recommended, but with reservations
Warren Buckland's "Directed by Steven Spielberg" is a welcome addition to the growing shelf of books that take a serious look at the films of Spielberg.His approach is to do a deep analysis of Spielberg's visual style, and he comes up with some fascinating results.It's no news to me that Spielberg's movies are way smarter than a lot of people tend to assume, but Buckland makes a good case for "Jurassic Park," which I'd previously considered to be one of the lesser movies in his career.Buckland is similarly insightful on the subjects of the rest of the movies he covers.

However, I have reservations about certain aspects of the book.For one thing, it's a dry, dry, dry read.This is acdemic writing, and frankly, academics don't know how to write nine times out of ten.Buckland is great at analysis; he's less good at presenting his analysis.Therefore, unless you're a pretty serious Spielberg fan (or a serious film-school student), you're likely to have a hard time making it through some sections of this book.

Secondly, Buckland's concentration on Spielberg's visuals lapses in certain places.Whenever he begins discussing elements of Spielberg's films that he doesn't like, Buckland almost immediately shifts away from visual analysis and toward more traditional criticisms of plot and character, etc.These are quite possibly valid critical arguments, but they are a betrayal of Buckland's intent in writing the book.And quite frankly, a visual analysis of some of these sections might have been useful, even revelatory.

Another issue is with Buckland's analysis of "Poltergeist."He takes a statistical analysis -- a fascinating one, in fact -- of the movie in order to determine who "really" directed the movie.(If you weren't aware, it has long been a Hollywood controversy over whether credited director Tobe Hooper was in fact just a patsy for Spielberg, who has been rumored to have actually done most of the directing himself.)Buckland's findings, surprising even to himself, is that while Spielberg obviously wielded some influence, Hooper was also extremely active in the movie's visuals.This is great stuff, but it seems to settle the controversy in favor of Hooper, and fails utterly to take into account the fact that Spielberg wrote the film (he's credited with "story by," but did an uncredited full rewrite of the final draft of the screenplay).Whether or not he physically directed it, it's a Spielberg movie.To be fair, this is a problem with film criticism at large; the writer of the film is often ignored, and ought not be.

Finally, at the end, there are short analyses of several Spielberg movies not covered in full.One of these is "A.I.," and Buckland opts not to approach the movie's visuals at all.Instead, he offers up the analysis that the majority of the movie is a dream sequence from the point of view of the sick child, sleeping within the cryogenic chamber.This analysis is so poor, so entirely off-base, that it's hard to believe I'm supposed to take it seriously.It's so wrong-headed, in fact, that it calls Buckland's overall credibility somewhat into question.This is a problem coming at the end of an otherwise solid book.

Don't let these problems put you off from buying it if you're a serious Spielberg fan, though.There is a lot to like and appreciate here. ... Read more

University leadership
It took me a while to get to it (the book was published almost a decade ago), but this may well be the best book on leadership that I've ever read (and I've read quite a few). The advice is not simply intuitive -- in fact, it is often counterintuitive (think grey, see double, never completely trust an expert, never make a decision that can be made by a subordinate, reading a classic book may be more valuable than reading the daily news, etc). The examples are real (vs the fictional story format that was popularized by the "One Minute Manager" series and now is pervasive in the leadership literature), and it is a pleasure to read. I only wish I had the pleasure of sitting in on his leadership class!

An excellent work that is very practical and affirming when it comes to the style of a successful leader.

Refreshing look at Doing Leadership
Sample's book is a fresh piece in the genre of leadership material. So far, I've enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it. My sense is that this style (brand) of leadership is more fruitful/effective in running a non-profit. I believe the principles will transfer to the corporate world as well and that would prove an interesting study.

One of the best books on leadership I've read in years
This is one of the best books on leadership I've read in a long time. It explains several of President Sample's decisions at USC, even a couple of the more weaselly ones. But despite some of his "weaselly-ways" (i.e. the book does have a chapter on not making a decision unless you have to), it is a powerhouse of common sense from a man who has taken the University of Southern California to new heights, if such a thing were even possible. Good but not complete
This was the book I used to study for my last test for my MCITP certification. I used the Sybex books to study and along with the 70-443 book this book covered about 60% of the test. The book only covered the very basic and should have been more in depth for SSIS and Reporting Services.

WAY TO HARD TO GET!
If you see it on stock, you must buy it! Believe me, these are too expensive and too exclusive.

Not As good as the others
I read the original Street fighter series (3 comic books) Udon published and was very pleases. This book however is amateur at best. Considering Udon usually draws very good the drawing in this book are awful. They even shoveled in some artists that didn't draw the original comic. The result is that the art varies in style every 2 or 3 pages and looks bad. The story is just a couple of things taken from the actual games (like the SF2 fight between Ryu and Sagat) so you won't be surprised. Sorry but I can't recommend this book.

Vol 4 is just ok, lousy at times.
Volume 4 is just ok.It is lousy at times.Some of the artwork is similar to that of Vol 1 to 3, but some of the artwork is weird and wacky, and although it is nice as an artform, it takes away from the story itself.The writing is the same as the other volumes since it is the same author/writer.The stories in here are 2 to 4 pages in length, very short.There are a lot of short stories. It kind of fills in the gaps, but in a lousy very quick way.The stories could have been longer.The art bothered me and so did the stories.I was happy with my Vol 1, 2, and 3 purchases, but I wish I could return this for a refund.

GREAT FOR STREET FIGHTER FANS!
This is a great graphic novel for all who love graphic novels and for Street Fighter fans especially.This one really sums up the last 3 novels in short detail, but has some new revealing information regarding the characters backgrounds.Cant wait for the next volume!

Transcription of Robbins lectures lack some depth
The book is the transcription of the lectures Lionel Robbins gave in the London School of Economics during 1979 on the History of Economic Thought. The material covered goes from Plato to Fisher (very few developments from the 20th century are included). Since the book is verbatim transcripts of the lectures, there is not much depth here. Therefore, a conventional book by Robbins on the subject would have been preferred (that he knew the subject, there can be no questions of). Also, the coverage varies: there is ample stuff on Smith and the early mercantilists, but the material on Marx and Walras, for example, is frustratingly short. Still, for those starting in the subject, this is an OK read.

A quick walk through the history of Economics.
This series of lectures sheds light on the major contributors to Economic thought since Plato and Aristotle. Since the book is made up of transcripts of his lectures, he doesn't manage to cover the figures or the ideas in depth. However he does manage to give some guidelines as to what you should read if you want to be well informed on the history of Economic thought.

I did not find the language in it frustrating, it just made the book seem like a personal lecture with Robbins (minus the questions) which added to my enjoyment. He stops at Fisher, so if you were hoping for ideas and icons after that, you will be disappointed.

The book is split into five sections. The first deals with those philosophers that preceded the formal study of economics; Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas etc... Very interesting stuff, especially if you aren't familiar with the relationship between the ancients and economics.

The second to the fourth sections deal with famous economists, from Adam Smith to Karl Marx. His treatment of Marx is brief so don't expect anything more than a few pages. While he goes into some length about Adam Smith and the other classical economists.

Finally he lectures on Jevons, Menger and others of the "Marginal Revolution", ending his series of lectures with Fisher.

A good read, I would recommend it to undergraduates in Economics or any one else who is interested in the history of economic ideas.

This is a collection of lectures given at the LSE.So DON'T think it is a history.Nevertheless, it is a comprehensive journey from aristotle's economica thru the modern era.Good as a reference.Not bad as a read -- but be aware you are reading a transcribed lecture and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Outstanding summary of economic thought!
A well-organized and well-considered series of concise lectures are codified in this book.This is a substantial, but not overwhelming, chronology of the more influential contributors to economic history and thought.

Magisterial, fair, but not the best way
Make no mistake: Robbins knows his stuff, he's fair, correct, and surprisingly open-minded.However, this is a transcription of lectures, and the syntax is contorted.He interrupts the flow of every other sentence to insert some qualifier or oral footnote, and the effect can be maddening.This is too much to read for the depth of treatment you will actually get.If you do read it, you will get a pretty swell reading list, but the material is definitely weighted in favor of antiquarian literature and ancient disputes. I personally found it a pleasant read, because I like old books and economics, and I felt a certain affection for the grand old man, but unless you share these tastes, you're bound to be frustrated ... Okay, but not original or comprehensive
While this version is nice for Kindle users, the introduction doesn't add to information that is already widely available elsewhere, especially the rundown on events that supposedly inspired Brandeis and Warren to write their famous essay.Yes, as Childress repeats after others, there is no basis for the legend that the piece was fueled by Warren's dismay over newspaper coverage of his daughter's wedding, but the problem with that false story is not just that Warren's daughter was far too young to be married in 1890, but that we misunderstand the themes sounded in "The Right to Privacy" if we try to tie them to narrow factors such as incidents in its authors' lives or their personal attributes.

As Warren and Brandeis stress throughout the article, calls for increased protections of private life were familiar fixtures in late 19th century social, political, and legal discourse.In line with this historical reality, the authors describe themselves as responding to a widely felt sense of vulnerability that emerged with the invention of photography and the rise of the popular press.

The other flaw in this edition is no fault of the author, but is due instead to the severe limitations of the Kindle as a platform for the presentation of historical documents, especially in this case.As a stand-alone text, "The Right to Privacy" is already available in numerous venues such as faculty websites and Google Books.The Kindle version is just one more wall of words that fails to take advantage of our capacity to link historical documents to multimedia evidence.While this mode of delivery is great for fiction, it doesn't work as a platform for historical materials, especially in this instance, that is, a text that emerged in response to advances in photography, lithography, newspaper illustration, and the vast expansion of newspaper circulation that came with the development of the telegraph and the rotary printing press. Likewise, while digital presentation now makes it easy to link Brandeis and Warren's essay to all of the legal cases and newspaper articles mentioned in the "Right to Privacy," the Kindle delivers it as one more silo, devoid of visual interest and disconnected from its historical context.

To end on a positive note, Childress writes in a refreshing style that is a relief from the heavy-going of too many legal texts, and my criticism is mainly directed at the Kindle, which encourages too much re-publication of works that are already available for free, without promoting innovative use of digital technologies or new insight.Since Childress writes so well, it would be nice to see his work in a richer environment such as the iPad, which would enable him to include multimedia materials and supporting documents.

Easily the most cogent and readable work I've found on the subject.

Okay, but Way Dated now...
It was good at the time, but now it is pretty dated, wouldn't recommend it for current VMware users.Unfortunate, because I don't think there's a comparable good VMware book out there now.

Excellent Product!
Finally -a product that allows for simultaneous booting of several operating systems.

Iam absolutely very happy about this product. Not only does it allow me to do application software testing efficiently, but also allows me to practice for my Networking / MCP, MCSA certifications.

Now I won't have to build any more PCs - I can have a virtual laboratory using one PC.

Nice guide for VMWare Workstation
We are using this as our textbook in the operating systems class I am currently taking although it's a user guide and not a textbook.VMWare is not that difficult and if you are computer literate, you won't need this.If you do want / need a VMWare reference, this is definitely the one to have.
