Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Do you like creepy?Good, because this is creepy.
Though I haven't yet read all of Simenon's (possibly) one million novels, I can say that November is arguably the best non-Maigret book that he wrote.Simenon was a master of small-scale drama, and this book is noexception. All he gives us is a house, a daughter, mother, father, son anda maid.Of course, it wouldn't be Simenon if both the son and fatherweren't sleeping with the maid, and everyone else in the house knew it. This, of course, makes for the creepiness. This book is a good 10 on theCreepOmeter.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
This edition is written in English. However, there is a running French thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of A Fleece of Gold (Five Lessons from the Fable of Jason and the Golden Fleece). This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your French-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to “difficult, yet commonly used” English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in French, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to French-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in French or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. Product Description

Loosely structured on the greatest identity crisis ever, The French Revolution is the hilarious, tragic, and deeply imaginative story of a San Francisco family forging its place in history.

Esmerelda Van Twinkle, a failed pastry chef turned outsized copy shop manager, stumbles into motherhood after a semi-intentional liaison with good-natured coupon distributor Jasper Winslow. Born on Bastille Day, their twin children Robespierre and Marat revolt against archaic rules imposed by their autocratic grandmother, surmount radically misguided parenting, navigate factional infighting, and combat wars in the Middle East to achieve great personal gain.

But just as the family is on the cusp of achieving meteoric success in politics, business, music, and gastronomy, fissures from the past crack open spectacularly, derailing their bid for long-lived power while cementing a reputation for the ages.

Matt Stewart blends vibrant prose, unforgettable characters, and a multi-layered plot based on the extremes of the historical French Revolution for a relentlessly entertaining debut novel. Viva la révolution!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly overblown; a grandiloquent mess
Words in 'The French Revolution' are not meant to communicate ideas: only to fill space with pomp and flourish. Consider how the author spends the first five pages of his novel telling us merely that the main character is fat and is going to work. He achieves this feat through a terribly affected and cartoonish writing style that is stretched even past its own internal limits. There is no substance, only a slapdash application of adjectives and ornamentation, that one feels they are being force-fed a bowl of potpourri. The author seems to stand proudly disinterested in telling a story, and is concerned only with sharing a very long joke with himself that never arrives at a punchline.

To quote George Orwell's essay 'Politics and the English Language':

"A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: What am I trying to say? What words will express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?"

'The French Revolution's style fails starting at question one. The prose has very little to say, and is merely a vehicle for the author to show off his ersatz erudition. Question two is lost seeing as how the author spends most of his time on a sideshow flood of maximalism. Question three fails as Mr. Stewart's writing philosophy seems to be: 'If there's space for an adjective, put one in no matter what.' And as for question five--that one's right out.

An example of a good book that passes these criteria is Orwell's own '1984'. It is only a minor masterpiece, but it shows how actual good writers can communicate things of substance with originality and poetry without descending into the baroque mess that Mr. Stewart has created here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story, great book
The French Revolution holds a mirror up to society and makes us all take a look at ourselves.Matt Stewart captures food culture, San Francisco narcissism and the seditious nature of municipal politics with flair and a decidedly unique voice.Once you meet his bizarre-but-believable characters and visit the world they inhabit you won't want to leave.I couldn't put this book down and when I finished reading it I seriously considered starting at the beginning again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, memorable characters, great wordplay
The French Revolution was a lot of fun to read and I was sorry every time I had to put it down. The characters are vividly drawn and compelling. The core family of mother Esmerelda, kids Marat and Robespierre, and grandmother Fanny are totally wacky but very real. I loved Stewart's narrative style, which is exuberantly rich with details. Every little aspect of life is exploded open and celebrated. I'm recommending this book to all my friends. Oh, and you don't have to know a thing about the French Revolution to enjoy or "get" this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE FRENCH REVOLUTION: MUCH MORE FUN THAN A COLONOSCOPY
This morning, I had to experience one of the necessary thrills familiar to those of us who have recently entered our 6th decades: the routine colonoscopy. The nurses told me that rarely had they seen someone laughing with delight on their way into the procedure room. I was, of course, finishing off The French Revolution. It was a LOT better than the procedure! And funny enough to take my mind off..... well, what it is not easy to take one's mind off of. I give you this blurb:

"Takes the edge off a colonoscopy".

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and compelling fiction
The French Revolution pulled me in right from the beginning. It reads like a cross between a Tom Robbins novel and something out of the mind of Michel Gondry. The characters are memorable, the situations are wildly unpredictable and the story races along at a great pace. The undercurrent of tying characters and events to the French Revolution reminds us that the often perverse tendencies of human nature extend throughout time. ... Read more

Product Description
Christian Constant is one of the top chefs in France. At his luxurious contemporary Parisian bistro, Le Violon d'Ingres, recently awarded the coveted Michelin star, he prepares dishes that are refined and inventive, but still informed by the traditions and techniques of classic French cuisine. When he's not at the stoves at his restaurant, Constant loves cooking at home. His cuisine au quotidienne as he calls it-"everyday cooking"-focuses on fine products prepared in simple, savory ways. In his first cookbook to be published in the United States, Constant presents his personal repertoire of recipes for the home. Many of his inventive dishes are easy and quick to prepare, such as Cream of Pumpkin Soup with Croutons, Chives, and Diced Gruyere; Tomato Tart with Black Olives and Parmesan; Marinated Scallops with Lime and Dill; and Caramelized Rice Pudding Scented with Vanilla Bean. Everyday French Cooking also offers a handful of special occasion recipes, including Quick-Roasted Foie Gras with Caramelized Grapes and Roast Rack of Lamb with Spices, Figs, and Honey. The recipes are enhanced with charming full-color illustrations of their key ingredients.Amazon.com Review
Christian Constant is among France's most acclaimed chefs. His Parisian bistro deluxe, Le Violon d'Igres, has earned him Michelin guide plaudits and raves for its sophisticated yet earthy cuisine. Everyday French Cooking, Constant's first American cookbook, celebrates the bold stylishness of his cooking, providing more than 80 recipes for the likes of Cream of Lentil Soup Garnished with Bacon, Croutons, and Chives; Veal Fricassee with Basil; and Crumb-Topped Sea Bass with Sautéed Pears, Lemon Zest, and Baby Spinach Salad. Though a good percentage of the mouthwatering dishes are simple in approach, preparation for all requires attention and time that might belie their "everyday" usefulness. Cooks willing to take the plunge, however, will reward themselves with skill-expanding workouts that delight those they feed.

The book's chapters, which cover appetizers through desserts, are a concise distillation of Constant's art. It's hard to imagine a dinner party that wouldn't benefit from Vegetable Tempura with Soy-Flavored Tartar Sauce or Herb-Crusted Leg of Lamb on White Beans. If Constant likes his foie gras--Carpaccio of Marinated Duck Foie Gras is one of six recipes devoted to that extraordinary (and costly) specialty--he also dotes on homier fare, such as Endive Gratin with Ham and Roasted Baby Scallops with Chive Butter. Similarly, a chapter on one-dish meals presents Grandma's Red-Wine Daub of Beef and French Shepherd's Pie. Sweets, including Lemon Meringue Tart and the astounding Rich Layered Chocolate Tart (chocolate pastry with chocolate sponge, filling, and icing), peak deliciously for themselves. --Arthur Boehm ...
