Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: A Letter from Sarah Silverman

Dear Reader:

My name is Sarah Silverman.I was once primarily known for saying the word "poop" and getting paid above market rates for it.But those days are over, because I am now going to be known for having written a book. Why did I write a book, you might wonder?Because it just seemed like the right time to be getting into the publishing industry.

I'm kidding.Publishing is rotting like an abandoned possum carcass on the shoulder of I-95.I know that for a fact, because shortly after my book deal was announced, I kept hearing people lament the imminent demise of literature. These days there is only one reason to write a book: to be taken seriously. And that is exactly what is about to happen to me.I'm an author now!Like Ernest Hemingway and Fyodor Dostoevsky!

When I was asked to provide text for an author page, I decided to approach it in a scholarly manner, because that's what authors do.I looked to other author pages for inspiration, and I learned so much. For example, while Hemingway and Dostoevsky do not have their own author pages on Amazon.com, Paris Hilton does. And so does former teenage porn star and multi-tasking fellatrix, Traci Lords.Hemingway and Dostoevsky might be wondering, quite literally, "Whom do I have to blow to get my own author page?"If someone had a cruel sense of humor, they might respond to Hemingway, "How about your head off?Oh wait – you already DID that!"But such a remark would be in bad taste, and as a serious author, I'm above all that.

I also learned that Paris' dog, Tinkerbell Hilton, has her own book too.I read a few pages and found the prose to be overwrought, but you can imagine that, being a dog, she'd be coming from a place of needing to prove something.By the way, here's a quote from a review of Paris' book that I found on her Amazon.com author page:

"Heiress, socialite, model, actress, singer and media darling Hilton loves her life, knows how to get what she wants and matter-of-factly explains how anyone can be a glamorous, fun-loving, tiara-wearing heiress just like her… [Paris’] advice to 'channel your own inner heiress, create your own image, and project an extreme sense of confidence' is an empowering message for young women."

This was profoundly inspiring to me.It made me realize: if young women can read Hilton's book and become heiresses, they can likewise read my book and become anxiety-ridden bedwetters. And amidst this generation of disposability that favors the digital over the physical, shopping online rather than in stores (oops, this is awkward!), and reading from LCD screens rather than from print on paper, it's nice to know that I will have left a permanent stain by which future generations shall know of my existence. So read The Bedwetter, if not for me, then for the children.

3-0 out of 5 stars funny so far.
i love sarah silverman. she's awesome, hot, hilarious, and jewish. basically she's all of the things i would like to personally be. i'm only on the first chapter, as grad school requires most of my time with reading. however, what i've read so far is pretty funny. yay! good buy. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny book, sad book, revealing book all in one.
I am a fan of Sarah Silverman's movie and television work and I can honestly say I enjoyed this book. I was afraid to purchase it at first because I find her standup act stupid.

As the title would suggest, this is the story of a woman who wet her bed well into her mid teens and the emotional trauma and scars this caused her. The most telling incident in the book is Sarah helping her mother hide diapers in the bottom of her sleeping bag for an overnight camping trip one month away from her thirteenth birthday. She very convincingly describes a wave of depression washing over her the following day, and how this caused an adulthood of drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, and acting out in public for attention. In that way she's like many big name performers, but not many actresses have her comedy chops.

This book seeks to explain why Sarah works so hard to shock her audience, seeks to tell the story of her very painful childhood, to explain away some of what have been perceived as the cruelest moments in her onstage career, and above all to be funny. I think it succeeds on all counts, and I'm giving it 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nurture your inner moron
First off, this book is really funny, I laughed out loud all over the place. She's lucky to have a funny father who supported her and financed her road to comedy. Almost nobody gets these advantages. Not a very inspirational story, unless you were a bed wetter into high school or struggle with depression. Somewhat interesting details on her experiences with comics 20 years ago in NYC. I learned other things about her too, she is aware that her tv show was retarded. She's really funny sometimes, but some things she finds funny are just perfect for her target audience: 12-14 year-old boys and stoners. She mentions she's Jewish so much, and uses it as an excuse so frequently, that I get the impression this book would be about 67-pages long if she wasn't Jewish (that would be roughly 43% of the content. I got this quick read from the library, so no financial loss. I enjoyed the funny parts, rolled my eyes at the dumb parts, but overall found this an entertaining look at a person's life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not funny as I thought
I must admit that I did not know much of Silverman's comedy work, but somehow I got redirected into this page, read the passage inserted, and I thought (hoped) that the whole book would be as funny. No way. This thing got boooring quite fast. Before midway thru the book, I was already sorry I bought it.
I have absolutely no problem with foul language or with crude jokes, so that was not the issue. The issue is, they were just not funny.
So, if this book was not intended to be funny, but rather to be an inspirational (or at least, interesting) telling of her life, then it also failed at that. Her life story is just not that interesting to begin with.
So what does the author do in her attempt to be funny and/or interesting to fill this whole book? She will tell you, every chance she gets, that she is jewish. Again, nothing wrong with it, but, where is the humor in that?
I regret buying this book, and regret the time spent reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars funny, in a urine-tinged way
Sarah Silverman is funny and so is this book. She is self-deprecating and honest about several amusing topics, and she handles sensitive topics with a tenderness you might not expect. It reads quickly and never bogs down.I am befuddled by her amusement with her co-workers exhibitionism - one always hopes clever satirists aspire to greater things than penis displays and farting.Perhaps boredom, drugs and alcohol bring everyone to the lowest common denominator. This is a good light read for a trip/vacation or while "watching" your children play soccer..... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! But wait, there's more...
Those familiar with Sarah Silverman's comedy know that it doesn't matter who you are, you will be made fun of. Even if you are Sarah Silverman.

"The Bedwetter" turns her comedic observations toward herself and her family. The result is hilarious, sometimes quite revealing, but always heartfelt and poignant.

Judging by how well she immerses herself in her role on "The Sarah Silverman Program", I've always wondered if she would be a hard person to get to know. With people that define themselves by being funny, it seems difficult to know when they're joking or serious in actual life. I wondered if this book would have the same ambiguity. But Sarah's writing is sharp, witty, and honest. Though her wit is sometimes dry, it is easy to tell when she is being honest, or when she's telling the truth through a joke, which is what comedians are better at than anyone.

"The Bedwetter" is told in short episodes on a fairly linear timeline. The first part of the book is largely about her family and her childhood growing up in New Hampshire. She admits to one of the most embarrassing problems a child can have - bedwetting, as you can guess by the title. And it wasn't something that just happened when she was a little kid. She had an undersized bladder until she was sixteen, causing her to wet the bed in the middle of the night. As can be imagined, this lead to much torment as a child, and eventually in her teens, depression. How many celebrities would admit to childhood bedwetting, much less write about how it shaped them as a person?

Sarah also talks about starting out doing stand up at the NYC comedy clubs, the comics she befriended, her short stint at SNL, the genesis of the `Sarah Silverman Program', the controversies surrounding certain jokes on `SSP', her bad Emmy dress, arguments with the editors about the book, arguments with producers and her show, and being a Jew. She also shares her values and mantras, which were truly revealing and interesting. She readily admits her mistakes, but also staunchly defends herself where she believes she's right.

Overall I felt that this book was like having a great, one-way conversation with one of my favorite entertainers. Instead of intense scene-building or melodrama, Silverman offers short, compact chapters that stay on topic. If I had any complaint about this book, it would be that sometimes I wanted to hear a few more details about a certain scene or a certain person, but I can only suppose Sarah felt she gave the reader what they needed.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book because it's read by Ms. Silverman herself, and I believe the experience was richer because of it. Her tone is conversational, but with emphasis in all the right spots. Her impressions of her father's voice messages were absolutely hilarious. I think reading the book would have been just as fun, but listening to Sarah tell her own story was a real treat.

Highly recommended for fans of Sarah Silverman. Anyone else probably wouldn't care.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great CD for your commute
Remarkably well written and very funny memoir read by the author.I might even listen to it more than once.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than Funny Bones
I like Sarah Silverman, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. I listened to "Bedwetter," because I thought it would be funny. It is, but it's a whole lot more.
It's Silverman's memoir and though she's funny, she's also poignant and intelligent. She begins the book with funny. She wrote her own foreword. She also wrote a midword. She then begins the book in earnest with her childhood in New Hampshire. The title though funny is also true and the trauma she goes through during her formative years until she's sixteen is heartbreaking. She also catalogs her mental health (depression) and its treatment, which is not exactly beautiful. She tells us how she became a vegetarian.
I adored the sketches of her family and friends. Silverman makes humorous portraits of her family with genuine love and genuine truth. I love her friend Carrie and the idea of "Make it a treat." It's a great philosophy of life.
Silverman took me through her college and comedy club years as well as her short-lived stint on SNL. She tells of her controversies and her campaigning for Obama. Finally, she recounts the making of her own television show on Comedy Central.
I loved listening to her. She is a wonderful comedian, which means she's a wonderful actor. (Hey, casting people -- give her more jobs. She's good.)
If you want to know what it is like to be a woman in stand-up, listen to this book. It's amusing and insightful.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of an autobiography with some humor
This is less of a comedy cd and more of an autobiography by a funny person.

Some parts are even sad.Like when she recounts how a 5 year old sarah tried to make a joke about her dead brother.

If you are interested in learning the life story of sarah silverman this would be an amazing listen, if you just want her to make you laugh it's just ok.

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible book
For fans of sarah silverman this c.d is a must have, you will learn what sarah has gone through growing up, its funny and sad in places, definatly a must have, you can listen to sarah read from her book, this girl has talent. ... Read more
