1-0 out of 5 stars I paid $1.00 for this book,
at a local book fair and I'm quite certain I overpaid.Bearing in mind this work is a bit dated, I still found it to be extremely facile, poorly managed and contrived beyond my ability to appreciate it's message. How convenient, I thought, that in a country of 22 million people (back then) every person the protagonist met knew something about this mysterious manuscript, i.e. The Celestine Prophecy. The characters are poorly developed and speak with the same voice. Also, our hero is but a mere caricature of anything remotely resembling substantive. The scene that sunk it for me was when the main character was standing next to a man in (or near) the jungle whom was promptly shot and killed by an advancing soldier. Our blood spattered hero then made haste to a nearby mountain top and became completely ensconced in the beauty of his environment and thereby became energetic, bouncy, light and enraptured, more-or-less.Yeah, right!A man's chest explodes right next to me and minutes later I'm on a hill having a mystical, Samadhi-esque experience.Personally, I'd be heading to the nearest Wal-mart so I could buy a new pair of underwear!!

The insights themselves had some quality to them, but the device (i.e., this book) used to bring them into the minds and hearts of the general populace is poorly crafted and not worth the 5 hours I put into reading it. 1 star for the attempt.

3-0 out of 5 stars A spiritual philosophy within an adventure story
This book is a good read and leads you to a spiritual philosophy regarding energy transference and its morality. The book takes you into Peru where 9 manuscripts are lost. These manuscripts hold secret wisdoms for enlightenment and the plot allows the main characters to search for them one at a time. It is a peaceful story that has meaning and is well worth a read.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
disappointing writing to the extent that it detracts from the incredibly unbelievable and contrived story.i couldnt finish it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celestine Prophecy hardcopy book
A pleasant buying experience.I was able to easily find and buy the item. The item arrived on or before the expected delivery date in the condition described in the offer and as I expected.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I read this book because of friend of mine suggested it was a great read. Based on the title I had no idea it was fiction.
I quickly figured that out during the first chapter and just adjusted my frame of mind.
The conversations that take place are hard to read because they are so overly descriptive and the characters drone on and on. The main character still doesn't seem to grasp any of these insights and comes across as an idiot.
Ugh, It took me over two weeks to read this becuase I had to force myself to pick it up.
I don't understand why it is such popular book but I certainly do not recommend you waste your time. ... Read more

Katie Wilkinson has found the perfect man at lastbut one day, he disappears from her life, leaving behind only a diary for her to read. The diary is written by a woman named Suzanne and is addressed to her new baby boy, Nicholas. In it she pours out her heart about the joy he has brought her. As Katie reads this moving story, she realizes that the man shes fallen in love with is Suzannes husband, Nicholas father. She reads on, filled with terror and hope as she struggles to understand what happenedand whether her new love can survive. Written with Pattersons perfect pitch for emotion and suspense, this novel captures beautifully the joys of a new family. This is an unforgettable story, at once heartbreaking and full of hope. Pattersons readers follow him anywhereto biological experimentation in When the Wind Blows and to religious suspense in Cradle and All. They trust him to deliver a moving and suspenseful experiencewhich this book does spectacularly!Amazon.com Review
Talk about a change of pace! Renowned suspense writer and Edgar Award winner James Patterson, author of such bestsellers-turned-blockbuster-movies as Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, exposes his sensitive side in his new novel, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas. Katie Wilkinson's boyfriend Matt dumps her; not a total cad, he leaves her a gift, a diary kept by Suzanne, his first wife, for their son Nicholas. Though it's not exactly the diamond ring Katie was hoping for, she's unable to make herself destroy the diary--against her better judgment, Katie begins to read.

Drawn against her will into the other woman's world, Katie learns of physician Suzanne's heart attack at age 35 and her decision to slow down, accomplished by a move to Martha's Vineyard and a new job as a simple country doctor. When love comes knocking, in the form of housepainter-cum-poet Matt Harrison, Suzanne is ready to listen to her newly repaired heart. Though painful for Katie, she begins to know and like Suzanne and her infant son Nicholas. Suzanne's devotion to Matt and their son shines through, as well as her plainspoken wisdom. While the journal helps Katie understand Matt, whether they can write a future together remains in question. --Alison Trinkle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising and Wonderful
First, this is by James Patterson - one of the KINGS of the scary/suspenseful novels. So when this little book came out I thought - interesting title - and of course bought it thinking that it would be a new twist for Patterson.Second, I HATE love stories!Last - I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!I have read it three times and each time I find myself smiling, crying, HOPING!My niece read it when we were flying to California and she started sobbing OUT LOUD with the hiccups and SOBS during the middle of the flight! The flight attendant came running and I just laughed and said 'it's a beautiful/sad love story and she got to the best part'.I was completely blown away that a story like this came from Patterson!HATS OFF TO YOU JAMES PATTERSON!You are no 'one-note' author!WOW!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Predictable!
by Emily Placido, author of Julita's Sands: A Memoir

This story is out of character for Patterson who is known for writing mysteries. Purely a love story with many emotional turns, the premise is that a woman is given a diary to read by her new lover. I really enjoyed reading the diary of a young mother to her new born son.Patterson's writing is terrific as it brings out the sentiments beautifully. The twist, is that the man who gave the woman the diary is the husband of the young mother.I like the storyline very much, but it was a little too predictable for me. Apparently James Patterson wrote this from his own personal experience of losing a woman he loved but finding a new life and love with someone else.As I read the story I felt like Patterson was trying to imitate Nicholas Sparks, who would have made this a much better book!I would really have liked to see Nicholas Sparks write this story instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enchanting!
I read this book from cover to cover in a day, and couldn't put it down. What a fantastic story! I thought about the characters for days afterwards, and I still can not get some of the images out of my mind. I laughed, and I cried. (Ok- I cried a lot!) Definately one of the best, and most touching books I have ever read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Touching
James Patterson is another very well known author who I've never read.Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas is probably not representative of most of Mr. Patterson's works but was written from his heart.

If you're in the mood for a touching love story, this is just the ticket.Matt is the guy every woman dreams of falling in love with, kind, caring, calm and cute.Suzanne was the doctor on the fast track when her health forced her to find a simpler life. That's how she found Matt. And then came Nicholas.Dear, sweet, Nicholas.

Katie also falls head over heals for Matt not knowing anything about his past.Matt leaves Suzanne's diary on her doorstep when he's unable to tell her himself.

This story also contains heartbreak that will bring tears to your eyes. But the power of a new love can heal all wounds.

I rate Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas a 3 out of 5.It's a nice, sweet, fast summer read perfect for beach or to relax with.

Bring your box of tissues when you read this book.A very quick read - I read this in one sitting. This is about a love story, a few actually, and how one love story affects another.Katie Wilkinson is in love with Matt, and believes that he is going to ask her to marry him. However, he leaves her without a word, but leaves behind a diary. This diary had belonged to Suzanne.Only by reading this diary will Katie come to understand why Matt left her.

Suzanne wrote her diary for her unborn child, Nicholas. In here Suzanne writes down all her hopes and dreams for Nicholas. You can almost touch Suzanne's unchanging love for her future son.So what makes this book so good? You are constantly on the edge of your seat while reading this, even though it is far from the mystery or thriller book that James Patterson usually writes. You want to know why Matt would leave Katie, for what seems, no reason at all. Also, you are able to get two points of views: Katie's and Suzanne's, each with their own individual affect on Matt as well on each other in the end.

As to not spoil the book, I will say it again, have tissues handy. This is a refreshing change for James Patterson and I look forward to more books such as this one written by him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enthralling, funny, cynical, heartbreaking
Taken captive and held for five years as a POW in Vietnam, Eddie, in his early twenties when captured, recounts his years of incarceration and the period following his release and return to the States. While held as a POW he develops a close attachment to his cell mate, Vin, and their plans for the future together with the prospect of eventually returning to his beautiful wife help sustain Eddie through that period. But events following hisliberation turn out to be very different from his imaginings.

A story filled with believable characters and a complex plot, Some Kind of Hero piles on the tension as it builds towards its unpredictable conclusion. At times touching, at times very moving, by turns funny and cynical, often very frank, it is a captivating book, hard to put down. The relationship between Eddie and Vin is beautiful and heartbreaking, by contrast some of Eddie's exploits following his release border on the slap-stick. What is constant is the high standard of the writing; altogether an enthralling novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner
It's impossible to read Kirkwood and not beg for more. After reading P.S. Your Cat is Dead, I became a fan forever and went on to read Some Kind of Hero, looking forward to what he had in store for us next. Unfortunately, Kirkwood died in 1989. I feel saddened by the loss of such genius in the literary world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Read As You Mature Into Books
When I was a boy, maybe 12 or 13, my mother told me I should read this book. For once I listened to her and I did.It was quite an experience. Little another reviewer stated, the book drags you in and captivates youuntil it is done.

My mom is gone now, but I will always remember herwanting me to read this. One of the best books I have ever read in mylife.

C'mon Amazon, find this book and put it back on the shelf so we canget it. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely undescribable
This book just pulls you in, one second you'll be laughing as hard as possible and turn the page and tears will be streaming down your face.It grabs you by the heart and you can't help but to want everything to workout. To this very day I'll find myself wondering how Eddie's (the maincharacter) doing. It's a must-read for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping.A great tale.Worth the out-of-print search.
ever since i read "p.s. your cat is dead" (by the same author), i became a james kirkwood fan.he's witty, his writing flows and he creates characters you can't help but care about (i really hate reading abook about characters for whom i feel nothing).since then (about 10 yearsnow), i always search bookstores--right after the massive stephen kingsection) to see if he's written something new (he hasn't--i just keephoping).

i did an out of print search to get this one.LOVED IT.iread it cover to cover in one day because it completely sucked me in.it'san excellent story with compelling characters.kirkwood also has a realgift with irony, humor and humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be on the best sellers list.
If America knew what was in the book it would be the number one top seller in America.

This book should be recommended reading for all School Authoritative figures and all politicians and all Christian and Jewish Church Authoritative figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bauer is finally bringing morals into America
Although Gary Bauer may be extreme at some points, I believe that the views that he and Hobson display are valid. The youth in America are growing up corrupt and there are people who let this go by.Morals need tobe instilled into our children so that they will grow up to believe whatPresident Clinton did was wrong, and that should not be tolerated.Thisbook is shocking but definitely a wake-up call for all parents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Occasionally good points given by bad messangers
Let me first say that I am, I think, a decent person.I am, however imperfect or inadequate, a practicing Christian. Thus, just because I disagree with the great morality spew of Mr. Dobson andMr.(President?)Bauer does not mean that I'm a perverted, pornographypeddling, single mother kissing, out of wedlock born and thieving person. I hope you can see the sarcasim. But, yes, I am a normal person!

OK- this book does on occasion make good points. The cultural left all toooften over the past 30 years has done some pretty stupid things, yet so hasthe cultural right. If Dobson and Bauer are so concerned about 'children'then they should do a pragmatic - and not right wing - book on the affectsof everything from pornography to unemployment to racism to lack of healthcare to divorce to the global economy to religious values, etc.Childrendon't know a darn thing about liberalism vs. conservatism, they only knowthe values we teach them.Teaching them that gun control is bad and thathomosexual control is good just doesn't make sense.Teaching them thattobacco is good and drugs are bad just doesn't make sense. Why can't weembrace moral responsibility on both the left and right? This book suredoesn't.

In fact, I would dare argue that this book occasionally hamsit up and demagogues, if not lies, about some issues.I refuse to believesome of the things I read.If they were true, we'd be in Communist 'MotherRussia' now! Also, I refuse to believe that the 'pro-family'(hah!)policiesof the Reagan/Bush Administrations actually helped families. What a lie! Also, I find the book's section on the child care debate to be a mockery ofwhat is true and what families need.

Yes, the book does make somegood points. The cultural left does occasionally support what is nothingbut ugly moral relativism. But so does the right. It's all about theirconstituences.By getting into the constituency business and out of thefamily business, Dr. Dobson has done himself - and our country - a hugedisservice.I remember my mother, who is a fine Democrat, would alwayslisten to Dr. Dobson's show.In fact, I bet that many of the things shetaught me came from Dr. Dobson's sagacious teachings on being a goodparent. But what does endorsing Bob Dornan for Congress or the flat taxhave to do with my Mom or Dad being good parents? Thus, Dr. Dobson, quitepossibly, began his slide into right wing land right here.He shows hislove of politics through the book's occasional dishonesty, I am sad tostate. As for Mr. Bauer, he has always been into the right wing politicalcircuit.

In ending, it is sad that the distinguished authors havetaken a subject, moral decline, and demagogued it.Dr. Dobson could havegotten a good Democrat to write the book with him and written one great andinfluencal book.Instead, he wrote another book which conservatives canput on their bookshelf next to "Up from Liberalism" by William F.Buckley, "The Conscience of a Conservative" by Goldwater and"Where's the Rest of Me?" by President Reagan(oh yes, let usnever forget "The Way Things Oughtta Be" by Rush!).This is awasted opportunity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Propaganda, pure and simple.Don't believe all you read.
This book reports that the White House distributed a workbook to schools asking children "to draw the world's largest penis, compare white and black penises, and show their parents making love." Gary Wills, arespected journalist, says that Dobson has never been able to substantiatethis claim. I guess that William Bennett, who has written the book'sintroduction, doesn't mind if these kinds of lies are published, but I do. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars O'Shaughnessy's Other Books Are Much Better
I read this book many years ago. O'Shaughnessy's other books are much better when it comes to making money in the stock market.I doubt that 1% of the readers of this book ever analized a fund portfolio as prescribed by the author. If you want to make money, read "What Works On Wall Street", also by O'Shaughnessy. But you'll need to be VERY math oriented and you'll need to read the book two or three times; but it's worth your time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Change diskette to CD
It is hard to get a computer with diskette slots. Wish there was a CD instead of the diskette.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help!
I'm missing something here: the apparent feasibility of the author's stock-picking techniques with my little PC?

I found the floppy disk accompanying the book unreadable. My local computor builder/dealer/consultant couldn't read it either. My computer kept calling for another disk, which did not come with the book I ordered or with its replacement. The disk seems to herald back to the days of DOS; whatever, I'm lost.

More on the downside, the valueline online survey is unmanageable for me (I got a masters in English and I've been studying and investing stocks for 25 plus years).Determining the average for numerous search fields (market cap., P/E ratio, Price/Book ratio, etc.) that O'Shaughnessy calls for cannot be done with the basic online service.A simple piece of data such as "dividend" or "yield" can be tough to pin down with 7-8 different kinds listed (estimated, quarterly, current, etc.).

The book, in spite of my moronic protests, is praiseworthy. The methods make sense. There is something beautiful about their simplicity - the step by step processes of narrowing down fields in order to determine the best bargains (value) or the best upside potential (growth).

A guiding principle of O'Shaughnessy's argument - the answer to the nagging question of why so many portfolio managers fail - is very simple: they either have no useable plan or they do, but they don't stick to it.

I'm convinced this book has the answer. It's just so damn grueling to apply the principles; a dozen calls and emails to valueline still leave me clueless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Similar to his other books but still interesting
His theory is that by analyzing the holdings of top mutual funds, and then determining how they differ most from the index, you can then emulate the mutual fund's performance.

You can even improve on the performance of mutual funds because you can follow their strategy in a more consistent fashion and because you can reduce their strategy to its essential elements. Often even good fund managers are not entirely consistent.

An example of a strategy is: from the stocks with

12 month EPS gain >20% and
26 week % price change>20% and
Last Qtr EPS % chg > 20% and
Valueline Timeliness Rank <=5

Pick the ten stocks with highest estimated EPS growth for next year .

He explains how to do all this in detail and derives some good looking strategies. Risk is taken into account and proves to be a very useful measure of the reliability of a strategy.

You can use the same techniques to evaluate your broker's recommendations, and the advice from books and newletters. Do they follow a strategy or is it just random tips and hunches?

He also showed how various fund managers changed strategy quite radically without announcing it eg Magellan in the early 1990s.

There are some good tips on how to avoid common traps when using quantitive strategies eg using single variable strategies.

He also explores combining various strategies and shows how to build your own.

He did not really prove his theory which is that noone really makes money by individual stock picks, it is all strategy.

As a final caveat, if you don't like numbers you will not like this book. But it seems you cannot succeed in investment without being very friendly with numbers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Certainly worth the price for the mechanically inclined...
It's been 6 years since this book was published, and I believe that many of the fundamental items identified by the author still apply. Most investors are looking for rules for identifying good stocks, and using these techniques offers someone a way to actually test the results they could expect - at least if you're willing to use a service like ValueLine. The only downside of the book was in the lack of exploring additional ideas - things like shorter holding periods, stop-loss strategies, diversification across industries, etc.For the price, buy it! ...
