3-0 out of 5 stars FOUR STARS
Our favorite Henry and Mudge is "the Funny Lunch".This is the first one we ever read, and it got us hooked on Cynthia Rylant. It's funny and enjoyable.Normal little boy, normal St. Bernard, a slightly flaky dad, but grand entertainment for the early-reader set.

*** update -- I meant to click four stars, and Amazon will not let me change it.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series of books
Henry And Mudge and the Tall Tree House (Ready-to-Read. Level 2)
These books are great. Short, sweet, lovable. Understandable for a 4 year old and fun for the adult who is reading with him. Mudge is a real type dog who does doggy things, and loves his boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEPHEW& SON LOVED THESE BOOKS
My nephew Wyatt Condon who is now 9 loved these books when he was in second grade. Now my youngest son Ramon who is 7 and in the second grade now loves them. He loves the stories, the illustrations and they are easy to read but not too babyish for children in 1st to 2nd grade. Henry and Mudge books are loved and enjoyed by both of these cousins.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book for aBeginning Reader!
My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Snow Day Afternoon
This book features kid-friendly (bright and not too cluttered) illustrations and softly humorous text. Each of the 40 pages (divided into three short chapters) has pictures and just a few sentences, making this a great beginning reader's book or a fun story for adults to read out loud.

4-0 out of 5 stars We love Henry and Mudge!
Henry and Mudge continue to be some of our favorite book characters. My daughter, age 3, especially loves this wonderful book series, although my son, now 7, seems to be growing out of them just a bit._Henry and Mudge and the Wild Wind_ is not our favorite Henry and Mudge book by any means (we like most the first four, dealing with the seasons of the year), but it fits the familiar format.Henry and Mudge find themselves outside when a summer storm approaches, and beat it for home, since both are a bit afraid of thunderstorms. At home, Mom and Dad make the home safe and cosy by closing windows and making hot chocolate.Although Henry is cajoled into playing a fun pretend game with Dad (a little too war-like for my tastes, though), Mudge can't quite be convinced that thunder isn't scary, but it all comes out OK in the end as they venture out in the fresh clean air after the rainstorm has passed.Although I can understand the book's attempt at making possibly scary things like thunderstorms less scary by showing children that others are afraid also, why put that thought in their heads at all?I'd rather my children enjoy Nature in all her aspects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun early reader or read-aloud selection
This is a favorite of my family, among many excellent Henry and Mudge books.Cynthia Rylant is both funny and poetic, and illustrator Sucie Stevenson is the perfect complement with her wistful watercolor illustrations.Henry's rescue of Mudge from "the enemy couch" is always met with giggles from my daughters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mudge is a must!
Henry and his dog,Mudge must overcome their fears of a summer thunder storm. Henry tries to calm himself by whistling. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful easy reader -parents will enjoy it, too.
Henry and Mudge books are some of the best books available to beginning readers, and parents would be hard-pressed not to enjoy them as well. While a few of the books in the series show Henry's idyllically happy parents in a way that might make children from less traditional families sad or "homesick" for that situation, this particular book is purely about a little boy, his big dog, their imaginations, and being a kid in the summer.Cynthia Rylant's writing is fun yet poetic, and Sucie Stevenson's illustrations are charming as always.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summer adventures with H&M!
Henry and Mudge are the best of friends. It doesn't matter at all that one of them walks on four legs and drools a lot!!

In this third book in the H&M series, summertime has arrived with adventures galore for boy & dog.Divided into chapters, each functioning as a mini story but related to each other, Henry and his 180-pound dog Mudge explore the wide, green world of summer. In one of the most notable chapters, a bee stings Henry, and boy does it HURT!!Fortunately, good ol' Mudge is there to make Henry feel better (a good face-licking by Mudge helps Henry forget his pain at being stung-Mudge likes the salty taste of tears).

As a teacher I love the H&M series because the illustrations are always bright, vibrant and immediately draw my students into the story.I also love the short, easy sentences, which are perfect for beginning-to-intermediate readers who feel that they're ready to tackle chapter books. As a parent, I love the way that this series is about the small adventures in life that are right on the level of the reader.Nothing blows up, aliens don't invade the countryside sucking out peoples' innards, and the world isn't narrowly saved from oblivion.Mudge is a wonderfully realistic dog that is completely devoted to Henry, like most real dogs are devoted to the children they live with.

As of this writing, there are some 20 H&M books, each a small treasure and each a wonderful read.Though they're numbered, it's not at all necessary to begin with #1 and progress up to #20; readers can grab whichever title catches their whim and follow along with the adventures.I myself have read them all and am not so patiently waiting for the next ones to come out. Each book comes highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good practice for beginning readers
I've used different sets of books in helping my now 5-year-old daughter learn to read. This series "Puppy Mudge" was one of the early books that we used back when she was four and which we still use for practice. The books in this Ready-To-Read series are categorized into 4 levels:
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently

At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging, though perhaps not as adorable as Biscuit (created by Alyssa Satin Capucilli). Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. Here the words are "mud", "tub", and "clean". These books are suited for children ages 4-6. I would also recommend the Biscuit books, i.e. Biscuit's New Trick (My First I Can Read),Biscuit Wants to Play (My First I Can Read), Bathtime for Biscuit (My First I Can Read).

2-0 out of 5 stars Junk food extravaganza
Like so many kids books, this one shows pancakes, suckers, bubble gum, taffy, little crackers, cake, ice cream, potato chips - repeatedly.

We avoid commercial TV and its brainwashing effects on what we eat... Wwhat a disappointment when our favorite characters to advertise this junk to us - no thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Series for the Only Child
This long and growing series is terrific for all kids, but especially only children.Although Henry has no siblings and his best friends are his dog Mudge and his cousin Annie (also an only, apparently in a one-parent household), with the exception of the first book, the series does not dwell on his sibling-free status. It simply presents a well-adjusted kid enjoying a wide range activities.Henry is constructive with his time (but not so much as to be unrealistic; see "Henry and Mudge and the Long Weekend"), sociable, not prone to loneliness and never portrayed as pining for a little brother or sister. As the parent of an "only", I find the whole series great for subtly conveying an affirmative message without beating it over the head.
To be sure, Henry's is a somewhat idealized, white-kid, small-town life and the books are not entirely p.c. - the illustrations of the family car never seem to picture seat belts and Henry's diet apparently includes lots of hot dogs, potato chips and refined sugar. But as part of a wider reading program, Henry and Mudge provide a great series of simple chapter books to be read to youngsters or read by beginning readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read to your Kids!
What can I say about the Henry And Mudge series? What can't I say about it? It's wonderful, delightful, sweet, and gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling when reading it aloud to your kids! I have read all of the books to my son when he was little and we both loved them. Mudge is big and lovabale and Henry is smart and kind and his parents give him good morals and values to live by. It's very funny and I would recommend this series (which are well into the 20's) for people with children between the ages of 3-5. I do have to say though, that I like the books that are illustrated by Sucie Stevenson the best. She draws Mudge with a much gentler expression to his face. 5-0 out of 5 stars WE LOVE HENRY AND MUDGE!!
We love the Henry and Mudge series. My 5 year old raided all the books out of my classroom and in order for me to have peace (and teach my first graders to read) I had to buy him his own set. My only complaint is that there isn't a Mudge toy. He was dying for a Mudge this Easter so I scoured and scoured and finally found a Steiff bulldog puppy (mohair so wasn't cheap, as if any Steiff is ever cheap!!!) in a lying down play position (yes I know it's a bulldog but the Steiff toy looks like puppy Mudge from the books!) that would work. He LOVES the toy and carries it everywhere.

Cynthia...please consider letting toy companies make a Mudge toy. We found our Mudgie but I'm sure others would like one too and Steiff are SOOOOOOOOOOO expensive!!

5-0 out of 5 stars So funny!
By Stephanie

Henry and Mudge were at home eating farm fresh eggs, and they had farm fresh blueberries. Mudge and Henry were excited because they were going to visit a real farm. They passed fields, barns, tractors, and haystacks. When the chase happened, the goose said, "Honk! Honk! Honk!" Henry and Mudge were scared of the wild goose. Found out what happens!

I was in my comfortable chair reading Henry and Mudge and the Wild Goose Chase. My favorite part is when Mudge is scared of the goose. Mudge barked so loud that the goose got scared. The goose jumped three feet, and then the goose was not mean to Henry and Mudge again.

If you are looking for a great book, you should go to the library or Leadership Prep. It will be funny in the middle of the story. I loved when Mudge barked so loud that the goose jumped three feet, and he ran away from Henry and Mudge.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the cutest so far!
We are huge Henry and Mudge fans since we also have enjoyed the company of a delightful 180 lb. Mastiff (JUST like Mudge, except ours was named Jack!).We read Mudge books to our little boy every night before bed and this is a bright, happy and sunny book that we all really enjoy. I appreciate how Henry has a funcional, loving family like ours.I hope this cute series just gets bigger and bigger!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for NEW reader...K - 1st gr
The Henry and Mudge series are perfect for a "new" reader....kindergarten or 1st grade. There are about 40 pages with short chapters and some pictures. It can be read in one sitting or easily put down at the end of a chapter. It is great for boys or girls. Now that my son is a better reader, I use these books for him to read to his younger (non-reading) brothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Henry and Mudge and the Wild Goose Chase (Henry & Mudge Books (Simon & Schuster Paperback))

We have about 9 of these books. Each is a unique story, there is no formula here. They are creative stories that deal with real life situations in a special Henry and Mudge fashion. They are warm and loving and fun.Henry loves his big dog Mudge. In this story the family takes a trip to the country to buy some farm fresh eggs. An aggressive goose frightens Henry and Mudge, but Mudge has the last "word".

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great adventure with Henry and Mudge!
My 1st grader loves reading Henry and Mudge books. The charming water color and ink pictures--and the realistic kid adventures--create an engaging experience for early readers. The author does an almost magical job relaying the fears, temptations and ambitions of childhood. Also, many kids can identify with Henry's passionate love for his big dog, Mudge. Plus, this series will appeal to both boys and girls.

The series is at the 1st grade reading level. This book is a "chapter" book (not a "baby" book) with 3 Chapters, and about 40 pages of half text, half artwork. (Just to give you an idea of the reading level, the Henry and Mudge books are easier than Magic Tree House, but harder than the advanced Bob books.)

This particular book is about Henry's adventures when he visits a farm. It's got a great pro-vegetable and fruit message, and it's a cute review of farm/animal vocabulary words. At the end, there is a silly, slightly scary chase scene: Henry and Mudge get chased by a goose. (They escape, don't worry!)

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, but not as good as Henry and Mudge and the Funny Lunch
The Sneaky Crackers is about code-breaking, and it's cute. It's not nearly as funny as H/M Funny Lunch (our favorite in this series) or even Nate the Great (the original) by M. W. Sharmat.

I would recommend you try those instead. They are more interesting and funny for little readers.

Henry And Mudge And The Sneaky Crackers
All of the Henry and Mudge books are great. They are sweet and fun. Great for a 4 year old and the parents too. I feel all warm and fuzzy after reading any of this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEPHEW LOVED THIS ONE TOO
I bought a bunch of these for my 9 year old nephew who was 7 and he loved them. This one he really liked. He enjoyed reading about the adventures of Henry and Mudge. These books are fun, enjoyable, entertaining, and easy to read. I've read some myself and my son Ramon who is now in second grade loves them too. His cousin loves them as a second grader now he loves them. These are great starter books to help kids on their way to reading. They really motivate kids to read because of the funny, and entertaining stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable and fun!
Henry buys a spy kit. He and his dog, Mudge, canvas the neighborhood to "flirt with danger" and "steal secrets". One day Henry finds a secret code and is determined to crack it. Funny, adorable, irresistable Mudge is a favorite at house! He can even get my reluctantreader eager to see what happens next. Easy reading level with shortchapters gives the hesitant reader a real sense of accomplishment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy reader for children beginning to read
I've used different sets of books in helping my now 5-year-old daughter learn to read. This series "Puppy Mudge" was one of the early books that we used back when she was four and which we still use for practice. The books in this Ready-To-Read series are categorized into 4 levels:
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently

At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging. Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. These books are suited for children ages 4-6. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this series
Henry and Mudge: The First Book

We loved Henry and Mudge right from the start. Mudge is not a talking or human like dog. He is all dog. Henry's loving parents feel sad that Henry doesn't have kids to play with or a pet and they give in and get him a tiny puppy, who grows and grows into a very large slobbering dog. In this first book, Mudge gets lost. Henry is inconsolable. My boy was very upset and crying about Henry and Mudge being separated. Frankly I was pretty upset about it myself. But when Henry instinctively follows Mudges trail and hollers one last time we were relieved that Mudge was nearby and came running. We see the grief and loss from both Henry and Mudge's perspective. When my dog got lost I wondered what he might be feeling, now I know. These stories are so warm and touching. We can feel the love in this family.
They are great boy books, but girls will enjoy them too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good classic book
This is a good series for 1st graders who are looking for small adventures with a loving friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge:The First Book
My five year old has been loving Henry and Mudge for months now and we have checked every one of them out of the local library. We finally decided we just had to know how the story all began and saw a reference to The First Book.We quickly ordered it and couldn't be more pleased. The story explains the beginnings of Henry's deep attachment to Mudge. These are wonderful books. I don't know anyone we have recommended them to who hasn't fallen in love with Henry and Mudge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and sweet
My sons adore Henry and Mudge. These books are fun for them to read, and the classic "boy and his dog" characters are very endearing, particularly big, drooly Mudge. Well-written and entertaining, this series is great for kids who think they don't like to read or who have trouble reading, because they're funny and easy enough so that the child won't get bored or frustrated trying to read it. A definite must-have for any kid's bookshelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEPHEW LOVED THESE
I bought some of these Henry & Mudge books for my 9 year old nephew Buddy when he was in the second grade. I gave him one or two, he read them, and kept asking me Are you bringing anymore of Henry & Mudge. I said Yes do you like them and he said Yes. Now my youngest son Ramon who is 7 loves them. The stories and the pictures are great for children and are perfect for second graders. I would recommend them to any second grader in a HEARTBEAT. ... Read more
