Written for All..
A wonderful biography about an amazingly inspiring Christian leader.Well written, easy on the eye, fast moving, with the author's deep understanding of the reference point:the day that Lee lived in.

This book is for young and old, alike.Over the years, I have had to purchase a number of copies as I have given out mine, repeatedly, to family and friends alike.It is personally inspiring as a man, is useful for the development of men, as well as a great read for women, in particular, young girls who may learn what to look for in a man.

what a great book!
This is an inspiring, ennobling read.I have been deeply impacted by the Christian character of this incredible man through this account.This book has short, digestable chapters and is one I would recommend for junior high students and up.Young men, especially, need to see the manly courage, self-control, and gracious character of this leader through these pages.A must-read!!

A Christ-like Character
I loaned this book to a well-read friend, who was a yankee and no particular scholar on the Late Unpleasantness.Upon giving it back to me, he remarked, "Wow; I've never read of a more Christ-like character, apart from the Savior Himself."

This book is somewhat panegyrical, but the character of Robert E. Lee deserves such treatment. I've read much on the man, and other presentations are similar.It should be kept in mind that the Leaders in Action series, of which this book is one example, is meant to be inspirational in nature.

My only serious critique of this book is common to all of the books in the series of which I am familiar: the book is somewhat artificially separated into two parts, the first of which is historical/chronological, and the second of which is categorized according to specific virtues.I would prefer the entire book be organized according to the former.

Steven Woodworth's previous book, the critically acclaimed Jefferson Davis and His Generals, won the prestigious Fletcher Pratt Award and was a main selection of the History Book Club. In that book he showed how the failures of Davis and his military leaders in the west paved the way for Confederate defeat. In Davis and Lee at War, he concludes his study of Davis as rebel commander-in-chief and shows how the lack of a unified purpose and strategy in the east sealed the Confederacy's fate.

Woodworth argues that Davis and Robert E. Lee, the South's greatest military leader, had sharply conflicting views over the proper conduct of the war. Davis was convinced that the South should fight a defensive war, to simply outlast the North's political and popular support for the war. By contrast, Lee and the other eastern generals--notably P.G.T. Beauregard, Gustavus Smith, and Stonewall Jackson--were eager for the offensive. They were convinced that only quick and decisive battlefield victories would prevent the North from eventually defeating them with its overwhelming advantage in men and materials.

Davis and Lee, Woodworth shows, shared a mutual respect for each other for most of the war. But it was respect mixed with a stubborn resistance to the other's influence. The result of this tense tug-of-war was Davis's misguided pursuit of a middle ground that gave neither strategy its best chance for success. The war finally ground to a bloody conclusion with Davis as indecisive as ever and virtually blind to how little confidence his generals had in his leadership.

Drawing extensively upon the papers of Jefferson Davis and the works of leading Civil War historians, Woodworth places the eastern military campaigns in an entirely new light and expands our understanding of Davis as leader of the Confederacy.

Some hits, some misses
Woodworth, who previously looked at Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his generals in the Western Theater, turns his attention to Davis and his Eastern generals.The title is a bit misleading as while the bulk of the book does center on Davis and Robert E. Lee, the first 150 pages or so deal more with Davis' relationships with Joseph E. Johnson and P.G.T. Beauregard.In the end, Woodworth has crafted a highly readable book that is equally interesting and infuriating.The book is interesting because Woodworth has some new interpretations and posits a clear thesis--namely, Davis and Lee got along mainly because Lee kept Davis "in the loop."This seems a tad bit simple, but sometimes simple answers are the right ones.In this case, one comes away believing that Woodworth has proved his thesis, but also feeling that the author has cherry-picked some of his evidence and came into the work with extreme biases.

Fortunately for Woodworth, the main strength of the book is the discussion and description of the working partnership of Lee and Davis.While in hindsight it might appear that the two could obviously get along if for nothing else than Lee's military prowess, Woodworth does well to remind readers that in the first year or so of the war, Lee was actually not a very popular figure in the South.In fact, many Richmond newspapers mocked and ridiculed him, labeling him "Granny Lee" for a disastrous campaign he oversaw in what is now West Virginia.However, Woodworth shows that Davis never lost faith in Lee and when Johnston was wounded, Lee was immediately given command of what would become the Army of Northern Virginia.From there, the book picks up considerable steam.Woodworth argues that Davis did not agree with Lee's proposed offensive tactics, but deferred to his trusted general from the outset.Woodworth argues that this is due in large part to the fact that Lee was willing to share his plans with Davis, ask for Davis' counsel, and treat Davis with respect.This was in direct contrast to Johnston and Beauregard, who both often kept Davis in the dark as to their plans, felt Davis was stepping on their toes, and often treated Davis with contempt.According to Woodworth, what ended up happening is Davis took his respect for Lee's intellect and appreciation of Lee's personality and turned that into unbridled confidence in his generalship.Due to this, Davis set aside his own strategy (more defensive) in favor of Lee's bold tactics.

With regard to his analysis of Davis and Lee's relationship, there is not a lot to quarrel with Woodworth over.He seems to treat Lee as somewhat infallible, but he is not the first, or last, Civil War historian to do that.It does seem, however, that Woodworth is a big fan of both Davis and Lee and this brings up the most serious criticism of the book.It is obvious from reading this book that Woodworth has some severe biases at work.All historians and writers in general for that matter, have biases.However, most of them do a good job of hiding them.Woodworth, on the other hand, smacks you over the head with them.This would not be a problem except it leads him to stretch his evidence.Woodworth obviously dislikes both Johnston and Beauregard and this leads to issues in the book.First and foremost, Woodworth paints Johnston as some sort of archvillian.While Woodworth does a good job of pointing out Johnston's faults, he leaves Davis to look as if he played no role in the two's animosity toward each other.The even bigger issue, though, is that Woodworth misses the obvious point that Johnston and Davis agreed on strategy.Despite this, Woodworth argues Davis would have been better off ditching Johnston at the beginning of the war because Johnston lacked the moral courage to fight.While Johnston was notorious for his retreats and slow movements, this seems like a stretch on Woodworth's part.To me, the Davis-Johnston relationship does as much to show Davis' faults as it does Johnston's.Davis was unwilling to work with Johnston, despite their agreement on strategy, simply due to the fact that he did not like him.The other problem in the beginning of the book is that Woodworth jumps back and forth playing the blame game.When Johnston and Davis briefly were getting along after First Manassas, Beauregard is painted as the bad guy.When Beauregard and Davis are getting along, suddenly Johnston is the bad egg.Finally, Woodworth also has a disdain for James Longstreet, who he introduces as basically stupid, which borders on irrationality.Whatever your personal take is on Longstreet, to introduce him as stupid just seems a bit much.Taken individually these are not real problems, but considering Woodworth does this throughout much of the book, his injection of his biases really drags the book down.

Woodworth is not uncritical of Davis, but this book, when put side-by-side with his previous work, seems somewhat out of place.While his previous work essentially blamed Davis for losing the war in the West due to his personal character flaws, this work states that Davis had the right strategy and rose above some of his petty personal flaws once Lee took command.Instead, it is more obvious, thanks to Woodworth's work, that Davis did not rise above anything.Lee was willing to tell Davis what he wanted to hear and not clash with the President.Thus, the two got along swimmingly despite having differing strategic ideas.All the while, Davis still clashed with other military and political leaders because of the very personality flaws Woodworth claims he rose above with Lee.It leaves one feeling as if you got half the story, but Woodworth covered up some of the rest so as to paint Davis and Lee in a better light.

Still, Woodworth deserves credit for this venture.It gives an excellent look at the Confederate President and his dealings with his generals in the Eastern Theater.It is chock full of detail and contains many primary sources.That being said, the flaws of the book mean it is surely not the last word on this subject and could be improved upon.Still, it is an excellent place to start and gives an interesting comparison to Davis and his generals and Abraham Lincoln and his.

One of the best books on war time leadership
I found this book to be one of the best books about command decisions and relationships between Politicians and generals during the Civil War I have ever read. It covers the battles and the leaders of the Confederacy, both great and flawed. I found it hard to believe that some Southern leaders/generals fought harder against their own side in stupid little infights and disputes. The book goes a long way in explaining Lee's strategy and that of Davis and how they were different and the results of that difference. This book concentrates on the Eastern Theatre, the author's other book 'Jefferson Davis and his Generals' covers the Western Theatre of operations and is brillant in its examination of this area. Excellent twist on being a more effective hypnotist
I enjoyed this book immensely. Although much of what's written came to me as common sense, I needed an underscoring of what I and most of us already know--that to be effective we need to work on replacing a client's negative metaphor with another positive one. That makes so much sense to me. The only complaint I have (hence the 4 star rating) is the fact that I have the 8th edition, which was printed in 2009, and amazingly there are still numerous typos and grammatical errors. Why haven't any of these errors been caught yet? Hopefully, in the next printing, the publisher will do this fine author a favor and correct these needless flaws so that at least those of us who value the English language can put all our energy on the book's immensely helpful content.

What hypnosis really is
This book will easily explain what hypnosis really is and how it works. the author, Dr Steven Heller, was a hypnotherapist referred to by his peers as "The Wizard".

if you aren't sure about hypnosis, you're in for some surprises. we slip in and out of hypnotic states naturally everyday. it's easy for us. once you know, you can start intentionally using it. just one example, hearing and unselfishly listening and paying attention to someone tends to put them in a hypnotic state. it's that easy. self hypnosis is alot easier.

I Love this book and have read it numerous times...
As a Master NLP Practitioner and Advanced Hypnotherapist I view this book by Steven Heller as a classic.I read it every so often as it reinforces things I already know and assists me in expanding my creativity when working with people.I find it very hard to put into words exactly why I treasure this book so much.But I certainly do treasure it.

It never fails to inspire me, throw new light on whatever I am thinking about at the time.It gives me creative ideas regarding whomever I am working with no matter what the issues are with which they are wrestling.It seems to put my thoughts on a little higher plane and allows me to take small leaps into new thinking.

It puts me in the perfect frame of mind to be wide open to ideas and concepts so that I don't get stuck in any one mode. I often pick it up and randomly open it and just begin reading for a few minutes.

After reading this book for the first time, I found myself searching the web for other books by this wonderful author.It appears that he had died some time ago and only left this ONE book!I was so disappointed!If any of you know of ANYTHING he has written...even some mimeographed item or random notes, etc.I would love to have you contact me and PLEASE let me know where I can find it.

There is rarely a book that has been so helpful, interesting and powerful...and such a small, incredible book.If you work with people, do hypnosis, NLP or anything involving these areas that deal with thoughts and the human mind, run out and get this book.You will probably find it excellent as I did, I suspect.

Appropriate Title
Well written, to the point! Great for therapists, but the lay person can understand the points presented! Our unresourceful patterns are just that Monsters... all we need are the Magical 'Sticks' to chase away the Monsters!

Very interesting.
Helped introduce me to covert hypnosis ideas.I bought the book for self defense against con-artists because I'd recently been taken advantage of by folks using covert hypnosis techniques.I think learning about this stuff is a great way to protect your self from hypnotic con artists from L. Ron Hubbard to Karl Rove to Goebbels to a small time crook to Neo-Con radio broadcasts to just about anything that uses these ideas.Read this book for self defence of the mind alone.

On another note the therapy it speaks of does seem very useful if used to help.The doctor had better be a good one.This author and Milton Erickson seemed like decent men.In the wrong hands this stuff could screw you up.

On even another note reflecting on the ideas of constant self hypnosis has been probably been the best aspect of the book.Knowing when you are conditioning yourself has been very helpful. ... Read more

I'm not a major fan of art books, but this one is no regular art book. The clean layout makes for a sophisticated yet browse-able book. The range of styles represents the diversity of support garnered by our President. The book reflects the emotion, passion, and soul of the campaign. Beautiful.

An exquisite testament to a historic campaign...
This wonderful book is both a important testament to & a beautiful celebration of Obama's momentous election. Showcasing art by artists from all over the globe, "Design For Obama" is literally & figuratively a work of art in & of itself. Taschen really did an exquisite job on the printing, the coloring, the paper-stock, the layout, et al. The heft of the book is only surpassed by its beauty.

Excellent
One of the best books about poker tournament I've ever read. Good mathematical analysis (the concept of equilibrium play is essential) and practical tips you can just apply without thinking too much.

My NL bible
I am a winning Razz player and play on Full Tilt(john21703).But this is my goto NL bible.It helped me win over $800 in cash and prizes in the local S-N-B poker league in the last two months alone (2 local wins, 2nd in regionals, 8th in nationals).I wish I understood every concept in the book, but this isn't a one read type of buy.So get your highlighter and be prepared to win some real money.If I could only recommend one book besides Ace on the River, it would be this one.I think about this book more at the tables than any other one.If you don't know the concepts in this book, be assured someone else at your table does.

I purchased this book for my husband along with "Kill Bill".He thinks both are great.

One of the best tournament books
I bought this book because I had trouble understanding how many people are playing in the big MTTs nowadays. I had read the first two Harrington books on tournament play, but I felt like the game had changed a lot since the days those books came out. I was puzzled about the way many players were winning lots of chips with mediocre holdigs. This book helped me to understand better what was going on in the tables. I can't say that I've become a better player, but I hope that when these concepts sink in I can start to gain some success in the tables.

The book has lots of interesting topics like stealing from UTG, calling early raises in position with suited connectors and pushing short stacked with seemingly bad cards. Theories are backed with mathematical equations. In the first reading these things were a little too hard to get a grip, but more studying is required and hopefully these things fall into place too. It's also good idea to read about the tournament play after several years of Harrington's books, because those techniques are so common and everyone knows them so they are losing their power. It doesn't mean they're obsolete but just a little too common and well known that something else might work better at the moment.

To me the last part of the book, which is about short handed cash games, is unnecessary. I don't understand why the authors have added that obviously too short section on complex matter which deserves its own book.

So if you're playing tournaments and want to develop your skills to more advanced levels you need to know these things. After reading the Harrington books this is a good supplement, because this is newer and goes beyound the basics. I recommed this to everyone playing NLHE tournaments. However, in order to better understand these ideas, it would be good to have some kind of basic understanding of tournament play. Maybe not the first book you should read about MTTs.

A new type of Zombie material
I was very surprised to find out how enjoyable it was to read 2 page stories. Each seemed to have been taken from a really great scene of a Romero movie that I must have missed.
An entirely new type of read, not novel, novella or short story, but a very short story. Really entertaining.

A fun read
The stories are so quick it can almost be frustrating but then its nice to move on to yet another story. you want to keep turning the page because the next story is only a minute away. Some of the stories are average but there a few that are really good, it takes skill to write a 2 page story and have the reader remember it.
a fun read and worth the time. If you love zombies then this needs to be a part of your collection.

Tidbits and pieces of bloody goodness
Lots of little stories here.If you were looking for anything that goes beyond the 5 minute reading span look elsewhere.This is the undead for those with ADD and can be read in its entirety in about an hour or two at most.
Some of these stories are not exceptional but there are a few that are quite memorable.Just a little twist, usually subtle that make you blink in surprise but not much else because before it sinks in it is time to move on to the next juicy morsel.
Entertaining and quick, this is a great little zombie snack for those who want something easy and quick to digest.

USA: The New Barbarians
The title for this book could've easily been "Shock and Awe: The New Barbarians".

Be warned this is no coffee table book. From a Belgian photographer, it shows dramatic photos of Baghdad before the American annexation, and later, of dozens of civilians wounded or killed by American cluster bombs and American "intelligent" missiles at the time of air raids on Baghdad.

But for the difference in intensity due to weapons technical development, there's substantially no difference between the London bombings by the German Luftwaffe in WWII and the American destruction of large parts of Baghdad onoccasion of "Shock And Awe" in 2003 as it is clearly depicted in this book.

After all this, Americans ought to substitute the stars in their national flag with swastikas. After all, the German people elected Hitler to power, and the American people did the same with George W. Bush. Twice. Will he end the same way Hitler did? This is an excellent, first class book. AWESOME
BearWalker is a great book with a ton of potential.As I read the book I kept thinking, this is gonna be a hit TV series some day. It has everything:government conspiracy, mysticism, betrayal...the works! His use of Native American myth, and his great development of Paul Dillinger(my personal favorite in the book) just left me wishing the book was 500 pages and not 150.I hope he writes more in this line!

Mesmerizing and Captivating: for Barker and Gaiman Fans
From what I've read, this was Steven Climer's first book.After reading it I now see why he won so many awards and honorable mentions.He set the bar pretty high for himself.

Dream Thieves sucks you in innocuously until you're tangled in the horrors of a man who can't dream.The imagery and surrealness put Climer right up there with Barker and Gaiman.

Sure to entice younger readers
Curses are rough things to spend eternity with. "Once Upon a Halloween Night" is the story of Vernon Boggs, a man cursed to experience the rest of his existence on his family's land. A young witch named Lucy however, can help break his curse. Lucy isn't free of her own problems, and through the companionship of witch and ghost, the two must face the problems that affect their lives and unlives.
