5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My parents bought me this book when I was 5 ( in 1977) and I was so glad to find it on Amazon for my kids.It answers all of their questions perfectly and in a matter-of-fact manner without being overly explicit.

It starts with plants, progresses to chickens then dogs and then on to humans.

It's not suitable for people who are up tight about seeing an image of animals in amating position (something any kid who ever lived on a farm would see on any given day).

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have listened to the 2-star customer
A few weeks ago our six year old son gave his first indication that he may be getting curious about learning biology and trying to understand how babies are made. I searched very carefully and bought two books I thought would be age appropriate. I am not a prude at all. But I had two complaints about this book that make it inappropriate for us to show to him at this time. First, my son can read and the language on the cover about "sex" and making it seem like it is a big deal to talk to children about it would totally scare and freak him out. Second, the images really did seem way too graphic for him at this age. Maybe when he is 8 or 10 he can handle seeing the animals copulating or the baby being pulled out of its mother, but not the very first time we explain this to him. I wish I had listened to the few bad reviews of this book and skipped it. The other book we bought, MAKING ANIMAL BABIES by Sneed B. Collard III (2000) is much better and more age appropriate for when he next shows interest so that we can help him understand. In the meantime, I am trying not to push the subject lest we make too big a deal about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend.
The book is in the condition as described, was reasonably priced and arrived in good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book for small and not so small children. It tells the story about "the birds and the bees", in a way that children can relate to.I bought it for my kids 15 years ago and have kept it safe to use when the grandchildren come.I had searched many many children's books on this subject and found this one the easiest's way to approach the delicate subject with young children. This book helped make the subject of "how are babies made" easy to talk about. If you have young children and still need to do the talk, this is the book to start with.A+ ... Product Description
Empire of Dreams is the first definitive look at all of the science fiction, fantasy, and horror films directed by Steven Spielberg, one of the most popular and influential contemporary filmmakers. Spielberg helped spark the renaissance of these genres in the 1970s and 1980s and remains productive and prominent in them today. Following most of Spielberg's oeuvre as well as his audiences' reactions, this book shows that his appeal as a storyteller is primarily visceral and emotional_for he has found ways to tap into his own feelings and to evoke profound emotion in audiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spielberg Explained, with Brilliance and Cinema Scholarship
Steven Spielberg is, without doubt, one of the most gifted and imaginative filmmakers of his generation. To my mind, he has few, if any equals in making films that can profoundly move an audience, excite and enlighten anybody watching truth flicker by at the requisite 24 frames per second. You walk out of "Jaws," as many of us did, knowing you've been frightened half to death, yet also knowing that you've seen great filmmaking at work, the best of the medium, a pure "movie movie," as it was once called when I was kicking around Hollywood in my early days as a writer and journalist.
It was all there, of course, early on, if you want to go back in film history and check out his first feature "Duel." And it's been an amazing ride ever since, from "Jaws" and "ET" to "Indiana Jones" and "Schindler's List" and beyond to "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds." Spielberg never ceases to amaze and dazzle the audience with his command of the medium.
Now Andrew Gordon has explained, in great detail, why and how. In his masterful, brilliant study of Spielberg's career, Gordon provides an in-depth look at each of the several dozen or more films that comprise the master's work. The various of pieces of Spielberg's career and the critical responses to his movies are woven together in a rich tapestry of film scholarship. Gordon has done his homework in spades. His insights into the Spielberg canon are both illuminating and astute. This is no easy task, given the range of emotions that each Spielberg movie appears to evoke. Gordon steps both forward and back in assessing how he reacted to each picture, and how others reacted. In particular, I liked Gordon's chapter on Spielberg's "A.I.," the movie he finished for Stanley Kubrick. Although not a great commercial success, and one that certainly divided the critics, I still remember parts of the film with greater recall and emotional resonance than other Spielberg creations. Gordon, again, explains why, digging with psychological clarity into the various themes of the lost child expressed in the story.
The beauty of Gordon's book is that he is able to connect the various and complex themes that run through Spielberg's work from film to film; we see continuity, interrelationships, the struggle of the artist at work, the hits and misses, and ultimately, the ways in which we always, seemingly, happen to return to the world of Spielberg's boyhood home in suburbia, to all the hopes and promises of the American dream itself. If you're a film scholar, this book is must reading; if your interest in Spielberg is casual and curious, you'll find the text to be highly informative, with penetrating insight into the artist and his remarkable style of filmmaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate for Scholars andGeneralAudiences alike!
Shakespeare states, 'We are such stuff as dreams are made on...'. Professor Gordon has authored a tome remarkable both for its breadth AND depth. Having written and optioned several screenplays myself,I truly believe that this book is in the vanguard of Spielberg scholarship, and a fine chronicle of our creative status as remade dreams. ... Product Description
Major medical journals are finally beginning to recognize hypnosis as a legitimate clinical tool, citing proof positive that it can help ease chronic pain, lessen the side effects of chemotherapy, counteract anxiety and sleep disorders, and more. On Heal Yourself with Medical Hypnosis, Dr. Andrew Weil joins Dr. Steven Gurgevich, a leading expert in mind-body medicine, to offer listeners a 2-CD session on how to use this amazing tool for personal healing. On Part One, Dr. Weil discusses the physiological mechanisms behind the mind-body connection, while Dr. Gurgevich demystifies the practice of hypnosis through a concise account of its history and important case studies. On Part Two, Dr. Gurgevich introduces listeners to four trance induction methods, including trance deepening and a full session of self-healing with hypnosis. "No condition is out of bounds when it comes to the effective use of hypnotherapy," says Dr. Weil. With Heal Yourself with Medical Hypnosis, now listeners can discover this highly effective way to use the power of the mind for optimum health and well-being. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Has merit
I bought this to see if it would help with my sleep and perhaps help with an auto-immune disease. Steven has a very soothing voice. It did help me sleep. But then he would bring you out of the hypnosis which would wake me up--It is very helpful to prepare you for sleep but I don't think it is so great to fall asleep to. He demystifies what hypnosis is and why it can help with a variety of conditions not just diet or smoking. I have not explored this to the end result of seeking a professional medical hypnotist as the CD suggests ( use this for a month to teach yourself how to meditate on cue and then go to a professional to help you with a specific goal). But I can say it is very informative, and helpful to soothe. It is a good introduction to medical hypnosis and surely worth the money if you use it for a month to train yourself before you see a professional. For my purposes the Andrew Weil Breathing CD was most helpful for me as it combines breathing and meditation exercises that can be used for sleep and left on as you drift off.

5-0 out of 5 stars HypnoMedicine
Really Steven Gurgevich is why I purchased this audio CD - I had already lost 45 lbs. with a few other self-hypnosis tapes, but I had heard of him and wanted to check out a slightly more "clinical" methodology.I was vaguely familiar with Dr. Weil as the holistic practitioner on various TV programs, but all he really does is support the concept of medical hypnosis to relieve "real" medical problems.Still, the first CD was nice, it puts hypnosis in a positive light.Considering all the nonsense out there about hypnosis, the last thing I wanted was to purchase some kind of mysterious CD!

Gurgevich shows techniques on the 2nd tape on how to use hypnosis - well, actually, as he says, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, so all you have to do is listen to the CD.I want to mention that I don't have any sickness or disease, but that was not my purpose of using the CD - I simply wanted to hear a different way of using hypnosis. And it worked..just like the other hypnosis CD's I had which also had nothing to do with losing weight, I continued to lose more weight on this CD!Now I have purchased many of Gurgevich's CD's including his "Self-Hypnosis Diet" and I learn new ways to go into trance state with each.If you're interested in working with your unconscious mind in order to attain specific goals, then hypnosis can be effective and Gurgevich is excellent at delivering the message!

4-0 out of 5 stars bought this for my husband, he was not impressed
I did not listen to this.My husband is a hard sell.So not sure how it really is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea
Generally, I do not find that classical music relaxes me as does Andrew Weil's "Breathing:The Master to Self-Healing".I find that excerpts of complete concerti etc. bothers me; I want to hear the whole piece. For others this cd works extremely well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Tightly Strung People
I take Zoloft for anxiety and depression.None the less, I still was having trouble trying to relax.

I'm seventy years old, but probably because I eat un-American, and I do exercise regularly, I'm still quite healthy.Still, I couldn't get my monkey brain to shut up and I couldn't make my stiff muscles in my neck and back relax. This is, at times, quite painful.I exhausted myself every day.And I knew that this stress would someday catch up with me.

Professor Gurgevich's relaxation exercises, as conveyed on this CD set, has been of enormous help.No wonder that Dr. Weil endorses his presentation.

I also appreciate the concept presented: "YOUR MIND-BODY CONNECTION."This insight increases motivation and seems to me to be founded on solid ground.

I do not recommend that anyone stop taking antidepressant medication prescribed by their physician, but I do recommend this CD set to anyone needing help relaxing. These exercises work and have no undesirable side effects.

I'm still reading this book, but this is the best one on the subject that I've found - very informative, explains in
a very concise, complete and clear way the semantics of the sockets' layer under Unix type OSes. Reading it, the
user will acquire the necessary knowledge, needed to understand the relations between protocol (TCP/IP/SCTP/...) implementation/details and the socket layer functionality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fundamental Reference on IP Network Programming
If you are interested in UNIX network programming, this book is THE essential reference.

The writing is clear, comprehensive and interesting for what otherwise have been a very dry topic.

A must have for any developers library.

Product Description
In just over two decades, Indian gaming has become big business throughout the United States. Over 300 tribal casinos in 30 states generate billions of dollars in gambling revenue. The Indian gaming industry continues to grow, attracting widespread attention in the courts, policymaking arenas, and the media. With a complex and controversial federal regulatory scheme and myriad state and tribal regulations, Indian gaming is a growing area of legal and regulatory practice. At the intersection of federal Indian law and gambling law, and against the background of tribal sovereignty, Indian gaming is a complicated and fascinating topic for students, practitioners, and policymakers alike, raising important legal, political, and public policy questions. Indian Gaming Law and Policy provides a comprehensive and accessible explanation of Indian gaming, tracing the genesis of tribal gaming and the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, enacted on the heels of the Supreme Court's landmark decision in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians. The book discusses in detail the Act s provisions and subsequent legal and political developments, including the scope of gaming and state public policy, the line dividing Class II and Class III games, the increased politicization of tribal gaming after the Supreme Court's examination of the Act in Seminole Tribe v. Florida, and the multitude of actors - at federal, state, and tribal levels, and within both the public and private sectors - who have regulatory authority or other influence over Indian gaming. As debates over tribal gaming heat up across the U.S., the book examines developing political and policy issues that may determine the future of Indian gaming and includes a helpful appendix to guide practitioners and students in researching Indian gaming issues.Indian Gaming Law and Policy is a one-stop resource for practitioners and policymakers, and also is a highly readable and comprehensive account appropriate for adoption in courses in law, public policy and public administration, and contemporary issues. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars They talk about changes and variations
This book does not give me any surprise. The authors talk about changes and variations on the track such as Eurpoean import, new track materials, trainer's approaches etc.It is true that only these changes and variations can give us edge (if we investigate and analyse them) on horse betting now as the races are becoming more and more competitive and horse handicappers are also becoming more and more skillful.I therefore only give a three star rating to this book.It is OK but not impressive.

Pretty good book,a little confusing with the time travel stuff.Art fairly good, but could stand some improvement.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's just a comic book
Before you purchase this "book" be forwarned that it is just a lousy comic book (and a pitifully written one at that). I was fooled by the fact that it was described as a paperback. An author could have taken the alternative timeline premise of this "book" and created a very entertaining novel. Instead what you have looks like it was written by 13 year old fan nerds. Don't waste your money. I feel like I was robbed. It didn't deserve even the one star I gave it, but it's the lowest rating I could give it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the Last Generation
In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, peace talks between the Klingon Empire and the Federation officially begin at the Khitomer conference. But in this story, the life of the Federation President was not saved, so that 70 years later, the members of what we normally think of as the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D and -E are the leaders of a resistance movement against the Klingons, except for Worf, who is the Klingon overlord of Earth.

Strangely enough, the only one who knows how history should have played out after Khitomer is Data.In this new timeline, Data's creator specifically programmed him to find a weakness in the Klingons' defenses. What he finds instead is unbelievable:Braxton, that pesky timeship captain from the 29th century, has gone back in time to change history.

Picard deduces that in order to restore the timeline to normal, they will need the use of a ship (if you're a Trekkie you know where this is going!).The USS Excelsior, still under command of Captain Sulu, one of the only Starfleet ships left, comes to everyone's assistance. But when they finally do go back in time, Captain Kirk's Enterprise is not where it's supposed to be, so now it's up to Picard's crew to save the conference the way Kirk's crew did.

If I reveal too much more, I'll spoil everything.Let's just say that it doesn't end in the way that I had hoped. ... Read more

Product Description
The Norfolk Lunatic Asylum opened in 1814 as a pioneer county pauper institution and in 1998 St Andrew's featured among the last of the large psychiatric hospital closures. This history of one particular place for 'madness' covers changing approaches to insanity and treatments over two centuries. It draws extensively upon archival sources to examine the use of buildings and environments; the regimes of long-serving masters, superintendents and medical superintendents; the patients' own experiences; and the rationales, including cultural and gender issues, which informed therapies, relationships and hospital life. However, the contexts of national policies and economic constraints, professional and therapeutic developments, local economy and society, and current research findings are also acknowledged. Chapters dealing with the asylum's transformation as the 1915-19 Norfolk War Hospital and 1940-47 Emergency Hospital have disturbing revelations concerning wartime mental health care: similarly with the loss of local accountability and the experience of resource control under the National Health Service. Interviews with former staff and current personnel recall first-hand experiences of hospital life since the 1920s, the privations of wartime and the early NHS, hopes for new medications and conflicting views surrounding the closure of St Andrew's and the delivery of community mental health care.STEVEN CHERRY is senior lecturer in history, Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, University of East Anglia. ... Product Description
This book presents themes such as fuel cell electro-catalysis and membrane development as well as durability of fuel cell components. It presents varying results and views on a fundamentally interesting method, broad-band dielectric spectroscopy, of particular interest because of the high potential for insight arising from the method on the one hand coupled to radically different interpretations of data in the literature. In short, the debate is over matters of interpretation of features in the data. Application of dielectric spectroscopy to the study of polymers has a long history. However, polymeric electrolytes with substantial conductivity present significant problems for traditional measurement techniques using low surface area electrodes. Significant interfacial polarization can arise in such cases, leading to spectral features that are spurious. ... Read more

Product Description
The Novikov conjecture is the single most important unsolved problem in the topology of high-dimensional non-simply connected manifolds. These two volumes give a snapshot of the status of work on the Novikov conjecture and related topics from many points of view: geometric topology, homotopy theory, algebra, geometry, and analysis. Volume 1 contains a detailed historical survey and bibliography of the Novikov conjecture and of related subsequent developments, including an annotated reprint (both in the original Russian and in English translation) of Novikov's original 1970 statement of his conjecture; an annotated problem list; the texts of several important unpublished classic papers by Milnor, Browder, and Kasparov; and research/survey papers on the Novikov conjecture by Ferry/Weinberger, Gromov, Mishchenko, Quinn, Ranicki, and Rosenberg.Volume 2 contains fundamental long research papers by G. Carlsson on "Bounded K-theory and the assembly map in algebraic K-theory" and by S. Ferry and E. Pedersen on "Epsilon surgery theory"; and shorter research and survey papers on various topics related to the Novikov conjecture, by Bekka, Cherix, Valette, Eichhorn, and others. These volumes will appeal to researchers interested in learning more about this intriguing area. ... Read more
