not sure why other reviews are so negative. I even bought a few for gifts for my friends who have 2nd babies on the way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book ever...
It could have been written by anyone. If Brooke Shield's was not the author, this book would not sell. However, reading to your children is always important... even if the story isn't that great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art work - pretty, pretty
Reviewed by Sophia McElroy (age 6.5) for Reader Views (8/09)

I really like the artwork; it's very pretty. My favorite picture is the sisters eating pancakes shaped like animals! The dog park is another favorite picture. I liked the pages with the hopscotch that their Dad drew with sidewalk chalk.

This is a story about two sisters and their Dad. They had a fun day doing lots of stuff with him. I thought it seemed fun when they got ice cream after the visiting the dog park and had a tea party with Dad. The tickle monster was really funny; Daddy sometimes is the tickle monster too! I think it would be fun to have a picnic at night in our backyard like they did in the story in "It's the Best Day Ever, Dad!" by Brooke Shields.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first
I was a little disappointed. We LOVED welcome to your world, the story line the pictures, everything was great. With this book the pictures again were fantastic, but we didn't feel there was a true story line and it talked a lot about the dog. It's a tough call, my daughters love looking at the beautiful pictures, but the story line wasn't very interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's the Best Day Ever, Dad review
While this book sounded like a great read with a good message, it was not.I had bought it for a gift and quickly decided it would be a huge disappointment. The content surely took about 3 minutes to write however the illustrations were good....although not enough reason alone to purchase the book. Too bad all the way around. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect baby gift for big sister
This is a cute book and it a great gift for the big sister when a baby sister comes home.

5-0 out of 5 stars very cute
Very cute book, neat pictures and definitely makes my daughters want to read and read again. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the older sister
I bought this book 2 months before i was due with my second child.I wanted to kinda prepare my daughter for a little one in the house.I think she totally got it with this book. She still loves the book now that her sister is here. I will hear her mumbling, "I love pink"That's a quote from the book.

Would definitely recommend this book. The illustrations were really good and colorful!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Essentially it describes all the fun things Big Sister has planned for the new addition to the family. That premise might seem like that this book is narrowly targeted for a particular audience, but our 2 and a half year-old son (who is NOT expecting a sibling any time soon) absolutely loves this book. He wants to read it for nighttime reading almost every day. And just the other day, he wanted to catch snowflakes on his tongue, just like the sisters in the book.

What really brings the book together are the illustrations. The fun the sisters are having is perfectly captured on each page.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, but Rhythmically Challenged
Reviewed by Christina Wantz Fixemer
on 09/21/2008

This picture book is full of sweet sentiment and darling illustrations. It isn't a story so much as a promise of things to come between sisters. The excitement of having a new baby in the house is a big deal to older siblings, and this shines through.

As a read-aloud book, however, it is difficult to get into a decent rhythm. The prose is laid out to look as though it is rhythmic, so, while reading to my own daughter, I kept feeling off kilter. This may seem like a nitpicky thing to say, but try reading it aloud, and the difficulty will make sense. Brooke Shields is, without a doubt, an intelligent and soulful person, but that doesn't always translate into a gift for writing. The big sister's lines are full of heart but awkwardly written. Sometimes it rhymes, then it doesn't. This contributes to the stumbling I feel when I read this one aloud.

Awkward rhythm aside, this is a sweet book that would be nice for girls who are soon-to-be big sisters (or who already are!).

Note: My daughter became a big sister to a little brother last fall, but she still found this book delightful and relevant. But don't ask her what "relevant" means. ;-) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Empty message and hype
I read this when it first came out.The theme of the book is to save yourself for marriage and preserve your virginity for oh so long.IMO this is no guarantee of successfully obtaining or retaining a viable mate.Women who abstain for sex for too long outside of nuns are usually very cranky and unhappy.Even Brooke went on to say how she wished she had not waited so long in having sex for the first time many years after this book in effect contradicting herself. The whole sex/virginity thing is overrated anyway. This is nothing more than empty hype of saving yourself for marriage.

3-0 out of 5 stars The real "Last American Virgin" holds forth
Brooke Shields and I are the same age. I read this book when it came out, when Brooke and I were both twenty, but unlike Brooke, I was not studying at Princeton. I was graduating from a secretarial school and getting my first job. Therefore, a lot of the advice about the horrors of dorm life went right over my working-class head.

She does have some good things to say and some good advice to give. It's just that the idea of a twenty-year-old gracing us with the wisdom of her accumulated years is a bit of a scream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. With such catchy phrases as 'Worry is the sleep thief" and "I'd rather be overweight than smoke", who wouldn't want to read this?Actually, it made Brooke Shields look almost like a down to earth person while at the same timereminding us that one should never re-wear any of those styles from the80's. I wonder if Brooke still uses the same beauty rituals now as she didthen- ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WHy is this book worth so much?
The facts:
1. A photogenic baby is pushed into modeling by her controlling, obsessed mother.
2. She turns into a lovely child who is a regular child model
3. When she turns 12, she morphs into a teen who can look older than her years and so, based on her looks, she becomes the hot model of the moment.
4. Great photographers get some great photos of her, but some of them toe the line between sexiness and child porn. Is is "art" or "porn" when a child poses topless in a bathtub, looking seductively at the camera? Is it cute or borderline dangerous to have a young girl play a child prostiture, potentially encouraging the fantasies of pedophiles? These are some of the real and controversial issues surrounding the career of Ms. Shields.
5. But she never became (yet) a world class actress. She was simply gorgeous.
And this is enough to form an obsession...and boost up the price of this book? Guess so. People can be so strange.
Perhaps it is no surprise that her latest book, "DOwn Came the Rain" focuses on her bout with postpartum depression after her child, Rowan, was born. Must be pretty strange to have a daughter of your own and then remember how odd your OWN childhood was....or was she ever allowed to be a normal child? Can't remember a time when she didn't seem to be working, working, working...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brooke Book 1982 Version
I bought The Brooke Book 1982 version from Amazon used.I have to say, it's a great book. It's mostly pictures, though.I recommend it to any Brooke Shields fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Sought After Collectible
The Brooke Book is one of the most popular Brooke Shields memorabilia items. I own one myself. But mine is the (I suppose you could call it the "revised" edition) second edition book. On my edition there is a headshot photo of brooke from around the early 1980's. The 1978 Edition shows her sitting on a floor. The book covers Brooke's home and professional life, from her birth to around 1978. You might think the price is too high for this book, but I have seen them sell for much higher on auction, and I've seen most bookstores sell them for a flat $500.00

4-0 out of 5 stars Brooke is Delectable
A charming book with a collection of photo's of the young Brooke Shields (the book was published in 1978, just after filming Pretty Baby) looking delightful. Mostly black and white photo's but also some colour and with text by Brooke. Rather cutsey but the pictures are good (good photographers) and there's enough of Brooke showing in the photos to satisfy most tastes.

Charming and innocent with a little suggestiveness thrown in to titillate. ... Read more

Product Description
This dialogue about depression and culture constitutes Canadian author Eldon Garnet's "confessions" as a failed cultural critic who, after writing all his life, is faced once again with the desire. Awakened from semiretirement by a magazine commission on Brooke Shields, an icon of virginal perfection, Garnet has his narrator weave a dark tale of professionalism, the abyss of failure that remains when the fifteen minutes of fame have long since dried up. The "subject" of the narrative, Brooke Shields, becomes an untouchable, idealized figure in a world of personalities and faces. It is through the very absence and untouchability of this fetishized celebrity icon that Garnet describes the vicissitudes of his narrator's decline. Sinister, comical, and profound, Garnet's novel is a work of cultural politics and radical honesty. ... Read more
