Product Description

Are you ready to be a contender? Sylvester Stallone's action–oriented program for getting fit and eating right is also a revealing portrait of one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Sly Moves is more than just a handbook on fitness and nutrition. It's a provocative and candid inside look at the trials and triumphs of one of Hollywood's most famous stars. Throughout his career, Sly has always been body conscious, and as he experimented with intense training methods for various films, he has learned – often the hard way – what works and what definitely doesn't. His goal here is to help readers change harmful fitness habits, learn to counter reckless eating, and appreciate who they are even when they don't feel much like action heroes.

Part 1 is a history of Sylvester Stallone's physique, as the Rocky star shares stories about his being bullied as a child, finding comfort and strength at the gym, and then later, the wild ride of fad diets, crash–training regimens and workout disasters that fringed on obsession.

Part 2, The Sly Moves workout, outlines four exercise programs: classic, advanced, women's and hardcore. The workouts only require a commitment of about three hours a week (exactly the same amount of time Sly works out).

The Sly Moves eating plan (Part 3) is Sly's nutrition guide, highlighted by a unique meal plan for a lifetime of good eating.

Part 4 gives Sly an opportunity to inspire and encourage readers to make Sly Moves part of a long–term picture of health, fitness and wellbeing, with tips on everything from keeping goals and relaxation techniques to lessons learned from The Contender.

Amazon.com Review
Movie fans can argue the merits of Rocky vs. Rambo, but no one can accuse Sylvester Stallone of being a couch potato. In Sly Moves, Stallone recounts the training methods that turned him into one of the true Hollywood hard-bodies of all time, tailoring the best and worst of what he’s learned from forty years in the gym and testing trendy diets into a simple (3-hour-a-week) workout/eating program anyone can follow.

Stallone mixes in plenty of personal tales from his storied career along with practical advice, including a three-day look inside the life of an action hero approaching age 60: what he eats, when he works out, what famous people he bumps into at his private Beverly Hills gym and the L.A. hot spots where he does dinner. Sly might help you tighten up those abs with three kinds of crunches, but odds are the new six pack won’t get you a table next to him at Spago. Still, all the trappings of celebrity aside, you only have to check out the photos of him demonstrating his "Rambo pulldowns," "Rocky chins," or other exercises ("moves") he recommends to see he knows a thing or two about staying fit. As for how to "gain will power" and "live your dream," you could do a lot worse than listen to a guy of humble beginnings who willed himself into everything he ever dreamed of becoming—one hammer curl at a time. --Patrick Jennings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing tips from my childhood hero
I grew up watching Sly's movies. Not only the Rocky saga, but Rambo and every single movie he was on.
I'm a child of the 80's and back then he was the greastest action hero.
As i became older, i started to understand the message and the feeling behind Rocky. I learned that Sly went through just as much troubles and difficulties as Rocky to become the successful man the he is now.
I have some scenes from Rocky on my Sony Walkman and i always play them when i feel like i'm not strong enough to go on.
'Gonna Fly Now' is the alarm song on my cell phone. It gives that extra boost in the morning to start my day.
He is a huge source of motivation in my life, not only because of everything i said above, but also because i'm a gym fanatic just like he is.
I can't get enough of Rocky's training sessions and i always picture them at the gym when i feel like i can't do another squat or another bicep curl.

It's no surprise that this book became almost like a bible to me. It brings you close to the man behind the myth.
He tells you a little bit about his story and gives you a lot of encouragment to change your body and, most importantly, your life.
Sly is able to speak to the reader in a very honest way. He doesn't promise you a miracle workout or a miracle diet. He has the same belief that i do: there's no magic in becoming fit and losing weight. You gotta work really hard for it, but you can also have a lot of fun doing it.

The best part: he understands the difference between men and women when it comes to weight training.
I never needed an extra energy boost to work out, but after reading his book i'm more pumped than ever!

He also gives you great tips on how to eat right without starving and depriving yourself from the kinds of food you love.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about Sly and need some guidance on how to spruce up your exercise routine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
Some awesome insights and on the man who can. He share his story in four parts. Part one starts off with his background and his long road to success. He shares his knowledge on the challenges he faced to get where is he is today. Part two contains exercise regimes, some of them familiar and some nice new moves. He gives additional insight on each move through his hard earned experience. Part three is on nutrition, here he shares his views on "diets" and a healthy lifestyle. In part four he extends his wisdom to general life to motivate you to go to new heights and reach your dreams. A well worth read for anyone who admires the Italian Stallion behind the characters of Rocky and Rambo.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are a Stallone fan, you will love this book!
I enjoyed this book because Stallone not only talks about how to build strength and maintain a healthy weight, but he also discusses how he prepared for each of his movie roles. He talks about how he has tried every diet out there, and how diets don't work - lifestyle changes do. I totally agree!

4-0 out of 5 stars 'Sly Moves' - Easy read, great health and fitness advice [REVIEW]
I've come across a lot of books penned by celebrities about health and fitness but this is probably one of the best. 'Sly Moves' isn't trying to sell you anything. It isn't an autobiography. It isn't complex or complicated. Really, it's all about Sylvester Stallone revealing his exercise and nutrition tips. I read a lot about health and fitness and am usually very confused by how some celebrities will write a book that either feels limited or completely uninformed. Not the case with this book. The best part of this very short read is Sylvester Stallone showing you some very easy workout moves that will help strengthen your core, build muscle and requires very little equipment or time. He devotes much of the book to showing you the "moves" and does a great job of instructing you on how to perform them and the benefits of doing the moves. Each move is also accompanied with a bonus tip on how to make it even better or something to keep in mind while performing it.

This book, unlike many, is really for everyone. I found it very helpful that unlike many celebrity health books that come out that he kept in mind that he may have both men and women readers. He splits the "moves" into two sections, one for men, the other for women, but really, the moves are interchangeable. There's a lot of variety in the moves and even though I was quite familiar with many of them, he gave some great insight or tips that I hadn't considered before hand. In other words, the "moves" were really invaluable and the book was greatly helpful and informative, making it a great purchase. He doesn't spend a lot of time on the nutrition part but he gives you a very simple list of foods you should include in your eating plan. He also reviews a variety of diets and tells you why each are ineffective and why you shouldn't diet but should instead focus on eating right and how to stay dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. The only part of the book that I felt was unnecessary was toward the end when he devotes a few pages to talking about his personal schedule. It felt out of place, very random and didn't go along with the rest of the book.

If you're looking for a book on weight training and general tips to a healthy lifestyle that doesn't demand too much of you, get this book. It's not a hard read - I read the entire book in just a matter of hours. I was still impressed by what I read and felt this was one of the few celebrity-penned health books that I'd recommend others to purchase. Definitely check this out.

4-0 out of 5 stars I read it an 1 hour.
At 44, I'm still trying to figure out a good workout/diet routine.I was given this book for Christmas and it's written like Stallone is talking to you.I read it, cover to cover, while my wife napped.I'm still curious as to how many grams of protein Stallone eats per day, based on his body weight, as I'm unsure how many to eat, myself. Also, I'd like to know, precisely, what his workout consists of.And, one exercise listed as a tricep exercise (seated or standing, holding a curl bar, palms downward) really seems to be a biceps/forearm exercise.I can't see how it works the triceps.Perhaps the publisher put the wrong photo or description in.Other than that, it's a good book, very easy to read. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars For fans only
How good could be an unauthorized biography of a living person? Not too great, but it's the only one on the market that deserves to throw an eye on. Something to stand on my library's shelf beside "Sly Moves : My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream".

1-0 out of 5 stars Really poor excuse for knowledgeable writing . . .
It would be poor even if it admitted it were fiction. This author clearly does not know Sly Stallone, and set out solely to criticize him at every turn.Very poor use of "quotations" and "friends" . . . totally inaccurate attempt at "biography".Shameful way to make money off the life of a respected actor and person.Don't waste the time . . .

3-0 out of 5 stars Revealing, but sort of from rather low perspective!
Seemingly a panorama of the life, the work, and the relationships of the big-time star Sylvester Stallone's till he married the third. Not much praise, lots of criticisms.Quite complete in says sharing.Source of the says is either Hollywood street or streets where Sylvester Stallone is or is made to be seen.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a book for Stallone fans
This book is so full of errors and inconsistancies that I began to doubt everything in it.It made me wonder if the author even knows Sly as a person or understands him in any capacity. It certainly isn't a book for Stallone FANS because it portrays Sly as a bottom feeder and (tries!) to makes the reader think that Sly is a low-life who possesses every negative quality known to mankind. Not only does the author make fun of Sly on practically every page from beginning to end, he also quotes all negatives from "alledged" co-workers, "friends", critics, etc. Most of the "quotes" from Stallone are hearsay, not from actual interviews between Sly and the author. And nowhere in the book will you find that Sly cooperated with or endorsed this "biography".It's a joke and the worst [amount of money] I ever spent on a book. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars ROCKY TITLES
I was very pleased with the book and was fascinated to find out information that I did not know about Sly.However some parts did get boring for instance I did not want to know the relationships in detail ofSly.HOwever some bits were very interesting this included the review onhis films and his background. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not very thick, but GREAT for Stallone information.
I was writing a term paper about the artistry of Stallone, and found this book in my school library. I have since decided to buy my own copy, as this is probably one of the most informative books I have found about Stallone. The book is not very thick, probably around 96 pages in all, but is loaded with information on how Stallone started out as an actor-writer-director, how he wrote and sold Rocky, as well as other neat facts concerning the filming of Rocky. And, since the book was written by Stallone himself, you won't get any gossip or unfounded rumors about the star in this printing.

Again, the book is really a souvenir book intended to be a companion to the first Rocky film, but despite that, it should be on any movie buff or filmmaker's shelf. In fact, I have enjoyed this book so much that I plan on buying a copy for myself, just to read when I need inspiration to reach my goals.

Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Product Description

"Two extraordinarily talented journalists, Michael Vitez and Tom Gralish, have captured this uniquely American phenomenon with whimsy, poignancy, and utter charm." --John Grogan, author of Marley & Me

Pulitzer Prize-winners Michael Vitez and Tom Gralish of the Philadelphia Inquirer spent a year visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art to capture the stories of "Rocky runners," who come from all over the world to run up America's most famous steps--just as Sylvester Stallone did in Rocky. People make the pilgrimage to mark a new beginning, to seek inspiration, to celebrate an accomplishment, to find the perfect backdrop for romance, or simply because they love the movie. As one runner says, "It gives you the feeling that anything is possible."

The authors have uncovered an enduring cultural phenomenon, one that centers on Philadelphia, and yet, as Michael Vitez writes in his introduction, is a true American, and even international, rite of passage.

The book includes fifty-two profiles and one hundred color photographs, together with a foreword by Sylvester Stallone, and interviews with Rocky’s Academy Award-winning director John G. Avildsen, composer Bill Conti, and cameraman Garrett Brown.

In his foreword, Sylvester Stallone sums up his thoughts on the phenomenon: "You can’t borrow Superman's cape. You can't use the Jedi laser sword. But the steps are there. The steps are accessible. And standing up there, you kind of have a piece of the Rocky pie."

Praise for Rocky Stories:

"[C]harming photo essay of people who retraced Rocky's steps and felt their own exhilaration doing it."--San Francisco Chronicle

"The extent to which the Rocky myth--that of the perennial loser who proves he's 'not just another bum from the neighborhood'--has resonated is documented in this winning book."--Sports Illustrated

"I've only skimmed it, and already I'm in love with the book Rocky Stories: Tales of Love, Hope, and Happiness at America's Most Famous Steps. (It had me at the title.)...It may sound like a movie tie-in, but it's not. It's just a fascinating testament to how the words 'Rocky' and 'underdog' are still interchangeable 30 years after the film's release."--Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch column

"Rocky Stories captures the sprawling complexity of life. It's a delight." --Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down and Guests of the Ayatollah

"A book that is an absolute joy and an absolute blast and quintessentially American in its hopes and dreams and sweetness." --Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights and A Prayer for the City

"The Rocky steps have become a special place for tourists and Philadelphians alike. Virtually everyone who lives here or comes here wants to say that they ran up the Rocky steps and saw the incredible view down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. When I was Mayor, the city planned 24 hours of millennium celebrations, one each hour. Of course we had to kick it off at the Rocky steps and we did so with 2,000 people all dressed like Rocky running up the steps at the same time. It was awesome." --Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Early Years !
I enjoyed reading about Sly Stallones early years and there were a lot of super pictures all spread throughout the book. The book was very detailed about his birth even, and his childhood and how that affected his entire life and the outlook he had on himself and how it actually formed his life mission statements and made him what he is today. I don't want to give it away, you need to read it for yourself.I love this man and he has impacted my life, as I am very sick and disabled now. I have had to find someone that met the odds against him and fought hard to battle back and win.I feel that Sly Stallone has done this in real life as well as in some of the movies he has been in like Rocky and Rambo. He has been an example for me to not give up no matter how very sick I am and will become, as I have no good news ahead, and the same for my disabilities... I must not loose sight of the Eye of the Tiger !God Bless Sly Stallone for impacting my life like he has so that when the tough gets harder, I have someone to use as a role model that I can cling to.This book is a nice and informative view of the early years. If you are a fan you will enjoy owning this book for sure. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Rocky II, fails to intrest this reader
When I recently read the book Rocky II, by Sylvester Stallone, based on the sequel to the popular movie, I had high hopes. Now that I finished reading it, I'll tell you what I think of it. In my personal opinion, I didn't enjoy the book. You would think that a book based on the movie would be just as good, but that simply is not the case here. To be fair,Sylvester Stallone is a very good actor, but he isn't a good enough writter. Stallone writes short, choppy chapters and uses the same dialogue as the movie. For example, he says: "Adrian c'mere, I wanna talk honest with ya. I know the Rock-what-fifteen, sixteen years? An' him I just wouldn't expect a change." I didn't likereading the story liked that. It gets quite frustrating and a little annoying. He(Stallone) should have written it better, using regular words without writing the same accent(c'mere) and used fewer longer chapters.
The plot of Rocky II is about the same as the first one. Rocky is beginning to settle down with his wife Adrian, while one day Apollo Creed starts taunting him on TV. Well they plan to fight again. Rocky trains to fight Apollo thoughout the book and he is fighting for his love, Adrian. The Main confict was mostly Rocky vs. himself. Rocky has some issues inside himself and tries(and succeeds) to work them out. One character that stands out in my mind was Micky, Rocky's trainer. He always helps Rocky thoughout the story. At the end, Rocky is getting beaten by Creed and Micky offers to get him out of the fight. Micky says, "Call it off-you can't win unless you knock him out! You're getting killed out there!" He's always there when Rocky need him. I wish there was more people like that. The message the writer wants to get across is to believe in yourself. The Rocky series is the ultamite underdog movie.
In conclusion, I didn't enjoy reading Rocky II. The writting and the short chapters are some of the reasons. I don't recommend this book. It is a fine movie to watch, but skip reading the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Unrealized Dreams Of Three Brothers In 1940's New York
In this movie Sylvester Stallone plays Cosmo Carboni who seeks a better life than the one he has in Hell's Kitchen back in the 1940's. He dreams to escape just might be realized when he convinces his brother to become a Profesional Wrestler going by the name of 'Kid Salami". Armade Assante is also in this film and gives a very good performance as the ordinary guy whohas dreams of a better life. Anne Archer is also present in this movie and as always she is a very classy lady to watch. This is a very good movie about unfullfilled Hopes and Dreams and the Importance Of Family.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kid salami
The first scene is pretty neat. Stallone sprinting on rooftops for money. I think that scene inspired the rocky training montages. Can't really say that the rest of the film is worth watching. This is one of those films that will never make it to DVD and I can completely understand why. I doubt there are many people out there willing to purchase it. I think the movie could have done alot better without the wrestling aspect of the story. Stallone has a habit of starting a story off well and then mixing some stupid sport into it. It worked with the rocky movies but that's about it.

Kid Salami is one of the dumbest names I've ever heard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fueding, fighting, dames, and the disire to leave the slums.
With 3 brothers trying to put their difference aside, they try to conquer the wrestling world. With Cosmo(Stallone), and brotherLenny(Arsanti)arguing over the same dame like teenage kids. Their youngestbrother VICTOR is stomping butt in HIGH OCTANE wresling matches. Ipersonally think that Stallone(who directed the movie) should have usedbetter, and more ferocious wrestlers than Ray Stevenson,Ted Debiosi, andthe Funks. Although Terry Funk's lines were hilarious, and every wrestlingbuff out there knows that he is the King of HARDCORE wreslting. A very goodbetrayal of if you can't fight, get someone bigger than you to fight foryou. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reliable Purchase
After my 5 year old son was diagnosed with AVSD, I engrossed myself into extensive research about his condition. While I discovered many other books with great information, I found this one to be the most inclusive, definitive and easy to interpret. The Q&A are broken down under each chapter specifically dealing with certain attributes one might be facing with a diagnoses; not all,but most of my questions were answered after reading this book. Highly, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Real Q's & A's that are relevant
My new born daughter was recently diagnosed with Complex Congential Heart Defects and naturally I wanted to learn as much as I could about the topic.I purchased several related boks through Amazon.com and founf this one to be very relevant and answered lots of appropriate questions for me.I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Heart Defects of any type.It is very thorough and covers every defect I am aware of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents of Kids with CHD's
I loved the question/answer format of this book.It made an overwhelming and complicated topic far more understandable. I wish this book had been available when our son was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Vessels 12 years ago.We had so many questions, and while the doctors and nurses were super, a resource like this would have been invaluable becuase the questions don't stop when you finally leave the hospital!I'm sure the authors will keep the book as up-to-date as possible, but just know that cutting edge research is improving the methods of diagnosing and treating chd's every day.So, if the treatment protocol your doctor recommends isn't listed, don't panic. You might be benefiting from the latest research! When our son had his surgery, the Arterial Switch operation, which is now standard procedure, was only being done at a handful of hospitals around the country.Kids born with chd's today have a much better outlook thanks to the advances made by research. And, with more research, tomorrow will be even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Guide For All Parents
My son Noah was diagnosed in-utero with a VSD and at the age of 9 days received his first sonogram and EKG. The VSD closed - confirmed at his 1-year appointment, but was diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis at this same appointment. This book guides one through diagnosis, parental coping, issues/caring for the newly born, answers many of your obvious and not so obvious questions, surgery - what to expect/how to prepare and the likely impact your childs'condition may have on his/her life basis current knowledge. It also is full of annecdotal stories from parents that are going through the same thing you are as well as commentary from pediatric cardiologists. Additionally, there are resources from the internet to camps in the appendicies. No doubt, the book is at times depressing, but it is also enlightening. The undelying message is you need to be prepared for what you and your child are yet to experience and it is a map to guide you in this area

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on boxing, a lot of interviews for your buck!
This book is a great read, there are 16 interviews in this book with some of boxing's biggest fighters and with only 152 pages to it, I found it to be a delightfully easy read. You can read this book in a single sitting whether at home or on an airplane.I found myself thoroughly engrossed in it and I couldn't put it down, I particularly liked the interviews with female boxer, Christy Martin and British boxer, Ricky Hatton.I like her take on boxing, motherhood and Perfect10 model boxing, as well. All in all, a very great read and I'd recommend this book to everyone, who likes an easy and enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Really Great Book!!I'm really enjoying reading it!
This book is VERY interesting, a lot of interviews with some very famous fighters and a few fighters that are international like, Ricky Hatton and Kostya Tsyzu.I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the interview with Christy Martin, very good all around book!A very good, well written and short read, I read it this past weekend.I'm not to into boxing, but this book is very good and enjoyable, you'll be glad you bought it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great all around book!!!
This book is a great all around book!!!I didn't think I would enjoy it because I'm not into boxing but this book is more than just about boxing. The Author takes you though the process of how to get an interview and goes into the background stories of who he interviews. Also, this book takes the reader on the Authors journey through life.By the end of the book I could see how the Author had grown and evolved as a person.A person who started out doing interviews for the fame of it, then by the end of the book finds himself closer to God, his family and friends.I felt like I was right there with him rooting for him in the boxing ring of life.I particularly liked how this book gave me knowledge on how to go about getting interviews with famous people, I felt like I was right along side of the Author getting the interviews. All in all, I felt like this book was really heart felt and is about people's lives, their stories and what makes each person unique as a person. This book has a lot of boxing and boxers in it but its not you typical boxing book. It's a great all around book!!!It's a must read!!! ... Read more
