5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, well acted. Serling was a genius.
This collection (the first of four) radio dramas, based on scripts by the late master of the strange, Rod Serling, presents four explorations of the dimension known as "The Twilight Zone".Narrated by Stacy Keach, who gives a certain eerie presentation as the narrator (though not in the same league as Mr. Serling, still eerie). The four stories presented are well acted, by James Keach, Jane Seymour, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Tim Kazurinsky. The "commercials" are kept to a minimum, which is good.Still, a fine collection (I look forward to listening to collections 2-4.) [Refers to cassette edition, bought also cd edition.]I contacted the producers of the series, and unfortunately, there is no print equivalent (as the scripts are owned by the Serling estate, which, one day, will [hopefully] publish them).Serling was a master and a genius.

3-0 out of 5 stars "The Ads Kill It"
The stories are done well enough but the frequent, repetative commercials just kill the experience of the audio tapes.I turely resented having to sit through them and, as much as I love the Twilight Zione, I will not buy any more from this series beause of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste
When word got out that "The Twilight Zone" would make its move to radio with Stacy Keach filling in for Rod Serling as
host, the response was generally on the order of, 'Uh,
how can you go from TV back to radio? And why
Twilight Zone to make the regression?' Well, the producers
of the series obviously saw no problem with it...they
pay CBS their fees, get the product on the shelves,
and collect the cash from the sales.

This is, unfortunately, another example of an

over-commercialised, slapdash attempt to revive
and sequelize a classic masterwork....sort of like
taking Shakespeare and cutting out all the middle-English
so everyone on the planet can understand it in "plain"
English. Bad example...and call me a mindless dolt
for using it. But that's exactly what's happening
with these Twilight Zone radio dramas.

The producers hooked Dennis Etchison, an excellent
writer, to expand and water-down the great old stories
of Rod Serling (and yes, the stories of Richard Matheson,
Chuck Beaumont, and other writers are going to be
adapted for radio as well, sans a few segments
that don't work well on radio including Matheson's
near-silent "The Invaders" and Serling's highly visual
"Eye of the Beholder"). Sadly, it is all too apparent
that Etchison knows, deep down, that the work of
the old writers can't be topped. For a show like
"The Twilight Zone", whose domain was almost like
a world parallel to our own, with the entire universe
as its breeding ground,
to take its stories and bring them back to the mundane and the reality-grounded
as radio programs is pointless. These first two sets
really come off as no more than bland recitations of
old stories that fans know inside and out from the
original TV versions.

The actors for the first series of eight dramas
include Jim Caviezel, Lou Diamond Phillips, Tim
Kazurinsky, Jane Seymour, James Keach, Blair Underwood,
Kim Fields, Chris MacDonald, and Ed Begley Jr.
Of these, only Jane Seymour does a credible job
as star of Serling's episode "The Lateness of the Hour"
(which originally starred the late Inger Stevens).
Tim Kazurinsky and Lou Diamond Phillips do earn
their paychecks with fairly humorous performances
in episodes "Mr. Dingle the Strong" (originally
starring Burgess Meredith) and "A Kind of Stopwatch",
respectively. The rest of the actors quite obviously
have no clue as to what they were doing, reciting
all their lines as if read directly from a cue card
(which in fact is probably what they did!)

In the role of ersatz-Rod Serling, the narrator,
Stacy Keach pretty much mails in his performance.
His readings of the intro/closings are but
lacking the gripping sincerity and meaning that
Rod always imparted to each and every narration.

Further hampering the dramas is the inclusion
of sponsor commercials, which pop up several
times. The CD versions are all one continuous
42-minute track with no option of fast-forwarding
through the commercials unless done manually.

In short, this new radio series does not yet offer
anything that the original series didn't. The
days of good ol' radio are gone, never to return.
But there are many more of these dramas still yet to
be released. Collections 3 and 4 have already
been released and do offer some nice sound
effects and a fabulous performance by Morgan
Brittany in episode "The Passersby". So perhaps
there's hope. Brittany is the first actor who
appeared in the TV series, to star in these dramas,
and more celebrities are reportedly going to
appear in future installments. Stay tuned...but
keep the volume on low until the producers come
full circle and prove their worthiness to carry
Rod Serling's gauntlet.

4-0 out of 5 stars You have to give these guys an "E" for effort!
Okay, So I was all geared to be disappointed with this whole package. And, unfortunately, the producers picked the weakest of the four stories to begin the set. The actor in "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" sounds like he just walked out of some ivy league acting school and not like a hardened pioneer who has been wandering through the desert for months on end.

The next story, "The Lateness of the Hour," is ruined by a too-long explanation of the "daughter" being a robot at the end. Does it take that much explanation for today's "dumbed-down" society? I hope not.

But the next two shows blew me out of the water. Lou Diamond Phillips is superb in "A Kind of Stopwatch." His over-the-top performance is one of the greatest I've ever heard in any radio drama. Then "Mr. Dingle, the Strong" followed and it was wonderful, too.

Another plus is the original Twilight Zone soundtrack music which is used and other pains that are taken to maintain the flavor of the original classic TV series. I would suggest buying one collection and seeing if you like it before buying the second.

This is not everyone's cup of tea, but the people who put these dramas together did the best they could and it's well worth a listen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars step back in time to revisit the chills you experienced watching the original versions
Enjoyed Collection 1 of THE TWILIGHT ZONE RADIO DRAMAS,
hosted by Stacy Keach . . . it contained four stories
that were performed by such actors as Jim Caviezel, Jane Seymour,
James Keach, Lou Diamond Phillips and Tim Kazurinsky.

If you were a fan of the TV show, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, you'll
want to listen to this program . . . doing so will enable you
to step back in time to revisit the chills you experienced
when you watched Rod Sterling hosting the original version.

You'll also receive an introduction to what it was like listening
to the radio for your entertainment . . . folks actually did
that at one time . . . or so I've been told.

Though some of the stories were better than others, none
left me disappointed . . . they left me seeking Collection
2 of these dramas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twilight Radio Drama
This is a gift and ithasn't been opened it yet.All looks great just as promised.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Versions of Great Stories
I just added these radio dramas to my collection. When I purchased them I thought they were olde time radio dramas and that the TV show had been made from them. Not so.These are modern radio versions made from the scripts of the old TV show. And, in many ways, I like them better than the TV versions.I have every intention of buying all of them I can get.My only criticism is that I get tired of hearing Stacy Keach's advertisement for the website at the end of each program.Small annoyance.I highly recomment them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Into The Twilight Zone...Anywhere !
These are some of the original T.Z. episodes re-written especially for 'radio'.
Now available on CD, these are the first ten episodes of the radio series on ten discs. The stories are in no particular order according to the T.V. show, but does include 'The Lonely', the first televised episode. The other stories include 'Night of the Meek', 'A Kind of Stopwatch', 'The Lateness of the Hour', 'The Thirty-Fathom Grave','The Man in the Bottle','The After Hours', 'Mr.Dingle The Strong', 'A Stop At Willoughby' and 'Of Late I think of Cliffordville'.
They do vary in (content)quality, from stories like 'Night of the Meek'...whilst very professional and well executed, is also very 'workmanlike' and lacking the atmosphere of the original. However, 'The After Hours' works magnificently portraying a truly spooky atmosphere which is enhanced by these pin-sharp recordings.
Stacy Keach steps into Rod's wingtip brogues as the host 'in-and-out' of the stories and he is an excellent choice. Each episode has a guest star and I for one was pleasantly shocked by how good Lou Diamond Phillips is, as he crops up a few times in the entire series.
All in all, a very good first volume. A good choice of stories, something quite literally for everyone (horror, suspense, comedy and sci-fi stories) with top notch production values.
I will certainly be buying Volume 2 & 3 as I have enjoyed this one so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great new twist on a classic!!
These radio dramas are so cool!!I recieved a free sample cd from the creators and really loved what I heard. I for sure wanted to own all of them for my long commute. As the reviewer earlier said..the sample cd I recieved had "commercials". I knew I would not pay for advertising so I called the company to ask if the ones I would purchase would be add free. They informed me that the newer 10 cd volumes did not have commercials. Well I just recieved the 1st three 10 cd volumes from Amazon this week and can vouch for the no commercials fact. From what they said the smaller pack versions have commercials.
These guys did a stellar job of these radio dramas! They had to change a few things here and there to fit the radio format..and I do not mind any of the subtle changes. The sound effects and the atmosphere they create is pure magic...I have gotten lost in each one I've heard. I have been a TZ fan since childhood (I'm 39) and I can honestly say these are very very well done imo. I think Rod Serling would be proud!! Look forward to getting the rest of them in the near future. If you like TZ I think you will love these. ... Read more

Product Description
Two pregnant teenagersone in privileged Newport, Rhode Island, one in a poor, remote Irish villagehave nothing in common except for the stunning fact that both are virgins. Private detective and former nun Anne Fitzgerald is called by the Archdiocese of Boston to investigate and to watch over the girls as they come to term. But Anne hasnt been told the secret prophecy of the Virgin of Fatima known only to the Pope: one of these girls will give birth to the Messiah while the other will bear the child of Satan. Caught between the certainty of science and the possibility of a miracle, Anne finds herself at the center of a terrifying battle on which the fate of humanity hangs. James Pattersons most recent bestseller, Pop Goes the Weasel (October 1999), had a first printing of one million copies and was a Globe and Mail bestseller. When the Wind Blows (1998), a nonAlex Cross novel, shot straight to #1 in paperback (1999). Cradle and All is an entirely reimagined version of a 1980 Patterson novel, Virgin, long out of print. Cradle and All has been chosen as a Main Selection of the Literary Guild. Praise for James Patterson: James Patterson knows how to sell thrills and suspense in clean, unwavering prose. ~ PeopleAmazon.com Review
James Patterson's Cradle and All pits the intensity of faith against the certainties of science within an arena of Millennial tensions. A reworking of his 1980 apocalyptic thriller Virgin, this remodeled version boasts a genuinely unnerving premise, amplified with Patterson's fast-paced, uncluttered prose.

In the midst of a series of unexplained plagues and famines, two teenage girls are heavily pregnant, despite being virgins. According to the sacred prophecies of Fatima, one will bear the child of Christ and the other, the spawn of Satan. Both Anne Fitzgerald, a former nun turned private detective, and the Vatican's Father Rosetti are sent to investigate. But which girl carries which child? The possibility of a miracle will be tainted with great suffering before the awful, unexpected truth is revealed. As the action moves speedily from the hallowed halls of the Vatican to the media frenzy of America to the small-town hysteria of Ireland, Patterson divines considerable suspense from the novel's central premise, tackling issues of faith with admirable aplomb:

"All over the world, after all the years of difficulty, decades of diminishing spirituality, so many people still believed.... Everywhere, people talked of the Apocalypse, perhaps the end of the world. Which explained why so many people were suddenly going to church."

A relentless pace culminating in a superbly twisted ending won't disappoint Patterson's faithful followers, and may even convert some new members. --Danny Graydon ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful!
Hated it!Truly one of the most painful novels I have ever read, and I love James Patterson's work. Read other 1-star reviews - the Readers nailed it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject
I have to admit I do not usually read James Patterson, but the back cover yelled at me to read the rest - the whole supernatural devil re-born thing, we all seem to be so interested in.
Anyhow, I degress. I enjoyed every word of this book, and I could not put the book down once I started - really!! Even while I was cooking I had it open next to me, sneaking in a word or two here and there. I don't really know what it was that drew me into the book so thoroughly, because I did not find it suspenseful, and neither the romance - it must have been the whole devil and evil demon thing.
I enjoyed his descriptions of Ireland - post EU.
I was so thoroughly shocked when it was the girl you would expect the least to have given birth to the demon child and I loved the end - it could so easily be the opening to a follow-up novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars An ok read
This is not my favorite James Patterson book.Did not think it was one of his best efforts.

you can read all the OTHER reviews that give full details of everything they hated about this book, im just writing to inform you that the book was great. if your offended easily by original thoughts about the christian religion then NO this book isnt for you. if your looking for a different kind of james patterson suspense that crosses religious ideas and plays on social taboos this book is for you! Enjoy it for what it is, AWESOME

1-0 out of 5 stars Neat premise, but terrible execution, plot, and ending!
The only writer who should get any acclaims on this book is the one who wrote the jacket copy! It made me interested enough to read it (well, listen to the audio version anyway). There were so many plot holes and conflicting details. And it was creepy, rather then mysterious. Do not read... pick another Patterson book, ANY other! ... Read more

Product Description

"Stacy Gnall's brilliant debut collection, Heart First into the Forest, explores those timeless yet inexplicable mysteries of worldly (and other-worldly) transformations we know from fable and fairy tale. With her exquisite lyric delicacy, Stacy Gnall weaves a candid, luminous perspective that reveals a forest whose intricate darkness can be lit, of course, only by the heart."—David St. John

This debut collection wanders into the dark, enchanted territory of childhood fables. Poems are parables peopled with archetypes, birthing a world of spells and curses, of daughters betrayed by their own blood, of children vanishing in the woods, and, through it all, a singular heroine gradually emerging to triumph—her mind a butcher's block, her feet sprinting toward the twist.

From "Self-portrait as Thousandfurs":

when the bet proved not too broad
for you, and before me, the cloak held
open as a boast, to have slipped into that
primitive skin, made out towards
another sort of prowling around.
To have turned my how how into a howl.
To have picked up my heavy hem and run.

With decadent fairy-tale rhetoric, wild child Stacy Gnall depicts a harrowing coming of age, luring us to indulge our anima.

Stacy Gnall is from Cleveland, Ohio. She earned her undergraduate degree at Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA at the University of Alabama, and she is currently pursuing her PhD in literature and creative writing at the University of Southern California. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Cincinnati Review, The Florida Review, The Gettysburg Review, Indiana Review, The Laurel Review, The Spoon River Poetry Review, and Prairie Schooner. She lives in Los Angeles, California.
